Dear Journal,
Things have been a bit crazy here lately. Riley breaking her arm really put a wrench into our plans. Not that it is really important, though. I'm just glad she's alright. It was a clean break, according to the doctor. And I have to admit I saw this event coming. With all the trouble she gets into it was only a matter of time she hurt herself, especially with those bones of her's.
Anyway, I canceled our family trip since she wouldn't be able to ride most of the attractions anyway. She'd try, I know, but for safety reasons they wouldn't let her on and neither would I. And dragging her to parks where she couldn't do anything but eat ice cream and sit around...well, that wouldn't appeal much to her and it'd certainly eat a pointless hole in my wallet.
Keeping her occupied is much harder then it is to cancel reservations. Most of the things she wants to do is completely out of the question, since she'd probably bump her arm around and make it worse. I feel bad for her, fore I know she hates it but there is little I can do. I won’t risk her harming her arm more then she already has.
Luckily she has some friends to play with, especially this one boy named Iggy. They seem very close. He even came to the hospital with us. She talks about him a lot…as she does about the other children, of course. But it seems she and this Iggy have fallen into step as best friends. She could do worse, he’s a sweet boy and obviously loyal.
Mikael and Runeh also help out a bit, when it suits them. Just the other day they challenged her to a ping-pong tournament. That kept her very busy, wore her out, and gave her a smile. Even if she did loose the entire thing. Where Runeh picks up these random skills I'll never know.
Surprisingly, though, she is to get the cast off tomorrow. The doctor said he couldn't believe how fast she has healed. Kai says it might be her bird DNA coming into play. Whatever the reason, I'm glad. I'm not sure how much more she could have been cooped up without something worse happening. We'll have to keep an eye on her afterwards, but I think things are starting to turn around.
Well, I need to head off and arrange that doctor's appointment.
-Vic

Everyone grows up. This was something all of them knew and accepted. Why, then, had Riley's maturity, if only physical, crept up on them so easily? Perhaps it was because she did not grow like a normal child. More likely, though they would never admit it, the fact that they're baby sister was one step closer to adulthood was hard to swallow. Denial must have been present for quite some time, for the realization, when finally made, was startling.
It started one saturday morning (morning being 11am or so). Riley had tumbled out of bed, all signs of her stone deep sleep gone. She immediately advanced upon her favorite room in the entire apartment; the kitchen. She toasted a bagle, grabbed a banana, and poured herself a bowl of Frosted Flakes before settling herself down with a muffled "thump" at the small dining table for two.
It was then that Mikael, who had been discussing something with Victor, exclaimed obnoxciously, "Holy s**t! When'd you get a rack, Ri?"
And that was the end of ignorant bliss, for it Mikael noticed then no one could pretend they hadn't either. The problem was, in a family of 6, she was the only girl. Explaining her female changes was not a task any of her brothers favored. So, being a democracy of sorts, they picked on poor Kai and it was decided that, being a medic, he was the most qualified for theh position.
And that was how he found himself in the undergarment section of a large department store trying to brush off the oppressive stares of employee and shopper alike. And Riley, who was completely oblivious and disinterested, wasn't much help either.
Blinking bleerily at the racks upon racks of underwear he felt the pit of his stomach drop out. He was a medic, sure, but that didn't mean he had any clue how this was supposed to work.
"Come on, Riley," he motioned with an uncertain smile, wandering right into the heart of the stands in hopes that something would just jump out at him. But it didn't.
"What are we doing again?" Riley drawled impatiently. Shopping was far from being her favorite pass-time.
"I told you, we're getting you proper...support," he replied reluctantly, keeping his voice far lower then theirs, which was normally rather loud to begin with. Taking a bra at random from the racks he looked at it with utter discomfort and perplexity. How in the world did he know what size...?
"Take off your sweatshirt," he told her tentatively. He had forced her to put it on before to hide the fact that she was...well, now having maturing female body parts that weren't being covered what so ever apart from loose fabric.
Riley rolled her eyes, "Whaaa? You're the one that made me put this s**t on..." She grumbled as she tugged her sleaves off and then slipped the garment over her head. She wore a shirt, of course, but now it was far more obvious of her "development".
Feeling absolutely rediculous Kai brought the bra over to her and held the two cups up over her chest. The undergarment was huge. Blanching, he looked at the size and felt his face redden a little to realize it was a size D. That was definately not what his younger sister would be.
"Ah...um...no good!" He laughed nervously, unable to remain relaxed in this situation. He kept peering over his shoulder, fearing the disaproving public was staring at him in disapproval. Shaking his head, he went back to the rack, this time actually looking at the sizes and other traits of the bras themselves, though the entire time he kept telling himself mentally that men just weren't meant to know this much about bras in the first place. He was overwelmed. Since when were there more sizes then A, B, C, and D? In between sizes? Underwires? Sports bras, lace bras...he felt as if his mind was dying a little in his skull.
At his witt's end the began to just take random brands and sizes, pushing them into Riley's arms, despite her loud and surprised protests, "Wha? Kai! What the hell-"
Grabbing her arm he hurriedly pushed her towards the dressing rooms, right past the lady stationed to monitor them. They managed to get into the stall and nearly shutt he door before the employee got right in the stall frame, looking cross. She was a burly woman who's dress looked too tight for her extreme lack of figure.
"What are you doing? This is a ladies' dressing room," she huffed, eyeing him as if he had been caught stealing babies.
"Ahh, I know, I'm so sorry, but you see-"
"Get out! Come on now."
"No but-"
"Out!"
He complied sheepishly, planting himself on a bench just outside. He sat there, staring at his hands to avoid looking at the stern woman who was surely watching him from behind to keep him from doing anything funny. After a moment he felt a bit relieved...he hadn't looked forward to helping Riley find what she needed. So he waited contentedly for 20 minutes before Riley emerged.
With no signs of any changes in her bossom.
"R-Riley!" He sputtered in objection, feeling all this happy feelings fly out the window.
Riley looked at him blankly, her expression bored and restless, "What? None of them fit." Which meant she either hadn't put them on right or hadn't even bothered to try.
"Riley, you have to find one that does," he sputtered.
"Why?" she wrinkled her nose in irritation, "They're ******** uncomfortable, I don't see the point."
"Ugh!" Exasperated and flustered he took her arm and proceeded to drag her back into the changing room stalls.
"Sir! I told you not to go in there!" Barked the woman and he heard over his shoulder the blip of a radio and the murmur of, "I'll be needing security to remove a roudy customer."
He stopped to look at the woman, torn between getting this process over with and ensuring that he was put in hand-cuffs. "I have to be in there with her," he emplored, "She doesn't know how-"
"Sir, you can not honestly think I'll believe that, even if she doesn't know how, she doesn't have a female relative to help her," the woman growled.
It was then that a middle aged man, half bald and looking as if his security uniform were a hand-me-down, sauntered over grabbing Kai with a surprisingly strong grip. It caused him to stumble and bite his tongue, leaving him momentarily speachless as the guard began to forcibly lead him away.
Desperate, he called out despite the small throb of pain, "I'm serious, please!" But he could get nothing else out before he was put outside. Defeated he sat along the curb, still imaginging Riley's laughter as he was thrown out for, in her mind, no apparent reason.
"What a mess," he bleated resting his chin in his hands. Tilting his head slightly he sighed, "At least I wasn't arrested though..." Unable to fetch his younger sibling from the store he waited gloomily for her appearance. It took longer then he expected, but when she arrived he was met by a pleasant surprise.
She looked rather presentable.
He stood, a bit dumbfounded, but unimaginably elated. Who knew something so simple could make him so happy! But then, he had been put through a torture of sorts, so it wasn't surprise, "Riley! How-"
"That lady made me try on stuff," she replied grouchily, "I still don't see what the big deal is."
Kai laughed, putting an affectionate arm around her shoulders and giving her a small sideways hug, "That doesn't matter." And despite her indignant look he managed to head back to the car with a cheerful smile on his face.

[Private AIM RP: Chang & Ta'rish'e Families]
"How did I get talked into this...?"
"You sure have been complaining a lot ever since I brought Eden home. Could it be that you're curious and don't want to admit it?" Grinned a short young woman to one that looked exactly like her in everything but hair style and the narrowed nature of her eyes, versus the other's more friendly expression.
"I have not..." The girl muttered back, glowering to one side in silence afterwards. Why -was- she feeling so defensive and tense since that cabbage came home? Her worry for Tony's treatment and humanizing of that thing? Or something else?
Tony just sighed, looking ahead as they found a picnic table to rest at in a park, not far from a basketball court. ((<3 ;D Riley and Toh = Love sports/basketball!)) "Right..."
"Come on! Get the ball Mikael!"
"Just get it yourself."
"Pssh, you're just trying to delay your a** whopping!" Shot the adolecent, demonstrating that her maturity levels did not nesessarily match her age. The "attack" was directed towards one of her elder brothers who still stood next to the car. The other of her two brothers, Runeh and Victor, had already left to join her where she stood on the sidewalk. That left him as the last man out and therefore, the one in charge of getting the equipment.
"It's going to be two against one, why should I be worried?" Mikael snorted, pushing the trunk open.
"What, you say'n Vic's as useful as a brick wall?" Riley scoffed.
"Naah, I'm saying you aren't even worth putting a number to."
Tony just giggled a bit, amused by the family banter going on a few yards away, but Meilin was more than happy to ignore the group gathering for their game, especially in light of the fact that Tony was back to fussing over the cabbage again. Meilin exhaled in exasperation and smacked her forehead.
["Tony, not with the headphones in public, please? People are going to think you're crazy!"] She hissed softly, watching the girl set up her MP3 player.
"For someone as indifferent as you are, you sure worry a lot about what other people are going to think about me and our cabbage."
"That's because I'm clearly the only one between the two of us that has no interest in going to the psych ward!" Another soft protest.
Tony rolled her eyes, fixing her twin with a flat, unimpressed look.
"Meilin, take a -good- look around you, hm? Have you noticed the abundance of kitsune-hybrids and talking animals? Now, come on, who is REALLY going to accuse me of being crazy?"
"I'm going to kick your f**k'n a** Mikael! Now throw the ball!"
"You want it? Well then...catch!" The younger pelted the ball at his little sister, not even bothering to aim, for he didn't expect her, or perhaps want her, to catch it. It whizzed past her leg, hitting the ground and bouncing a few yards before it rolled the rest of its way to stop near the table occupied by the two young woman.
"You're aim is about as good as your brain is big!" Riley huffed before racing off to fetch what he had thrown. She skidded to a halt in front of it, picking it up in two hands before noticing the two that...well, they might have disturbed. But instead of apologizing, or anything similar to it, she murmured, "I know it's going to be a kid and all, but I'm I don't think it can hear that music or anything."
"Riley, be polite," Victor scolded lightly, coming to stand beside the girl who had too come from a vegetable such as that.
"Pah, I'm just saying! I certainly don't remember hearing anything when I was a plant or whatever," She blew a breath of air at her eldest brother and shrugged her shoulders.
Between the two it was Tony who seemed the most blankly surprised about the "interruption". She blinked intelligently back at the sparrow-girl as well as what was said, then shot a smug smirk in her twin's direction. Meilin looked as pale as a sheet and about twice as ready to faint.
"See~, I -told- you I wasn't crazy."
She ignored the sharp glare she got in return, as discreet as Meilin tried to be about it. The girl had snapped back out of her dazed horror and looked to the two with her usual stoic expression.
"Please tell me you're joking..."
"Ignore my sister, she's normally at least a LITTLE polite... I think she traded her manners in for a stick today." She muttered the last part sharply as she gave Meilin a "BE NICE." look. "Anyway... I'd imagine probably not, can you remember other things from when you were this age? I don't mean to be rude, but, this is all very new--"
"--And very strange." Meilin ground out through almost clenched teeth, folding her arms. She received an elbow from Tony as a reward.
"--for us. We're... we're not from here." She added sheepishly. "Ah! I'm Tony, this is Meilin, sorry!"
"Nah, what would I have to remember 'sides being watered? Or...whatever," Riley brushed the question off, obviously not seeing the relevance of...well, why they'd want to know anyway. But she continued, if only to perhaps...clear the matter up for her own sake, since she had no idea why they were asking such things, "But I don't really remember much before Vic and all my brothers anyway so."
"Ah, forgive me for interrupting, but I would assume it's the same as with a young child; babies don't tend to remember much earlier then one or so years of age, I believe?" Victor answered, more keen to Meilin and Tony's situation. He gave a friendly smile, "A pleasure, Miss Meilin and Tony, I am Victor and-"
"The name's Riley!" she cut in with a wide, toothy smile.
"Hey, what's the hold up?" Mikael came to job over and see why it was taking so long to get a stupid ball while Runeh followed behind with a vague curiosity.
Tony just smiled at both of them, nodding gratefully for the answers. She had the same opinion as Victor had just stated, but seeing as she had no experience with... Cabbage babies before, well, she wanted to remain open minded about it rather than jump to false conclusions. It was actually rather ironic, when she first saw the shop the first thing she thought of was the old childhood toy line they had when her mother was a girl. The woman used to talk about it every now and again when random bouts of nostalgia hit, more when the twins and their brother were younger though.
"Nice to meet you both, Victor and Riley." She smiled a little more, turning it into something of a grin. And oh, but she was itching to ask Riley more questions, but she kind of sensed that the girl would either be disinterested or possibly annoyed by a third degree from a stranger, not to mention it -would- be completely rude.
She offered a free hand to shake.
Meilin gave a short nod, seemingly completely over her jarring shock from seconds before. So that's really how it was here? ..... Very strange... but oddly fascinating as well... Maybe she'd dare admit to being curious, if Tony would ever let her hear the end of it.
"Ohhh, hello there ladies-ooof!" Mikael grunted as Riley promptly shoved the basketball into his stomach. Hands free, she pointed a finger at his nose, "You and Runeh get on the court! We've got a game to play!" When Mikael looked clearly more interested in the strangers then in their game she folded her arms. "To think, I have a chicken for a brother!" she spat.
"Gah, we'll shut you up in a second, you just see!" Mikael scoffed with an equal measure of bad temper, turning and dragging Runeh off to the court.
Since the girl had forgotten Tony's gesture, Victor stood in. He took it and gave a firm and gentle shake, "The pleasure is ours."
Then Riley rounded back, apparently not completely oblivious to their companions. "So, either of you two play basketball?" She grinned, placing her hands on her hips. A couple of girls kicking the Twins' asses...that would be a sight!
Tony gave Victor another polite smile, and Meilin jerked her thumb at the girl.
"Her."
"I knew there was something I liked about you right away, Riley." Tony grinned jokingly.
"Sweet!" Riley jerked her hand hand down in a motion of triumph. Her feathered ears lifted, quivering a little in anticipation as she motioned expectantly at Tony, "Come on! Lets show 'em what girls can do, hu?" She turned and bounded off towards the court, obviously expecting the older woman to follow.
Meilin watched with just the slightest shake of her head as Tony grinned again, looked at Victor with quick question, then jumped up and followed the younger girl, calling back for Lin to "keep an eye on Eden(!)".
"....."
Well....... this was....
"Has she been with you long...?" She asked after finally finding a point of possible conversation, feeling strongly as if she should say SOMEthing.
"Alright, ladies and gentlemen, excluding Mikael, we'll play two on two using half the court. You must go back to the half court line when the ball changes sides, sound fair?" Runeh smiled, ignoring the dirty look his twin shot him.
"Whatever, just play the game, Runeh, and get ready for me an' Tony to give you a beating!" Riley rolled her eyes.
While Victor felt no awkwardness in the situation, he sensed it might not be the same for the other woman so he remained standing and responded fluidly to her conversation starter, "Not as young as you would think, I'm sure. Compared to say, a normal child, she hasn't been with us long. Those from the lab grow faster then a normal child."
