Ll sound in Castillian spanish is Gl in Italian. For example: Famiglia (family)

Okay, I am sort of confused. In Spanish, the Ll sound makes an equivalent sound almost to the English " Y " So is Famiglia pronounced like fami-yi-ah?

So to the ears of a Spanish speaker, it sounds like Famillia?

Uh no.
Ll in Castillian is the "lli" sound in the English word million. (Or at least that's what my old phrase book's pronounciation was).

I thought Castillian Spanish had the same pronunciation rules for Latin American Spanish, but they have a weird sounding accent with their tongue, like they stick that 'th' sound in there XD

Basically except pronouncing the "c" and "z" before an "i", "e" or "o" as the "th" sound and having the ll sound become "lli" in Million. Other than that it's the same.

Eh, I thought you explained well... maybe... I dunno. I just wanted a concrete decision... so I used my dictionary.

Hi there!

I haven't started learning Italian yet, but since I'm going to Sicily next year I'm planning to start learning.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some specific words. I'm lactose intolerant, and obviously don't want to get ill while I'm away. I want to get some lactase tablets, but if I can't I'll need to be watching what I'm eating. Can anyone give me the Italian for 'lactose' (if it's different.) I'm guessing the Italian for different dairy products will be easy to find, but that's probably a bit too obscure to find in a text book.

(Knowing the Italian for 'whey powder' would be good too, but that's not so important.)

I don't have a dictionary with me, but I know that milk in Italian is 'latte.' But I don't know about lactose or whey powder. I don't have any food allergies, so it isn't exactly something I've needed to worry about.

what part of sicily? the sicilian dialects are incredibly difficult to understand if only speak mainstream italian, so u'll wanna try to research common phrases in sicilian, just to be sure. if your going to a farely urban area, u might be ok with just mainstream italian

a few things:
sto facendo, there is no such word as facciando (there is faccia, but that means "face")
also, u can either use "ma" or "però", not both, they both mean "but," however, "ma" is more common depending on where u go
anyways....
"voi" is italian for "you (plural)"
"loro" is italian for "they/them"

Hello !
I'm currently learning French right now, but after I become pretty decent in that language, I'm going to begin learning Italian. (:
I think that Italian is just an amazingly beautiful language.

Let's Show Them...

The italian word for MILK is LATTE, and the italian word for LACTOSE is LATTOSIO =D

If anyone that's studying italian wants to talk a bit, I'm italian and I teach literature and grammar to 10/12 years old children, so I can help!

Sorry about bringing this thread back to life...
I just wanted to say I'm Italian too, and like the other people here I'd be happy to help learners with the language/culture.

I really hope there's still someone interested though! crying
