YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.

No time to dwell on his mistakes, because the mannequin was making it's way forward once more. He took a moment to make sure he was still calm, that he still felt the focus that he had before. Then and only then did he reach down to draw another arrow from the quiver at his feet. Yesterday had been easy, save for two spectacular misses on his part. Why should today be any different, really? He had this in the bag, and he knew he did.

He went through all of the motions again, the same as he had done time and time again before. Nock the arrow, hold it firmly in place, raise the bow, aim, draw the string, sight, aim, and fire. This time he hadn't waited for the breeze to die down, which he probably should have, but his confidence had led him to believe he could hit the target easily, that he could gauge how much further to one side he needed to aim in order for his arrow to hit it's mark even considering the push of air against it.

He had been wrong to assume he could possess such skill after only using the bow once before today. The arrow barely managed to strike into the mannequins shoulder, but at least it had hit, and at least it had made the stitched and leather faceless and eerie living dummy stumble back once more.

YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.

Never mind that last mistake now, it was in the past. He had to move on, get this done, knock that jack blasted sucker on it's a** and keep it from reaching his fortification. Had to imagine that this was a life or death situation, and deal with it as though it were actually such. He would not allow his structure to fall to the enemy, he would not allow harm to come to those he cared about.

Everything he needed to do was done in one smooth motion, and it was going great, he was poised and ready with the bow and arrow already in hand in a movement that took him mere seconds. He drew the string back, back, back....

..and it snapped, the arrow falling uselessly to the dirt, his mouth held in an open 'O' of surprise.

Oh jack oh jack oh jack. He thought, his inner zen completely shattered, his center lost in the turmoil of his sudden panicked thoughts. He had broken his bow. It was broken. How was he supposed to fight without a weapon?

Easy answer. Go and get a new one!

And so, he did, scrambling out of his defensive structure and stumbling over towards the weapon rack to grab himself a new bow. He wasn't quite sure if this was even allowed but he needed to do something, and nobody seemed to be telling him that he couldn't sooo....

He turned and made his way back to his fort, completely ashamed and embarrassed by what he had done. But these things happened, right? It was just another mistake that he had to learn from, move on from.

Of course, in the time that it took him to grab a new bow, the mannequin had advanced further forward, unscathed by Alex's failure.

YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.

This new bow was slightly different then the one that Alex had held before. It was a bit larger, and heavier, but neither of those things bothered the zomboil too much since his hands were quite large and he possessed a fair amount of upper body strength. A bow was a bow, and any bow was better then none! Still, he hoped that by getting himself a new one he hadn't inadvertently disqualified himself from the class. He wanted to be able to finish this, to be allowed to prove himself.

He had time to make up for now, but even knowing this, Alex knew the benefits to be had from taking the time to center himself first. And so, he closed his eyes, and for what felt like at least the dozenth time in the past few days, he meditated, and found himself immersing his mind with his surroundings once more, until he felt fresh and ready, peace restored in his mind.

Eyes fluttered back open, only a few seconds had passed as he reached down to scoop up the arrow that had dropped to the ground before. He lifted it up, sliding it into place along the string and readying himself, feet in position, back straight, eyes forward and sighted along the arrow's shaft. He drew back the arrow, and released as soon as the breeze died down enough that he felt he could get a good, clear shot of the target.

He was not disappointed.

The arrow took the mannequin full in the chest, near where another arrow he had shot from before was already buried. His eyes glinted in triumph as the mannequin went stumbling back once more. He was managing to keep it back, to hold his own. His victory was close at hand, he could feel it!

Danny didn't like this phase at all. Not because of the mannequin fighting- she was definitely okay with that. After the long, drawn out battle, she was ready for revenge.

It was just ... the idea of making a fort? Not so much. As exemplified by the sandcastle making contest in the trials, she wasn't very creative. A pile of dirt was good enough for her.

However, the way that Cybele was talking about this being their FINAL challenge, utilizing ALL their skills ... It made a ghoul cautious. She didn't want to disappoint.

At first when she ran out into the forest, she simply made a pile of dirt. It was habit, it was comfortable. In fact, for a while she just sat there, wallowing in the wonderful pile of dirt she had made. It just felt like the easiest thing to do.

After a while she felt more insecure though. She saw a few other students gathering sticks, chatting excitedly about how much work they were putting into their forts. Should she have been doing the same?

Timidly, she crawled out of her little pile of dirt and began looking around. Her eyes first fell on a set of pinecones not far from her fort. She set them around her little pile, like mines. There, that would be enough, right? What she'd started though, she couldn't stop. The pinecones weren't enough. She found a set of vines with thorns and laced them around her pile, like barbed wire. Finally, she walked quite a distance from her fort to find a set of sticks, strong and pointy as hell. She stuck them in her pile.

Satisfied with her work, Danny sat down in her dirt pile. She waited for a moment or two, then perked up visibly as she remembered something. She reached down to her ribbon belt and snapped the little trashbot off of its holding spot. She then put it on top of the dirt pile like a proud mummy. FORT: COMPLETE.

[ENTER day 4]

There was that word again, 'children'. He did not like that word, the snap of his tail showing his irritation. The expression of interest and anticipation he had worn only a moment before, turning again to one of distrust and irritation. Arms crossed, his eyes narrowed, a low growl muttered under his breath. If he'd thought about it, maybe it wasn't the word that bothered him as much as it was the tone with which she had first spoken it, or maybe it was that the word had been spoken by a horsewoman. Working through his demons, finding his inner strength, it seemed it had not eased his anger and suspicion toward the horsemen.

Hmph!

A glare leveled at the instructor, another snap of his tail, Sheridan turned and stalked away, resolving to turn that anger to the task at hand.

He may have seemed to literally bury himself in his work, digging out the earth around his chosen location, pushing mounds of dirt around the edges of the trench. The dirt he packed into mid-height dense walls, broad at the base while narrower at the peak, a design which should have led to greater stability of the barricade. Given his preference, he would have chosen a fortification among the tall branches of the trees, but it didn't matter, he would adapt to the situation he was in. Maybe that was part of the point.

Satisfied with the base of the structure, Sheridan foraged further into the forest, searching for materials to strengthen the fort beyond the basic earth walls. Something cracked under his foot, causing him to pause in his steps and look down. Pine cones, abundantly scattered across the forest floor, most likely from that tall tree he was currently standing under. It was fortunate for him he had thick scaled feet, perhaps his assailant would not be so fortunate.

Several armloads of pine cones later, he again ventured deeper into the forest. This time it was a large vine that had caught his attention, one end clinging to large branch of a tree above. The vine was thick, heavy, covered with large and rather vicious looking thorns. A half smirk half snarl, Sheridan caught the end of the vine and with a hard yank pulled it from the tree, careful to avoid the sharp thorns himself.

His final trip among the trees yielded the discovery of several large and jagged rocks. Rocks which he carefully collected one by one as he foraged among the trees in a broad and winding path that finally brought him back to the fort complete with several dozen potential land mines.

With his new found materials, he set to fortifying the structure, circling the base of the walls with sharp and hopefully feet shredding stones. Above that he littered the structure with pine cones, placing some of the especially large ones at a few key points near the peak of the walls. The vine he coiled at the very peak of the walls like a string of barbed wire, a final deterrent against his opponent.

YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.

Though his upper arms were starting to stiffen, and a steady and burning ache was beginning to form between his shoulder blades, Alex continued on. True to his zombie heritage, he would not give up, he would not back down until he was rendered incapable. His perseverance would see him through to the end of this, he knew it would.

Without even having to think about it now, he had the arrow already set, the bow already held in place and ready to be utilized. He drew the string back, and then let it go, the string letting out a soft twang as the arrow whistled through the air towards it's target. This arrow didn't strike quite as true as the last, but it did it's job, digging in around where the mannequins hip area might be and making it stumble back yet again.

There was a certain sense of elation he felt each time an arrow struck the target, even if it was only to hit at it's arms or legs. This time, however, Alex frowned. He had hit the target several times and yet still it started to struggle forward once more. It was strong. Stronger then the other mannequins Cybele had pitted them against? Possibly...It was definitely an option to consider, anyways. This one had been struck several times and it didn't appear to be slowing down at all, not like the one yesterday that had begun to jerk and shamble forwards at an increasingly pathetic rate.

Hrrrmmmm...

With the fort finished and the black dog safely inside, the mannequin was activated. The mannequin, which was currently shuffling towards him at a slow, steady pace---but notably faster than the day before.

Wonderful.

Lifting his bow, the same bow and quiver he had chosen from the day before, he readied a shot. Though because there was now a fort in the way, it made the shot far more difficult to aim, and the arrow flew up and over the mannequin landing harmlessly somewhere behind.

"Oh... this is good."

After the first arrow missed, the black drew another, preparing to fire. If this was going to end up being a repeat of yesterday, he was was going to be annoyed. Regardless, he released the string---only to watch the arrow sail past the intended target.

As hard as it was for the zomboil to admit, he was becoming almost weary. His arms felt numb and heavy, his back ached, but he knew he had to continue on, since it did not appear that this mannequin was going to stop. So, he reached down to find himself another arrow, slid the nock into place, held it steady, and brought the bow up once more.

He could feel the faint trembling in his arms before he even drew the string back, and then once he had done that the trembling turned into light quivers. Still, he needed to do this, and he needed to do it quick. He wasn't able to pull the string back as far, and so, when he released, the arrow arched through the air, catching a draft that sent it spiraling downward and lodged itself in the dummies shin. It did nothing to slow the mannequin down, however, and the disquieting figure continued it's steady way towards where Alex stood in wait.

YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.

Two arrows wasted, and the black dog was starting to feel like he had made no improvement whatsoever since yesterday.

Perhaps the bow and arrow weren't meant for him after all..? Still, if he could, he would really like to learn to use one properly. Though that meant, he couldn't give up now. He had to keep going. What was the point of giving up before you even started? Hell, even if he did fail this course today, he still had the future to learn? Right?

With that in mind, the black dog let another arrow fly, satisfied to at least see the arrow hit its target.

YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.

His shoulders were sagging now but he rolled them over several times in an attempt to work out the kinks, the soreness, so he could continue on. The mannequin was still coming forward, and he was starting to doubt that he was going to succeed in his task. Would it all come down to whether or not his fortifications could keep the mannequin at bay and stop it from attacking Alex? At this rate, it just might, though he was loathe to allow that to happen.

With a wince at the pain between his shoulders, Alex leaned down and pulled out another arrow. Even his hands were shaking from the repetitive strain but he resolutely ignored it.

He had to get this done.

He tried to focus, nocked the arrow, raised the bow. It was all he could do to pull back on that string and aim. The mannequin was getting closer now, only 20feet away or less, he wasn't quite sure. It wouldn't require as much effort, really. He just had to pull back and release and...

The string slipped from his grasp, the arrow toppled to the ground. With an exasperated groan Alex's tilted back his head and gazed skyward.

This was quickly turning into a disaster.

He was losing his focus, could feel his emotions and thoughts starting to filter back in and make things harder to do. He bent at the waist, picking up the arrow that had lodged into the ground and wiping the dirt off of the tip of the arrow on his jeans before nocking it back on the bow.

Had to keep trying, couldn't give up now. It wasn't in him to give up. It wasn't in him to back down from anything.

Raising the bow up, he sighted down the shaft again, one eye squinting shut as he drew back the string for what felt more like the millionth time rather then what might have been the tenth or twelfth. His arms were shaking, just like before, but he still managed to keep a hold, and release.

The arrow cut through the air, but was quickly barely skirting above the ground before lodging itself below the mannequins knee. It wasn't the best of hits, but it made the mannequin stumble back into a retreat.

He had managed, barely, to hold it off for just one more round. Sucking in air into his lungs that he didn't need, he let it back out again with hiss between clenched teeth.

How much longer could he keep this up? He did not want to have to rely on the defenses he had thrown up around his fort and potentially fail!

Tybalt let out a sigh. With the last shot, he had managed to push the mannequin back a little, but just as he let this arrow fly, his finger slipped and it shot off course. It still hit the target, yes, but only by knocking it back. What happened to the arrow itself, was anyone's guess.
