After returning home with nothing but disappointment on his mind, Ainsley quickly went and grabbed his journal, quill, and ink...

I forgot that dragons could fly. Exactly how stupid can I get!? ...I'll probably try again later, but at some point I know I'll beat one of these things again. Just need
      some more practice.

It had been days since the encounter, but once Ainsley was well enough to actually move without being in pain, the boy pulled out his journal and began to write...

I desperately need to get stronger. These Ysali dragon keep beating me, and Quan keeps having to rescue me. If I can't even beat these things, how can I even
think about going against any of the other dragons!? ...I'm just so weak, and it's really frustrating. Quan says patience, but I'm getting sick and tired of having my
butt handed to me every single time!

It'd been a long day, but after getting his injuries tended to and a good dinner into his stomach, Ainsley felt well enough to recount his day...

Hah! All those Bognotti... It felt really good to finally be able to one-up those things fair and square. Sure, they got a few good bites into me, but I got out of there
alive on my own. I feel a good bit stronger too. A bit more, and I'll be ready to face those dragons again.

Ayr isn't exactly a friendly place, but I'm glad I was attacked by birds rather than a dragon. I can't imagine having to deal with a dragon in my state, small and still
working to get stronger. I found an egg for the trouble though. Hopefully Quan will let me keep it.

Quan had told him he was ready, but Ainsley himself wasn't too sure. He'd taken on his fair share of dragons and creatures and the like, trained his butt off within inches of his life multiple times, but even the idea of actually just meeting Aevah Avi was so mind boggling and nerve wracking, the 12-year-old couldn't even believe it. His mentor hadn't said much of anything to him since the previous night. Brief, soft-spoken encouragements just wasn't Quan's thing, but the older Orderite clapped him on the shoulder as he always did and gave a laugh that afternoon.

"She's definitely someone," Quan said, huffing his pipe a second after saying the statement. "Aevah Avi, bet you never thought you'd ever meet her in person, 'ey?" He gave another loud laugh, throwing Ainsley a bit off of his mindset. The boy cast an annoyed glance at his mentor; he knew the older man meant well, but... well, it wasn't doing much of anything to help him at that very moment. To think, all he actually had to do was deliver a couple of orbs..

The appointment was set no more than a few days ago by Ainsley's reckoning. He'd been doing his training as usual; his muscles were building up nicely despite his age, and he had a recent growth spurt so he was a good few inches taller than when he first met Quan two years prior. The old Orderite simply announced it over dinner, saying that it was time. Ainsley nearly had a fit, going on about deciding for himself when he was ready and all that, momentarily forgetting that he was, in fact, a student under Quan at the present. The green-eyed man could only laugh at his protege and chide him somewhat, but he didn't fault him for throwing a fit. Nearly throwing one.

"My mentor did the same to me," he said slowly while Ainsley calmed himself down. "He assured me that I was ready, and Aevah Avi seemed to agree once I met her and she gave her assessment. I trust that you trust me enough to make this decision for you, as I do believe you're more than ready, Ainsley."

It was rare for Quan to use his full name; normally he went by "boy" or "lad" or something similar, so although his expression was that of defiance, Ainsley gave a small nod and hurriedly finished his dinner. At least he had a few days to ready himself to meet her. And now, he thought, as his appointment time finally arrived, he felt he was as ready as he'd ever be. With a deep breath, the boy headed inside the Citadel and approached Aevah Avi, the Orderite's leader, who was standing at a distance and awaiting his arrival.

"G.. good afternoon," he said once he'd come to a stop some feet from her. Something about her just kept him from getting too much closer, and she seemed to be just fine with that. His voice was stiff and his nervousness was quite evident in his tone, which brought a smile to Aevah's face.

"Deep breaths," she said, her voice calm and serene, soothing almost, and Ainsley did as he was told. "Now, go on."

"I've come to deliver a um.. pair of orbs..." the boy said, quickly and rather clumsily pulling out a Firani and Gaili orb, the first two orbs he'd ever gotten his hands on. "Quan.. my mentor.. he said that I was ready to move on with my studies, so he made this appointment without telling me. I honestly don't feel that I--"

"Hush, young Ainsley," Aevah cut in, and the boy bit his tongue. "I am well aware of Quan's actions as he told me as such when he approached me some days ago, and I quite agree with him." She paused and bent down just enough to pick the two orbs up from from his palm. "You are, indeed, ready to move on with your studies, Ainsley. Do you believe me when I say that, or is there still a lingering doubt in you?"

Her words and question threw him off, and he wasn't quite sure what to say. In all honesty, he wasn't expecting her to agree with Quan. As far as Ainsley was concerned, he needed to do a lot more before he could be ready to move on with his studies, but..

"I don't think that doubt will ever go away," the boy began slowly, choosing his words with care. "A student will always have doubts; I think that's partially why they are still a student. That said.. I do believe you, and I believe I owe my mentor an apology as well..."

His words brought a smile to Aevah's lips, and she gently rested her hand on the young Orderite's shoulder. "Wise words for someone so young," she chuckled. "Not dissimilar to your mentor when he was your age. Tell Quan that I have deemed you ready to further your studies. I look forward to seeing you again, Ainsley."

And with that, the young Orderite was dismissed. He exited the Citadel and took a seat quietly beside Quan, who was huffing his pipe thoughtfully. It was some minutes before either of them said anything; it was almost like an unsaid understanding between mentor and student. As the older Orderite stood, however, he said with a light chuckle, "Told you."
