At last, enough of her equipment had been repaired for her to attempt this procedure. She had cleared off her desk -- though she had only been living in the attic for a few days, she had somehow managed to cover it with an amazing collection of stuff -- lain a piece of paper down, set up the rings, and popped open the lacquered cylinder that held the elemental orbs, setting them on the ring in the correct order -- Wood to Fire to Earth to Heaven to Water to Wood to Fire, several winding loops -- so that she could sustain the energy, collected in her charging-devices over the past few idle weeks, she was about to pour into the field.

Everything was ready, and her mind gently sweeping over and prodding each tool did not indicate to her that anything was wrong. And yet, there she was, hesitating. Even though she knew everything was in place, even with the Celestial Oracle's assurance... ... ... well, maybe that last item was not so reassuring and assurance.

Indeed, if everything was right and she still failed, then that would mean that something was wrong on a deeper level, a level that Rika's knowledge and insight and the Oracle's mysticism could not penetrate... and then what would they do?

... Well, they would deal with that when it happened, she supposed, and reached for the brush with inscriptions and markings all along its length, made up of rotating disks rather than a single wooden shaft, so heavily enchanted Rika could feel it even without actively searching for it with her abilities.

Placing one of the canisters she had prepared inside the circle, she touched the tip of the brush lightly to the paper.

She then gently released the brush; it held itself in midair, tip just above the paper, as it had been designed to do. She sat and stared at it for what seemed like ages -- that's what they forgot to buy at GAEA, a clock for her room -- and she was just debating going downstairs to use the bathroom and maybe steal something from the refrigerator when the brush abruptly twitched.

... The flutter of excitement in her chest died down as she read the paper, and with a sigh of slight annoyance, she removed the brush from the elemental circle, twisted a few of its gears, changed the paper and tried again:

She lifted up the brush, then moved it slightly to the right, and waited.

?

Leaning forward eagerly at the legible symbol, Rika replied,

Clear

Ri. Who?

Bai

... Rika paused, her teeth brushing her lip slightly, then slowly reached for the brush again.

All Well. Setsu, Hitsu, Dragon, Kou, etc. Device Fine.

Kiku?

Rika raised an eyebrow.

Kiku?

Yuu Shou Child, Two Want? Find?

... This was strange. Rika didn't remember Souken giving the Scholars any orders in particular -- she just joined the chorus of everyone at Court, begging them to decipher this mystery. She scrunched up her face -- Yuushou's child... Souken... Rika couldn't remember anyone named "Kiku," but then she didn't enjoy spying on other nobles' lives like some people.

Forget. Look.

She paused.

Well?

Yes. Hitsu?

Rika sighed in annoyance; she'd already told her he was fine, and repeating questions wasted power and paper.

Well.

She thought a moment... then tentatively added,

Forgive?

There was a very long pause, long enough that Rika leaned forward to peer at the brush, even tap it a few times, and psychically prod at the canister and the orbs to ensure that they were still working. But then, it slowly began to move again:

Rika sucked in her breath, paused a moment, then reached for the brush.

Able?

Easy

Difficult Uncomfortable

Fine

She nibbled her lip.

Matsu?

A longer pause this time, but:

Safe

Rika leaned back in her chair with a great sigh, taking off her monocle to rub her face. She had no more objections to raise, though, and so she leaned forward again, resigned.

Bring?

Spare, Magic, Energy, etc. Calibrate, Reference.

She could almost hear the other scholar chuckle as the reply came.
