They had left Grayson's house, gone to a hotel--a classy one, with black-suited bodyguards--to sit together, crowded onto a bed in one of the suite's three rooms until Voirrey fell asleep. Aysel carried him out, probably stayed with him, because it was just Elke and her Papa sitting on the bed, her head on his shoulder and his arms around her.
"You're safe now," he said, the French accent that came from twenty years of ambassadorial work in France familiar and comforting to the bluenette. Elke hugged him again, pressing her face against the stubble on his cheeks. Her Papa hadn't shaved that day; probably he'd come right from France. He looked so tired, she thought, tired enough he hadn't noticed the dye, or the new scar on her bicep. "Tomorrow we'll go shopping. We'll re-register you for Crystal Academy. Do you want to take taekwondo again? We'll give you your camera and laptop... your mother cleaned out your closet so we'll get your new clothes tomorrow." He paused, distracted. "Do you want new clothes," he asked.
She settled down on his knee again, legs crossed at the ankles like a proper lady, head on his shoulder like a daughter. "Mmmmmaybe," she said. "Will you and Maman go shopping with me? Can I bring Grayson?"
One critical green eye--Elke had her daddy's eyes, greenish and vibrant in that greenishlyness--settled on her face. "I think not," he said, "I think it will be you and your mother and me. The Graves doubtless have things to do, we'll get together with them for supper, how would that be?"
"It would be good, Papa," said Elke, "I wanna have... steak," she continued, snuggling up tighter to him, "And potatoes and carrots and--"
"All right," said Elke's papa. "Pipe down." For all the French accent, Elke's papa had never forgotten his Midwestern roots, just like he hadn't forgotten his time in the Marines. Elke's papa was one huge ball of middle-aged muscle. Elke's papa was scary strong. He picked up his daughter like another man might have picked up a plate of pancakes. "Doctors say you haven't been eating well. Par consequent, no steak for you yet."
Darn, Elke wanted to say, but she was too busy investigating a ball of fluff on Edmund's shoulder. Then: "Do I get carrots?"
"How about broth?"
More darn. No way, Elke wanted to say, she wanted food. "Okay," she said, "but I never want a strawberry poptart ever again."
Edmund would later reflect that once upon a time, Elke had adored strawberry poptarts. This, apparently, had changed. He would make a note of it.
"Elke," he said after a moment as they stood inside one of the other bedrooms in the suite, "We thought you were dead. We never would have stopped looking for you if we'd thought there was a chance you were alive." He turned flinty-eyed, green chips of ice instead of irises as he set her down on the bed and tucked her in.
"Are you gonna sue the hospital," asked Elke, feeling guilty. She really had been dead. The poor hospital hadn't done anything wrong, but to tell the truth kind of ruined the whole everything.
He shook his head. "No." And he kissed her on the forehead, hugged her tight. "My little girl," said Edmund.
That was as emotional as it got. Elke settled into her pillow--"Bonne nuit, papa"--and yawned. Her eyes closed; Edmund stood and turned off the lights, but left the door open. In the gray twilight, Elke smiled.
Everything was right in her world.
