The Unknown Gemstone
Word Count: 468

In the palm of his hand he held some sort of stone. It was something he had never seen before, but somehow it felt special. Why that other man had such a thing in his coat pocket was quite a curious question, though as Howl recalled, that man had other things to worry about. Perhaps the stranger had made his way to the hospital to take care of those wounds that he received from that woman.

General Painite. Though she seemed almost childish in a sense, the fact she could injure an innocent man so readily was quite vile. It was part of the reason why he was curious about the task she had given him.

Why would she want me to give this stone to a senshi? It definitely was a very unique sort of stone. It looked as if it was cut by a jeweler, but the coloration definitely did not seem to match any stones he was familiar with. Though, it would be a bit vain to think he knew of every gemstone that existed in the world. He was much more familiar with flowers, not gemstones. Even a casual internet search had not yielded any satisfactory results.

Rather than risk leaving the stone in his dorm room at Hillworth, he kept it on her person nearly all of the time. Leaving such valuable things in his room would only encourage his room to become the target for some sort of vandalism.

The teal haired boy could have gone to the Hillworth school library, but that seemed quite useless. There wasn't much of a variety when it came to the books due to the lack of funds. For a better variety of books, Howl went to the city library. There were several decent books on gemstones, or at least he decided such after a quick glance through each book. He could have spent more time in the library to research, however it would have been rushed due to the Hillworth curfew. No, it would be wiser to borrow the books so he could research at his own leisure during the week. After a brief conversation with the librarian about his sudden interest in gemstones, he left to go back to the Hillworth facility.

Unknown to him, the presence of that gemstone seemed to be earning him a bit of extra attention. From the alleyway, four eyes looked at him in a nearly hungry manner. The unseen danger could sense there was something different about this human. Why would he have two delicious treats on his person? Licking its chops, the unseen creature decided that it would keep an eye on this human.

Howl would eventually learn the dangers of carrying such a gemstone around with him. However, that would be another story for another time.

The Gift of a Family Relic
Word Count: 647

In Howl's young age, he had realized that he was indeed quite an old-fashioned young man. It was not to say that he was an old man living in the body of a young man, but rather his core values seemed a bit more mature than those of his peers. It probably had everything to do with the values his parents enforced as he grew from a child into the young adult he was now.

Despite the mistakes that had been made, the Wickhams had managed to form a new tradition for the holidays. Mother and Father came to their condo in Destiny City. Since it was not their home, there was a lack of hired help to decorate it appropriately for the holidays. The most the Wickhams had procured was a Christmas tree. It was just enough for them to feel as if it was the appropriate holiday.

Since his parents were able to call him out of the school during the holiday, Howl had been able to stay at the condo. He did still maintain his usual schedule when it came to waking up in the morning, but save for his wake-up time, it was quite a lovely break from the Hillworth regiment. He was able to eat something more nutritious than a piece of cardboard, he was able to be in the company of rather civilized individuals (namely his mother), and he did not need to do any chores. All in all, he was thoroughly enjoying the holiday.

On Christmas morning, he enjoyed his parents' company as they ate breakfast, then proceeded on to the presents lined up under their tree. Some families went overboard with the piles of presents under the tree, but his parents were affluent and frequently purchased what they wanted when they wanted. As a result, the line up consisted mostly of envelopes and one small sized package.

Various checks and gift cards assumed most of the pile. Father had lined up a romantic vacation with Mother set up for the spring. And the mysterious package was the last thing left. It was labeled as a present to Howl, from Father. With considerate amounts of care, the lad unwrapped the package without tearing the paper. Perhaps it was meticulous, but the lad preferred this to pointless tearing of paper. Once there was no paper covering the package, he carefully opened the gift box.

Inside was an elegant golden pocket watch. It was definitely something too lovely to be found in the Hillworth facility. However, the odd thing about it was that along the casing, there was a familiar symbol carved upon it.

...the Neptune symbol?

The symbol was not strictly by itself, mixed with several other more delicate markings engraved along the casing. Minding his manners, the lad spoke carefully to his father. "It is quite lovely, Father. I thank you for such a thoughtful gift. It looks rather old. Might I ask where you got this watch?"

From his seat upon a nearby armchair, the other teal haired man in the room nodded in approval to his son's words. "It is not meant for everyday use, Howl. I am always surprised by your attention to detail with jewelry. That is a family heirloom. It was given to me by my father when I turned 18, and he received it from his father at the same age."

The lad carefully held the pocket watch by the chain, looking it over curiously. "That is quite intriguing, Father..." His father's response had only managed to stir up several questions in the back of his mind. However, fighting off his baser instincts to ask more questions, Howl bit his tongue. Today was a day for celebrating and spending time as a family. Even if his questions went unanswered for now, he had to keep his priorities straight.

There would always be another time.

The Line of Duty
Word Count: 1,139

It was not everyday that Father was in town. He usually was in England due to one business meeting or another. It was the disadvantage of being an important man in a company. It meant more responsibilities and less free time. Father might not have ever noticed, but his wife and his son had both noticed. However, Mother and Son were quite understanding.

Unfortunately, due to the school that he was boarded at, Howl was not free to leave as he wished. There were procedures which needed to be followed. And thanks to Father, they had been. The man went to the office and signed the lad out for the day. The office manager looked at the man oddly, since she was much more accustomed to the lovely brunette coming in and whisking the young Wickham away. It was also quite odd to see a full grown man who had the same hair color as the younger Wickham. The office manager always assumed that Howl Wickham had dyed his locks to be that odd turquoise color.

Apparently it was natural.

Howl came to the office, as summoned, but unlike when his mother came to visit, he seemed far more uptight. He could escort his mother politely, but his father, he had to merely walk beside almost like a soldier. The simple greeting of "Father," was all the lad needed to utter before it was returned with an equally formal "Son."

Since Father spent so much time in England, it made plenty of sense that he would not be driving today. Awaiting them outside was a black taxi.

"...Father, would you mind terribly if we stopped back at the condominium before we go to lunch? I would like to change out of my uniform if at all possible."

The man with matching hair turned to face the effeminate boy. "That sounds like a logical suggestion. I do not need you shaming me any by wearing such a tell-tale uniform in such a formal eatery." His words were harsh, but the tone had been well expected. Howl knew that his own past actions had put a divide between the two of them.

After the cab driver had been given the directions, the lad attempted to make conversation. "I do appreciate you inviting me to this meeting. It is nice to get out of the Hillworth Institute every so often."

Father kept his eyes straight forward, as if he was trying to watch the road for the cab driver as he drove. "I am not doing this for your benefit. My associates requested to meet my son. They want to meet who might potentially be running the company at some point."

There was a tense silence that followed such a blunt statement. The cab driver cleared his throat, as if trying to ease the tension, but there was no way he'd be able to manage. Both Howl and Nigel knew that Howl had no intention of running the company. Howl's dream was something simplistic, romantic, and in all honesty, quite impractical. He planned to throw away a surefire way to keep himself well off by inheriting a company to merely serve others. It was a difficult subject, and though the elder of the pair was more vocal about his disappointment, it seemed at the moment that not saying anything was in both of their best interests.

Once they were at the condo, the pair entered, Howl heading to his own room to find a more suitable outfit than the dreaded Hillworth uniform. When he came back out, he was wearing a gray casual suit with a brown sweater-vest underneath. Yet, as he returned to the living room, he held something in his hand.

"...Father, before we go... there has been something on my mind since you gave this to me this past Christmas." As he approached, he held out the pocket watch with the Neptune symbol. The amount of care he took in even holding such an old object was evident as he took a seat upon a nearby chair.

Nigel looked to his son from behind the pair of glasses resting over the bridge of his nose. "You will need to make this quite brief. We have a schedule to keep."

The lad nodded his head carefully, eyes locked upon his father's. "I will make this brief. When this watch was your possession... did you ever feel any sort of sense of... duty? Like, you were destined to do something far greater than anything you had ever done in your lifetime?"

Despite his previous attitude towards this whole momentary talk, the man seemed to look as if he had just been hit with a sack of bricks. It was a question that seemed to almost hit home for the elder man. "...I suppose we can take a moment to speak of such things..." he said, clearly trying to find his own answer somewhere in the back of his mind.

With an understanding nod and a smile, Howl replied "I appreciate any insights you can give me."

Nigel for a moment clasped his own hands together, his green eyes looking to the locked fingers as he seemed to piece together what he planned to vocalize. It was quiet, but not nearly as tense as before. "At one point, you could say I felt that the watch you hold was quite important. It was definitely strong, stronger than any sort of man-made item should ever hold upon a person. It definitely was not a feeling towards the object though, which I suppose sounds odd. It felt though, as if I was needed for something."

The man unfolded his fingers and looked to the boy who was looking at him as attentive as ever. "However, the feeling began to fade, as if I was not needed. Soon enough I had other things to keep me occupied. A company was not going to run itself, and a family was not going to start itself." There was what seemed like half a smile that was forming on the man's face. "I honestly had forgotten that feeling altogether until you spoke of it just now. I imagine it was all just a flight of fancy."

Howl simply took in his father's words. This man was not the sort to open up. He was not the sort to show any vulnerability. Yet despite all of the formalities, he had gotten a glimpse of the man that had once been before he had been forced to change. Once more, the son repeated "I appreciate your insights." With a nod, he stood himself up. "I will put this away, and then we should get going."

Perhaps it wasn't the answer to all of his questions, but for one day, it was more than satisfactory to see what could have been.
