*Newton's Third Law 2
Arlyn gripped Donat's horn firmly and shook it a little, moving the other boy's head with it. "I owe you questions, though. For the ones you were asking me. Personal things, you know."
"If you say so," Donat replied with a slight laugh. "How many?"
The red-skinned boy considered a moment, then replied, "Five, now, I guess."
Then he asked his first: "You say a lot that you do things because we're brothers. Why? We're both adopted."
Why would Arlyn even need to ask that? "We still are in the same house with the same daddy, so why shouldn't we be brothers? And Daddy cares about us both a lot, so we are really a family, I'd say."
Speaking of their father, Donat realized he probably should not spend too much time away from home, with Arlyn or not. "Hey, let's get up and keep walking, and head on home now. I'm getting a little hungry anyway, and I know Daddy might start to worry about us." Since Donat had run away from home a few nights before, of course....
The Anima of Revenge nodded, and carefully slid down off of the rock. Once his brother had taken his hand again, they started to walk back towards the house.
"Why do you only have four fingers?" Arlyn inquired after a moment.
Donat looked down at his free hand, wiggling all four of his fingers. "I have just as many as you have," he insisted. "I just don't have a thumb. Because I'm a Baleric Islands cave goat, and they don't have thumbs. I saw the bones of one in the museum when Daddy and Serif and I went. Only four toes on each foot, just like me."
"Does it make it hard to do things?" the red-skinned boy asked a bit more quietly. Was this something that would upset Donat?
The goat appeared largely unruffled. "No. I would have to learn with a thumb anyway. I just have to learn different. Besides, I can still do everything I need to do, just like you, right?"
Right then, they came across another branch across the path that would be difficult to get around. Donat told Arlyn to wait a moment, then climbed over the branch before taking his brother's hand again.
Arlyn felt the log over with both hands, gaguing how high off the ground it was. "Just like me?" he asked, spreading his wings out for balance while he climbed up onto the log. He felt Donat's hand on his shoulder, helping to steady him.
And then suddenly, there was nothing under him. There was not even the slight warmth of Donat's hand against his skin.
The Anima's breath caught in his throat, and he squeezed his sightless eyes shut behind his blindfold. Maybe there had been an inkling of a feeling the moment before there was nothing, but he could not describe it. Something passing through him, perhaps. Arlyn had no way of knowing.
"Arlyn!" Donat called out, deeply worried at how his brother had just fallen through the log he had been crouching on. The other boy had just gotten all misty and not solid! And with his physical form faded like it was, Arlyn just went straight through the log and landed beneath it on his hands and knees.
The goat knelt and tried to grab hold of the red-skinned boy to at least get him out from under the log, but his hands went through his brother's foggy body. "What's wrong? What happened? Why are you going away?"
The Anima thought he heard a voice somewhere. It sounded a little distant, and kind of muddled, too. It took him several moments to realize that he was screaming, and nearly drowning out the voice with his own noise.
Hyperventilating, Arlyn tried to get control of himself. Why could he feel nothing? Even air had a feel, and now that, too, was absent. Had he disappeared? What was going on?
"Arlyn! Arlyn, stop yelling!" the goat's ears were pinned back against his head at the noise. Desperately, Donat wondered what he should do. The Anima's hands and feet had disappeared almost entirely; only the faintest of red shadows remained. His wingtips and tail were mere ghosts as well. Was Arlyn going to disappear forever?

*Newton's Third Law 3
Donat's voice was no longer audible, and neither was Arlyn's own. There was nothing. It was like the nonsight of the Anima's eyes had spread to his other senses.
He had to remember where he was! He had to remember himself! He was Arlyn, and he was in the forest, sitting on a log, with his brother!
And with the same suddenness with which the whole ordeal had begun, it was over. There were twigs and bits of leaf litter pressed into Arlyn's palms. He could feel his wings against the branch, too. He was crouched under it now, on his hands and knees.
Full feeling rushed back to him in a pins-and-needles sensation then, making all his muscles tense up and lock.
"Arlyn!" Donat yelled over and over again as his brother nearly disappeared. And then, fulfilling his deepest wishes, the other boy returned to a state just as solid as he had been before.
"... Can you move?" the goat asked hesitantly, leaning down a little to touch Arlyn's shoulder with the very tips of his fingers. This time, they encountered solid flesh.
Tingles radiated from Arlyn's shoulder through his body, until he could feel something actually touching him there. Donat's voice sounded quite clear, though. "Nnng...." he replied inarticulately, still in considerable shock at what had happened.
The goat grasped Arlyn's forearms a little more securely and gently started trying to pull him out from under the branch. It would be easier for him to get up that way, if he did not have to crawl out himself. The Anima's skin felt a little cold and clammy, too, so Donat wanted to be sure his brother would have to do as little work as possible on the way home until he felt better.
"What happened?" Donat asked, though he had a feeling that Revenge was just as baffled as he was.
Arlyn shook his head a little, and slowly moved to sit up and cross his legs. "I don't know," he mumbled after a moment.
He could feel little sore scrapes on his hands and knees from being dragged, but he was thankful more than anything else that he could feel at all. He was here again, and whole enough to get hurt. He carefully wiped his palms off on his thighs, then licked at them, tasting a tiny bit of blood.
"Can you get up? We should get home and tell Daddy...." Donat leaned down to take hold of Arlyn's arm again, tugging gently upwards in a suggestion that he should stand.
"No! Don't tell him," Revenge insisted, flopping a little like a ragdoll as Donat tugged at him. He slowly started to climb to his feet, spreading his wings wide for balance. His tail found Donat's leg, too, and he curled it around the other boy's limb a little, needing more reassurance that there was someone else there.
"Why not?" the goat asked, sounding worried as he wrapped an arm around his brother's waist. "What if you go away again like that? Maybe Daddy can help with his magic."
"I don't think his magic can help," the Anima replied, starting to walk slowly alongside Donat. His body felt better now, but it was still somewhat hard to move. He was not sure why he did not think their father's magic would do anything for him, but it seemed true to him.
Donat nodded slowly and sighed, guiding Arlyn back towards the house. "Alright. I won't say anything." He narrowed his eyes a little. "But if it happens again, then I will. Even if Daddy's magic can't help, he might know what to do anyway."
The Anima hesitated a moment, then nodded. "Okay."
The secret would be kept for now because they were brothers. But the next time it happened, Donat would tell on him. Because they were brothers.

*This Will Only Hurt a LittleMyxo Mycota Doctor Mycota will now see Donat. Please proceed to her office. Asahi Kumoru Donat wandered into the office, looking around with deep curiousity in his wide blue eyes. For the boy's first real trip to the doctor, he did not seem scared or bothered in the least. His father had explained to him very gently and carefully that he needed to get some shots so he would not get sick, and that it was alright if Donat was scared, because shots bothered a lot of people. The goat failed to understand why this would be scary. Granted, he was not exactly sure what this process involved yet, except that Kumoru had assured him exhaustively that it would hurt, but it would only hurt a little bit and maybe ache for a day and then it would be over. Not getting sick sounded like a good idea, anyway. The mage followed his son in, a hand resting gently on the boy's shoulder. All the parenting magazines had offered all kinds of advice for taking a child in for his first vaccinations, but Kumoru had found them all so varied and generally conflicting, and so specific to the child that it would probably be best to just wing it.
Donat was, after all, the boy who had wandered away from home into the forest in the middle of the night with nothing but a granola bar and a cup of water. Kumoru figured he probably did not need to worry too much.Myxo Mycota Doctor Mycota had been absent from her office for quite some time, which would probably be apparent to the two just walking in. Little bits of stagnant dust wafted lazily about the room, and for once things were nice and neat as cleaning orderlies had nothing stopping them from doing their job. Myxo herself was busy being fascinated by a Newton's cradle she got for herself as a(n extremely early) Christmas present. As Donat and his parent walked in, she turned to face them, ending up being lightly whacked on the nose by one of the swinging steel balls. " Oh, Donat, 'uh? Cave goat, right? I got your file right'ere," she said in her tipsy, sleepy tone, pointing to said file that was on the desk next to her arrangement of vaccines. " What took y'guys sso long? I was expecting you a month ago!" It sounded likthe supposed doctor was trying to place the blame on someone other than herself-- but who could blame her, now having to pay for her own coffee as punishment for her neglectful behavior? " Sit on the bed and less' get started, kay?" Asahi Kumoru Kumoru gave the goat-boy a hand up to get onto the table, then glanced at the doctor.
"A month ago?" he repeated half to himself. Had it been that long? "My apologies," the mage told her with a slight bow. "We had someone try to break into our house, and so things have been a bit hectic since. They're finally starting to settle down now, though."
He forced a small smile and ruffled Donat's hair. "I think after this one gets his shots, we'll be able to relax for at least a little while."Donat nodded in agreement with everything his father said, his brows knitting a little as Kumoru mentioned the attempted break-in. After all the time that had passed since then, the goat was still at a loss as to why some random stranger would want to get into their house. Oh well. He figured he probably needed to have manners for the doctor, too, since his father was standing right there and all. "Hiyas, Doctor Ma'am," he said with a little smile and a wave, wondering faintly how she knew his name already. "Daddy says I need shots. What are shots made of?" Myxo Mycota Myxo waved off the guardian's surprise, grunting and getting to work. She grinned widely at the kid's question as she got everything together, though. " Well... shots're made of lotsa things that keep ya from gettin' sick. Some of'em have dead germs in'em so your immune system can learn how to fight'em... I guess s'kinda like learning how to use a sword on a scarecrow, uh?" A hand poised the usual needle above the kid's arm, and after the general this-might-pinch-a-bit warning, the vaccine was administered with little mess. " Your arm might be a li'l sore, but that'll wear off," the doctor concluded, slapping her hands loosely across each other in a familiar finality motion. " Y'know how to get outta here, right? Come by if anythin' weird happens." A smirk, and the doctor turned away to occupy herself with something else. Any questions would be liable to just bounce off her. Asahi Kumoru Donat, against his father's warnings, watched Myxo give him the injection with intense interest. His brows knit a little as he felt the pinch of the shot, and then a dull ache spread through the muscle of his upper arm as the vaccine went into it. He was all smiles again by the time the bandaid was on his arm, though. "That's cool," the goat said as he tenderly poked at his arm with his other fingers. "So now I won't get sick at all?" "Well, there are certain sicknesses you won't get. I guess just the usual childhood vaccinations?" The mage glanced up at Myxo, then back at Donat. "So don't think that means you can get away without doing that whole apple-a-day thing. Keep that up."
He ruffled Donat's hair a little and helped him down off of the examining table, then out of the office. Hopefully D-corp would cover the cost of the shots, but if not... what was another bill?
At least Donat had been alright with it. There were all those horror stories in the parenting magazines Kumoru would never admit to having read about children screaming like banshees when they got shots.
This deserved a reward. "Hey, let's go get some donuts or something on the way home."Donat could live with that. "Okay," he replied with a grin. He wore his bandaid with pride as they left the doctors' office.

*Becoming Big Brother 1
Donat walked alongside his father through the neighborhood. He was big enough to walk on his own, certainly, but something about the atmosphere of the cool evening made him want to hold Kumoru's hand anyway. Kumoru had said, "Let's chat a little, and go for a walk," and while the offer was definitely friendly and the chance to talk to his dad welcome, the goat still had a feeling that some of the news would be heavy.
"Do you remember how Miss Aylana was talking about me taking care of her baby?" Kumoru asked once they had gotten a few houses down the block.
"Yeah," Donat replied with a nod, looking up at the mage. "Why does she want you to take care of it, though? If you're not the daddy." He had been wondering about this since he had met the blue-skinned angel, but was never sure when would be a good time to ask about it. It seemed a bit of a sensitive subject.
Kumoru sighed. "I am not quite sure myself," he admitted. "But apparently her baby needs a guardian to survive, and, by some twist of fate, I guess, I happen to be that guardian."
The request had come completely out of the blue, honestly. One minute he was tripping by mistake over a young woman with a milkshake downtown, the next, the pair of them were sitting in an ice cream parlor, talking about how the meeting could not possibly have been coincidence.
Kumoru was not someone to place too much stock in fate, nor was he staunchly determined to resist it; why would one need to resist something that did not exist?
Daddy always got that look on his face when he thought about big things, Donat observed, watching Kumoru's features.
"I am excited about being a big brother, though," Donat offered after a moment with a small smile. And he really was. He and Arlyn could both play with their little brother or sister - the goat secretly hoped it was a brother - and they could all go for walks, too.
With a smile, Kumoru ruffled Donat's hair a little. Now that the boy mentioned being an older brother, the mage really realized how much he had grown since he had first arrived. His horns were longer, his skin had gotten a much richer pattern on it, and Donat had learned to count with those eight fingers of his. Donat's hair was starting to grow out patches of light brown from the roots, too, in places; maybe that was another way of showing that he was maturing?
"You'll be a good big brother," the mage told him, meaning every word. A little brother might be what Donat needed, too; he was certainly friendly and learning well to be polite, but he just had a certain recklessness about him that worried his father more often than not. Maybe having a little one to look after would instill him with a sense of responsibility to keep the little one safe. Ideally.
"Thanks, Dad," Donat replied. Then he asked, "Do you think he'll be blue? The baby?" He had already made up in his mind that the child would have to be a brother.
"I would imagine at least a little," Kumoru replied. "But I'm not very familiar with Miss Aylana's kind. She is something called a Fa'e, and so is the baby's daddy. You haven't met Lucien, but he looks very different from Miss Aylana. So we'll have to see what the baby looks like."
The goat nodded. "When is the baby coming?"
Kumoru shrugged. "I am not sure, really. Very soon, though. Didn't you tell me right after you came home that you could feel her baby kicking inside Miss Aylana's tummy? I think that means it's nearly ready to be born."
Oh, how little Kumoru realized he knew about how life came into the world, as opposed to leaving it.
"Miss Aylana has our phone number at home," he explained. "She says I should be there when the baby is born, and so she will give me a call when she needs me to come over."
"Ooh, so it could be anytime. That must be exciting!"
The boy's relative naivety was refreshing in some ways. Kumoru sometimes envied that he seemed to fear nothing.
"Yes, she could call at any minute, and I will have to leave right away. I might also have to be gone for a little while."
Now for the real point of the discussion.
"When that happens, I want you to be in charge of the house, okay, Donat?"
Donat looked up at his father with wonder and some enthusiasm. "Me? Really?" When he really thought about it, he realized he was probably the best choice in the house; Arlyn was older, but he was disappearing.
"What will I need to do?" Kumoru took care of so much of the home's working that the goat was not completely sure what all he would need to do.
"Just stay at home and make sure your brother and sister are alright," the mage told him. "I'm still not sure what's wrong with Arlyn, but keep an eye on him especially. Keep Serif inside, or at least close to home. If I'm gone for a meal, I have things in the refrigerator that you can make. You've made things in the microwave before; all you have to do is follow the instructions on the box."
The goat nodded, making mental notes of all of this. His first big responsibility!
"If anything bad happens, like someone tries to break in, call the police, or the neighbors. When I come home, I'll ring the doorbell three times so you know it's me."
"Okay." Donat hoped that no one would try to get in, though.
"Do you think you can handle all that? I can get someone to look after you all if you don't think you're ready." Donat would have to learn to take care of himself sooner or later, but Kumoru was not sure if he was asking too much of the boy too soon.
Sticking one finger in his mouth in a habit that had actually finally been starting to fade, Donat considered it for a long moment. Then he nodded and turned his bright blue gaze to meet his father's.
"I can do it," he told him with certainty. "I'll do it to show I can be a good big brother."

Krista_Darkangel_Silme Krista dabs at Aylana's forehead as she looks up Lucien " You think you can handle this? Or you gonna pass out of Ayla when the time comes?" she was trying to ease the tension as she looks down at Aylana smiling. Thanks to the low dosage of drugs, the pain wasn't as bad as before. Opening her eyes she shakes her head alightly " Mum call Amaris and Kumoru, they are friend of ours and they need to be here." squeezing Lucien's hand she falls quiet as she focus on her breathing. With a nod Krista slips out of the room as she looks through Aylana's phone book on her cell. Finding Kumoru first she dials it hoping someone who answer the phone, when she gets nothing but the answering machine she shakes her head " Hi Kumoru this is Aylana's mother. She wanted me to call you because were at the hospital. She going to have the twins soon and she wanted you here. So if you could get here that would be great." ending the call she looks through the next phone for Amaris. Getting the same thing with the call she leaves a message before returning to the room " I left them both messages, so hopefully they will be heer soon." taking Aylana's lans she winces as her grip tighten yet again. Aylana just wanted the pain to end and now. The lower half of her body felt like it was ripping apart. She didn't sign up for the pain at all. Shaking her head the tears started falling down her face " I want them out now!!!" Asahi Kumoru Kumoru flew down the stairs and managed to grab the phone just as the familiar click of someone hanging up played on the speaker as it recorded on the answering machine. He had missed the important information in the call, but he had a strong feeling he knew what it was about.
Logic, not fate, logic.
He pressed the replay button, and as the message played aloud again for him to hear, the mage found his suspicions were confirmed. He had to get to the hospital.
Having thought this over perhaps a hundred times in the last couple days, he had decided that it would be quicker to take the bus; there were no taxi dispatch stations near his home at all, and if he walked to the bus stop, he would only be shortening the total distance.
"Donat, Miss Aylana is having her babies!" he called as he shrugged on a light jacket over his decidedly-civilian attire. Today was not really a day for magerobes anyway. "Remember what I told you; take care of things while I'm gone!"
Kumoru checked his pocketwatch and waited 7 seconds before the boy gave a shout of acknowledgement. Then he headed out for the bus stop at a brisk walk.
With any luck, this would take no more than twenty-five minutes, but also probably no less. *Becoming Big Brother 2After Donat shouted his acknowledgement that he knew he would have to keep an eye on things in the house for a while, he realized just how quiet things were. He usually spent much of his time indoors being with his father, or playing with Serif or Arlyn. Arlyn was in his room at the moment, and Serif was napping for once. Well, he had to do this job right for Daddy. Donat shut the book he had been reading, and went to check around the house to make sure everything was in order. Sure, his father had only been gone about a minute, but still, it would not hurt to check. The laundry machine was running - Donat might have to move the clothes to the dryer, but he had done that before so that was no trouble. Other than that, things seemed alright. Dinner was still a few hours off, but he decided to go check the pantry anyway, just to remind himself what was available. Grasping the knob in his four fingers, he pulled the door open and scanned over the bags of chips and boxes of cereal for the little microwave noodles and Easy-Mac. There was also a can of peas that looked big enough to feed him and his sibblings. That all should be easy to make once he got hungry. Donat paced the kitchen for a few minutes, then went back downstairs for his book. He brought it up again with him, and plopped down in Kumoru's favorite chair in the living room. He could go back to reading there. Play at being Daddy for a few hours.

*Becoming Big Brother 3
Donat snapped awake as he heard the doorbell ring three times. Dad was home with the baby!
He hopped out of the chair where he had been sitting and reading when he had apparently fallen asleep, and realized that it was now nighttime. The goat had forgotten to turn on lights.
Feeling his way in the dark, he found the table lamp and clicked it on. He could hear his father jingling keys outside, so he shouted, "I'll be there in a second, Dad!" and rushed to the door.
Kumoru tucked the keys back into his pocket as Donat opened the door, and as he saw the boy's eager face, he could not help but break into a smile.
He picked up the baby carrier and held it up so Donat could see.
"Shh, he's sleeping," he cautioned. "But here's your little brother, Bhel."
The goat put his hands over his mouth and gasped with delight. Bhel was so little! He had gotten a little brother, just like he had hoped, and on top of that, he had horns, too! Five fingers, though, however tiny, but he had horns!
"Hi, Bhel," he finally managed in an elated whisper, wiggling his fingers at the new arrival.
Bhel's even breathing quickened a moment, and then a little hand moved to rub at his eyes. One opened, then the other, and then Bhel's little mouth opened into what might have been a smile before he started whimpering.
"Oh, sorry, was I too noisy?" Donat asked sheepishly, stepping back to let his father into the house.
"No, he's probably just hungry," Kumoru told the goat as he walked into the kitchen and sat down. "Can you grab the formula I bought? I left it on the step so I could pick this guy up again."
Donat nodded and brought it in, and watched as his father showed him how to follow the directions to mix the formula up.
Sensing that something was going on outside of his field of vision, Bhel squirmed a little in his carrier, then started crying.
"Would you like to try feeding him?" Kumoru asked, handing Donat the bottle of warm formula when it was ready. Then he picked Bhel up out of the carrier to hold him carefully in his lap. He was not sure if there was a very special way to hold a baby, but this way seemed alright.
Very carefully, Donat offered Bhel the bottle like the baby was going to hold it.
"I think you have to hold it for him," the mage suggested. "And maybe turn it up so the formula flows right into his mouth?"
The goat tried that.
Bhel fumbled to get his little mouth around the n****e of the bottle, and then suck on it. He slobbered a bit of milk, but drank enough to quiet him down.
Donat giggled, and tried to hold the bottle steady. "There you go, little brother Bhel!" he encouraged.
Kumoru stroked Bhel's hair a little while he drank the formula, and was silently thankful that Donat at least was willing to help him through this crazy baby stuff.

Donat I'm a big brother now! My little brother's name is Bhel, which sounds like "bell" but has an "h" in it. He has blue stripes, and his hair is really dark with a light patch in it. And he has horns just like me! His are smaller and red, but he still has horns. He's also kind of fussy and likes to cry, but I guess that's because he's just a baby. I can't wait till he grows up! I also got to meet my dragon, which is just as cool. It's a copper dragon and I don't know yet if it'll be a boy or a girl, but it'll be shiny like a penny. The egg likes sand, which is a little boring for me, but I guess the dragon can be different. I like green growing things more, like trees. Trees make good pillows, but I'd rather not say why I know that =P I went to class right before my brother came home, too. It was at D-corp. I'm the only kid in all of D-corp who has climbed up the building now! I can't wait to see Olly and my other friends and tell them. Dad was worried, I think, but I was okay. My back kind of hurt while I was climbing, though, like it does when I walk a lot. I should be okay, though, as long as I can always rest every now and then in the future. Okay, I should go. I think Dad wants me to help set the table for dinner.

Thankyou for all your hard work with us here at D-corp. Your child's dragon egg is near hatching, and we'd like to have you file another report on the progress of your child.
Enclosed is a sheet for them to fill out, you may help them. Also please include any and all changes in your child. Even the smallest detail may become of importance later on.
Sincerely D-corp

Kumoru went through the mail, eyebrow raising a bit as he came across the note from D-corp addressed to himself and Donat. Setting the bills and charity organization letters aside, he tore open the envelope and went through the contents. After thundering down the stairs, Donat slid across the patch of hardwood floor into the kitchen in his stocking feet. He spread his arms out and grinned at his dad, leaning forward a little in a bow.
"Heya, Dad, anything interesting in the mail?" he asked."Yeah, here's something for you," the mage replied, handing the boy one of the forms."Really?" Donat took it and plopped down in his seat at the table, squirming as he got his legs up underneath himself so he could lean more over the form.
"Oh wow, they're asking about my dragon!" he said excited. "Is it going to hatch soon, Dad?" Kumoru nodded a little, then went to get another pen so he could fill out his own section of paperwork. He was still not so sure about actually having a dragon around the house...."Seriously?" Donat's face lit up like a Christmas tree. "I can't wait!"
And then he set about dutifully scribbling down his responses.
