Once upon a time, there was a girl named Lethe in search of a Halloween costume. She decided, after a long and lengthy conference with her friends, that she was going to be a witch like that one girl in Nightmare Before Christmas who always got to whack people and come up with cool plans.
So she was going to be a Bad Witch, capital letters and all. This she had planned out in length. Unfortunately, it seemed no one wanted to help her -- the store where she had gotten her prom dress had nothing in the way of costumes, and the one Halloween store she had already visisted only had ugly witches in stock. The River Fa'e refused to have green skin and warts and a wrinkly face and an ugly dress -- if she wanted any of those things, she would've dressed up as her grandmother. Blegh.
She had quickly run out of all other alternatives. She purchased a pretzel from a cart on the way back from the Halloween store and sat on a bench in the marketplace, slowly picking off every little bit of salt before eating what was now reduced to bread baked in a funny shape.
Hunh, if there were any Good Fairy Godmother-type Witches, she could sure use one right about now.

Donat ran up to a storefront and jumped on the plastic Halloween welcome mat with both feet. The thing responded with a tinny wail followed by some equally fake-sounding laughter, which still managed to send the boy into a fit of giggles. Grinning, satisfied, he hopped back to his father's side and took his hand again, sparing a glance over his shoulder at the mat as it made a few last noises before falling silent again.
Kumoru waited patiently for Donat to finish playing with the Halloween mat. It was about the third time in the last ten minutes he had had to stop so the goat-boy could do that, but the mage tried to convince himself that it was most important that Donat had fun. This shopping trip was for him after all.
After all the excitement of having his house broken into, running into a mind-reading angel who apparently was going to give him her kid, and losing Donat for several days, the arrival of D-corp's summons to a Halloween celebration came as quite a relief. Shopping had become quite a relaxing task, especially when the mage was essentially at liberty to let Donat pick whatever he wanted to wear.
"Are we almost to the Halloween store?" Donat asked excitedly, gripping his father's hand with all eight of his fingers. He glanced eagerly around the marketplace for some sign of a store with costumes. It was a mystery which shop was the right one, though; it seemed like all of them had decorated their storefronts to a rather lavish extent. All around himself, the goat could hear the shrieks of animatronic ghouls, and the hum of fans inflating light-up lawn ghosts.
As he was looking around, the goat's gaze fell on a girl sitting by herself on one of the benches in the area. She was in a big pretty dress! Maybe that was her Halloween costume? Hoping she was having just as much of a fun time as he himself was, Donat waved to her as he walked.
