My family thought at first that my interest in languages was a phase, and saw my attempts to study things like Armenian and Arabic to be in vain.
When I moved on to the languages I think to be my true studies (Russian, German and Japanese), they became more open to it. My uncle, however, sees Russian from the typical "Better dead than Red" perspective, based only on the fact that his enemies in the Cold War were Soviets; he doesn't even consider the fact that my great-uncle speaks fluent Russian from being in the Air Force during the Cold War and had actually been over there as a translator. Today, he absolutely loves Russian and Russian culture.

So far I've only gotten a couple of envy teasing because I speak Spanish, am fluent in English and French, and know a little bit of German and Danish, whereas my best friends can barely speak one or two words of English. And also because my English is near perfect while theirs has a horrible Mexican accent that will get them in trouble if they go to the States. confused

snubsnub One person in my family does, but the others are fine with it. He absolutely hates the fact that I'm learning Japanese because of what they did to us in World War II, etc. He hates asians in general sweatdrop He says things such as 'Get that crap off my computer' if I'm reading something Japanese, and just things like that. P.S. I'm not learning the language to get him mad.
Are you experiancing things like this or something similar? ;.; I understand where you're coming from because my grandma hates the Japanese, her brother was a pilot in world war II who was shot down by the Japanese. But I'm not learning Japanese and haven't talked to her in years because she's just generally unpleasent (she refused to come to my father's funeral). Just ignore it. If anything, you can use it to make yourself more determined to learn the language. You can make it your goal to be able to speak with the Japanese and use your experience to argue that they are not evil.

Untill last week no one has ever gotten too angry at me. My mom is usually annoyed that I want to learn more than one language at once, but she isn''t mad.
Last week my youth group was going to an amusement park and I took some arabic books along for the long car ride. Then one girl says to the person next to her, "Why did you bring a terrorist to a youth group event." So apparently she thought I was a terrorist because I eat falafil, speak some arabic, and happened to have camouflage pants on that day. xp But at least she was half joking, later that evening another kid was mad, "Why do you care about learning another language? You live in America. You should care about your own language and learn about your own culture, not someone elses." I never thought I'd come across someone mad at me for learning a language in general, not just mad about what one I was learning.

My dad gets really mad sometimes when I say things in Spanish or French. I think it's just when he's irritable, can't understand what I'm saying, and decides to assume that I'm cursing him to high heaven sometimes. He doesn't like the French, but he doesn't really mind me learning it as long as I'm learning Spanish at the same time.
Also, one of my "acquaintances" at school gets mad when I speak French. I think again that it's because she can't understand it. She's taking Spanish and doesn't really mind me speaking that.
I almost wish people envy bugged me. xD They just all think I'm dumb for finding languages so fascinating. Except for two of my friends, but they're language nerds themselves. ^^
Oh yeah, and I have something to add to frozennight's story, which I found very amusing, by the way. xD America doesn't HAVE an official language. It makes me so mad when a customer speaks Spanish in a store with family or something and someone says to speak English because you're in America. You know, technically you speak English in England and if you're a true American you'd probably be speaking a Native American language. People in America came from everywhere, anyway. That's why we don't have an official language in the first place.

I was in french class the other day and I wanted to say something. I can't remember what now. But a word popped into my head and I couldn't remember if that word was french or spanish or romanian. All of the words in my head are divided into english and notenglish. I lightheartedly complained about this to my mom and she said, "That's why you shouldn't learn so many languages!" I was like gah! But I like doing so! That I mix the words up is a minor annoyance compared to the fun of learning them all. My mom speaks like 5 languages but she's only fluent in 2 and she doesn't ever use the others any more.
