Welcome to the SDRP's new Workshop Series RP. This RP takes place on the SDRP Academy Campus with the guild's more active, advanced members as the faculty running classes which are the workshops. Around them is a frame RP in which students can interact with each other and faculty on the campus of said academy.

All students will start in a character creation workshop (PSY 101) where they will create their characters for the RP and then may choose to go to another class or hang out on campus.

Note: See the Planning Thread for discussion. We're still looking for a good name for the Academy, preferably something with either RPU or SDRP as the initials.

In Character Intro:

Two months after receiving a mysterious acceptance letter to a university you had never heard of you found yourself, for whatever reason, traveling a good distance to attend its new student orientation. When you arrived at the address on the invitation though it was not at all what you had expected. There was just a small, weathered building in the middle of nowhere, hardly large enough to keep a shop in let alone a university. But the crest on the faded sign swinging above the door matched the one on the acceptance letter and this was the right address. Besides, you had come all this way, may as well check it out.

Opening the door revealed something that could only be called magic (or a teleportation device). Inside the building was outside - and not the same outside you had just come from. This outside was picture perfect with a bright blue sky dotted in puffy clouds that looked painted on, only their movement making them real. The wall in which the door stood was a sturdy brick facade with a tall, white columned porch in colonial style. Beyond it was a grassy lawn bordered in other buildings of similar make. Cobbled pathways wound between them lined in lush landscaping heavy with fragrant flowers.

This was more like it. But you weren't given much time to appreciate the view as only moments after stepping through the door a blue haired old woman came shambling up to shoo you off the porch and into one of the neighboring buildings where she prattled on about the campus being a window to other worlds you had just begun to dream of. She didn't seem to listen to anything you may have attempted to say to her as she lead you through winding halls going on about the diverse student body.

Then the old woman opened a door to a small classroom containing a few other supposed students sitting in desks and looking as new as you were. The classroom itself was modest with simple white walls, floor, and ceiling tiles. Windows lined the back overlooking the green space from where you had just come and a large blackboard made up the right side wall. On the blackboard was written in a tight and somewhat awkward hand a simple message, "Welcome to PSY 101, otherwise known as New Student Orientation. Find a seat and draft up a quick introduction of yourself to share with the class."

Note: This introduction is left vague to allow for creativity in the characters attending the university. Have fun and don't be afraid to try something different.

RULES

Top | Rules | Commitment | Application | Catalog | Map | Events | Directory | Transcripts

These are the basic codes of conduct within the Academy. There are not many and they are very simple. Breaking these will have consequences.

1. Common Sense
Don't be an idiot. Respect each other, respect the TOS, and respect guild rules. Don't mess it up for the rest of us, and try not to do anything that would upset other people. This is a GAME after all, we're here to have fun.

2. Control
Don't control anyone else's character(s). Don't severely affect (maim, kill, etc) them without permission (of the player or with GM override). Don't go off on an insane killing spree (without permission). Don't mess up the plot/world. Basically use some measure of self control or pay the consequences (character death/player ban). If you need help with the control etiquette please enroll in KIN 101 or POL 101.

3. Literacy
This is a school and as such we encourage you to write well. For this RP that means in third person, past tense, complete sentences. L33t speak, txt abbreviations, profuse slang, and generally bad grammar should not be used outside of dialog. We won't be grammar Nazis but do try to write above an 8th grade level. If you have issues with grammar please enroll in LIT 101 for help.

Please do not color and/or bold dialog. It puts too much emphasis on dialog which, while important, should not be put above the rest of the text. Also do not center align long blocks of text, use small fonts, or use bright font colors. In general please keep formatting to a minimum.

4. Depth
We'd like our characters to be as real as possible. Because of this all players must take PSY 101 as their first class to create/flesh out their character.

5. Commitment
We want dedicated players or at least to know how dedicated all our players are so we can pair them with other players of the same level. You will be asked for a commitment level on your application, take that seriously and give us the time you sign up for. See Commitment for more info on what we expect.

6. Dependability
If you will be unable to keep your commitment please let anyone you have a scene with know ahead of time so they can get out of the scene if they would like to do something while you're gone. There is no formal punishment for failing to meet your commitment but frequent, repeated lapses in commitment will result in the lowering of your posted commitment level and your character going 'in the bag' (either played by the GM as an NPC or knocked unconscious/otherwise incapacitated).

COMMITMENT

Top | Rules | Commitment | Application | Catalog | Map | Events | Directory | Transcripts

Everyone has played games that started strong and just fell apart after a short time due to lack of/mismatched commitments (some players flood the boards but others only post once or twice a week). We want players willing to give us their time and effort to make this RP thrive but we also understand that not everyone is as addicted to RP as our GM.

In hopes of solving that we have developed a system of Commitment Levels. The Commitment Levels let other players know roughly how often they can expect you to post so characters of equal posting frequency can group and participate at their own pace without hindering, or rushing other players. We hope that by matching equal levels of participation everyone can play as much, or as little, as they want.

For this system to work we need a scale by which to measure levels of commitment. We've developed the following scale. Don't be intimidated by it. Choose a lower level to start with and if you end up posting more you can always change it (better to go up than down).

Note: Occasional lapses in commitment are understood but please give warning if you expect an extended absence. There is no formal punishment for failing to meet your commitment but frequent, repeated lapses in commitment will result in the lowering of your posted commitment level and your character going 'in the bag' (either played by the GM as an NPC or knocked unconscious/otherwise incapacitated).

1. Hobbyist - This commitment comes with a few expectations but they are loose. You are expected to submit a character and make at least occasional (once a week-ish) posts to the RP. You have a limit of 1 active character. This commitment is good for those that aren't sure how much of a commitment they can really make.

2. Gamer - We hope most our players can make this commitment. You are expected to submit a character and check/post every day-ish (5 days a week or more). You can have 2 active characters so you can take classes and hang out or take 2 classes at the same time. This is a good commitment if you can check/post to the RP daily.

3. Staff - Because every group needs leaders and that requires a higher level of commitment this is what we expect of our Staff (and faculty). You are expected to submit a character and lesson plans, check/post to the board at least once a day, keep up with discussions, teach classes, and tutor students. You may have 3 active PCs, 1 of which will be yourself as a teacher or staff member. Staff must be approved by the GM and existing Staff. To become Staff PM a request with lesson plans to the GM (Umbraja).

4. GM - A throwback to old school RPG, the GM (Game Master) is the highest commitment one can make to an RP. The GM will check/post to the RP multiple times a day, read every post made to the RP (and associated threads), and be intimately familiar with all characters. The GM leads discussions and is ultimately responsible for producing, introducing, and driving plot lines as well as generating the world in which the RP takes place. The GM will post to the reference sections, write summaries, and make announcements. The GM's character is the world so there is no limit to the amount or kind of character the GM may have but they are mostly NPC's. The GM has final say in RP decisions.

APPLICATIONS

Top | Rules | Commitment | Application | Catalog | Map | Events | Directory | Transcripts

Enrolling in the SDRP Academy is fast and easy. Just PM the Registrar (Umbraja) with your completed application. The Registrar will place you in the next available New Student Orientation (PSY 101). You will get a PM reply to notify you of this placement and any further instructions necessary. Once you have completed the orientation you may move on to the next available desired course or simply hang out with other students around campus.

Application Deadline
Since the Academy is more like a real school than an RP and, like a real school, we hope to have several generations of students come through there is no hard deadline for applications. We will always be taking submissions so if you miss the first round you can always catch the next.

We've decided to open the current class of the Academy up for late arrivals. Submit your application and we will tell you when you can have your character wander in late. If you don't want to come in late you, the next class will start recruiting after this one finishes.

STUDENT ENROLLMENT

Fill out the following form and PM it to the Registrar (Umbraja) with the subject: SDRP Academy Enrollment.

[Name your character goes by]

Played by: [your Gaia name]
Commitment: [see Commitment]
RP Experience: [brief summary of your experience with RPing]
Desired Classes: [see Catalog]

Concept
One sentence that sums up the concept of your character: who they are, what they do.

See the Directory for examples of what we are looking for in character concepts.

FACULTY / STAFF SEARCH

Right now the Academy is looking more for students than teachers but is always taking faculty/staff applications and ideas for new classes. If you have a new class idea (or any other suggestion) reply to the Planning Thread and let us know about it.

Prospective faculty and staff should submit a curriculum vitae outlining your experience with RP and teaching or a related field to the Registrar (Umbraja). The vitae should be true but does not need to include location details. The vitae should include relevant education and employment information.

Additionally, prospective faculty must submit proposed lesson plans to the Registrar (Umbraja). Lesson plans should be complete and include: lesson opening, topics covered, student expectations, methods, assignments, and lesson closing, as well as any other information necessary.

Candidates will be selected based on vitae and lesson plan quality and may be required to take EDU 101 before teaching.

Faculty

The SDRP Academy faculty have a great diversity in areas of expertise covering the full breadth of RP and writing in general. In addition to teaching a variety of courses here, some members of the faculty are certified teachers or working in the writing or education fields. All of our faculty are highly qualified, experienced RPers and skilled writers.

Ivaylo_Sai
Mr. Vay has been playing various forms of RP since 1998, starting with tabletop AD&D and moving into other systems (Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, White Wolf) then chatroom, IM, and forum styles. He will play almost any genre and specializes in herding cats, keeping things moving, and reinventing cliche characters. Mr. Vay has 12 years of private lesson and 7 years classroom teaching experience. He has taught students ranging from 5th grade to collage age (sometimes all in one day). For the Academy Mr. Vay will be teaching PSY 101 and providing personalized tutoring by appointment.

Native has been RPing for about six years, GMing for five, and runs the subforum RP Odyssey into Madness. He is studying behavioral neurosciences at university and has taught a few units to high school classes on related subjects. Native is also a second degree black belt in Taekwondo with some experience in general MMA, and Arnis. He has competed nationally, winning first in his division for both sparring and weapons on several occasions. Native is a certified martial arts instructor and his training includes knife and gun defense, knife fighting, judo, and multiple forms of weapon combat. He will be teaching KIN 201 as well as PSY 301.

Umbraja
Ms. Umbraja started playing RP in 1995, graduated to GMing in 1998, has played too many systems to list, co-owned a game shop where she runs the table top gaming (sold my share but still go in to play), and is a certified secondary educator (high school teacher) in English and History with a minor in secondary education. She specializes in world creation, character depth, epic plots, organization, and marketing. She will be teaching the marketing and education classes among others as well as serving as Registrar in charge of student and teacher enrollment.

Venom3001
Venom (Time Zone: U.S. Pacific) has about eight years of RP experience having played many games and systems, with recent endeavors including: D&D 4e, as a player; Shadowrun, as a GM; FATE, as a GM; SDRP's Resurrection of the Cabal, as a GM (not terribly recent); SDRP's subforum RP 27, sequel to Resurrection of the Cabal, as a GM (27 is on hiatus); SOUL, ongoing and just started, as a GM; and about two dozen SDRP games over the years, most of which died before reaching any sort of satisfying conclusion, as a player. Venom is a third-year undergraduate Philosophy major and works as a copy editor for a newspaper. He will be teaching LIT 101, KIN 101, and a few upper level courses. Additionally, Venom uses GraphicsGale to create pixel art.

Students sat in their seats and some did as the blackboard instructed while others clearly did not. But that was the way of any group of people, really. One in particular did not, choosing instead to nap with a book laid over his face and feet propped on the desk in front of him. The clock on the wall over his head at the back of the room ticked the time away, well past when the invitations had said the class would start. The students were beginning to get restless, some more than others. It wasn't until one of them voiced a complaint that the sleeping student in the back woke with a start, the book dropping from his face to his lap as he blinked at the people gathered in the desks around him. He blinked a few more times then checked his watch, frowned at it and gave the glass a tap then looked at the clock on the wall behind him and jumped up with a muttered curse.

“Sorry, guys,” he told the class as he straightened up, flattening his shirt on the way to the front. “Lost track of time there,” he laughed a bit weakly and dropped the book on the teacher's desk then stepped past it, up to the blackboard. There he picked up a stick of chalk then found a clean space and scrawled in the same tight, awkward hand as the rest of what was on the board, “Mr. Vay.” The he turned to give the students a friendly smile.

“I'm Mr. Vay,” he waved a hand back at the board. “And I got saddled wi- I mean, the privilege of being the first to teach here at the Academy. This is going to be a sort of special class to get you all indoctrinated into the way we do things and the like. First though, let's get to know each other.” He stepped away from the board as he talked and sat down against the edge of the teacher's desk, putting his hands into the pockets of his faded jeans. He didn't look like a teacher but he was acting like one, for the most part.

“How 'bout one of you start us off? Tell the class who you are, how you got here, why you came, all that fun stuff,” he looked out over the class with a smile as he waited for one of them answer.

"Well seeing as no one has the guts, I guess I might as well go!" Fang exclaimed triumphantly as he jumped over the desk to get to the front of the class. "Greetings, weird people without animal attachments! I'm Fang. I got here by... Falling through the sky I believe. I was just recently banished for some minor offense, fell off a bridge and landed here." He chuckled as he tried to come up with a good explanation for 'why.' "As for why... Well, I've got no other place to go really. Besides, I figured this would a good place to explore!"

"Hmmm. . ." the teacher arched an eyebrow curiously at the. . . thing that had jumped up so enthusiastically. "Ok, well, that's a little blue, there Fang. Also a somewhat unorthodox entry to campus but that's fine," he waved off the concerns. "How about you tell me a little more then? Let's try bit of description for yourself, put that in text; you don't have to speak it. And how 'bout an introduction to that person up there," he pointed up with a lazy gesture, "that pulls your strings. Tell me about your player."

Then he looked to the rest of the class, "All of you now. Let's try to keep this moving. I want an introduction to you and your player." He paused briefly, "And let's try to avoid using colors for now. They give me a headache."

Alex cocked his head at the first guy to jump up. Who was this weirdo? He shrugged and got up from his seat. He walked to the front of the room, slouching the entire way, hands in his front shirt pocket. His grey sweatshirt didn't have sleeves so it looked more like a shirt with a pocket and a hood. His unkept black hair looked strangely decent despite the way Alex took care of it(which was no effort at all). His jeans were raggedy at the bottoms as they covered up his ankles and part of his shoes. They looked like they hadn't been washed since he got them. He held up a hand in greeting to the students in front of him, speaking in a bored manner."My name is Alex Rider. I got here because my parents bugged me enough to leave the house. I hope to learn something here that I can use for my future. This seems like an ok place, but definitely not what I expected.
My player's name is DragnGuy7 though he prefers Dragn. He's been into the rp scene for a good 3 years now and is now part of two large guilds as crew or higher. He enjoys anything with fantasy elements though he enjoys technology and many series related rps as well. He's currently a college student, hoping to major in technology. I hope to be friends with all of you."
He finished by giving a solemn nod and returned to his seat.
