It's not time to sleep, my friendsWord Count: 558 It all started when the schools shut down. That was when Yvette had noticed something was wrong in the city. The girl had to sit herself down on the arm of the couch and ask her daddy to explain more fully about what was going on. Daddy was always up to date with the news, and even more so now that he was stuck at home with a broken leg rather than at work. So it was only when her daddy explained how a whole chunk of the city suddenly went into a comatose state that the girl realized the urgency of the situation.
Of course, there wasn't much she could do. She still had to go to work each day. And heaven forbid she cease working on her backlogged assignments from all that time in Barren Pines. Yet, there were some things which the girl could offer to do. One evening when her mommy was cooking dinner in the kitchen, the dark-haired teen managed to shyly squeeze out the question of if Mommy wanted Yvette to visit Mr. Darrow again. The woman sighed and patted her daughter on the head.
"Mr. Darrow was hit with whatever epidemic hit Central Destiny City, Yvette." The woman could see her daughter's lip quivering slightly in confusion, which only caused her to pat the child on the head once more.
"If you would like to take more flowers, I would not be opposed. I am sure when he wakes up, he will be content seeing someone was willing to visit him and leave him flowers." There was no doubt in the woman's voice, though her voice was also quiet in a polite manner. Mr. Anthony Darrow would wake up again. There were no questions about that in Mommy's voice. With a nod, Yvette accepted this answer before wandering out of the kitchen.
Mommy didn't like being interrupted while working in the kitchen.
The rest of the evening went as normal until Yvette got an idea.
There was so much free time now in the mornings, surely she could spare one morning and maybe go over to Tara's place to watch another Star Wars movie. It would be a nice break from worrying, something nice and simple to relax. Eagerly, the girl's fingers dialed on her clunky cellphone her friend's number. Yvette hadn't figured out how to use the phonebook on her phone yet.
Placing the phone to her ear, she found it rather odd that it didn't even ring. In fact, it went straight to voice mail. When the little beeping tone played, the girl left a message that was just as quiet as always.
"Um... hi... it's Yvette. I was wondering if you'd be up for watching another movie at your house later this week. You know. With the schools being closed and everything. Um... call me back when you get a chance."
The girl hung up the phone. When Tara hadn't called back within a day, Yvette called again. The phone went straight to voice mail again. Not wanting to seem like a worry wart, she didn't leave a message.
One voice message and 6 failed calls later, Yvette finally figured out what had happened. Yet another person she cared about was in the hospital. Yvette spent an hour crying in her room. It was all she could do.

Friends are the WorldWord Count: 708 Two visits down, two more to go in essence. Though, one of the visits to the hospital had been rather sudden and unexpected. Mentally, Yvette was still reeling over the fact Eva of all people had been hit with this strange coma-plague. Or maybe she was reeling from how one of her best friends was handling the whole ordeal. There had been absolutely no way that dear sweet Yvette could even imagine mentioning the fact that Tara was also in a coma. She clutched onto the remaining bundles of wildflowers carefully.
I promised him that and I still couldn't tell him
With a sigh, she entered yet another room in the hospital. There wasn't anything all that spectacular about this one. It was just like all the other ones. Stuffed to the brim with various unconscious patients. In this room was Tara and her elder brother. Yvette had only met the young man briefly, but she could tell he was a nice man.
None of them deserve to be here
She managed to find yet another chair to sit in and settled herself down next to her friend's bedside. Her friend's dark hair was matted with all sorts of wires and tubes attached to the teenager, and yet, despite all of this, Tara simply looked like she was sleeping. For a moment, the indigo haired girl just sat there, gazing over her friend's face. For a while, she seemed to forget that she still had work to tend to. Yvette was still awake, so she still had responsibilities.
At least ten minutes seemed to rinse over her without her noticing before she realized she still had the flowers in her lap.
"Eep!" Quickly, she attempted to find something to put the flowers in. However, she wasn't nearly as lucky as she had been in the previous rooms. There were no simple vases waiting for her to put the flowers into them. With a slight frown, she set one of the bundles onto a nearby table.
"I... I guess I should bring a vase or cup or something next time..." She attempted to laugh, but her laugh was weak. It was a bit difficult to talk to a friend who was in a coma. The girl sat herself back down again in the chair, then took Tara's hand in her own.
"I'm sure you've been told this... but you shouldn't be here."
Silence filled the air for at least 2 minutes before Yvette's voice disturbed the quiet.
"Oh... Um... I hope y-you don't mind... but I-i'm going to go visit Laney for you after this. I-i figured... you'd like that. I m-mean... I know y-you'd rather do it... but... um... you can't..."
Leave it to Yvette to make a one-sided conversation absolutely awkward. For another few minutes, more silence filled the air. The only noises were the beeping noises of the various machines in the room.
Eventually, the girl offered one last thing before getting up to her feet, drawing her last bundle of flowers against her body. She squeezed the hand that was in her own. "You have to promise to wake up, Tara. W-we need to watch more Star Wars. I... I can't do that without you. You kn-know everything there is to know about Star Wars... I... I'd be a mess without you t-telling me all of the important stuff..."
Had her talk with Topher done something earlier? Usually, if Yvette had said something like that before, she'd be a blubbering mess. Instead, she just seemed calm. Not happy, but just simply subdued. She gently placed her friend's limp hand back onto the bed, gathered the last bundle of flowers, and then went on her way again.
Perhaps it was not the most exciting visit Laney would get from a visitor, but Yvette kept her word. Gently, she let this unconscious girl who she only knew by name know that Tara was also in a similar state and that Tara had not forgotten her.
No. Tara didn't forget.
She was just asleep.
Like almost everyone in the hospital. The short girl left the hospital with empty arms and mixed emotions. Nothing out of the ordinary, yet it was completely out of the ordinary.
Typical Yvette Weaver.

It Isn't FairWord Count: 1,387 It had been one long school year. It wasn't everyday that someone magically returned from the land of the dead and had to make up for 2 years worth of lost work. Then Daddy had gotten hurt, and little Yvette had gotten a job so that the family could stay living in Destiny City. The days had blurred together, work and schoolwork taking up much of her time with the occasional time spent with her friends mixed in. It was always the hard worker that benefited in the end. Daddy and Mommy had always lived by such. Daddy would always say "If you didn't work hard to get something, then it wasn't worth it in the first place."
All of the make up work she had been doing would be worth it. Yvette Weaver had sent her request to the Destiny City School District for graduation status. The feeling in her stomach tickled as if she had a million butterfly wings fluttering about inside of her. It was difficult to tell whether it was a good feeling or a bad one. It was obviously a nervous feeling, but there were good nervous feelings and bad ones. The dark-haired girl had decided it must have been a good nervous feeling, like when someone got giddy.
The girl went to work, and that feeling of butterflies continued to linger through her belly. At least it was a distraction from the usual embarrassment of working at Elizabeth's Secrets. For the days she waited after, her cheeks were usually pale in comparison to her standard appearance while at work. Even Mrs. Ortiga seemed concerned enough that she attempted to check the small girl for a temperature. When Yvette's boss found that the small girl's temperature checked out and a small, shy explanation was offered, Mrs. Ortiga felt it was necessary to give the girl a big hug. With a wink, she cheered the girl on with a simple "I'm rooting for you!"
Yvette had sacrificed most of her free time during the summer to keep on top of all her owed school work. She had only seen her friends every so often. Yet all of them seemed optimistic that Yvette Weaver, of all people, would be able to graduate on time. Topher was constantly cheering her on with a smile, and Melody would give her hugs and kisses as reassurance of her confidence in the small adult.
One evening, after a long 10 hour shift at Elizabeth's Secrets, she came home. It did not seem any different from any other evening. Daddy was on the couch in the small living room. The large man had only recently started his physical therapy so he could walk again. His cast had been cut off, and now Daddy had a rather handsome looking cane. Maybe "handsome" wasn't the correct word, since it was a standard cane that the hospital lent off to the therapy patients, but Yvette felt as if she was allowed to be biased in this particular instance. Yet, there was something different about the scenario this time. The large brown-haired man held out an envelope.
At first, the girl just blinked curiously, not fully making the connection. The man smiled to her kindly and chuckled. "Pumpkin, it's addressed to you. It's from the Destiny City School District."
The girl's eyes for a moment lit up, sparkling almost like amethyst. She could have in her excitement forgot her manners, but that wasn't how the girl worked. Anyone who knew Yvette knew she thought about how she came across a bit too much. So rather than snatch the paper up from her father's hand, she carefully reached out, and for a moment hesitated before taking the envelope from his large hands. "Th-thank you, Daddy," she kindly offered.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Open it up, the anxiety is killing me, sweetie!" The man was now flashing his slightly yellowed set of teeth in a big smile.
"...b-but... what about Mommy?" It would be rude to not wait for Mommy, who was probably just as anxious as both parties currently in the house at the moment.
"You can tell Mommy that Daddy accidentally opened the envelope without looking at who it was addressed to." The man winked at the girl, but the girl shook her head.
"No Daddy, no lying to Mommy!" With that, she tapped her slim pointer finger on his nose, as if scolding him.
Even with the lightest of touches, the man fell back as if the girl had just bopped him with all her might against the nose. He was smiling and laughing, so he was obviously not hurt at all. "Very well, honey! I'll be good and wait until Mommy gets home."
So they waited, both sitting anxiously on the couch, waiting for the door to open again. It was still rather amusing to think that the man's daughter was so small in comparison to him. It was also amusing that the large man had begun to chew on his fingernails, where as the girl did no such thing. It was such a bad habit of his, and when Yvette picked up on the sound of his teeth nibbling on his fingernails, the indigo-haired girl turned to him and scolded him. "No Daddy! You know you aren't supposed to do that!" Once more she tapped her finger on his nose, and once more, the large man toppled back laughing.
The door swung open at that very moment, and the slim woman who stepped in with the grace of a feline had to ask "What is the special occasion today?" She was not used to Yvette sitting on the couch waiting for her when she arrived after work.
The man bellowed out confidently while waving his large hand at his wife, beckoning her to come join them all on the couch. "Come and join us, darling! Yvette got a letter from the Destiny City School District!" Yvette let Daddy do all the talking, because it was just easier.
The willowy woman smiled a rather gentle smile, and with a delicate nod, she took a seat on the opposite side of Yvette. Now surrounded by her parents, the girl looked to one side, and received a nod from her Daddy. She looked to the other side and received a confirming nod from her Mommy.
She had the largest smile she could possibly make on her small features, and using her pinky finger, she carefully began to rip open the envelope. Once the opening had been made, she pulled out the tri-folded piece of paper. The girl's fingers unfolded it one, two times before she started to read it quietly to herself.
Dear Yvette Weaver,
After reviewing your application, we regret to inform you that you have an insufficient amount of credits to obtain your High School diploma. To be able to obtain your High school diploma, you will need 17 more credits with your current school. If you have any questions...
The girl stopped reading at that point. She could barely see what she was reading anymore, because her vision was completely blurred by the tears that had started to escape the corners of her eyes. Nothing needed to be said, both Mommy and Daddy knew that the news was not anything good based off the girl's reaction. A large arm placed itself on the girl's shoulder. That was all it took for Yvette to instinctively turn towards Daddy, hug onto him as hard as she could and start sobbing into the front of his t-shirt.
"It's okay baby girl..." was all he could offer as he caringly ran his large hand up and down her back. The slim woman also looked as if she could cry, but kept her dignity in tact by simply letting out a sigh.
The evening they had been hoping would be all about celebrating had mutated into one of disappointment and comforting.
It isn't fair.
Mommy eventually left the couch to go make dinner.
It isn't fair.
Daddy remained with his daughter, letting her cry into his shirt for as long as she wanted.
She had done everything right. She had worked hard, she had made so many personal sacrifices. And all Yvette could think was one thing. It isn't fair.
It isn't fair.
