Reserved Solo: Christmas Eve
{December 24th, 2010}

Luka sat in front of his desk, his journal open to a clean page.

It was a weird thing he'd started after watching Elai run the same ritual before bed. The man would fill this page with words about his day before going to bed, and Luka planned to do the same.

At first it had been frustrating. Letters were hard to remember, words hard to spell. But within just a few weeks, all those problems had passed. And now, he was writing a page if not multiple pages without issues.

December 24, 2010

Tomorrow is xmas. Elai spelled it another way, but I can't quite remember the spelling and this one is easier to write.

It will be my first xmas. I'm excited. He says there's a Santa Claus that gives presents. And, we will stop by his house to see gramps and nana. We're going to have dinner and spend the night.

Today Elai and I decorated the house some more and finished the tree. He couldn't reach the top of the tree, so I got to place the star. The tree smelled good. He said it's evergreen.

We have stockings in front of the fireplace. And, Elai even put Winston in a green and red vest. I think it's funny, Winston doesn't even notice it.

Setting the pen down, Luka gave the page one satisfactory nod before shutting the journal. It was time for sleep now, he had a busy first Christmas tomorrow.

Christmas Entry: Part 1
A Busy Christmas Morning for Santa's Helper

{December 24th, 2010}

Eyes straining from the lack of lights, Jezabroux checked the address on the slip of paper one last time and then the number on the door. It was the address he had found from the Lab 305 guardian contacts sheet. Hopefully it would be up to date. He could only comfort himself with the knowledge that the listed number and apartment door and building matched the one on the page. Sliding the strap of the case off his shoulder, Jezabroux slowly set the large black case down as quietly as he could by the door; and despite its size it was quite light. Then, reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the note he had prepared only moments ago in the car.

Dear Prajna,
Namini has told me you’ve wanted a cello for quite some time.
And after reading her letter about why you deserve one, here’s a merry Christmas to you.
I hope you like my gift.
-Santa

P.S. You had no chimney, otherwise I would have left it inside.

Reaching into his pocket again, the man pulled out a small tape dispenser. Ripping off a piece, he taped the note to the front of the case. It would stand out like a star against a cloudy sky. Propping it against the wall and the door way, he slid a phone book in front to keep the case from slipping and falling. Looking around, he pressed the doorbell twice and slowly slipped away. Hopefully one of the Naos, more accurate Prajna, would find it before someone else without any Yule-tide spirit decided to take it.

He wasn’t quite sure what had led him to do this. Perhaps it was because he knew what kind of a situation Namini was in, or simply because the onyx cello on the end of the stringed-instrument display had reminding him of a starless night. Whatever the reason, in his heart the acupuncturist knew that it was the right thing to do. Hopefully Prajna would find it just as perfect as Jezabroux had.

Walking back to his car, the man couldn't help whistle a merry tune. Pulling his sleeve back, Jezabroux checked his watch. Ten minutes from two in the morning. He still had plenty of time.

Now then, it was time to tackle the trickier task of surprising his own ward.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lying down on the floor of his living room, Jezabroux was trying to figure out what in his right mind had had led him to the idea of 'magically making the piano appear,' especially since a piano wasn't hollow and relatively easy to carry like a cello or boxed set of DVDs. Nevertheless, the acupuncturist had managed to drag and push the damn box from outside to inside his apartment with little noise. Which was actually quite a feat if one considered the size and weight of a Steinway UP-132 PE upright piano. The longer he stared at the box, the stronger the desire to finish what he started. He didn't need to assemble it or anything, just remove the box and move the piano between the wall and the couch. A little furniture moving and hopefully the living room would look a little less cramped than it actually was.

He grabbed the box cutter and flashlight sitting on the coffee table and proceeded to open the box. A light smile formed on the man's face as he saw the polished surface of the piano. No matter how much he was complaining at the moment regarding the foolishness of trying to play Santa's helper, it would all be worth it in 5 hours from now when Luka would be looking at it with eyes of adoration. This was mission Perfect First Christmas, laziness was not permitted. Especially since the upright was finally out the box and just sitting there in its entirety in his hallway.

Setting the flashlight on the ground, Jezabroux got behind the couch and slowly pushed it closer to the television by a foot. It should be enough space. Rolling up his sleeves, the acupuncturist got one side of the piano and pushed. The wheels on the instrument groaned in protest but rolled nonetheless. And after a few more pushes, it was lined up perfectly against the wall. Just the perfect location too. It would be the first thing Luka would see when he floated into the room.

He slid the bench under to its rightful spot.

Grabbing pieces of the cardboard box and the plastic strips that had bound the box securely, Jezabroux retreated to his room.

Almost done. He just had two things left to do now. Fill the stockings and leave the other presents under the tree. Reaching under his bed, he pulled out a shoe box and opened the lid. Jezabroux had learned early on that Luka was quite apt at finding hidden objects. That is, unless they were hidden in another mundane object. Smiling to himself, he reached in and picked up a baby blue daisy ornament. It was a surprise he had found in the mailbox only days ago, addressed from Lab 305 to Luka. And so far, that place had not failed him yet. Grabbing the other items inside the box, he tiptoed past Luka's room and carefully placed them in the stocking.

He made another trip to his room and this time returned with a small wrapped box. It was the leather bracelet the Satyr had fixated on only days back during his adventure at the mall. Slipping it under their miniature tree, Jezabroux let a low whistle.

Not a bad day's work.

And now, it was time to for sleep.

Christmas Entry: Part 2
Shine on Me

{December 25th, 2010}

Luka let out an inaudible gasp as he saw the dark and imposing upright in the living room. He'd seen the same piano in the mall's music store, and somehow Santa had brought it home. He knew Luka had wanted it, and he had given.

Carefully pulling out the bench from the piano, Luka took a seat.

Taking a deep breath, Luka ran his fingers along the surface of the fallboard. It was sleek, cool to the touch and study. Raising the fallboard, he sat in silence as he absorbed the glossy pearl piano keys. White and black, the keys ran across in a hypnotizing visual ballad. That enchanting call of the keys was what had drawn him to take a seat on the bench in the store, and the same enchanting call was begging for him to press its keys. Holding his breath, Luka gingerly ran his finger across the key. It was like touching the night sky, mesmerizing to the touch and intoxicating.

He took a moment to press each key, familiarizing himself with each note. Already, he could hear the different songs the piano was capable of singing. He could even recall the different songs he'd heard in the past while Elai played.

Fingers trembling, the Satyr began to play his own pieces. Which each press the notes gained more power, more confidence. Like lines of electricity, something coursed from deep inside his rune to the tips of his fingertips. They were sounds, rhythms that were deeply ingrained inside him. With each chord, he could see glimpses of leaves, woodlands and fauna. And soon, the living room echoed with the soulful sound of a forgotten woodland sonata.

Breaking the Headlines
{December 30th, 2010}

"Good morning Gambino, my name is Ellen Boaz and you are watching Gambino news flash. A bizarre scene had emerged over night on the western edge of Gambino Isle. A building which is widely known as the 'Lab 305' by the locals was frozen into an ice castle overnight. There are currently a few speculations, but as of now, there weren't any solid explanation to how such a bizarre thing could happen in such a short amount of time. It is believe that there are two individuals that resides in the building, their fates are currently unknown. Officials had been trying their best to break through the thick ice layer surrounding the building, but work had proven to be difficult in this cold weather. And reports are saying that somehow, the hot water sprays that the firemen were using to attempt to melt the ice had somehow frozen upon contact as well. It is as if there is an ethereal force that caused this strange scene, and they are not ready to let go yet."

Oh my god.

Those were the only words that the acupuncturist could even begin to string together as Channel 9 replayed the aerial clips of the frozen building they had shown only moments earlier. It was Lab 305, the same facility he had gone only four months ago to pick up Luka. And now, it was frozen into a winter wonderland castle of the most twisted kind. His mind was racing, moving at the speed of a thousand clicks. What could have possibly cause for this to occur? It couldn't have been the weather. Though it was still freezing cold, it made no sense for just one building to be frozen in the midst of a hundred others. And, there was the factor of 'water freezing as soon as it made contact with ice.' It didn't add up unless... maybe, it another experiment? His eyes fell on his charge Luka, who was 'sitting' on the floor and also following the story with much interest. If indeed a Raevan was the cause of this freezing, then did it mean that Luka also had the potential to do damage on such a scale? He had never seen his ward as a danger before but.... this... this was just mind blowing; it was nothing short of staggering.

It is believe that there are two individuals that resides in the building, their fates are currently unknown.

Swearing under his breath, he got off the couch and headed towards the list of Lab 305 contacts taped to the refrigerator door. Looking at the sheet, his bicolored eyes fell on the Lab's landline number. Jezabroux grabbed his phone off the kitchen counter and punched the listed number in.

Nothing. The landlines were down. He was just getting voicemail.

Jezabroux couldn't help but recall the receptionist's face during Luka's pickup. A vibrant young man with colors of sour apple and royal purple. What was his name? Zeke... Fair? No. Ferric? Paris? Swearing under his breath, he got off the couch and headed towards the list of Lab 305 contacts taped to the refrigerator door. Looking down the list of names, his eyes fell on the name.

Zeke Farris.

Phone pressed to his ear, Jezabroux exhaled the breath he was holding when he heard the ringing tone. Someone. Anyone. He needed something, anything.

He needed to know what the hell was going on.

A Phone Conversation with Zeke
{December 30th, 2010}

Participants: Jezabroux and Zeke
Location: Their Respective Apartments
Type: {Private Message PRP}
Status: Underway

Koco Pelli
Cell phone held up to his ear, Jezabroux tapped the surface of the marble countertop with an impatient finger. He could hear a ring, then a second and finally a click as the call was answered. "Hello? Is this Mr. Zeke Farris? Mr. Farris, this is Jezabroux. Luka's guardian, I'm calling to as about Lab 305." The acupuncturist's voice was lace with worry, anxiety and mostly importantly, fear.

Ravina Loki
It seemed like as soon as he had gotten off the phone with Anita, the screen was lighting up once more. The display on the front of his cellphone alerted him to a number he wasn't familiar with but, with things as they were, Zeke did not let this go to voicemail.

"He-" Immediately he was cut off, but the name that graced his ears was familiar and made his stomach do a tumble. Jezabroux. Luka's guardian. The most recent Raevan he had homed. He didn't waste any time reminiscing. "Yes this is mister...Yes this is Zeke!" His words came out on a warbled choke, but he was quick to clear his throat and turn his volume down to something respectable. "Jezabroux...I take it you saw the news too."

If not, well...Jez had a bit of explaining to do.

Koco Pelli
Jezabroux exhaled the breath he had been holding when Zeke identified himself on the other end of the phone. It was a reassuring though to know that Zeke was fine, even if the two had only talked once before. "Yes." His voice grave. "What is happening? Are you alright? How is Miss Anastacia? This isn't something natural is it? Should I be keeping a careful eye on Luka?" The questions just rushed out in Jezabroux's state of panic. "I'm sorry, I'm overwhelmed by what's happening at the moment."

Ravina Loki
"I--" Even though he was expecting it, he was still thrown through a loop by the amount of questions thrown at him. His pacing increased and his free hand waved up and down in an attempts to control his own breathing, collect his thoughts, and ease his haywire nerves all at once. "I'm...I'm all right, just a little all over the place right now. Anya's fine. Actually..." He turned around and saw no one but Dust Bunny, who was peering up at him from the floor. "She's sleeping. It's...It's early for her."

He managed a shaky, almost disbelieving laugh at that, but it didn't sound like him at all. It was touched with a small dose of fearful madness that he knew he had to get under control despite all that was coming to light in these minutes. He was a representative of the Lab after all. If he sounded too off, that would lead to other guardians getting antsy. He took a breath and released it, sitting himself down on the edge of the couch to force himself to be still.

"I'm gonna be honest with you, Jez, I...I don't know what's going on. I was going about my pre-work routine a-and when I turned on the news, there it was." He stared at the TV that was now muted, but showing another run of the odd scene at large. Zeke could only watch in renewed fear as a replay of firemen launching boiling hot water from hoses at the building to no effect was shown. Only after the scene faded into another news story did he realize he was being too quiet and not speaking into the phone at all.

"I'm sorry, Jez, I just...All I know is the police made a barricade about a couple blocks wide out there and that my calls to Alex have been going straight to her voicemail."

Koco Pelli
As Zeke continued to speak, Jezabroux slowly realized what Zeke was no where near the frozen facility. The young man must have been at home, considering Zeke had just said 'prework routine' and 'news'. It was both relieving and slightly frustrating, he was glad that the young man was safe but it was unfortunate that both men were in the dark about what was going on. "I'm so relieved that both you and Miss Anastacia are safe."

His eyes fell on the TV screen as they replayed a clip of the iced building. Realizing that a silence was building, Jezabroux pulled up an island stool and took a seat. His legs were going weak. "Is Miss Alex in the building?" His throat was suddenly dry. "I tried to call the building through the landline and got directed to their voicemail. I'm not surprised that you could not reach her via phone."

Jezabroux massaged his temples. "Should I prepare for any unexpected behavior in Luka, Mr. Farris?" He asked. "I... I can't help but think that it must be another Raevan... that ice is not natural. I saw the clips of the firemen hosing it down with boiling water and it... Nothing is rendering the ice apart Mr. Farris. Is that not what these Raevan fel essences are? Parts of natural that have been changed to become something else, something unnatural?"

Ravina Loki
"Thanks Jez," he said with some offhandedness as the man on the other end of the line spoke of his relief that there was at least one Lab employee not trapped within the ice palace. As Jezabroux spoke the question he had been asking himself - as well as thinking just the same it couldn't be true, her phone was probably clogged with calls - he could only shake his head and ball his free hand into a fist over his suddenly sick-feeling gut.

"I don't know, Jez. I'm holding out hope that she's just getting bombarded with calls and I was dialing at the wrong time." It was a definite plausibility. Alex was well known among the Lab and Zeke, who had only met a tiny portion of the population thus far, had always had a feeling she was sort of the 'face of Lab 305'. People went to his sister and called her first for things. She had homed a lot of Raevans before his time there and had experienced with their the various trials that came with the beings they had given a home to. With what was going on, it only fit, but he knew he wouldn't breathe easy until he heard her voice coming through his phone.

As the acupuncturist gave him another round of questions, Zeke got up off the couch and started pacing. His mind hadn't focused on just what caused the ice or what it could really be, but now that the words had been uttered, he felt something inside him sink. Boiling water froze on contact with it. The entire building - and it was sizable - was encased in a thick cover overnight. The weather was cold and the Lab was near the ocean, but not close enough to suffer the sprays. The hand that was on his gut went to his temple, pushing back his bangs to hold what was quickly starting to throb.

"I don't...I don't think you have to worry about Luka," No way in hell was this caused by a certain virus, but since the Lab was the only target it had to be Raevan in origin. "But I do think think you might be on to something there. I saw those clips too and I guess I was getting too worked up about Alex but..." His voice trailed off and he bit himself on the tongue. Jez was looking for guidance - as others might later if they found out about Lab's newbie - so he had to give what seemed logical. Again he took a breath.

"You live in Gambino right?" First, get where the man lived for sure. He had a feeling that the Raevan - if it was that for sure - had to still be in the building. Those in Aekea, Barton, and Durem like himself were fine, but if that much power could freeze a building overnight? ...He didn't want to begin to think it, especially as his stomach gave another sick flop to the idea of the ice master being inside where his friends, family, and baby Raevans were and could be.

Koco Pelli
Zeke was trying to help. Yes, but the acupuncturist felt like he was sinking into an abyss of confusion and anxiety. Talking a deep breath to calm himself, he nodded at Zeke's comment about Luka. Even if Luka was starting to show signs of playing around with his abilities, hopefully, it would be nothing of that scale. A few broken lightbulbs was something he could easily fix, an exploding apartment not so much. Strumming his fingers against the granite countertop, Jezabroux couldn't help but chuckled at the man's question. "No, Mr. Farris. I live in Durem. My parents live in Gambino, but it is nowhere close enough to the Lab 305 building so I am not too worried at the moment. I will have to call them later to check and see if they're okay anyways."

His eyes instinctively fell back onto the TV, hoping that they had more information. But, it was the same. The same clips, the same lines, they were just as underinformed as he was. Possibly more baffled than he at the moment considering they had no idea what Lab 305 did. "Mr. Farris, you're going to drive Gambino to see if you can get to the building correct? If you find anything new, could you call me back please? I need to leave for the clinic now. I'll have my cell phone on me so feel free to call me back as soon as you can." Jezabrouz couldn't help but recall how nerve wreaked the receptionist seemed. "And, Mr. Farris, you seem really stressed, particularly about Miss Alex. If you'd like, we can meet up for a cup of coffee and talk face to face."

He could only imagine how stressed the young man was. It was a lot of stress and responsibility, answering the call of a distressed guardian. Jezabroux had a feeling that he was not the only one to call Zeke.

Ravina Loki
"Durem, right, okay." That hand on his temple went into his hair - a sign he was feeling sheepish. "Sorry, I coulda swore it was Gambino, but like I said, I'm kind of all over the place right now." Hearing that Jez's parents lived in Gambino didn't make him feel better and he stepped on his own toes in order to snap himself out of it. He couldn't run around like a chicken with its head cut off! Look to the positives. Find them. Cling to them...

When he heard the question about driving to the Lab, it made him pause and look out the windows as though he was hit with a sudden epiphany. He had been pacing around the room with his hands in his hair or else on the phone with Anita but he hadn't been thinking just what he was going to do. He was half dressed for work, and still had to go in, but now the idea was in his head. He had to see it. He had to try and see if there was some way...Any way...

"I will call you if I learn anything, Jez." He was still looking out the windows but he wasn't really seeing what lay beyond the glass. Zeke was working this all out in a manner of moments. He had to call work and say he'd at least be late, then wake up Anya and get her out to the car which might be difficult depending on her mood. He'd drive them both out there and then...Well he'd go from there! Roll with the punches, water off a duck's back, come what may.

"I think coffee would only work against me right now, but thank you for the offer. I might get more calls today, so I'll have to have an ear out for that, but maybe some other time if that's okay?" He hoped so and hoped Jez wasn't offended by the decline or if his voice held any clipped tones, because he really couldn't sit around and chat about his feelings right now. He heard the man's words about having to go to work, and once again nodded to himself as though Jez was right there before him. "I actually have to call into work myself right now, but trust me Jezabroux, I will call you if I get anything new, you can count on that." And then, though it seemed so suddenly out of place, he added: "Have a good day."

Light Up The Sky
{January 1st, 2011}

“So, did you think of any New Years resolutions?” Elai asked, a smile on his face. He didn’t actually expect his charge to have any given how young the boy was, but seeing as to how many questions Luka had been asking about the new year and certain traditions, it only seemed right to ask.

”I did. But, just two.” Luka said with a smile, amused by his guardian’s curiosity.

“Oh? Do you plan to share?”

”No. They’re for me to know.” Luka said with a snicker. One was quite simple, getting a better understanding the world. Elai’s routines and the other things that seemed to come so easily to the man like speaking and writing. The second, was improving his piano skills. That was for his own personal desires. While he’d only had the piano for a week or so, Luka was more than eager to improve his hand strength to play more rigorous pieces like the ones Elai liked to indulge him with. More importantly, he wanted to be able to play the piano even better than his guardian. He wanted to be able to do at least one thing better than his guardian.

The Satyr’s attention was drawn away from his guardian as the TV began to start a countdown from 10. ”Elai, it’s starting!” Eye glinting with life, the Satyr threw open the balcony door and leaned over the metal. ”Quick Elai!”

“I’m coming.” Grabbing his glass of wine off the coffee table, Elai walked to the balcony. Leaning over the edge, he placed a hand on the Frei’s shoulder. It was strange to think that months ago, Luka wasn’t even a part of his life. Now, the boy was already a part of his family and experiencing so many things with him.

“5!”

“4!”

“3!”

“2!”

“1!”

“HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!” The sky rumbled with the collective shouts of millions of Gaians all celebrating New Years Eve. And with their shouts came the barrage of pops and banging of thousands of fireworks going off.

The night sky exploded with lines of red and white. Only to be followed up by showers of gold, purple and green.

Elai could hear the soft gasp of awe coming from his charge. “Here’s to a new year for the two of us.” The acupuncturist said as he took a sip of his drink.

"To us," The satyr murmured, gazing into the brightly light sky.

Love Trap!
{February 11th, 2011}

Hey Jude, don't make it bad`

With surprising speed, a pale arm shot out to grab the ringing cell phone. Pressing the green call button, honey colored eyes flashed. He was tired of that song blaring out from his guardian's cellphone, all day with his man here in this blasted office with nothing but the sound of that stupid song to ease the silence. At first, he didn't mind but when it didn't stop ringing, that was when the irritation began to build up. After the first few hours, his reaction time in answering to the ringing cellphone had become nothing short of impressive. He blinked slowly as he answered the call. "Jezabroux's phone. Luka, can help you?" Combing his fingers through his downy hair, he craned his neck to get a better view of the door around the computer monitor.

"Loo...Luka? Jezabra? ...Not Josh?" The voice was oddly familiar. He could roughly recall a face, but no name was surfacing.

"… Luka on Jezabroux's phone. No Josh, must have wrong number."

"Is Prajna. Remember Prajna...Luuukaa?" Prajna. The star with the blue fire. Of course, how could he have forgotten? Hearing the star snicker on the other end of the line, Luka couldn't help but roll his eyes.

"… Oh… Hello Prajna…. Why did call Elai's phone and ask for a Josh?"

"What is Luka doing now? Is busy? Want...fun? Yes?"

"In Elai's office… want go home…. Fun? If fun is not blue fire then yes… Why Prajna?"

"Blue fire? ...Well, not important now. What is your man doing now? Is not close to you so Luka can speak to Prajna moreso?"

"Elai is in the other room, busy with needles and smelly old people. Speak Prajna of this fun."

"Namini is gone now but has been like...*siiighhh* all week. Prajna is tired of *siighhh* so try call Josh who is like kissing-friend of Namini like. But...call Luka instead. But it no matters. Jez-man will be fine. Can Luka trick well?"

"Yes. Luka can be very tricky Prajna. So, does Prajna want Elai for Namini stop *sigighhhh*?"

"Hmmm yes, would be good. Luka has heard of the *sighh* yes? Is very annoying yes?! Does Elai do-- ahem..ah. Oh! Can Luka get Elai to go to the animal place? On ...Saturday? Twelven-noon yes?"

"Feh. Elai does not stop *sssiiiggghhh* since frozen building on TV. Animal place…..? Does Prajna speak of zoo? Saturday, noon… Yes. We will be there Prajna."

"Good, yes, zoo. Oh, Luka, make sure wearing nice things. Prajna does not let Namini be ugly in public. If Elai and Luka is meeting, wear clothes. Yes. Adieu to you."

"Elai always dress nice, as do I. Yes, yes. See you on 12 of Saturday at zoo Prajna. Talk with Prajna later, bye."

Just perfect, now it was all a matter of convincing Elai to take him to the zoo. It couldn't possibly that hard. Pressing the red end call button, he slid out of the large office chair and headed for the clinic room next door. There was no way the man would refuse to go to the library if some old lady agreed with him that the zoo would be a perfect place to go for an 'educational lesson.'

One, Two, Play With Me Another Melody.
{June 3rd, 2011}

“Alright Luka, we’re going to try the same song from the top. Remember, keep the jitter in your fingers!”

”Mhm! I know I can do it this time.”

“Alrighty Luka, I’ll start the countdown. And a one, and a two, and a three!”

The upbeat jittery tones of an old swing dance song began playing throughout the Ferenan household. The notes were colorful, dancing their way throughout the rooms of the house and lighting up the walls. It was a drastic change compared to the usual quiet atmosphere of Nigel and Liselotte’s home. Instead of the usual quite drone of TV news channels or Liselotte’s droning on the phone, the house was alive with the sound of 1930s swing dance. Even on the walls, it seemed as though the shadows of the room’s furnitures were joining in.

“Yes, Luka, yes! This is it m’boy!” Liselotte let out a joyful cackle. “Come Nigel, dance with me! It’ll be like when we were still dating!” Sliding out the bench from beside Luka, Liselotte glided across the room to her husband’s ottoman. “Come now, Nigel! It’s been years, lets dance.” She coaxed, pulling her husband’s hand.

“Feh. You know I only ever danced to keep you happy. I hope you can still keep up old gal.” A frivolous twinkle in his eye, he wrapped his arm around Liselotte’s waist and pulled her to the center of the room.

As the two of them moved across the worn wooden floors, it was clear that the two were already back in a world of their own. Oblivious to Luka and Elai, oblivious to everything but the music and one another. Nigel led her across the floor with ease, spinning Liselotte with grace and even throwing her into the air as if they’d dance just yesterday. For a man in his 70s, Nigel was surprisingly spry and Liselotte was no standing twig either. There was fluidity and harmony in their movements, the result of years of dancing together.

As the song came to an end, Liselotte and Nigel fell into their chairs. “That was great Nigel, again mein lieber. Wieder!” She shouted, laughter cutting through her words. “Luka mein Kind, again! Play Viper for me mein lieber.” Getting back on her feet, she began pulling Nigel with her.

”One… Two… Three…” Taking a deep breath, the Frei’s fingers danced across the keys. His brows furrowing as he struggled to maintain the pace Liselotte had stressed. It was a struggle, a challenge, but a great one. Even from his seat on the bench, he could tell how much Nigel and Liselotte were enjoying this. How much he was enjoying this.

Sitting at the dining room table, Elai couldn’t help but crack a smile at his parents dancing. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen them dancing, or his mother so coherent. But, he did know that today would be the last time that he would see them smiling so happy for a while.

Twang.

Luka flinched as his finger hit the wrong note. He still needed more practice before he’d be able to play Viper as well as some of the others Liselotte had shown him. ”Oma, let me play something else for you.“

“It’s quite alright Luka, I think it’s better if I go lay down for a bit actually. I’m starting to feel quite dizzy.” As she finished her words, Nigel and Elai were immediately at her side. “I’m sorry mein Kind.” Liselotte gave Luka weak smile as Elai carried her away.

Luka stared at the keys, and as he reached to cover the piano, he felt Nigel’s strong hand on his shoulder.

“Don’t stop playing boy. You’ll make Lottie sad. She loves listening to you play. You remind her of when Elai was younger.”

Not saying a word, Luka began to play one of Nigel’s favorites. Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C Major, the very song Liselotte had played when Nigel had first spotted her those decades ago.

As the soft notes echoed through the house, from his seat Luka could hear the gentle sobs of Liselotte while in her bed and the even softer tears of Nigel from his sitting room.
