I am only happy that I grew up in America, where I could learn and have fun freely. Not to mention, have textbooks that are not changed and altered to fit the picture that the government wants to be seen.

Oh, our American textbooks go through a system to make sure they're "decent". Basicly meaning our books are not allowed to say anything negitive about important American historical figures or else they get edited or banned.
*Cough* Sorry, I had to open my big mouth and comment about that >__>;

One thing I've noticed is a lot of sterotypes about Japan are like the various sterotypes of America.
You have the South in America, if you ain't of the right race you get snubbed.
In California and New York people picture a whole group of crazy people running arround in outrageous fashion and using the newest electronics.
So on and so forth, and there's some truth to these.

And I swear I had a real point, I promise.
But I'll edit in what I forgot later >____>

For public school text books that might be true, but textbooks made for hoemschoolers can say anything. razz

That's not rue about the South. We're really polite and accept anyone.
And honestly, when I think of California, I think of crazy drivers and expensive stuff. xd

One thing I want to know about is food. I've always wanted to cook any kind of Asian style food, but I like Japanese food best, especially udon and sushi.
I've lived in both the south and California. The only thing is that I found out every stereotype I heard about California was true. On the other hand, I hadn't heard many anyway. When you get right down to it, Japan is just like any other place in the world; holding strong to some traditions and changing other things as the world spins.

I hate to say this but I really wana go to Japan and maybe even live there but I would stand out way too much. You see I'm black but I'm pretty light (like a hispanic persons skin). I think I would have a tough time if I went and was the outcast because I'm not part of anyones click. But the fact that I have darker skin would make it harder for me. No? Any words of comfort? sweatdrop

it really doesnt matter of the color. of course they'll stare cuz you're not japanese. stare back. LOL. you have to strive to get you your goal! exclaim がんばってね! I felt jealous because my friend went to japan last month and had fun. I want to go back, though.... crying

I just got back from a 6 week homestay in Japan, so I guess I can add my experience. Not all Japanese people are uber short and skinny like you probably think they are. I've seen people over 6 feet tall, and people probably over 300 lbs (and no, they weren't sumo wrestlers). Generally, people are skinnier than Americans, due to the healthiness of the foods, but of course not everyone is the same.

I went most places with my host mother, who would explain my situation to friends and store employees and things like that, but from what I saw, people will be really friendly towards foreigners, regardless of skin color. Occasionally I would ride around town and go to different stores on my bike, and buy things, and it was fairly simple. I've had 2 years of Japanese language study in highschool, so I could get by fairly easily if I had to, but I think it's possible to survive in a city, even if it's not big, but a really small town community may be harder. I lived in a city of 40,000 people, and it was considered a country town. sweatdrop But in my experience, it's a great place, with a lot of friendly people who will usually go out of their way to help you. Oh, and a VERY important thing to remember: If you go to someone's house, bring a gift (usually food of some sort) because gift giving is huge in Japan.

And I also got to be in a Japanese highschool for about 3 weeks. I didn't understand the classes at all for the most part, except math. PE consisted of swimming laps nonstop for an hour, since it's summer. If you go to school in summer, have a swimming cap and goggles. For the most part, people were nice and helpful to me. The kids will probably ask you if you have a significant other, and if you do, showing them a picture is like handing them bars of gold. I showed one person my gf, and they all swarmed within seconds. whee And of course there will probably be the perverted people that say things like "Do you like breasts?" and things like that, but just try to ignore them.

Hope I helped at least a little.

hahahahaha! the pictures are true! xd

I agree with hikari megumi =3
Though I'm a bit nervous myself about the same problem, It's bound to happen.
I don't like standing out and me being black kinda made me anxious about going but I'm planning on making the best of it! Cause I really wanna go =D

Eheheheh I'm going in the summer for a few weeks^^ Homestay and language classes. If you want a program for the summer and maybe not a semester or school year, try http://langubridge.com/tksummer.htm The prices are cheaper than both Intrax and AFS...

My aunt is dark and she's been livin in japan for almost 2 years. She loves it, but then again she's a grown person. But hold on, you wouldnt be able to cope being out of everyone's click (and idk bout that spelling but who cares)? ******** that be yourself. Words of comfort: hug, kisses, hot cocoa. My words to you: go over there and only worry about if you're having fun. Friends are nice, but dont bother to join a group unless they're all about what you're al about, then it'll be natural. Learned this the hard way a few years back in my freshman hs year.

Da ********? There are enough sources on the internet to where if you have talent and a good scanner, you can learn how to draw manga. Writing manga is like writing a damn fiction story. Your approach to your goal doesnt make any sense. You can even live in the US and learn how to do that on your spare time. If you're gonna go to college, go to be an english major, and minor in art or something. Major in something that deals with writing, a lot. That way if this plan fails (which it probably will unless you find your niche of fans), you have a pretty prestigious degree. Never give up, but always be real.

This one is for all the teachers in training roaming around the guild. Though it's not the complete picture I think it a good visual reference on what your life in the land of the rising sun will be like.

I plan on taking a trip to Japan next June for 8 weeks to help further improve my Japanese so I can become fluent in it, but my real goal though is to take classes there for a year. If I were to live in Japan for one year, what would be the cost of food, living, etc.

I should also note that I've seen some of the prices for colleges there for one year. I've seen around $19000 which is pretty pricey. I'm curious if there's so I don't have to pay as much. As in scholarships and such.

If you don't plan on fancy livin' I would say the best barometer would be to take how you live how and compare that with the cost of things you do here in the states. If you want to lighten the load I would suggest a couple things: Get a good roommate to share the living quarters/rent/food/etc. and try to find a place that isn't near the big cities. As it is in the states the closer a place is to a busy part of the country the more they'll wanna charge you for it

Thats great to hear Hardgay
Hopefully the US dollar and JPY will equal itself out a bit more by then.
When I came to japan i got 120 yen to the dollar.
At the moment I believe it is almost half that.
(Please forgive me if my math is a little off, I am working in GBP)

If you want to try and stay there for a year and keep a strict budget at the same time, you might want to look into some of these schools that offer accomadation and lessons for an all in one price, you might be able to save a bit. You would make loads of friends but watch out for the danger of only hanging out with english speakers if you do!
