27 november MASS SD Elke dies.
Awareness was slow to come; when she finally woke up, she wished she hadn't.
The room was filled with smoke. She knew what that meant from years and years of fire safety lessons and endless drills: Something was burning. Elke rubbed her eyes, sat up and looked around; she hadn't lit any fires. She didn't even have a candle in her room. Her pajamas were even non-flammable, even though that was a little bit dorky. So she pulled the collar of her top over her mouth--you were supposed to do that, right?--and slid off her bed. The floor was disturbingly warm, not burning, but warm. She tried to ignore it as she put on her boots.
Didn't the warm floor mean that the source was below her?
No, she assured herself, it didn't. It didn't; Fallon had just left something in the oven, and everything would be fine once she got outside. Elke laced up her boots, but didn't bother to tie them. She wasn't going far. Just down to the first floor to get Avery and then outside. Giselle would be waiting; everyone would be safe, even warm, because if the dorms were burning that was a big warm fire, wasn't it? Of course everything would be fine. It always was.
She stood up, wiggled her feet better into her boots, brushed her hair behind her ears and looked around. It wasn't smart to stay, but... All of her things were here, and for a moment she paused, staring at her things. The laptop, her stuffed animals, her coat thrown sloppily over the back of her chair. Oh. It was cold out, wasn't it? She couldn't quite remember --
Elke stepped out into the hallway, hissing at the heat on her hand. The doorknob burned her palm, but there would be firemen outside. They could take care of things like burns, easy. She'd be fine. Maybe have an interesting scar to tell stories about at home - Yeah, Voirrey, I escaped a burning building!
Oh, it would be so nice to go home...
She was standing on the first floor, in the hallway. Really she had to get to Avery, and then she'd go. It'd be fine. But she couldn't quite make herself move. Her head felt... foggy. Strange. And it was hard to breathe. Underneath her feet, the floor creaked, a slow and cavernous moan. That should mean something to her, Elke knew, but what? What--
Her stomach dropped into her feet as the floor beneath her gave way, one startled scream wrenching its way out of her before she crashed into one of the dining hall tables, one searing pain through her right leg. Elke looked down, utterly confused, at the broken limb. What was happening? This wasn't right, she was supposed to be fine. Everyone was. She continued to stare as the leather of her boot began, slowly, to blacken. To curl in on itself, and then... It felt like someone was tickling her, and she laughed, choking on the air she kept trying to breathe. The gentle feeling turned to pain; the pain was agonizing; she couldn't breathe, and the hurt kept traveling. She could see her exposed skin, her hand where she was trying to protect the broken bone, bubbling.
Elke began to scream.

Virgo didn't quite know how to power down from this state. It seemed like you were supposed to do something along the lines of imagining yourself as your human self again, but she was kind of... afraid. What if she ended up a monster again? Hero would shoot her, and that would be just plain terrible. Virgo couldn't imagine having this exalted form, this clear feeling of rightness, and going back to that empty, wrong-seeming form again. It couldn't be borne. She wouldn't bear it!
Eventually, though, she allowed herself to be convinced to 'power down'. The green glow faded; her green dress changed into an untattered uniform again. Her shirt was still bloody, her hands still rather dirty, and her hair felt as grungy as before, but she was clearly no longer a monster. Healthy olive-toned skin: She smiled, her face lighting up in the darkness. It was time to sleep, Hero had explained stiffly; clearly the Princess could handle everything just the way she was told she could. Oh, Elke would do her best to take care of the Princess; so would Virgo. Everything had come from the Princess--well, Serenade, as it were. They were the same person, the same was as Elke was Virgo and vice versa. Weirdly, though, Hero didn't have such an alter-ego. Apparently she guarded Serenade because she had sworn to Jude Lawson--who had not, apparently, died from bacterial meningitis--that she would watch over the younger sister. That was a good thing. Having help from outside the tiny, tiny, tiny circle of senshi would be great.
In return, she had explained what she'd seen in her wanderings; the meeting with Giselle, encountering Sue, all of the various strangenesses she had experienced. The weird black-out she didn't mention, because there was really nothing to say. She couldn't remember any of it. Except for the blood, of course, that was uncomfortable to mention to anyone, even herself.
With a furtive look, she whispered, "Virgo power, make-up!" With a feeling that she had formerly associated with learning a new language or taking an amazing picture, Elke became Virgo again. She gazed at her gloved hands, at the little golden accents--were those art deco stalks of grain?--picked at the lovely gossamer green fabric of her dress. It felt so right, so perfect, to be like this. The responsibility hadn't quite touched her yet, lost in the complete and total awe of being, once again, alive. Of being whole. It was like this entire time, Elke Arma had been just a chrysalis for Sailor Virgo, senshi of innocence. What powers came with innocence? Who knew!
Virgo tilted her head back, looked around at the room lit by the green glow of her own self. It couldn't be dark like this. She'd never be alone in the darkness again. "I'm my own nightlight," she whispered.
Oh, she wanted to... go out and experiment! Find out what this power surging through her limbs meant. Virgo felt like she could fly. But that would have to wait.... if not until tomorrow, til sometime soon. She wanted to explore it all as much as she could. It would be... amazing. Perfect.
Maybe she and the Princess could go out tomorrow...

The more she thought about it, the more monstrous this place seemed.
First there was Giselle, monstrous and fearful, stepping so close to her and then snapping backwards, as if awakening from a trance. Then there was the encounter with Zeke and Sue, which had ended... poorly. Poorly was a good word for all she remembered of it. Well, she supposed it was. The vodka bottle to the face hadn't really hurt too badly, in fact, it had barely hurt at all. It had just been time-consuming to pick out of her face.
Then she had found Avery, at long last. Avery, Avery, Avery--first in her heart, always first in her heart. But he didn't want her near him. For her own protection? He'd tried to hold off so she could run. He had told her he loved her. But he'd accused her of not feeling the same for him, and she thought she had explained it so well. Without Avery, there was no Elke. She supposed that, instead of getting weepy as she was, she could do something. She could talk to someone. She should go back to the home base and check in with her Princess and with Hero. That would be what a responsible, good sailor senshi would do--she supposed it was. It might be. She'd never been a senshi before.
Maybe she should make a rulebook.
Still, there was so much wrong here. Lucas had seemed even stranger than before, when he'd been looking around for a key. And she had blacked out. Blood all down the front of her shirt. Now she'd even lost her only weapon, the first index of the encyclopedia.
Finally, Virgo stopped running and let herself be Elke again. She should go back to base, she should... grab Serenade-as-Chronos and ask her to help with fulfilling Avery's request. Why would he ask that of her, anyway? Kill him? Kill her Avery? He should know that it was as likely as the sun rising in the west.
She couldn't deny something had changed in him. Her Avery would have never, ever eaten a kitty. Not in front of her. Nor would he have hurt her, not ever--her wrist, the forming bruise, belied that. Maybe these zombie-creatures weren't actually her classmates, maybe they were just fakes. Monsters, real monsters.
No, she couldn't think that. Chronos, the princess, had thought Elke was still a person. She had saved her from that terrible fate of being a monster. Elke had to hold on to the same belief that Serenade had. It was kind of jarring to realize that her unshakable optimism had been shaken. That maybe the world wasn't always as rose-colored as she had thought. Inconceivable. Totally strange and confusing. But maybe not everything could be salvaged here.
Wouldn't stop her from trying. No, Elke could never, ever stop trying.
She still felt like crying, though.
