We weren't able to save him
Word Count: 883

The ambulance had rushed her and her father to the hospital. Mr. Hernandez had fortunately dialed 9-1-1 after the incident. It was an incident which Yvette did not understand in the slightest. She was supposed to be having a normal day. Her daddy was supposed to go to work, and then she was supposed to go back to her room and study her assignment for Mr. Gordon's class. Mommy was supposed to come home and make dinner.

Daddy wasn't supposed to get attacked by a monster. Even though the medics had told her to sit on the sidelines while they tended to her father, she managed to sneak her hand up along his, her tiny hand only obscuring a small section of the man's large hands.

Everything that had happened once they got to the hospital was a blur. Her father was rushed off, she was shuffled into the waiting room, and eventually she had fallen asleep on one of those uncomfortable plastic chairs.

____________

When she woke up, it was to the gentle nudging of a doctor. At least, he looked like a doctor. A young doctor with glasses, brown hair that was slicked back, and a long white coat. He was carrying a clipboard, with most likely the information on her father's arrival to the hospital. "Come with me..." he said in a well practiced voice.

Groggily, the girl stood herself up and walked next to him. Her deep purple eyes attempted to locate a name badge or something, but she couldn't find any. It wasn't exactly like she would be talking much. Yvette had always been a quiet girl.

The two walked in silence for a while until they were standing outside of a door. The man placed the clipboard on a nail hanging from the door, then gave his full attention to the girl. "You certainly don't talk a lot, child." The doctor laughed what seemed like a kind laugh before he began to explain the situation.

"You arrived here with Alan Weaver to the hospital this afternoon. He was severely injured and unconscious. I take it you are his daughter, since you look too young to be his wife." The man looked to the girl to see if his joke got any sort of reaction.

The girl seemed a bit too somber for her own good. She wasn't looking at him as he delivered all the information. Instead, her eyes were on the ground, as if they were too heavy to life any higher.

"You should stop looking so guilty," the doctor pointed out in a professional tone. "I mean, we all know you were the one who killed him."

For a moment, all the dark haired girl could hear was the sound of her heart beating harshly in her chest. Yet, she ventured to ask "
W-what did you say?"

The doctor turned to her with a smile. "Yes, we weren't able to save him. He's behind this door, dead. And it is your fault. He was bleeding profusely from bite marks. And to be rather frank, you didn't do a good job cleaning yourself up, child."

Yvette looked down over her school uniform, and found blood all over it, staining it in patchy splotches of dark red. Her fingers even had blood on them, crusty and dried up under her nails. Had she really done this? Her voice trembled in fear as she confessed "
I...I-i d-don't remember..."

This doctor seemed to have an answer for everything. He leaned down so the lenses in his glasses caught a certain glare which made it impossible to see his eyes. "Many killers suffer from temporary amnesia after they've committed the crime. I must confess, this is probably the most messy murder I've seen. You must have been thirsty for blood." Perhaps the most unsettling part about this scenario was the fact the nameless doctor was smiling the whole time.

Her eyes filled up with tears, the water flowing out heavily down her cheeks. In an almost desperate fashion, she tried to claw open the door. "
Please, let me see him!" she cried out in her tiny voice.

"You really are a quiet one. My job is to put you down for your crimes, child! Hopefully you will be just as quiet as you are right now." The man quickly pulled out a needle from his pocket and literally jabbed it into the girl's neck. She could feel a strange throbbing sensation in her neck. Probably the liquid inside of the needle pumping into her vein.

The last thing she heard was "...that's a good girl..."

____________

"...that's a good girl..."

The voice was familiar. As Yvette's indigo eyes fluttered open, she found something very comforting there to greet her. As her eyes adjusted and focused in, she saw the ever gentle features of her mother there to greet her.

The dark haired woman once more repeated "That's a good girl, wake up Yvette."

Even with such a comfort as her mother there, the girl's eyes couldn't help but fill up with tears. "
Mommy!" she whimpered out miserably as she wrapped her arms about her mommy's willowy shoulders.

The lady returned the hug, rubbing a hand along her daughter's back. All she could offer in comfort was one sentence. "Everything will be alright."

Welcome to the Work Force
Word Count: 1,153

This was just a formality.

Yvette Weaver was sitting in a chair in probably one of the most embarrassing shops in the mall, waiting to be introduced to Mrs. Ortiga. Her fingers clenched to the short, yet still professional-length skirt she was wearing as her anxieties began to build up about the whole ordeal.

She was just going to be terrible, and then she was going to screw up yet another aspect of her life. Mrs. Ortiga wasn't going to want Yvette on staff. The girl already could imagine the comments she'd hear back from her Mommy.

"Sorry Mrs. Weaver, but your daughter was much too quiet and wouldn't be much help to my business."

Why did her quiet voice always get her into trouble? While she sat there fretting over this whole scenario, somewhere in the back of her mind, she reminded herself that she was doing this for her family. She was doing this for Daddy and she was doing this for Mommy.

__________________________

It had been a pretty grim meeting of the Weaver family. The two dark-haired girls sat in chairs right next to the large man's hospital bed. Nobody had a smile. Daddy had looked angry, and Mommy had looked absolutely exhausted with a hint of sadness. Yvette knew that her own mouth wasn't curled in a smile, because her whole face felt too heavy for such a light expression.

The man in the bed cleared his throat before hitting them with the big news. "I managed to speak to my boss today. I am only going to be receiving half my pay while I am out on medical leave."

There was silence as the information processed for the mother and daughter pair. Both were able to come up to the same conclusions, but only the more mature of the pair stated what that meant. "We can't afford the house with such a cut in your pay."

The bearded man nodded. "At least my medical is covered so we don't have to worry about paying for all of this." He waved his hand at the general room around them. He then heaved a sigh before burying his face in his hands. There was eventually a muffled sound that came from behind the large hands that resembled something like "Are you sure you can't get overtime, Natasha?"

The lady looked to her husband, then down to her own lap. She wasn't a very talkative lady, but she offered "I already work as many hours as they will allow."

Everyone in her family worked so hard to keep what little they had. Yvette knew this, and in her chair, she was trembling, thinking of losing everything that she knew and loved. Sure, maybe she lived in a crappy part of town, and maybe her life wasn't a picture from a storybook. Yet, the thought of not having the bus stop she had grown up with right around the corner was tearing her up inside. What made the whole thing worse was that Yvette had done nothing to help out.

"You can still help out" said the voice in the back of the scared girl's mind. "Your Mommy and Daddy have worked so hard to make your life the best they could possibly manage. Maybe it is time you worked just as hard to make their lives the best you can possibly manage?"

In a tiny voice, Yvette spoke. Though her voice was small, there was some sort of shy determination to her tone. It wasn't how she usually spoke. Both of her parents knew this. Yet, in that tiny voice, she chimed in "
I will get a job."

Both of her parents looked to her, but Yvette's deep purple eyes didn't meet their glances. Her eyes were too firmly planted upon her thighs.

"Are you sure that is what you want? We can find another way, baby." The large man really did have a soft spot for his daughter, and even after confessing that they'd lose their house, he still sounded as if he didn't want the small girl worrying.

"
Yes... I'm sure..."

The lady's hand gently swept in and took a hold of the girl's. "Thank you, Yvette" was the first thing Mommy said. After that, the woman added "I know Mrs. Ortiga was actually looking to hire someone." Mrs. Ortiga was a customer from Mommy's work place. A long time customer who adored Mrs. Weaver. With a slight hand squeeze, the woman reassured "I know she'll hire you in an instant."

__________________________

The thing that managed to snap Yvette Weaver back into the present was a voice calling out her name. It was a friendly voice that had a sort of professionalism to it that it took years to gain. The girl glanced up in front of her and found a well manicured hand there waiting for a handshake.

"
Oh!" The girl quickly slid her hand forward to latch onto the other lady's hand. Her deep purple eyes drifted up higher and found an absolutely stunning woman in front of her. Obviously this was Mrs. Ortiga. She had one of those Hollywood tans, dark curly hair to go with her dark eyes, tasteful amounts of makeup, and plenty of jewelry to accessorize. She definitely dressed the part of a store owner.

"Oh my, you are even MORE ADORABLE than your mother!" Apparently all the professionalism went down the toilet, for soon enough this woman had practically yanked the girl into standing up so she could inspect her further. The woman had to be at least 6 foot tall, and with short little 5'2" Yvette in front of her, she seemed to be having fun treating the girl like a life-sized doll. The dark-haired girl's cheeks were already quite flushed, and with all the attention, her cheeks just continued to get darker.

"Oh my gosh, I could just eat you up, Yvette!" The woman seemed to almost twirl the short girl around, inspecting every aspect of her. "You have your mother's stature, but you definitely didn't inherit her bra size. What are you, a DDD?"

Not only was she now dizzy, but her cheeks were bright red. She managed to sputter out a simple "
Um... um..." but it really didn't answer the question.

Mrs. Ortiga planted two hands firmly on Yvette's shoulders before pulling the girl into a hug. "When your mother called and told me all about what had happened, I told her I wanted to help however I could! You are such a brave child!" Yvette was not kidding when she said that Mrs. Ortiga adored her mother.

"
Th-thank you, Mrs. Ortiga." Yvette's indigo eyes shyly peered up into the woman's.

"Oh, you are SO adorable!!!" the woman squealed as she released the girl. Her hand shot out again. With a large smile, the woman assured Yvette that she had the job with one simple phrase.

Special Sewing Project
Word Count: 935

There were only a couple days until she had to start working at Elizabeth's Secret. All of her free time was going to get sucked up by a busy work schedule. Yvette Weaver decided to spend those last couple days wisely. She had called Topher's mom, Eva, and explained the situation to her.

Obviously, Eva knew that Topher's birthday was coming up. May 7 was her baby boy's day of birth. Yet, the frequently timid girl had come up with a birthday present idea that would require much more effort than the usual gift. Sure, she could have gone and attempted to buy a gift card or something, but there were two problems with that. One, it was completely impersonal. And two, there was so much more she could do if she sewed the gift rather than bought a gift card. After all, the gift card would have been only about 10 dollars.

After a long talk and a few girlish giggles with Eva, everything had been settled. With her scant amount of money, Yvette went to purchase a few supplies, and then packed up her sewing equipment. The girl settled herself onto the ever familiar public bus and took a trip.

During the ride, a kindly old woman sat down next to Yvette, her wrinkled hands trembling softly. Her eyes squinted, attempting to focus on the items that the dark-haired girl was clutching onto before she eased a smile onto her face. "I used to sew for my granddaughter all the time," she started off, her voice sounding similar to a creaking door. Yvette nodded her head, but she didn't say a word, her brilliant purple eyes fixed on the woman's face.

The girl's silence didn't seem to bother her, and the woman continued to speak, as if just wanting to talk about the things she remembered. "I always made her cute little outfits. Little summer dresses." The woman let out a tired laugh before adding a little sigh. "My son's wife never let that child wear anything I sewed."

"
What? That's terrible!!"

Yvette's voice wasn't very loud, and the woman let out that tired laugh again. "Oh my, you are certainly a quiet one, dearie."

This didn't seem to discourage the girl, though Yvette's cheeks easily turned a nice rosy color. "
Why wouldn't she let your granddaughter wear what you made for her?"

The woman's trembling hands pinched along the edge of her skirt at the question. One more rusty chuckle, and the woman replied "Apparently my daughter-in-law did not think it was hip enough. I guess she just never learned to appreciate homemade gifts when she was growing up." The woman's lips curled into a smile at the girl, showing off that she was missing a few teeth. "It is good to see a child who learned the lesson well. I almost thought all young people had forgotten how to make things for themselves."

It probably seemed out of place, but the girl offered two words: "
I'm sorry..." There were a lot of things she was apologizing for, like the fact the daughter-in-law was a stinker, and the general observation about lazy "young people" as she phrased it.

The woman laughed, but it resembled something more like a cackle from a stereotypical Halloween witch. "Oh my, you have nothing to apologize for, dearie!"

The bus began to slow down, rolling to a stop. Yvette glanced up at the little glowing sign. "
Oh, this is my stop!" The girl stood herself up quickly, then attempted a smile to the old lady. "I've been getting told that a lot these days... thank you for talking with me! I hope we can see each other again." The woman lifted a trembling hand and simply waved it in Yvette's direction as she began to wander her way up towards the exit. It was always amazing what sorts of kind strangers a shy little girl could meet on the bus.

After exiting the bus, it took a bit of walking to get to Topher's home. This was only the second time she had visited, but it felt like the first visit with how big the place was. She wandered up to the door and rang the doorbell, arms clinging to her clunky old sewing machine. After talking with that old lady, it seemed to be even more of a treasure to her.

As always (or at least what Yvette could assume was "always"), Eva greeted her with the giddiness of a school girl. At least this time she didn't leave her standing at the door and immediately shuffled the girl inside, leading the way to a room for Yvette to work in. The dark-haired girl simply followed along, not able to really get a word in, but occasionally managing a simple nod. Once in the room, she began to set all of her equipment down. Eva continued to talk, explaining how her Bo was sleeping and wouldn't be able to catch Yvette in the act.

"I'll let you get to work, but please be careful with it!" was the last thing that Eva said before closing the door behind her, leaving the girl to settle in to work.

The girl sat down in the elegant wooden chair, then looked over her work area, her supplies, then finally upon it. If she worked hard enough without any breaks, she just might be able to get this done in one go.

It really is cute she mused before starting to fuss with the cloth she brought. This wasn't going to get done if she sat around. Time to work!
