Funny funny stuff. I remember playing that once.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Part 4 coming soon.

As I was playing Journey to Silius yesterday, I noticed that it has an awesome soundtrack. One stage that caught my ear was stage 4. That is the subject of today's edition of Mephisto's Music Mania!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The stage 4 theme music reminds me of something from Rad Racer or Bad Dudes. It's got a rockin' melody with an awesome rhythm section of 8-bit greatness that you just can't help but bang your head to. I could definitely see a metal version of this being made:

If anyone finds an awesome remix to this music, please share it with the rest of us.

Now we come to another episode of...

Behind the Controller!

Today I talk to fellow Cultie and EB fan, Zephyrkitty! Let's give her a hand!

"So, tell us, my friend, what if your life like away from the controller?

Zephyrkitty
I love reading. I have a few lists of books that I want to get through sometime in my life, and I've got a stack of 10-15 books that I'm trying to get through before the summer's over.

"Ah, an avid book reader, I see! I never used to like book reading so much as a little kid, yet my grades in reading were always above average. Go fig.

Zephyrkitty
I'm also an anime and manga nerd. I've only really been into it for a couple of years, but a combination of finding good deals and being friends with other friends who can loan me some of their favorites has gone a long way. The only downside is sometimes having to decide whether to spend my money on a new DVD or a video game. XD

"Hm. I've been trying to get my fill of anime too. But alas, lack of cable for a period of time and little acess to manga can only get me so far..."

Zephyrkitty
I also play several instruments. I started the violin when I was six, and piano when I was ten. I don't have any really great stories regarding violin, but my piano teacher a couple of years ago was also a fan of anime and video games; it was incredibly fun to have a teacher who encouraged and supplied music from games I had played.

"Nice! I myself have wanted to try the accordion, but also the Ocarina too. Guess which game made me want to play that!" xd

Zephyrkitty
I have several smaller hobbies, as well. I like drawing, and it's a fun, enjoyable hobby even if I don't intend to ever do anything serious with it. Origami can be relaxing; I've got a collection of a few hundred paper cranes I've folded over the last seven years. I was on my high school's swimming team for four years despite never being much for sports, and I ended up enjoying it a lot even though I was one of the slower swimmers, so I'm hoping I can continue swimming in the future.

"That sounds delightful. It's been a while since I've done Origami, but I still remember how to do a paper crane by heart.

As for swimming, I never really was the adept swimmer. My mother frowned upon me going to pools. but whenever i got the chance, I'd try and teach myself to swim. I do it... slowly, and I don't really stay on the surface, but... Oh! where am I going with this? This is about you!

What a stimualting first response to the first question!

So, are there any professions you wish to seek in the future?"

Zephyrkitty
You know, since I was about five I've been telling everyone that when I grow up I wanted to be an engineer. However, in recent years I've found some other career ideas that interest me, so I'm honestly not sure what I'd like to go into. I've been thinking some involving psychology or forensics could be pretty interesting, though.

Of course, my other answer since I was little was that I wanted to be a violin teacher. Who knows, I might decide to go that route instead.

"Mmm, yes, psycology would siut you. In the times I've talked to you, you've always seemed to be the brainy type. Very intelligent! And I'm sure you'd do very well as a musician!

SO, what is the world around you like?"

Zephyrkitty
I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. Could you please clarify it a bit more?

"Oh! My apologies!"

*whisper whisper*

Zephyrkitty
Ah.

I don't live anywhere particularly special. It's a pretty normal, nice-sized city, although a lot of people would probably consider it small. I'd give specifics but people would probably be able to figure out where I lived then.

"Oh, but of course! Like I said, no personal information is needed. Whatever you wish to share is perfectly fine.

Okay, What would you consider to be or favorite season and why?"

Zephyrkitty
Probably spring because I live in the midwest. It gets cold here early and stays cold for most of the year. Spring's when it starts getting warmer, but it's not really hot and some of the summer insects (mosquitoes come to mind) haven't come out yet. It's also kind of nice to know the school year's almost finished, although it's always nicest when school actually finishes.

"Ah, that's great. So anything you'd like to add in conclusion?"

Zephyrkitty
Nothing.

Okay. Well, thank you for your thoughts; they're muchly appreciated! Do take care!

"Hm. I've been trying to get my fill of anime too. But alas, lack of cable for a period of time and little acess to manga can only get me so far..."

I can give some suggestions here.

The simplest one is that Adult Swim has a stream of that week's episodes on their website. It doesn't replace cable, but it works if you don't have it for a while. I could supply links to more legal streams, but I'd have to track them down again.

The other free option I've used a lot is to ask friends. I can't get everything, but every so often I get lucky and I can usually at least get another perspective on a series I'm looking into. Libraries will also carry some anime and manga; I'd suggest you check there.

As far as actually buying it goes, the price varies on how well you can bargain-hunt. Individual DVDs are generally $15-30 each (a 13-26 episode series is usually 3-7 volumes, depending on when it was released), but I'll be honest and say I don't usually pay quite that much.

My first suggestion would be to buy boxsets. Instead of $60-150 for one series, boxsets are generally more around $35-70 for the same thing, and you get it all at once. If the anime is released by VIZ you're in luck; they tend to add additional goodies to their boxsets (the first Bleach boxset came with a Chain of Fate wallet chain, for example). Also, if you're not interested in a box for the DVDs or extra pack-ins, you can usually buy the cheaper standard release and save money.

Are you able to order things online? It's possible to find some really good bargains at local stores, but it's a lot easier to find really good deals online. There's one online anime store I've used a few times, and they seem to always have some sort of sale on. Sometimes it's not much (right now they have a 20% off everything sale, for example), but they've also had 10 DVDs for $50/25 DVDs for $100 sales a few times; that's at least three series right there.

I've also gotten some really nice deals through Amazon, but you have to watch out for bootlegs on the marketplace. Something like 'import version' in the description is a sign it's a bootleg, along with the series being on fewer DVDs and having Chinese subtitles. However, ordering through Amazon themselves gets free shipping at $25. It's pretty easy to reach that amount if you order a couple items at once.

I can't give many suggestions regarding manga; I usually just take advantage of whatever coupons and giftcards come my way and couple that with Barnes and Noble's 10% membership discount. I do take advantage of the public library and chain bookstores' ability to order things for me, however. Apparently I've had Barnes and Noble order things for me so much that they've put my e-mail address on their mailing list, so my family will usually get two copies of their coupons. >D

That said, there's a used bookstore I go by a lot. There's never much, but I've seen a few manga volumes there for 50 cents before. Maybe you'll get luckier at a used bookstore where you live.

Also, VIZ recently announced that they'll be releasing a few manga boxsets. I think it was just Naruto, Bleach, Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and Death Note for now, but boxsets cost less than if you bought the individual volumes for retail price.

You know, I find it sad that the longest post I've written in a while is about bargain-hunting for anime and manga. It must say something about me.

hey there trainers! Here's S-Dude with a PokéTastic review!

My Pokémon Ranch
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

6/7/08

You start off talking to this girl called Hayley with some trippy background. You found out the story, (LOLWHUT, a story?) that she's a friend of Bebe. Can anyone guess who Bebe is? That's right, Little Jimmy, she was the creator of the PC System in Sinnoh. And that's about it for the story, or
lack of, really.

You then get teleported (the only word that describes it) by a series of rings. You then have chit-chat with Hayley, who turned into a retarded Mii. It goes something like this...
Retarded Hayley
Oh, hi there! Welcome to the Ranch! Blahblahblah halp me fill it with Pokeymanz plox. Blahblahblah Do you have Diamond or Pearl? If you don't, why the falcon punch did you buy this game? If you do, hooray! blahblahblah more cheery crap...

You then can choose up to 5 Mii's to start with, with more trippy circles of teleportation. Woah. @.@

She then gives you 6 starter Pokémon for your ranch. PAL users got Pikachu, (lawlcashcowforPookeymanz) Turtwig, (awesome turtle) Lucario, (the weird blue thing) Staravia, (the bird with the cow lick) MUDKIPZ!, (so i herd u liek dem) and of cause, the ever so pwnful...

Magikarp.

I don't know what I did to deserves such awesome MUDKIPZ! and Magikarp, but whatever it was, I should do it more often. cool

N-E-WAY, the "control" gets given to you. Well, I shouldn't call it control, more like "The-game-says-it's-control-but-in-fact-all-you-do-is-just-let-the-game-take-control-and-you-watch" control. Until you get to level 5. But then it's still limited.

Speaking of which, how to upgrade your ranch is simple enough. Just send in wave after wave of PC fillers lovable and adorable Pokémon. You only get a set number, as to start with, including the Retarded Hayleys' Pokémon, you can have up to 20. But when you reach the amount, the next day, you can have more. Joyous. Every day, at the end the first time you exit the Ranch for the day, she'll ask you some questions, and afterwards, like the old-skool fagime, they'll be a silhouette of a Pokémon she'll bring tomorrow. Oh boy, bet you can't wait!

Are YOU a hardcore enough trianer to know what Pokémon THIS is?!

And speaking yet again of Pokémon Diamond/Pearl connectivity, when you connect, Retard Hayley will steal your 'dex and see what you haven't caught. She then puts up some of them on a bulletin board, under Wanted Pokémon. Gee, sounds like she's gonna punish them or something. At random, if Hayley has a certain Pokémon, she'll trade you for the Pokémon that was wanted. The Pokémon she has have rare-ish berries for you. More joy. If you extend your ranch big enough, she'll trade you a Phione, (:0) and when your ranch hits the big 1000, a Mew (:00000000000000)

FACT: Pokémon came from DS-shaped hot-air balloons with propellers by light.

Ok, you've uploaded your wonderful Pokémon. What now? Well, sit and watch, and take the occasional screenshot... and that's it. People are raving how...
People
OMG DIS GAYM IS TEH SUX! ALL U DO IS LEWK AT POKEYMANZ! AND TEH GRAFIX ARE GAY!

Looking at the Pokémon, with the calming music, is, well, calming, and the graphics are "gay", because MPR does, what I call, "kawaiierfies" them. It turns them cute, and since when is cute "gay"? Chicks like cute. ;D

Now, the ending statement. Sure, this game won't appeal to everyone, but it appeals hard to Pokémon trainers, like some of us.

Story: 1/5. There practically is none.

Graphics: 4/5. Sure, they're kawaiierfied, but they could be even MORE kawaii.

Music: 3.5/5: It's calming, but it can get on your nerves.

Controls: 2/5: To start with, there's none, but once you shove gently place your PC Fillers lovable and adorable Pokémon, it gives you somewhat limited control

Replayability: 1/5: Once you hit 1000, all you do is sit back and watch.

Price: 2/5: For what it's worth, it leaves you feeling that your money is worth a bit more somewhere else.

Overall score: 7.5/10 : I would love to give it more, really, but I feel a tiny bit disappointed with it. It's a great game, no doubts about it, but it could've been pulled off a bit better, but then again, Nintendo is a cashcow, and will continualy beat franchises, until they're dead and pulling out crap, until something good comes along. MPR falls into the mediocre range. Not terrible, but not fantastic either. sweatdrop If you're fanatic about them Pocket Monsters, this title is for you. If you go WTF at "Poe-key-mon", then stay clear.

User ImageHey there, cult members! I decided to get in on N-Cult News with a game review I made for FINAL FANTASY TACTICS A2: Grimoire of the Rift, which was relesed in the U.S. on June 24th, 2008. You don't have to agree with this, but this is my personal opinion of the game:
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS A2: Grimoire of the Rift
System: Nintendo DS
Developers: Square Enix
Publishers: Square Enix
Genre: Strategy and RPG

POINT OF GAME: Basically a RPG/Strategy game here, folks. Customize your clan as the new FF Tactics protagonist (default name: Luso) and waste no time entering the fray of combat. Use new weapons, jobs, races and abilities to gain your way to victory as you quest for a way to leave Ivalice and return to your home.

GRAPHICS (10/10): Excellent art detail. Graphics for this strategy game are wisely kept to the graphical standpoint of the first Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, while making some slight changes in detail. The character animations are the same, but with a few additions that make the units look more nice and animated. The environments are artful and very creative. The attack animations also look really good.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

SOUND QUALITY (10/10): The musical soundtrack is very nice, I love it. For those of you who have played the first FFT Advance, you'll notice it's familiar tunes are remixed in this game, as well as the addition of a few new tunes for the game. The sound effects are nice, sharp and sound really cool. No spoken dialogue, all restricted to text...but it works well. The most common time you'll hear voices is when a unit is KO'd.

CONTROLLING AND PLAYABILITY (8.75/10): The regular controls are pretty good, however, don't even bother with the stylus controls. Just stick to regular button controls. The lack of camera rotation is kind of offsetting. Some of the menus in the game have confusing controls that require some time to work with, but you'll get used to it. But overall, the rest of the game's playability is good.

ENTERTAINMENT (9.25/10): I have to agree with many professional reviews on the story. It does kind of suck, but it's far from unbearable and does have numerous moments of glory. The real-charm of this game is the combat, customization of units, lengthy main quest, numerous side quest and many secret characters to unlock. The customization possibilities are even more numerous with the addition of two new races and many more jobs. The law system provides a good challenge, however, I have to criticize that some of the laws are really restricting and just unfair (for example: "no dealing over 50 damage" or "no missing." WTF?!), but at least breaking the laws won't be as much a pain in the a** as it was in the first FFT Advance. Instead of going to jail, you just loose your clan privilege and you don't get law-obeying reward items.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
REPLAY: 3.5 out of 5
You'll spend so much time trying to beat it 100% that you won't care that much for a replay. But that's what makes the game's entertainment more fun and seemingly endless.

THE GOOD: The graphics are impressive and the majority of the game's playability is good. The real charm of this game is the seemingly endless amounts of missions and battles that test your skill in making the best combat units. You can customize your units in your clan in whatever way you want and there are numerous way to do it. This game is entertainment for hours on end.

THE BAD: The story is kind of lame and some of the laws are frustratingly restrictive. The stylus controls are just plain lame, but thankfully not necessary. The lack of camera rotation is a big error and some of the menu controls take a while to get used to.

THE BOTTOM-LINE: This is a great game, fit for any strategy game fan and any RPG fan. There are rare occasions where a Final Fantasy game comes out that sucks...however, this game isn't one of them! With the endless ways to battle and customize your clan, the numerous missions and side quests, this game will keep you occupied for a long time. However, the story is a little bad and there are a few things amiss with the controlling and playability. However, I cannot deny that this is one of the best DS games out there and it was well worth the $40 I spent for it.
BUY THIS GAME!

FINAL SCORE: 9.5/10
PostPosted: Sat Jul 05, 2008 6:37 pm

Hmm... these are BOTH great reviews, guys. But for the sake of fairness, lets let each other get some breathing room so people can respond to one. then you can post the next one.

Just so everyone gets a little exposure, okay? ^^
