Meaning of Fear __________________________________ The Phone Call “No.” Lillian stated firmly from where she sat at the kitchen table. Her eyes were narrowed and glued to the raevan in front of her as she fiercely glared at him.
“But this is really important, Lil. They need me!” Iorek wrung his hands as he tried to hold Lillian’s gaze. Unfortunately she had the upper hand in the glare department after years of serving as the matriarch of their little family.
Lil rubbed her temples and set aside the paper she had been reading before Reks barged in. “Iorek…I know you want to help but this is not the time. You have no idea what’s out there or what kind of trouble Dr. Kyou is in. If he disappeared then something bad must have happened and I don’t want the same happening to you.”
The raevan frowned and set his large hands on the table so he wouldn’t fidget with them. Now they were face to face. “But that’s the reason I should go! If something happened to him than I’m one of the best ones to send out there. I’m strong and brave! I can handle it. I can help! You said I should never be afraid to lend someone a hand!”
“That’s true but when I said that I was referring to helping old ladies cross the street or standing up against a bully! Not rushing off into the unknown where any kind of monster could be waiting in the shadows. This isn’t just some everyday thing, Reks. This is some kind of paranormal or magical junk that is a lot more difficult to control and handle. You might be made of stone but stone can still break.”
They held each other’s stare for a few more seconds before Iorek scowled and pushed himself away from the table. Instead of fleeing right then and there he decided to pace before his guardian and think up something better to say. He hadn’t backed down from her just yet.
“I know you’re afraid, Lil. But if it wasn’t for Dr. Kyou I wouldn’t be here. We owe the Lab our help. I know we’ve avoided that place for a while now because you don’t want us getting involved in the unknown things but we can’t turn our backs on them in this moment.” He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck to help relieve the ache that suddenly was there. “Out of the three of us, I’m the best one to go. Out of the raevans I’m the strongest frei. If it’s something I can’t handle then I’ll just fly away!”
Lillian frowned, “We both know you would never fly away if someone was in danger and you could stop it.”
“If you let me go I’ll take precautions.”
For a moment Lil nibbled at her lower lip and stared at the wooden table’s many rings. She was thinking and weighing what her companion had to say. Maybe he stood a chance? Iorek was only this way because Lillian was similar. She never backed down from a challenge just like him. Surely she could see reason?
Iorek stared at her and waited for their eyes to meet again.
Slowly, Lil lifted her head and found Iorek’s face right where she knew they would be. He hadn’t moved an inch while she thought things through. Just like a statue.
Reks’ inhal quivered as she shook her head.
“I’m sorry, Reks. I know it means a lot to you. But you mean a lot more to me. You can keep in touch with those who go but I need you to stay here at home. We’re already a small family. I can’t afford to let us get any smaller.” And with that she was done with talking things through.
Iorek had lost.
It was late in the night when Iorek heard a knock at his door. He was just ready to hit ‘send’ on a message he was sending to Cesc about keeping him up to date on what happens in the jungle.
His heart leapt and he pushed himself out of bed hoping that maybe Lillian had come to give him the permission he needed.
Instead, in the dark doorway lit by the moon, stood Tyson.
Reks sighed and flopped back onto the bed. One of these days he would stop getting his hopes up.
“What is it, Ty?” The gargoyle grumbled as he pulled the blankets over himself.
The teen peered out in the hallway before he let himself in and shut the door. “I heard you and Lil talking earlier.”
Iorek winced and looked over at Tyson as he walked over to sit on the bed. “Eesh. Sorry. Were we loud?”
Tyson smiled and shook his head. “Nah. I was on my way to raid the cookie jar and got caught up in eavesdropping.”
Reks scooched over and made room for Tyson to lay down beside him on the bed. For a moment they didn’t look at each other and just stared up at the wall.
“Ya know…I think you should still go.”
“But Lil said…”
“Yeah, obviously I know what she said but I think she’s wrong. You’re right. We owe the Lab a great deal for what they’ve done for us. Who knows where Lil and I would be today if you weren’t here with us. I get goose bumps just thinking about it.” Tyson rubbed his goose-pimpled arm against Iorek’s cool one.
The boys shared a soft laugh before settling back into a serious tone. Tyson reached down and took Iorek’s hand, comparing his own to the raevans like always. “I want to help you. You’re brave, strong, and I know you would do your best to keep everyone safe. As much as we need you here with us, right now they need you more.”
“Tyson…” Iorek looked down at their hands. Ever since he could remember Tyson loved comparing them. A few years ago Tyson’s hands were so tiny but now? They were getting bigger just like him. Those hands were that of a young man, not a child. Why hadn’t he noticed this before? Suddenly his hand felt a little bit smaller clasped with Tyson’s and that was a hard feeling to have.
Tyson rolled over to face him. His goofy face was so serious in the dark. “You’re going to go with them. Leave a note for Lillian and I’ll tell her too. Just say you’ll be staying at base camp and not heading anywhere close to the jungle.”
Iorek’s chest tightened at the thought of lying to Lillian. It felt off not telling her the truth.
The teen nudged and tsked at him, “Don’t do that look. You shouldn’t feel guilty about this. You want to be a hero, right? This is a heroic part of that journey. We’ve read so many comic books over the years and this is just another piece of your development. If all goes well Lil will never know. If things don’t go so well…uh…we’ll just come to that when it happens, okay?”
The gargoyle stared up at Tyson and heaved a heavy sigh. “Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. I need to go. I don’t want to hurt Lil but this is bigger than us. I need to protect my friends and save Dr. Kyou.”
Tyson grinned and his eyes once again held a mischievous twinkle, “Spoken like a true hero. Alright! Lets write that note and pack your things. You’re going on an adventure!”

Meaning of Fear __________________________________ Cruz, LuLu, Luka, and Iorek At first, LuLu thought someone was trying to make a smart remark about her luggage decision. Mighty? The rabbit looked up to Iorek with more fierceness in her gaze than she was deserved. She immediately corrected her expression as she realized who it was that was commenting. Her features softened as she tilted her head and took her time taking in Reks’ form and face. She needed a few moments before she recalled the other raevan’s name. It had been years since their last meeting. Though the memories were distant, she recalled fond ones from the day. Her smile grew broad as he offered to help her. The rabbit nodded with renewed vigor. “That would be lovely.” She scooted the bag into a better position for him to grab. “It is also lovely seeing you again.”
Reks was certainly startled by the first look LuLu gave him. For a moment he was on the verge of panicking over what he could of done to receive such a stare. But as quick as it had come the look was gone and a sweet face rested in its place. He smiled back at her and took the bag with one hand while the other was offered to her, "Heh, just to refresh your memory the name's Iorek. We met a long while ago but I remember a toy store and a doll you just couldn't reach. How ya been?" He realized after he probably sounded a little too cheery for what they were about to embark on. Maybe it was his nerves that gave him that extra happy boost? Soon as those wheels on the bus got going Iorek's worries would set in, but for now he might as well ride the high.
She slipped her hand into his. Her small palm fit neatly into place and she could feel the weight of his arm as she shook it. The rabbit nodded and quirked a brow, "LuLu. I recall. I appreciated that at the time. Though, I do not have that doll anymore." Her wings snapped gently against her back. "Good and bad. Good for now." She smiled despite her words showing she held some optimism regardless of the reason they were all here. LuLu was not feeling nervous yet either. Maybe once the threat of danger turned into a promise things would change. For now though, things were peaceful enough in the group.
Iorek smiled wider, happy to hear she remembered it like he did. Course he couldn't relate to her giving the doll up. Most of his possessions he shared with Tyson and what was his alone he had kept. One these days he'd donate his old toys but not yet. "Well, I'm glad it's back in the good. You look great by the way. Congrats on the waist and tummy. Have you tried human food yet?" That was always something he was very curious about. He liked his rocks but lately he found himself staring like a begging dog at Lil and Tyson's food. Now to know another raevan had the ability to taste test all those sweet smelling foods? He had to say he was slightly jealous.
The rabbit helped Iorek heft her luggage into the bus. LuLu's eyes widened at his praise. Becoming sigel was some kind of accomplishment in her book, it was certainly something that had been earned through hardship, but she never considered it would be recognized by other raevans. The rabbit felt herself fluff with pride somewhat. “Thank you.” She nodded enthusiastically at the mention of human food. “I was eating that before I had a stomach. My favorite is carrot cake. It does not fill me up like other things. It is yummy though.” Human food was more for taste than any kind of nutritional value. LuLu enjoyed it all the same though.
"I haven't tried it too much." He licked his lips and thought about some of the foods he'd missed out on, "I'm still eating rocks but one of these days I hope to have it too. Course by then you'll probably have legs." Iorek grinned and made sure her luggage was secured and not at risk of tipping over and squishing anything. "Alrighty! Looks like you're all set, LuLu. Judging by this luggage you're probably going to be the most comfortable out of all of us."
LuLu giggled softly at Iorek's joke. It was good for lightening up the mood and it was what they all needed at this point so early in the morning. The rabbit also helped in making sure her belongings were situated properly in place. However, she did not need to worry about her bag being damaged. It was the other luggage that would need protecting. Once everything was positioned, LuLu ducked out with Reks. The sigel smiled bashfully, “I just like being prepared.” She drifted back into the crowd a bit now that her dealings with the luggage were over with.
Luka had packed lightly, but thoroughly. With his hobby of sleeping out in the woods every night, the Frei had gotten pretty good at learning to differentiate between what were and were not necessitites. He had managed to shove in some flashlights, flares and extra batteries just to be safe. There was no guarantee there would be light where they were headed, and... flares would be visible hopefully to everyone if something did go wrong. He had also packed a first aid kit, a jacket, and a fire starter for when the nights came. As he neared the buses, Luka noticed two figures. One was quite obviously LuLu, and the other... well the other was new to him. The frei deliberated approaching the two but decided against it, for now. Instead, he opted for putting away his luggage first.
The pack Anita had helped him with was little more than a carry on shoulder bag filled with stuff to keep Cruz occupied during the long bus trip. An MP3 player, hand held games, a couple books, and his guardian had packed similar for herself. Everything else inside was much more important and the extraeneous stuff would be switched out into her bigger suitcase once they arrived; first aid kits, flash lights, whatever crisis preparation equipment they could get ahold of for personal use.
While the croc looked around at all of the new and colorful faces, he felt mixed feelings of excitement and apprehension. This felt like some kind of field trip, almost like an adventure, but he knew this wasn't supposed to be fun and that once they arrived things would get serious. Even dangerous. He didn't understand why Anita was so determined to go and her mother had given her a lot of grief -- she was just worried -- but eventually she explained it to him. When he was still waiting to be born in Lab, one of the Raevans caused a situation and he was put in danger, along with other people she knew and cared about. He could get behind that. She just wanted to make sure no one in her extended family was hurt again.
Clutching the strap of his messenger bag, Cruz hovered while Anita was hauling her big suitcase to store it. He asked if she needed help but she declined. Looking around, at least on this side of the bus, none of the Raevans looked immediately familiar but the dim light of dawn was hiding many in shadow. Only a certain satyr's bright form immediately caught his attention and Cruz hovered over. His smile was muted, tired and uncertain, but present all th same.
"Luka," he rumbled as he approached, second guessing whether he had gotten the frei's name right for how long it had been since they spoke.
"Cruz!" The Satyr replied, giving the Croc a sunbeam smile. "It's been a while! How are you? You look tired." It was a wonder that Luka still remembered Cruz's name after how long it had been since their initial meet. "Is it just you? Or will Anita be coming as well?" He couldn't help but look around and try to spot the other's young guardian.
"Mmm," he mumbled affirmatively, rubbing one of his eyes with the back of his hand. His smile brightened despite it. "Nita is here. She's putting bags away." Noticing Luka's searching, he turned to the side and pointed with one clawed finger to Anita, also tired, waiting for her turn to stuff a big rolling suitcase into the storage compartment. She looked tired too, perhaps more than Cruz, but she was too far away to notice their glances. "Is your -- mm -- Jez? Here?"
"Oh really?" When Cruz motioned towards Anita's direction, Luka's eyes followed until he spotted the young woman by a large bag. One might have thought they were going to on a summer vacation instead of a rescue mission with all these big bags. "Elai? No, he has an important client and their family coming in over this week. So, he'll need to stay and work." He explained. "Otherwise he would've wanted to accompany me. Or, maybe he would've asked me to stay while he went." The reluctance his guardian had shown towards him regarding his decision to help with the rescue mission was stuck in his head. "Is Anita reluctant to have you along too?"
Cruz wasn't sure what was in the bigger bag, now that he thought of it. Probably more to do with Anita's needs than his own, like spare clothes and food. She also probably packed their tooth brushes and bathroom type things, not that he had many. "Ah," he responded simply to the explanation, rubbing one of his eyes with a finger. "Mmm, a little. She wanted to go though. Said it was okay if I wanted to stay but I wanted to come. I don't really remember Dr. Kyou but I don't want him to be in trouble."
"I don't remember him at all. I don't think I've ever seen him." Luka commented. It was weird actually, now that he thought about it. This man who was his proposed creator, and he'd never even met him. He just knew him by name. "Hopefully we'll find him soon before there's more trouble."
It was hardly a memory for Cruz. He only vaguely recalled waking up, everything was blurry and sterile, and there were hands examining him before he was set into a waiting room. He didn't even know for a fact those hands had been Dr. Kyou's but it made sense, given the circumstances.
"Yes," Cruz rumbled, stifling a yawn with the back of his hand. He glanced around again, squinting against the dawn. There was another form that was familiar, with its rocky texture and long cylinder arms. The croc tilted his head, then smiled and nodded when he decided it was, in fact, Iorek he was seeing. "Luka, there is Yorek. Do you know him?" he pointed, not yet noticing the other Raevan near him as she was blocked at his current angle.
Luka followed Cruz's gaze to the gray Raevan beside LuLu. "No. I don't know Yorek." He replied, his eyes moreso on LuLu than the new Raevan Cruz had mentioned. "Would you like to introduce me to him?" It was probably a good idea to get on some kind of familiar term with the other Raevans he hadn't met yet just in case he got in a search party with them.
His smile broadened at Luka's question, a bit of excitement catching in his eye at the prospect. Cruz nodded, "Let's go say hi," and adjusted the strap over his shoulder before hovering nearer. It looked like he just finished putting a big back into the storage compartment as well, so now would be the perfect time to engage before they had to board. "Yoooorek," he called as their distance closed, voice scratchy and groggy but there was still a bubbling happiness at getting to see another frei he knew here.
LuLu's ears perk as they caught a familiar voice. Croaky but cheerful. Her eyes scanned the crowd until she saw Luka. She offered the satyr a nod of her head and the faintest of smiles and left it at that. Her gaze then shifted to the other frei nearby. Her eyes widened. "Cruz."
Reks jumped when he heard that voice and quickly turned to look towards the oncoming green raevan and his friend. Cruz. The gray raevan's face immediately flushed red as memories of their first meeting came back for a visit. "C-Cruz! Uh...hey, you're coming on this trip too?" He smiled widely while internally he fought away the peculiar feeling of butterflies in his chest. "It's nice to see you again. How are you? What have you been up to? Um..your friend? Hi, uh, I'm Iorek," He held his hand out even though the two had yet to close the distance between them "And this is LuLu...but...you probably already know her and..uh..heh." Word vomit, as Lillian would call it, and at this rate he was vomiting all over the place.
As they approached he noted movement behind Iorek. When the bunny girl first came into view he was still all smiles; he didn't recognize her as she was now, her appearance and scent completely different and she posed no threat. When she muttered his name he tilted his head, smiling but his brows knit with some confusion. Had they met before? Or had she just heard of him? Iorek's warm but bumbling greeting set him back into a steady pleasant demeanor and he stopped just a few feet from them.
"Yes. Lots of people are coming, mm?" He couldn't quite see the flush in the gargoyle's cheeks in the current light. "I'm good. This is Luka, he says he doesn't know you." Once that short name left Reks' lips, Cruz froze. His smile dropped and his eyes widened. Immediately his gaze shifted to the quiet sigel. It took a few moments for his eyes to trace over her ears, her braids, but when his mind put a filter of seeping ink over her, it all fit together.
Cruz backed up some, just enough to be safely out of arm's reach. Both hands clutched to the bag on his shoulder. "...LuLu?" his brow furrowed worriedly, green eyes locked with her bright purple ones.
Luka returned LuLu the silent greeting. A slight bow of his head, enough to acknowledge her presence but at the same time let her know things were still stiff between them. He turned his attention to Cruz and Iorek. "Hello, I'm Luka." The Satyr gave Iorek a rather warm smile. "A pleasure to meet you. And yes, I do know LuLu." He left it at that.
Luka's brows furrowed as he noticed Cruz's sudden change in demeanor. "...? Cruz?" The manner in which the croc had said LuLu's name hinted at some sort of history between the two.
LuLu stayed in place, remained small. Anything to take away from the threat Cruz was envisioning. She offered him a reassuring smile, but in the back of her mind she was worried at his reaction. Would it be like Luka’s? One of her delicate hands poised in the air and waved from side to side. “Hello again.” Her expression faltered a bit. “Are you ok?” She was not just asking how his day was going. LuLu was genuinely curious how their meeting had affected him.
"Oh! Well, I'm glad we get to finally meet, Luka. At least with all of these people showing up we finally get to be introduced." Reks continued to smile even though inside he was wondering what to do with Cruz? The green raven seemed so cool and at ease while he, on the other hand, was on the verge of melting. Or at least he did until he saw LuLu.
"Heh, so, nice to see you all know each other already." Course it didn't seem like they were sailing on calm waters just yet. Reks felt uneasy at the tension between the trio but he kept the polite smile, "Surprised too, Cruz? LuLu gained her torso! Pretty neat, huh?" Maybe that was it? Maybe Cruz just didn't recognize her after she'd grown? Or perhaps they had a deeper history than he thought.
Surprised was one way of putting it. Cruz's gaze drifted to Iorek, lips parting nervously, then he looked back to LuLu. She was very different now, and it seemed she was also different to Reks. Was he unaware of what happened to LuLu before? He could feel Luka's tension beside him but the satyr wasn't making any defensive moves either and LuLu, herself, was not making any threats.
"I'm..." he started, lips creasing tightly as he stared at the sigel with apprehensive confusion. Was this how she normally was? Was everything fine now? "I'm okay. Are you...?" Anita knew her, she assured him after LuLu attacked him that she wasn't normally like that. Even so, it had hurt and he was scared, then. "Are you... better? LuLu?"

Meaning of Fear __________________________________ Cesc and Iorek Cesc closed his eyes and pressed the side of his head against the bus window. There was a quiet rhythm to the wheels that made him feel sleepy. And there was a certain expression on some of the others' faces -- some his friends, others he did not know -- that made him feel a touch anxious.
He tried to remember Dr. Kyou. Golden eyes, he had a recollection of. Black hair. An easy smile. Vivi had liked him, and he was quite young but quite in grateful awe of the man.
They were only impressions. Not enough to go by, not to catch the man's 'scent' with…
Nevermind. It was an impossibility this far away, anyhow. Cesc pulled himself up and looked around the bus for anyone whom he had not seen in a while.
Iorek's heart was racing and the adventure had yet to begin. He took a deep breath and sunk deeper into the seat. The truth was, he hadn't fully convinced Lillian that this was going to be a safe trip. In order to get this far he lied and somehow, much to his surprise, had gotten away with it. Thank goodness for Tyson and his quick thinking.
But now that Reks was on the bus all that confidence he possessed earlier was gone. Courage had burned brightly when he explained to Lillian why he had to go. He felt that he was strong enough to protect himself and others. So it was for the benefit of the group that he went!
The raevan thought he'd be happy after making it this far and instead he was sick to his non-existent stomach.
He groaned and leaned forward to rest his forehead against the seat in front. The floor wasn't so interesting to stare at so he glanced to the side and saw a familiar pink.
"Cesc?" It was going to be a long ride and he'd get over this troubling guilt-ridden nausea talking with friends. "Hey, you."
Cesc saw Iorek almost at the same moment as Iorek saw him. It was a moment of instant relief, the tension in the stag's shoulders dropping almost instantaneously upon making eye contact with his friend. It had been a long time since he'd met Iorek -- they had not spent long periods with each other -- but he knew much of the Raevan from Shepard's descriptions, and felt close to him all the same.
"Iorek!" Rhedefre said cheerily, waving the gargoyle over. "It is nice to see you -- I hope we will not be in need of your strength on this outing."
Reks smiled widely and maneuvered himself into Cesc's seat. It had taken a long while for them to meet and they hadn't really seen each other since. It was weird considering how much he hung around Shep.
"Heh, well I'm usually just a paper weight so if there's a chance to use my strength I wouldn't mind it." He chuckled but by that he meant just lifting things. Honestly, as much as Reks talked about beating up the bad guys he was nervous to actually engage in an actual fight.
Glancing around before focusing back on Cesc he asked,"Do you think we'll actually run into some action?" Reks didn't want to show it but he did look a little worried.
Cesc let out a faint laugh as Reks described himself as a paper weight -- it was not a happy laugh, more of a release of anxiety. He shook his head slowly, and his brow furrowed in thought. None of them really knew, did they? No matter what expressions others held on the bus, none of them could be described as confident. The bottom line was that they were all heading into the unknown.
"I wish I could say," the stag said at last. "I hope it will not be necessary to fight. Just to look. But…" He lifted his shoulders in a slim shrug.
"But you, whomever goes with you will be quite relieved, I am certain." Cesc clapped Iorek on the shoulder, trying to lift his spirits.
Reks nodded in agreement, "Mm hmm, I rather be a search party than an army, too. With this many of us we should be able to find Dr. Kyou in no time." At least that's what he was hoping for.
"Me? Nah, I think a lot of folks will want to partner up with those who have their torsos. They're a lot stronger than us freis. But if we do spilt up I'll definitely be doing my best to keep my partner safe. I haven't been doing all this training for nothing!" He grinned and flexed his arm for Cesc, waggling his brows in a goofy manner.
"Course all those scary movies say it's best to stay together...so maybe we'll just be a big patrol?" Although that probably wasn't likely considering how vast of a forest it was they were heading into.
Reks thought quietly for a second and then turned his smile back on as he gave Cesc a look over. "Now, lets see...I have strength, but what's your gift? It's gotta be something really neat." If Shep had told him he couldn't remember now and it was always a good idea to know what everyone else was capable of before venturing into the abyss.
Cesc turned and looked behind them as Reks spoke, looking at the others. Who would he want to be with? He had no idea. Everyone brought their own talents to the table. Reks' was strength, certainly -- but what of the others? The green-haired one, the rabbit-eared, the older man sitting amongst them…
He lifted his shoulders in a shrug. "Mine? It is nothing. It may not even be useful. I can … locate things, lost things." He laughed, a slightly rueful sound. "It SOUNDS useful in a search party, certainly, but it is no charm. I cannot find something unless it calls to me, and I have no control over that."
His mouth straightened into a line. "I hope Dr. Kyou does call out. I have never had to find a person."
Reks whistled, "I'm impressed. Now that is a cool power." He playfully nudged his seat-partner. It looks like they were both working to keep the other positive and at ease. "He could! And if he does you'll find him just like a bloodhound on a case."
He sat up and peered around the bus like a prairie dog before he plopped back down beside Cesc, "So do you know everyone by now? I've been around here longer than you and I still don't know some of the people on this bus. Think that's bad?"
Half of Cesc's face lifted in a smile at Reks' compliment, his eyes softening. He allowed a sort of cautious optimism to enter his voice and expression. "I hope I can help."
But with that, and a punctuating sigh, he buoyed himself. Looking around, he laughed and patted Reks' shoulder. "I know most -- I will tell you whom and we can see if between us we know everyone."
And the conversation drifted to other avenues.

Meaning of Fear __________________________________ **taken from Kitten's Revontulet journal found HERE **Revontulet checked herself in the mirror once more, causing Doe to smile fondly at her charge. The moonstone had spoken about the other stone frei frequently since meeting him on the bus on the trip out to the forest but had come up with little when calling the number listed in the Lab directory. Apparently the horned one had been...well, Doucette would rather not think about what he was after the forest. Although the two of them had spent very little time there, she had heard things from other guardians and was grateful for her charge's wellbeing.
Finally though, a meet-up had been set and now Ren preened over her outfit, a little white peacoat with soft fur along the collar and earmuffs to match. She looked warm and comfortable and sweet with the smile that was upon her lips at the thought of meeting Reks once more. Too much time had passed for her liking. Although all of the raevan's Ren had met held a special place in the girl's heart, none of them shared quite the same qualities and interested her in the same way.
Star gazing, she had suggested. Just a little bit of a quiet evening where the two of them could possibly get to know each other a little better. Hopefully the other frei would not find it too boring. Ren had picked the perfect night - the night of the height of the Geminids shower - in hopes that there would be something a little more interesting going on in the sky for the other.
"Are you sure you don't want me to come?" Doe held the aurora's earmuffs as she tweeked her hair, pushing a loop back behind her ear before pulling it forward once more, watching it curl against her cheek and frame her dark lashes.
"Yes. We will be fine." There was patience in her tone but the frei was growing tired of her guardian asking the same question so many times. There was little she could do though, unless she revealed just how much she got out at night without her guardian's knowledge. So she smiled at the redhead in the mirror before pulling her jacket a little tighter about her thin shoulders and reaching for the headband of the muffs. "I promised to take the ferry over. I wont fly." Ren knew how Doe hated it when she flew the short distance to the shore, so she had given her word that she would take the hated boat in order to further assure her guardian that she would be ok alone. That she was young but responsible.
A little while later she was at the meeting spot her and Reks had agreed on, close to the area where they would be ending up. The grass crunched with frost under the human's feet, but Ren did not feel as much of the chill, her rune glowing steadily under her coat. Although she was fairly impervious to the weather, the coat was for show as it often made others uncomfortable if she wore her usual attire. Plus, it was really a cute look on her.
"Reks!" At the sight of the rock frei her smile grew wide and she moved towards him, her voice soft and warm as it caressed his name. With wings lofted high and eyes practically glowing in the same way her hair was (for she'd grabbed a quick bite on the way over) it was obvious how happy the aurora was to see Iorek.
After the terrifying camping experience he and the other ravens had gone through something wasn't feeling right in Iorek. The situation had been frightening, but what scared him even more was how he felt after coming out of that jungle. Relief didn't magically just lift off his shoulders when they escaped. Instead he felt heavy with dread. No, something wasn't right in him at all.
As soon as he got home Iorek didn't want anything to do with this family or friends. He had retreated to his bedroom and that was where he stayed until Lillian managed to coax him out.
Now somehow here he was outside, dressed in a warm hoodie and scarf, awaiting the pretty raeven Ren. He should of been thrilled. The kind of thrilled that was all about bouncing off the walls at the chance to spend time with the girl, a very nice girl at that. But he was worried. What if something set him off like last time? It would be just him and her...alone..at night...honestly this was the perfect set up for a horror movie. Maybe this would be the impromptu remake of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Iorek hung is head and heaved a heavy sigh. What a terrible mood to be in when he was supposed to be getting to know Ren. Oh Ren, a girl who just happened to give him a kiss on their first meeting. Not many guys got that. And instead of bringing flowers and chocolate he had brought a telescope and a frown.
His ears perked when he heard his name. Quickly he whirled about to see the shimmering raevan hurrying over to him. His scowl was demolished in an instant at the sight of her. She looked radiant. From the way she was glowing, Ren belonged up amongst the stars.
"R-Ren! Uh...h-hey." Iorek quickly straightened up and smiled as they locked eyes. "Wow, uh, heh...how are you?"
The aurora had noted the brooding nature of the other frei as she'd approached, but dismissed it as his smile took its place upon his features. She preferred this look to the other, and decided not to press him about the unhappiness that had been there a moment before.
"How have you been?" Ren asked, tilting her head like a curious kitten as she moved close to Reks, surprised at the telescope in his hands. "You came prepared!" She was immensely pleased with this outcome, for she'd obviously been too preoccupied with her own vanity to have bothered with such a thing.
"I think I found us a good spot," she said, looping her arm into his and pulling him gently towards an area less crowded.
Reks flushed and fiddled with the telescope in his hand as she leaned in. He shyly glanced up at her as a faint blush heated his cheeks, "Me? Um, I'm good..how about you? It's been a while since I've seen you."
His eyes lingered on her until she pointed out the telescope he was rubbing raw by now. "Oh! Oh yeah, heh, I thought it would be handy for us. My vision is good at night but if we want to see the stars this little trinket should help us." But he still should of brought flowers or something. Even if Ren was happy with this it wasn't exactly an exciting present.
When their arms locked, Iorek bit his lower lip and hoped Ren didn't hear the squeak that came out of him. Why hadn't he been going out again? Temper tantrums were worth the risk if it meant cozying up under the stars. "Y-You did? Awesome. We are definitely prepared!"
Lifting a free hand, Ren waved it absently, dismissing the question as she replied. "I haven't done anything really. Doucette says I am too young to do many things." The frei turned her face up towards Reks' with a little pout of a frown that quickly returned to a wide grin of excitement.
There might not have been a present, but she had not expected one and was thus not unhappy not to receive one. Seeing the other stone frei was more than enough to cause her heart to feel like a meteor shooting across the sky.
"Yes! I heard that if you see a falling star, and you make a wish, it will come true! With so many falling stars, we are bound to be able to make a wish." Revontulet took in a deep breath and held it a moment, thinking over all the wishes her mind held before letting out the breath in a woosh! "What would you wish for?"
"Too young?" Iorek chuckled and gave a dutiful nod, "Oh yeah, I've had that said to me too. But I guess us going out like this means something. I'm glad you were able to make it."
Iorek turned his eyes towards the sky and looked about in hopes that maybe the stars would already be zooming across the sky. "Hmm...me?" Reks laughed again at the sound effects. "I don't really know. World peace? Or maybe just more wishes. How about you?"
Honestly he would wish for this nagging feeling to go away...and maybe another kiss from Ren. But that would just be his own little secret.
Ren lifted her shoulders in a small shrug, her wings giving a flutter of irritation. There was simply no way that Doucette would have kept her from coming out to meet Reks - not after she'd worked so hard to get in touch with him.
"You can't wish for more wishes," Ren said, poking him in the shoulder with a finger and wrinkling her nose at him, "That's always been against the rules." No word on the whole world peace thing. It was kinda lame, but she was already shooting down one of his ideas - no need to destroy another!
"I'd wish to spend more time with you." Revontulet's words were open and honest, not a hint of teasing or coyness. She had not liked that it had been so hard to see the stone frei, and now that she was with him she wasn't going to play games.

The Meaning of Fear __________________________________ Home
Iorek is back from the jungle. “Iorek…hey…Reks, can you hear me?”
A little tug, a slight nudge, and then something warm curling into his hand awakened the raevan’s senses.
Reks’ body jolted at the contact and he quickly glanced to the side it was radiating from. There, close enough to share her heat with him was Lillian.
The gargoyle squinted and muttered something under his breath. He looked confused. How did she get on the bus?
Iorek looked up.
Or…when did he get off it?
There was the ceiling with the giant chandelier. And to his sides were the rare vases and clocks from Eastern Europe. He was home.
But Reks didn’t even remember getting off the bus and floating to the doorway.
“How?” He asked and his voice cracked. He hadn’t said a word since boarding the bus to leave the jungle.
Lillian smiled gently and guided him into the living room. As they walked she ran her fingers along the fractures in his arm. She had yet to mention his injuries and in this state there was no way to justify scolding him for what he did. By the look of Reks, Lillian could see the jungle was way more than either of them thought it would be. It was concerning.
“The bus came and dropped you off. I don’t know how long you were there for. We were at the Lab looking to see if they brought you all back there.” She laced her fingers with his, “When we got home you were just floating in the foyer. Didn’t utter a word and you were barely moving. You just were staring at the wall…”
She shivered recalling that moment. Lil could still vividly recall the feeling of her stomach plummeting, heart racing, and cold shudders racing across her skin.
Not only her own feelings, but just the look of utter hopelessness Reks wore when they found him.
Lillian paused in their walk and gently turned Reks so she could look up at him.
Iorek noted that she too looked absolutely exhausted. Stress and zero sleep did that.
“You don’t remember any of that, do you?” She asked him with worry dripping from her tone of voice.
He just shook his head.
They sat down on the couch as Reks tried to remember the last few hours but all he could recover was fog and fuzzy fragments.
Lillian laughed weakly. She was nervous. “I was so mad when I saw you. I was ready to shake you silly but when you didn’t even acknowledge me…it was scary. I guess you got lucky.”
The two sat in silence for a few moments before Lillian added, “If you’re wondering about Tyson he’s outside grabbing some rocks on the beach, your favorite.” In truth Lillian didn’t want him to see Iorek like this. With the state Iorek was in, he had left the door open when came home. Unsure what she would find inside Lillian had sent Tyson down to the beach.
“I messed up, Lil.” Iorek whispered.
“What?” She arched a brow and leaned in closer, unable to hear him.
Iorek drew a shaky breath, his vision suddenly swimming in tears. He ran a clawed hand through his hair but didn’t bring it back down. He just held the position for a moment as his body began to shake.
“Iorek…shhh..hey, let it out…it’s okay.” Lillian grimaced and leaned close to him. One arm linked around his while the other rubbed soothing circles into his back.
Before long another presence was on the couch. Tyson was back and leaning against Iorek to offer support. He was quiet but he was there for his friend.
And that was it. Reks hunched over and openly sobbed letting out all his fears, frustration, and distraught feelings flow from him.
Lillian and Tyson looked at one another as they wrapped themselves around their trembling family member. They would get through this. Iorek was a crumpled mess but he would not have to get through this alone. They were there for him. He protected them, and they would do the same for him. They were the Maevin family: strong, resilient, and always there for one another, no matter what.

 Catching Up – May 5, 2014 Cesc: Reks! It's been a while!
Reks: Cesc! 8D It's been crazy long! *pulls him into a big hug*
Cesc: *returns the hug* I thought of you the other week, I went to see Captain America 2.
Reks: Oh wow! How was it? Exciting?
Cesc: *surprised* You didn't see it? I thought you'd be the first in line.
Reks: Heh, everyone has been busy and I rather not go alone so...I haven't seen it. *grins sheepishly and shrugs* I really want to see it though. Did you like it?
Cesc: I loved it. I thought it'd be right up your alley. *smiles* He seems like the kind of guy you'd like.
Reks: He's really something else. *u* A great hero in both the movies and comics! I loved the first one. He's just so cool!
Cesc: He really is. *laughs* I think he might actually be my favorite. He's very ... level-headed.
Reks: He is? *grins with delight* He's actually more like you than me I think. Ya know, I have a ton of his comics if you wanna read any of them!
Cesc: You think so? *shakes his head* No -- I thought of you instantly. But I would love to read some, certainly.
Reks: *flushes* Me? Really? *leans in very curious* How so? Do tell! Tell me when we go to my house!
Cesc: Yes -- you both have a strong moral urge, a lot of physical strength, and still maintain a positive outlook and sense of innocence.
Reks: *flushes even deeper and pulls Cesc into a bear hug* Awww! Cesc! TuT You're so sweet! Hehe, I could only dream of being like him.
Cesc: *laughs in Reks' embrace, patting him on the back* You will be. I'm sure of it. *pauses* What have you been up to? You know, since...
Reks: *ruffles Cesc's hair, pretty darn happy* If I got someone believing in me maybe I can be! Just need a cool outfit to wear. *course then his joy trails off at the question* Um...nothing too much really. Just the usual. Kind of hibernated when it got cold out...ya know. Stuff like that.
Cesc: *nods, laughing as his hair gets ruffled -- ever since Reks clobbered his antler in the jungle, he feels a spike of anxiety when someone ruffles his hair, but he's proud to see that it's been slowly disappearing* We should find you something. Maybe Vivi has one? She has many costumes, you know. *his smile fades* Well -- ah -- I know how you feel. I saw you briefly at the potluck, though! Did you enjoy yourself?
Reks: Heh, and then I would just wear it everywhere. Not too sure that's a good idea. *chuckles and sighs* It was nice. Had to leave a little early but I did enjoy it. Did you have a fun time? And um..how have you been after all that stuff in the fall?
Cesc: Why not? *grins* Not like we don't get enough attention for how we look. *pauses* It was... difficult. Really hard for a while. But it turned out okay, I think. *shakes his head and takes a breath* Nothing to do but grow from it.
Reks: Heh, maybe I'd be mistaken for him! With uh...some added wings and horns and no lower half. 8T We can just say I'm a skull! *nods* That's a good way to look at it. You went through so much but you're doing pretty well. Looks like a lot of the others are.
Cesc: *smiles, then says earnestly* What about you, though?
Reks: Me? For like, stuff after? Eh. *he shrugs and huffs* Not as good as you but I'm working on it.
Cesc: *softly* Do you want to talk about it?
Reks: I think you'd get bored. It's really not that interesting. Just junk everyone's gone through I bet.
Cesc:*his ears fall a little* Not at all, Reks. If you want to, I am always here -- but don't feel pressured to, either.
Reks: *smiles and leans against him* Mm...you sure you don't mind? If you find it dull then you don't have to listen.
Cesc: *shakes his head* I could never find it /dull/, Reks.
Reks: Thanks Cesc. I guess I could tell you but um...lets go for a walk while we chat okay?
Cesc: Sure. *starts to float down the pathway*
Reks: So...uh...rem...I think something might be uh, wrong with me? Maybe? I don't know...*huffs as he floats beside Cesc, wringing his hands*
Cesc:*tilts his head* What do you mean?
Reks: I'm usually pretty calm about things but lately I just get really really angry. So much so that I'm ripping up or breaking my toys and I don't even remember at the end of it why I did it. I think I'm being mean to Lil and Tyson. They say I've gotten really snippy and haven't been spending a lot of time with them. So...yeah. And I don't think I was ever like this? R-Right?
Cesc: *the look of concern on his face grows as Reks continues* That doesn't sound like you, no... *he frowns* Did you ever talk to anyone after we got back? I mean... you were very angry in the jungle. If you haven't let it out, it might be, you know.. coming out any way it can?
Reks: *he shrugs again and looks away* Not...really no. I didn't want to scare anyone by telling them plus I didn't think it was that big of a deal. We made it out in one piece and that is what matters.
Cesc: *concerned* I don't know that that IS all that mattered...
Reks: After what we went through I think it is. It was scary and crazy and you almost died!
Cesc: So did you, Reks! And Zeke, and Anya -- none of us came out alright. We came out in one piece, yes, but not alright. You can't keep that all inside.
Reks: It wasn't anything like what you guys had to go through. I should be fine. I will be fine. I was fine! Just have some weird moments here and there. Besides, there's no one to talk to. I don't want to scare my family and I didn't want to scare my friends. It's not like I've done anything to people...just...my stuff. A lot of good really cool stuff...is now in the trash. *growls and takes a deep breath* If I let it out I break things.
Cesc: *frowns* Reks... you don't have to compare your experience to mine or anyone else's. Bad is bad. And you don't have to worry about scaring anyone -- we'd rather be there for you.
Reks: Maybe you but I don't know about the rest of them. I don't really know a lot of the raevans anymore. I don't want to get stuck somewhere. What if they lock me up in the lab? In a tube or something because I'm breaking things and my temper is a little off? I-I'm scared of that. I'm trying to be good but things are making me angry...just little things too. What if I hurt someone if I try and let it all out?
Cesc: *suddenly remembers the jungle, when Reks lost his mind and came out of the water -- or when he grabbed him and hauled him along through the trees, dropping him when he became dead weight* *shakes his head forcefully* Iorek, I know you're frightened. It is frightening. But it gets worse if you keep it in, I'm sure of it.
Reks: It gets worse if I let it out! If I can't control it it will do something else. Like I said, I'm only breaking toys and ripping up books. It's just my stuff and I can always buy new...special...limited edition...collector..editions...ugh. I haven't hurt anyone like I did with you. I-I'm just worried...but...maybe it wasn't a good idea to bring it up. Can you just forget it? Not tell anyone. Especially not Shep. *he asked as he grabbed a hold of Cesc's arm, pulling him into his side and glaring down at him. He looked very stern but worried all at the same time* Please.
Cesc: *the concern on his face strengthens, but there is a resoluteness in his eyes* *quietly* I cannot forget it, no -- but I promise I won't tell anyone else. Even Shepard. *isn't sure at ALL what to say to help at this point*
Reks: *sighs and releases Cesc, not realizing how tightly he was gripping the stag's arm* T-Thanks. I just...I can handle it. I'm finding some ways. It's just something new I'm not used to yet but it's part of me so I must know something about it, right? Just don't know exactly what. *smiles sheepishly* It'll be okay.
Cesc: *doesn't wince, although his arm is sore now, and smiles instead* I'm sure we can find a way past it, Iorek... You're strong, you always have been.
Reks: I am strong. You're right. It'll be easy. It's already getting better I think. Thanks, Cesc for your encouragement. It'll be okay for sure.
Cesc: *is worried, but says nothing of it, trying to be encouraging -- and wondering how he can keep tabs on how Reks is doing* Please, Iorek -- any time you want to talk, I am always available.
Reks: Thanks Cesc. *he ruffles his hair again* I'll be fine though. But thanks. If I ever need it I'll come to you.
Cesc: Any time. *smiles, still uneasy inside* Let me know how you're doing with it.
Reks: I will. I think I'm getting a lot of it out with some training. I've flattened a few of the rocks now! *he clenches a fist* That is a pretty nice plus.
Cesc: *laughs* Well, I’m glad to hear that.

Oh My Darling Every time Cruz thought he made progress in how to approach Iorek, he recoiled. It had been days since he spoke to Anita about his misgivings, however indirectly. She still asked now and then if things are alright thanks to his weak ruse but the croc continued to assure her he was alright. After all, it was the sort of thing that happened a lot in TV and movies – he was just asking out of curiosity for the story.
Lies.
He didn't like lying like this but when put on the spot it seemed like the only thing to do.
Cruz kept his phone close at all times. If ever there was a break where he was alone in the apartment, out walking Tango, or out on the balcony for some fresh air, his contact list was open and he lingered over Iorek's name. He couldn't call. In the bath, he would practice things to say and yet, no matter how many times he recited, everything sounded wrong. His voice shook and he had to stop.
They couldn't talk about this over the phone. It wouldn't be right. So, Cruz resolved, they needed to do this face to face. All that left was contacting Iorek, somehow, when any time his name came up on the call list it sent his heart into overdrive.
From: Cruz hello? Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:07PM
Cruz immediately set the phone on his bed. Heart in his throat, he stared at it with a conflicted sense of dread and longing. How could he want Iorek to answer so badly but be terrified of that exact same thing in the same moment? Each passing second made his core feel like it wanted to fold in on itself, like his rune wanted to rise up and hide inside his chest but the very notion felt sick. He covered his face with both hands and exhaled slowly – in, out.
The little jingle for received texts sent the phone vibrating happily and Cruz practically slammed into the headboard of his bed. He whined and rubbed the back of his head. With one eye, he peeked at the phone just as its front screen went dark.
Now that he had a response, he was too scared to look. It took several moments that felt devastatingly long for him to move at all. Did liquid cement spill on him like in the cartoons? One hand crawled across the comforter to the cell and dragged it closer to him, more like an obedient little animal than a part of himself he commanded.
From: Reks Hey Cruz! :D How are ya? Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:08PM
From all the build up, Cruz practically felt his bottom give out. While his rune first felt like it was trying to push him away, now he was struck with the curious sensation of his entire being wanting to drop out from beneath his ribbon and escape.
Iorek had absolutely no idea what this was about. The gargoyle was happy to hear from him. How could he approach this without ruining his friend's optimism?
From: Cruz hi! doing ok. how are you? Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:10PM
Cruz hated beating around the bush. He wished very badly to get to the point and not drag this out any further but every time he tried to steer his next message that way, he was quick to delete it.
From: Reks I’m alright! Better now that we’re talking! :) How’s your day? What are you up to? Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:14PM
From: Cruz good! not up to much. lots of cleaning this month. was wondering... when are you free? Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:19PM
Another lie. He wasn't good at all. The opposite, in fact.
It felt awful to hold a conversation like this, so casual and unassuming. Lines of thought that would be given on any other day about any other topic.
Each text was arduous for the croc to type. His thumb moved slowly across the keypad like a weight was tied to it. Worse yet, the time between replies allowed his heart and mind to race. Cruz built himself up again, only to come crashing down with his friend's next kind and oblivious response.
From: Iorek oh boy! What are you guys cleaning up? And sure! I’m free whenever for you! 8D Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:20PM
The hairs on the back of Cruz's neck immediately stood on end. He felt prickly all over – the unpleasant weight returned.
No, no, no, he couldn't do this yet. Cruz had all the time in the world but not for this, not so soon. Of course, the sooner this got done the better, he knew that – but it was just a vague happening then with no clear place or time. No, he couldn't be the one to decide this. It put too much responsibility on him. He owed at least a little bit of control to Iorek when he had absolutely no idea what was to come.
From: Cruz moving furnachure. throing stuff out. put all my pressents in drawers and made my room pretty. not sure when we can hang out next? Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:25PM
From: Iorek That sounds fun, I guess? Get it all done or do you need any help? Hmm…isn’t there a party coming up? The lab is putting it on? We could meet up there? I hear it’s going to be really pretty! Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:27PM
”Party...” he mumbled.
Was there? He honestly couldn't recall. Anita was usually on top of Lab events, it was entirely possible she mentioned it to him and he was too busy drowning in his own thoughts to listen.
Truth be told, a party didn't strike Cruz as the best place for this sort of thing. At the same time, maybe the atmosphere would make things easier. Being around others was definitely soothing for the croc, perhaps it was the same for the gargoyle. He hoped they could even slide into whatever fun the party itself offered, once this was all said and done.
From: Cruz its all done. nita and nerva thru out alot more stuf then me. Received: 2:29PM
Crap. His hands were shaking so much, he sent the text early.
From: Cruz (oops!!!) oh?? have to check when. yuo want to go? Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:33PM
From: Iorek Well good you got to keep lots of stuff? 8D I have a hard time throwing my stuff away too. And yeah! I’d love to go with you! Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:35PM
Something inside him suddenly ran cold. Up until then, the casual banter and dodging the issue was frustrating and stressful. It was hard to keep up with but Cruz was able to push on through sheer will power. Iorek's clear excitement made him feel sick.
This wasn't going right at all. His friend was happy to hear from him, Iorek wanted to see him and have a nice time but this wasn't a nice meeting at all. They had to talk, they needed to get things settled between them, but Anita's warning that it would hurt no matter what kept pounding in his ears.
No. That was the clumsy human interpretation, he reminded himself. He and Iorek were friends, good friends, and they should be able to talk about things like this without things going bad. This would work out. It had to.
From: Cruz ya kept lots! you're presents ar on my dreser. mr rock is happy. his name is cupid. will check with nita bout lab party. wud be nice. Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:38PM
From: Iorek Haha! What a great name. I’m glad to hear you two are getting along well! :-) And definitely! I’ll see if I can find the invite and I can send it to you if she doesn’t know. Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:40PM
Despite every reassurance he gave himself, Cruz couldn't stop shaking. He wanted this to be over. The emotional whiplash was exhausting.
From: Cruz yes hes nice and smily. thank yuo. hopfally sea yu soon. Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:44PM
From: Iorek Perfect! He’s a very happy stone. Glad I didn’t eat him! And yeah! Definirely! I really hope I can see you soon. I miss you. Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:45PM
A whimper drifted weakly from Cruz's throat.
Never before had he felt anything like this; dull ache all across his body, his heart refusing to beat calmly, thoughts racing and tangling with each other, trembling hands. His chest felt uncomfortably tight.
His heart hurt.
From: Cruz mis you too Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:49PM
The next response was written in slow motion. Such a short one but it felt like it took the longest. For a few minutes, Cruz wondered if that was enough – if that was an alright place to end it. Time ticked by without a response. Cruz's thumb drifted lazily across buttons. Thoughtlessly, he wrote another message.
From: Cruz <3 Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:52PM
Muscle memory acted faster than his brain. Before he could stop it, his phone confirmed the message was sent and all of Cruz's nerves fired at the same time.
”No,” he wailed, ”No, no, no, no. Come back. Come back.” Cruz rushed through the phone's text options and folders as fast as he could. There was nothing he could find to stop the message but, in a last ditch effort, he deleted it from the sent folder.
Maybe Iorek hadn't seen it yet. Maybe that was enough--
From: Iorek :-D <3<3 Received: Tue Jun 16, 2:52PM
--it wasn't.
With surprisingly calm motions, Cruz set the phone aside onto the nightstand. He turned over to rest his chest on the bed and gently buried his face into the pillow. Cruz's cry was muffled enough to not be noticed by the women in the apartment but he could hear Tango scratching at the door when he finally stopped to breathe.
