Awkward Bonding (Ellie Spectre)
Word Count: 1,028

After a long afternoon of eating Mexican food with a relatively new friend, heading to the mall by foot, and purchasing some new clothing, Ellie was about ready to head home. However, there was one more thing on her "to do" list for the day. One step at a time, she made her way closer to one of her favorite hangouts: Hank's Garage. The head honcho, Hank, would be there balancing the books, and Phil would probably be working on his newest project, his new motorcycle.

Being the regular and family friend she was, Ellie didn't even bother with the front door and went in through the back entrance (aka, the garage portion). Strangely enough, the garage was completely empty. None of the machinery was on, the lights were out, and most importantly, there was no red-head Phil there working on a motorbike. The blonde's lips sunk a bit from a light smile into a straight line. This was not what she had been expecting at all. She waited for a bit for her golden eyes to adjust to the lack of light, then she made her way through the garage to another door.

This door led to the main building. Holding her bag to her side, she walked in and looked around the shop. It was also unlit. However, from there she could see that Hank's office light was on. With the idea that maybe Phil was in Hank's office and getting talked at, she eagerly walked over. As she entered through the doorway, she knocked on the door to signal that she was there. It took her maybe 3 seconds to realize maybe she shouldn't have knocked. There was no Phil, but there was Hank. The middle-aged man was slouching over the paperwork on his desk, his glasses nearly sliding off his nose with how deeply his nose was into his work.

Her knock, however, was enough to cause the man to look up from his desk. With a smile, he greeted the girl with a corny "My, oh my! Look at that weed that sprouted up in my doorway!" He chuckled at his own joke, though Ellie did not do the same. Leaving his work on his desk, he stood up and walked over to the girl.

Hank wasn't a short guy, but at the same time, Ellie was not a short girl. She was just shy of his height, and as her dad liked to tell her, she was probably still growing. Not wanting to let on that she wasn't in the mood to talk with Hank specifically, she gave her usually cheery "Hey, Hank!"

"You know, every time I see you, you seem taller, Ellie! You'll make a mighty handsome girl when you get to 6 feet!" Once more, the raven-haired man chuckled in what seemed like an uncomfortable tone. And once more, the blonde girl didn't. He seemed eager for conversation, for he then asked some of the basic questions you could ask a teenage girl. "So, how's school doing? Are the parts I donated to the school bein' put to good use?" Though his words were quite casual, his tone seemed a bit distanced, and his posture held a very "proper" feel to it.

Fortunately for Ellie, she was used to how awkward Hank could be. "School's the same as usual. Nothing too exciting has happened since the terrorists." Of course, Ellie, also being Sailor Iris, now knew the truth to that "terrorist" attack at her school. It was hard to believe a Youma could cause all that damage. The blonde girl had stood in the rubble that was left from the classroom. However, Ellie knew that if she mentioned it was a monster, Hank would have thought that she, herself, was a terrorist. Straight-laced Hank believed the whole media take on terrorists.

The mention of the terrorists seemed to push Hank into asking "You aren’t hanging out with the wrong crowds, right?"

"Yes Hank." The girl couldn't help but look around the room, since she was a bit disinterested in talking with the store's owner right now. "Hey, do you know if Phil's coming in today?"

The man's expression went from pleasant to slightly annoyed upon the mention of his less-than-stellar employee, Phil. "Oh. Phil," he stated flatly. "I believe that lazy, no good bag of bones mentioned something about having a date today. Not going to show up today. I just can't understand how a young guy like that can't understand a simple thing like a good work ethic! Or how any girl could like such a guy!"

Ellie coughed at this statement. She was used to him talking down about Phil, and she was quite used to him forgetting that Phil was still Ellie's friend.

"Oh!" Snapping out of his minor (yet unenthusiastic) rant, Hank turned to Ellie with a smile. "Any girl except you, Ellie." Once again, his uncertain laughter followed his statement.

The blonde girl was quite a bit tired, so all of Hank's awkward mannerisms were starting to get to her. Hoping to leave before she was just angry, she lifted up a hand and waved. "Look, Hank, I gotta get goin'! Dad's gonna be gettin' home early today. I was just hopin' t'catch Phil really quickly t'show him the things I bought. I guess I'll see ya later!" She offered a grin, hoping that maybe her dad's friend would get the hint.

"Oh, okay then, Ellie!" He looked as if he wanted to pat her on the shoulder, but Hank was a very awkward man, especially when it came to dealing with women of any sort. Without another word, he went back to his desk and eased himself back into his chair. He still had lots of work to do.

Ellie walked out of the small room backwards, then bolted as quickly as she could to get out. Sometimes Hank would get back up and try to start ANOTHER conversation. On the walk home, she couldn't help but hope that one day, she'd own her own garage and NOT turn into what Hank had. That would take all the fun out of her dream.

What a Pain in the Back (Ellie Spectre)
Word Count: 633

After her battle with perhaps the toughest of all Youma (or at least, toughest she had met so far), Ellie was more than tired. She was feeling flat out sore. No perfect victory today. If it hadn’t been for the stray Sailor Scout, Sailor Metis, she would have been at the Minotaur Youma's mercy.

She had played it cool as she fled the scene, but now the girl was really feeling it in her back. No longer a Sailor Scout of justice, but a regular girl, she walked home as casually as possible. Yet her hand, out of instinct, was pressed firmly against her back, attempting to soothe the pain with pressure. It wasn't working at all, but she could try.

As she hobbled up the walkway to her house, she could see a familiar face sitting on the steps. She smiled, and even while clenching to her back, she still tried to make things sound like they weren’t a big deal. "Crap! Totally forgot y'were comin' over, Jared! Sorry fer th'wait!" The blonde girl chuckled to the boy with the matching color of hair as if there was nothing wrong.

However, Jared was not such a fool.

"What the hell did you do to yourself, Ellie?! I was worried sick, and now you come up like a train wreck to your house?!" He got up from his spot and practically stomped up to the girl. His eyes glared at her sharply, not out of anger, but out of worry.

Ellie had stopped in place for one moment, but then rather suddenly began to walk towards the door, as if she was completely ignoring his voiced concerns. "Get yer *ss in th’house, and we can play whatever game y'brought over t'day." Though her step still had a spring in it, the whole charade looked awkward thanks to that hand on her back. Upon reaching the door, she unlocked it and swung the door open. She marched in, casually glancing back to see her friend stomping in behind her. Playing ignorant, she asked "Ya have a bad day or somethin'?"

Jared glared at the girl once more, and hoping to get his point across, he slammed the door shut. "Cut the f*ckin' act, Ellie! What the hell did you do to yourself?!" In a swift motion, he pinned the girl against the wall, as if trying to corner her for information.

The girl let go of her back and was pushed up tightly against the wall. "Ungh," she grunted out in pain, unable to hide this aspect of the problem. Cringing at the sudden surge of pain running down her spine, she started to slump a bit before catching herself in the middle of her moment of weakness. She grinned weakly at her friend. "So I got hurt, big deal."

Though she seemed to be casually just standing there pinned against the wall against her will, her mind was suddenly going a mile a minute. How was she really supposed to explain this?

It seemed like this was the answer her friend was looking for. He backed up again to a reasonable distance, allowing for room to breathe again. "Don’t worry me like that." He began to walk towards the living room, not looking back at the girl for a moment.

Despite all of her lack of femininity, Ellie was still a girl. She took in a deep breath to calm herself slightly and awkwardly edged her way off the wall. Yet another day had been ruined by this Sailor Scout business.

"You d**k! Next time ya do somethin' like that, I'm kicking you in the balls!" she shouted as she made her way to the TV. She'd worry about all this Sailor Scout crap another day. Now, it was time to play videogames!

Bogus News (Ellie Spectre)
Word Count: 776

One of the rarities in Ellie's life was a normal family dinner. Both Mom and Dad were home for once, so they actually sat around their somewhat cluttered dining room table and ate while watching television. Mom, despite her many talents at multi-tasking, was not a very established cook.

Tonight's dinner was a frozen pizza she had put in the oven for too long and managed to char slightly. Neither Dad nor Ellie dared to point out such a flaw on their pizza, otherwise the wrath of Mom would tumble down on them. Both swallowed back their pride and ate their pizza one crunchy bite at a time.

Despite the meal being somewhat ruined, the conversation was quite pleasant. It had bounced around from school and work, to afternoon activities, new friends (or as her father tended to phrase it, "new boys") she had met, and then randomly to soccer. In the middle of the conversation over which team would do the best this coming season, the TV announced "This just in," which usually meant something important for the family to pay attention to. All three heads turned to face the television and listen.

"Sailor Nea is on the prowl, outing senshi as mass murderers! Destiny City is outraged by the Sailor Senshi, formerly suspicious, but generally recognized forces of good, showing themselves to be nothing but petty villains! The police now chase every Sailor Senshi they lay eyes on!"

As the announcement played through the news, a video of an orange haired girl with pigtails in what seemed like a Sailor uniform. As she seemed to rat out the other Sailor Scouts, both of the adults in the room seemed to grow more serious. And Ellie, mentally, was growing rather pissed off. She was also a Sailor Scout, and aside from the monsters, the Youma, she had never killed anyone in her life. Thinking back, she did acknowledge that she nearly beat the crap out of some petty thief, but beating the crap out of someone is not the same thing as killing. In her mind, the difference was completely black and white.

Out of the three, the girl’s mother was the first to talk. "Wow, it's hard to think that it isn't even safe to go out anymore. I didn't want to think that such young kids could do so much harm." Her voice was filled with disbelief, but it seemed to be wavering into an understanding that what she saw on the television was the cold and hard truth.

Ellie's father was the next to venture a response. "I bet those kids just needed some good parenting! Then they wouldn't have to resort to this sort of lifestyle." Despite the strong statements, Dad was far from living by example in this case. He and Mom were far from being "Parents of the Year." When they were around, they were quite wonderful (though Mom could grate on Ellie’s nerves faster than her Dad). However, they were rarely around, so their 16 year old daughter was able to get away with nearly anything she wanted to.

Fortunate for them, Ellie was a good kid. Otherwise, she probably could have easily gotten into sex, drugs, and even get into a real biker gang if she wanted to. The worst Ellie did was drive around without a license.

Without even thinking about her parents’ positions on the subject, Ellie just blurted out "News is fulla' crap!"

Both of her parents didn't quite glare at her, but they were looking at her with rather intense stares. With an undertone of disbelief, her mother started "You... y-you are entitled to your own opinions, Elenore, but at the same time, I think both your father and I are just looking out for your safety."

Had her mother not called the blonde girl by her birth name, maybe she would have just nodded her head politely. However, the use of "Elenore" meant that her mother was angry. And two could play at that game.

"Whatever," she grunted out sourly.

Mom's eyebrow perked up sharply at her daughter's tone. Her own voice grew sharp as she pointed out "We just want you to be safe, dear. We worry about you!"

Leaving the remains of her charred dinner at the table, Ellie promptly got up and stomped to her room. Before she slammed her door shut, she shouted out "The pizza was crap tonight!!"

And SLAM! Leaving a now bewildered mother and an agitated father in the dining room, it was obvious that the "normal" family dinner had ended in a less than stellar fashion.

Both Mom and Dad shared their sentiments.

"...Teenagers."

Never Knew Life was so Fragile (Ellie Spectre)
Word Count: 861

Ever since that day, the usually energetic girl was practically a walking zombie. She was normally so full of life. Everyone noticed. Her mother and father noticed, Hank and Phil noticed. Jared definitely noticed right away, and immediately wanted to know who had caused his friend to become so withdrawn. Even Zuniga noticed, despite being kept busy with soccer practices.

Ever since Ellie had gotten that atrocious bruise around her neck, she seemed so different.

Zuniga, in all of his wisdom, decided to see what was the matter. The raven-haired boy rarely got a break from soccer. However, he decided to ditch practice for one day to see if he could take his girl to her favorite Mexican restaurant. He knew Jared could be overbearing about this sort of stuff. In comparison to Ellie's other main dude, Zuniga was a hippie.

"Soooooo..."

Even now, as the two sat across from each other in the restaurant, the girl seemed like a husk of her former self. Zuniga's tan fingers reached out for some tortilla chips and he crunched on them between his teeth, all while looking the girl over. She'd normally be all over the menu, bragging about how she was going to get the spiciest thing on the menu. Instead, the girl was staring at the menu as if it was a foreign language. The boy's lips twisted into an uncertain expression before he pushed the little plastic basket of chips aside.

"Look, chica! What's the matter? You haven't been yerself lately! It's not right for you to be this way! Come on, chica. Tell me, what's on your mind?"

Blankly, the girl stared ahead of her, but even this simple question seemed to bring back an experience she had been reliving over and over and over again since the day it had happened.

The girl had woken up in the dump, a fog finally seeming to clear from her head. Her throat hurt, and as she slowly began to move in an attempt to get up, she could feel something heavy draped over her body. Her golden eyes would be met by the dulled and dead gray eyes of the man she had failed to save. In a panic, Sailor Iris pushed the body off her with a thud and pushed herself away from the unfortunate victim. Her body began to shudder right then and there, for she knew what had happened. Someone died because she failed.

"Come on, chica!" Zuniga verbally nudged again, his brown eyes watching her steadily.

The blonde didn't even look up, but her voice finally attempted to get this off her chest. "H-have you ever f*cked up? Like, really f*cked up?" Her voice sounded so dry in comparison to her usual tone, and she didn't even look up at her friend.

A fuzzy brow lofted slightly. Leaning in towards the table a bit, the boy ventured to say "Everyone messes up from time to time, Ellie."

This was not a satisfactory answer for the girl. "No! I mean really f*cked up!" Her voice paused for a moment, as she mentally tried to grasp for a way to explain this correctly. "...like... 'ya caused yer team t'lose the championship' kinda f*cked up?"

Sports analogies were always super effective with Zuniga. Almost like the wind got knocked out of him, he fell back against the cushions on the backing of his seat. He looked completely stunned as he voiced his current thoughts: "Woah... that's heavy, man..."

The blonde girl ventured forward, still trying to piece together her own emotions. "...I don't know what t'do, man. I don't know if I can handle th'pressure. I... I'm thinkin' of quittin'..."

Now, Zuniga didn't even know what his friend would be quitting (she was so vague, what the hell?!), but with a passionate thump of his hand against the wood table, he sternly said "No! Only a p***y quits! That's just takin' the easy way out. Yer better then that, Ellie! I mean, if it's somethin' ya like doin', then quittin' after one time of messin' up is just stupid!" By this time, he had noticed that several of the other customers in the restaurant were looking at him. Sliding his hand back to himself, he coughed, then continued. "Look, chica. Ain't gonna tell ya what t'do. I think ya shouldn't give up on whatever it was you were doin'."

For the first time, the girl had enough strength to look up to her friend. With a smile on her face that seemed closer to the real her, she uttered a quiet "Thank you, dude!" Apparently that was the kick in the pants the girl needed to return to herself for now. She glanced over the menu, now seeming able to comprehend what each item on the list was.

"So, chica... now yer going t'tell me about how ya got that bruise on yer neck, right?" Zuniga was smiling back at the girl, looking at the ugly purple-blue mark on her neck.

Not wanting to commit to anything, the girl just pointed at the menu and announced "I'm totally gettin' this... get the waiter so we can make our order!"

Grounded for Saving Lives?! (Ellie Spectre)
Word Count: 1,149

There were so many things that Ellie couldn't tell her parents. Nearly anything and everything dealing with school. Some of her hobbies also caused to her avoid telling the truth (it was so bogus that she couldn't ride on her bike legally yet). Yet the most recent thing the girl had to hide from her parents was perhaps the hardest thing to hide.

Ellie no longer just had the simple carefree life an average teenager anymore. Instead, she was also Sailor Iris now, defender of justice (or something like it) and Senshi of Rainbows.

Try explaining that one to your parents. The tomboy knew that she'd probably be sent to some counseling, maybe even sent to jail by being in association with the terrorists. It had happened twice, where the girl had put herself at risk to save the lives of others. Certainly, injuries hurt like hell, but there were those moments where she could say "I did somethin' that made a difference!" Riding a motorcycle around illegally at night didn't exactly leave that same sort of accomplished feeling. Even after a bitter defeat, Zuniga had talked some sense into her. She enjoyed being able to kick a little bit of monster a**. It felt good to make a difference.

~

It seemed awfully strange to have her parents home again. Ever since the girl had started up this Sailor Scout business, it seemed as if both her mom and dad made an effort to be around more. Was it really that noticeable a difference for them as well?

Mom was fussing around in the kitchen, working on dinner for that evening, and Dad was on the couch reading over some magazines that had stacked up on the coffee table. Ellie was at the dining room table, working on some homework that needed to be finished for her math class. The teenage girl was huddled over it, as if trying to not let anyone else see her work, yet it was a vain attempt to hide that nasty bruise around her throat. Every so often, the girl glanced up, her golden eyes dancing over to her father on the couch, then darting towards the kitchen where her mother was at. Despite the hustle and bustle in their lives, everything seemed too quiet.

The girl's father eventually finished up his reading and folded his magazine back closed, casually tossing it onto the pile obscuring the coffee table, then walked into the kitchen. He stood up and made his way towards the dining room table. He momentarily leaned over his daughter as he passed, then entered the kitchen. Normally, he would have been fawning over his girl doing her homework like she should have been. Yet today, he said nothing.

I guess I'm in deep sh*t now she mentally noted as she glanced towards the kitchen. She could hear faint murmurs of her parents talking, but the individual words could not be so readily deciphered. Everything was way too serious. After a couple of minutes staring at the kitchen, the sound of the voices ceased. In an attempt to look innocent and not get caught trying to eavesdrop, the blonde girl quickly tried to make herself look busy by writing some random numbers on her homework sheet.

Both her mother and father walked out of the kitchen, single file. Both seated themselves down at the table and looked towards the girl.

"Elenore," her mother verbally approached the girl.

In turn, the girl couldn't help but grit her teeth a bit. It was going to be a serious talk. Her birth name was being used. She looked up from her homework with a vaguely forced smile, setting her eyes as politely as she could manage upon her mom. She sat up properly, since being sprawled over the table would probably make this conversation messy. "Yes? I was tryin' t'finish m'homework!"

The adults at the table looked to each other, and the woman of the pair sighed. It wasn't one of those sighs of relief, but rather a heavy one filled with regret. "Your father and I have talked, and we decided that you should start spending more time at home." She paused to look at her husband, who nodded in agreement. "We would like to know where you are at so we can make sure you are safe, sweetie." Her mother smiled, as if trying to sell some sort of sales pitch. "We don't want you going out without talking to us first." Once again, the girl's father offered a nod of the head, to show that he fully supported the words of his partner.

This was such a foreign thing for the girl, that for a moment, she was struck dumb. She sat there, staring at her parents, her bruise around her neck practically glaring at the two adults. It took a couple minutes of silence before the girl could find her voice again.

"Th'f*ck?!!" She took a deep breath in and looked somewhere, anywhere else other than at her parents. Her eyes felt like they were rolling around aimlessly, but eventually they returned back to her mother's face. "Are... are you groundin' me?!"

Nobody answered. Not her mother. Not her father.

"Yer groundin' me?!!" she repeated, anger and disbelief beginning to bubble up on each horribly pronounced word. The girl stood up and literally beat her palm against the table, causing a rather loud thud to liven up the silence in the room. It was enough to cause her mother to jump slightly in her chair, and her father to lean in towards the girl's direction. His expression had gone from serious to protective, his blue eyes glaring in Ellie's direction. He didn't need to say anything, but in his silence he was shouting "Don't you question your mother!"

Rather quickly, the girl began to snatch up her homework materials, and once more beat her palm against the table, as if trying to get her point across. "This is BULLSH*T!!" she shouted angrily as she then passed both of her parents, stomping her feet as she narrowly passed them. It was unspoken as to the reason, but somewhere in the back of her mind, the girl knew it was 100% being a Sailor Scout's fault. She was getting grounded for saving people! She was getting grounded for being a GOOD PERSON.

As she stomped up the stairs, she bitterly complained "Th'f*ck! Don't even know why I'm gettin' grounded!" The stairs creaked and complained after each step the girl took.

From downstairs, both of her parents could hear when the door slammed shut. Her mother sighed, leaning forward and barely holding her head up off the table with her hand. Her father, just glanced towards the stairs. For the first time, he spoke up, but he voiced what everybody knew "Went better than I thought, but it still coulda gone better!"
