The child named Ainsley McMahon was up and about in a rare scene around the camp. Speaking of rarities around the camp, the child was looking under beds and behind furniture with gusto before any of the other children had seemed to wake up. She couldn't sleep, and instead it seemed she cleaning? She didn't have a broom in her hands, or even a duster. In fact, even though she seemed to spend so much time looking under the furniture with her hands under them as if she were trying to reach the dirt at the far back: there was still dust under the furniture even after her inspection had finished and she had moved on.
Whatever had the child in such a state of panic wasn't the fact the room was dirty under all of the furniture due to lack of cleaning on the camp's part but the fact she could still not find Cora anywhere in the cabin. She hadn't come home to the cabin even after the leeway the child had given, at least as far as camp was concerned, and the child didn't know what to do. She was really worried now, having not seen Cora for days. She had five cabinmates but she couldn't exactly walk up to any of them ask them if they had seen her magical talking cat anywhere! She couldn't even go ask Sam about it and he was her fountain of knowledge about all things camp related. What about camp related missing magical talking cats? She frowned and sat on the bed as the morning wake up call finally arrived. Another day at camp, nothing new but the fact Cora was not there.
Wait.
No.
There was an announcement with the wake up call. A talent show tomorrow? A momentary distraction came into place as her thoughts moved from thoughts of Cora to thoughts of the talent show. It sounded fun but the child had to do other things! All the camp activities barely gave her enough time to find Cora as it was, and she had to carefully plan her day to make the best use of her time! She'd done the cabin inspection, and the next thing on her list was to get some food from the Mess Hall and eat it as quickly as possible so she could use the remaining breakfast hour to look for Cora outside the bushes.
Breakfast went by quickly, just as the child had planned. The only time in the Mess Hall she had spent was the time it took for her to wait in line for the food. She had grabbed the most idle of all the breakfast foods and had taken it with her as she began to search outside. She had searched many bushes, peeking in and behind and all around as she called to Cora while trying to eat at the same time. During which, a number of adults seemed to stop and stare, questioning the child as she tried talking to the bushes all around the Mess Hall area. she'd answered them, and told them that she was looking for her friend. 'In a bush?' seemed to be the general answer that the adults replied with before they walked away leaving the child in her search.
The hour seemed to pass by so quickly and the child still hadn't found Cora. Where could she have gone? The child hadn't paid much attention during the activities, constantly drifting away from the group as she tried to look for Cora in the various places the activities were taking place. More than once the child had to be reprimanded about her behaviour, having even tried to look under one of the adult's dress when she thought she seen something wiggling under it. It hadn't been Cora, it had just been the tip of a cattail plant that the adult had been stepping on. How was she supposed to know?
It was lunch time and the child finally had a good amount of time to look for Cora. Of course, after all the work she'd put into finding her cat in the morning and the fact she'd eaten very little for breakfast had the child starving and forced to actually go back to the Mess Hall. She'd pouted, and once again picked the quickest thing she find as she ran back out of the Mess Hall with it, only stopping for a moment to listen to a group of older kids talking about their ideas for the talent show. She'd forgotten about it, and for a moment she'd once again found her mind wandering to thoughts of it. Wouldn't it be fun to do something? They all sounded like they were having fun. Her thoughts lost, the child ended up leaning too close to the side of the Mess Hall wall and fell to the side, nearly dropping her food. It snapped her out of it, and in a rush she hurried off to make use of the two hour free time that involved lunch.
The two hours of lunch as well as the two hours of activities and two hours of free time had nearly come and gone, but she still hadn't been able to find Cora. This wasn't anything like Hide-and-Seek at home! She'd been looking all day, to the point of exhaustion, and still hadn't found her cream coloured guardian. She was sad, and tired, and with the rest of her energy the child wandered back to the Mess Hall for the final time. She didn't care what they gave her this time, and after eating it very slowly, the child dragged herself back to Azalea Cabin, looked under her bed one last time and then crawled under the covers, burying her face into the pillow to cover her sobs.
To this she fell into the sweet arms of Hypnos, brought into the realm of her own dreams.
