Burning Nightshade...
Do not cry little plant...
--------------------------------------------------------------

Mama Vivisali was not a young spring chicken anymore. Every chilly morning in which her bones woke her with deep bone deep ache reminded her of the fact. Artifacts that bestowed youth were wonderful but not exactly long lasting and such things had become harder and harder for her to find. Mama had friends to help her search such youth granting artifacts as well but lately those wells had sprung dry as well.

With avenues slowly closing around her, Mama had decided to have a friend send a bit of her blood and from that blood she would make a potion to grant herself youth that was eternal. The blood was special in that the friend that supplied it was a succubus. The theory was that Mama would be able to mix the blood with other components and thus, somehow, make it safe to ingest. The process was a bit iffy but Mama was determined.

That is what brought the elder woman to a patch of Deadly Nightshade that she had growing in her own private garden. Armed with sheers and protective garments donned she was carefully picking off pieces of the plant to use in the potion. Under her breath Mama hummed a soft melody to soothe the plant’s pain as she cut away it’s precious leaves and blossoms.

Nearby a small black and white mouse was perched on a forgotten bit of brick and watched the old woman curiously with its nose twitching and wiggling. Sometimes the mouse would sit up to clean its face...

Still humming, Mama reached for the next plant only to find that it had suddenly exploded into flames. With a startled shriek the elder woman stumbled back and protectively covered her face with her youthful hands in order to protect it from the sudden leaping tongues of the now flaming Nightshade.

When the old woman had enough of her senses to go about extinguishing the flame it had gone leaving behind a small curled up form upon the ground amongst the Nightshade that had been dropped in Mama’s panic.

Cautiously the elder woman moved toward the slightly smoking form of the child and then crouched next to it with an arched eyebrow...

O Dearest Magdalena...
What have we here...?
--------------------------------------------------------------

Mama Vivisali quietly moved forward and with effort knelt next to the coiled form of the small child with the lower half of a nightshade bud. Quietly the woman’s oddly young hands moved and brushed aside a lock of the child’s hair. Mama smiled softly at the prone form as she moved to lift her but the touch seemed to awaken the oddly shaped figure as a vine-like object wrapped around the wrist of the elder woman and dark purple eyes were opened and stared up at Mama.

“Ah, so it awakens,” Mama cackled softly and clucked her tongue against the roof of her mouth, “it is quite alright, child. It seems someone has bewitched my nightshade patch and that is why it seems you are here.” The old woman was no fool and though she could not see the one that did it she knew that was what happened. All the same Mama didn’t seem intent upon abandoning the child despite the shock that had occurred during the unveiling of the girl.

The girl’s vine-like appendage tightened against the wrist ever so slightly, a wordless claiming of who was now considered hers. She seemed content to not speak at all for the moment.

The old woman smirked as she moved to gently remove the vine coiled about her wrist so she may pick up the child, “I doubt you have a name, dear, so I will give you one,” Mama said thoughtfully as she cradled the oddly formed child in her arms. The old woman noted the bud-growth on the side of the head but said nothing about it for it only seemed to add to the child’s appearance. “I shall call you Magdalena. It is a good strong name for you. Hopefully it shall mold you in the coming days,” quietly the old woman hobbled toward the indoors, child in her arms. Later she would come back to reclaim the lost nightshade to dry for later use and then gather fresher specimens for other purposes...

Secret Agent Santa?
Who woulda guessed?!
--------------------------------------------------------------

It was strange trying to get a gift for a young girl that the old woman knew nothing about. Though Magdalena was the one that was supposed to be pondering the gifts to get for the Secret Santa it didn’t feel right to make a toddler make all of the decisions where gifts were concerned. Instead the older woman had the toddler pick out a some trinkets that a young girl might like and had her pick out a blanket and a lantern as well, after all every young girl needs light to guide her wandering feet. The biggest gift in the arrangement, an enchanted treasure chest, was picked out by Mama Vivisali herself. The old woman had uncovered it in her stores and worked out how it behaved and wrote a note to go with it so that the girl would know how the enchantment went instead of fumbling about blindly and probably hurting herself in the process due to magic gone awry.

When the gifts were delivered it was a bit of a relief. Magdalena seemed pleased with her choices and Mama Vivisali pleased in general that the young Nightshade girl seemed content to give instead of keeping to herself. Though the young girl did not quite seem to grasp the idea of Christmas just yet and Mama Vivisali wasn’t sure how to explain it other than a giving and receiving of gifts while being thankful for all the things and people around you all at the same time. After all what was more important that family?

A basket arrives just a few days short of Christmas, in the same manner as the basket that had originally arrived with the request to be filled. Many goodies are inside!

Quote:
The basket Maggie got would seem a bit empty, considering how many presents some people were getting, but the present inside was of decent size and the giver had already sent two 'harder to package' items already. Inside of a plain white box in the basket was a bunch of tissuepaper and....a harp?

It was a small, lap harp, made of a lovely dark stained wood, with strings and a few covers for one's fingertips and a bit of sheet music under it in the box. The object itself was rather pretty - featuring a patterned decoration of some wooden flowers, painted with a dark green vine and leaves, and a soft white belled flower. It had been picked out in the hopes that the girl receiving it might like the item or music. The giver had had the help of a sister, who - when the giver said something musical might be good on a hunch - assisted him in choosing the particular instrument. The name Magdalena had probably sounded a bit like Madelin to the children, but they didn't exactly know the difference between the two instruments and had guessed.

(IOU on art of the harp. The two pets to be sent were SSed there already :3)

Happy holidays!

A Lap harp?
For me?!
--------------------------------------------------------------

The gifts for Magdalena had come steadily, first were two living creatures to be the small girl’s constant, if they aren’t wandering or nosing about the premises and now a lap harp. When the nightshade girl had opened this particular gift her young eyes lit up her entire face as she reached and grabbed up the instrument her two vine-like green limbs moving to stroke at the strings in a manner that seemed quite experimental only to have a sweet, though slightly halting, sound issue from the instrument which caused Magdalena to gasp quite happily.

“I love it!” The small girl announced gleefully to her old guardian staring up at the aged face of the woman that cared for her.

Mama Vivisali gave a gentle laugh and nodded, “It is a most proper gift, my sweet one,” the woman said gently as she reached forth and gently patted the small girl’s dark hair. “Did you like all of your gifts thus far?”

“Yes!” came a happy response as her vine-hands stroked across the strings once again to produce a slightly less halting sound she wondered if Mama could play this instrument and she looked up at her guardian in askance.

Mama looked from the child’s questioning face and then to the harp and seemed thoughtful; an instrument like that seemed many lifetimes a stranger to her now. She pursed her thinned lips thoughtfully and then shook her head, “No child I cannot play such a fine instrument as well as I once could, but I’ll learn once more at your side, I promise.”

Magdalena made a happy keening sound and continued to practice on her own for a bit.

Old friends and new additions...
Backdated to: December
--------------------------------------------------------------

Nym quietly lingered over the small bed where the two children slept. One child had features of a vampire bat the other one had features of the nightshade plant that she grew and cultivated. The golden skinned woman sighed but smiled as she rubbed the side of her neck. It was odd how two children just suddenly appeared to her out of seemingly no where. Why was she suddenly so blessed? Usually she waited until she was 'young' again and formed a family and maybe had one or two of her own, this time she didn't even have to wait.

...Now she was probably young forever and it was possible that she wouldn't even be able to have one or two of her own. She still felt a lot of anxiety about having forgotten much of her craft during her 'transition' from old to young through the new method that she had devised using an old friend's blood. A hand went up to rub the side of her golden skinned face. Right now she'd settle for being able to change back to a 'normal' skin tone.

The hand went to her face to brush against the hair of the small batboy and then caress the side of the face of the nightshade girl. They were so precious so she'd count her blessings for now, while they are young; because she had a feeling she'd need this new found youth to keep up with them. When they get older they might not seem much of a blessing for all that it may entail.

Humming softly she began to wander back to her room here another young woman laid on her bed. She was glad that the succubus had lent her blood to the purpose even if it seemed to have come at a heavy price. Nym settled on the bed next to her best friend and closed her eyes with a small sigh. She was glad that Desdemona had come to her aid when she needed her dearest, oldest friend the most. Maybe she could talk the succubus into staying and helping out until she got to her full strength. With that thought hanging in her mind she fell into another deep dreamless sleep.

Dear Journal...
Nym's Journal Entry
--------------------------------------------------------------

Magdalena seems to enjoy that I have become much younger. I remember gazing at her young face and catch a glimpse of worry cross over her features when I was more aged than I am now. I am not sure if she has a concept or understanding of death yet but I think a small part of her still feared that one day I would not be at her side to guide her through life. She certainly would still have Daedalus and Jolie at her side and always will but she had grown used to me and my ways and would rather not be without me I think, haha.

She loves her auntie Desdemona I think, she enjoys the succubus’ motherly nature and seems to quite happily feed off of the attention given to her so long as she doesn’t have to share too much of it with her newly found brother, Nosferatu.

Yes she has a new brother as well, within a day or two of me achieving my youth I had gained yet another child. I do not know who or what conspired to give me yet another tot to take care of but ... I thank them for now. Though I wake up each day I dread the next little spat they will have but though they are often at odds there is a bond between them as if they sense a similarity betwixt each other and they cling to that bond.

No matter how badly Nosferatu makes Maggie cry she seems to forgive him each and every time it happens. It must be wonderful to share a common bond such as that...

To read and write...
Magdalena's Entry
--------------------------------------------------------------

User Image

Getting Maggie to focus on her reading and writing seemed a lot easier than it was teaching Nosferatu whose attention seemed to drift because he found the subject entirely beneath his notice. Magdalena eagerly took the pen in hand and wrote, studied, and asked questions about how and why the letter was formed like that. The questioning, Nym found, was the only maddening part about the whole experience because sometimes the woman didn’t have an answer for the girl and often found herself making up a story and hoping for the best.

Magdalena took each story as a kernel of truth and stored it within her mind as she mimicked the writings of the alphabet. When it came to spelling words the young girl seemed to have a bit of a knack for it. She only needed to be told once and she seemed to have it memorized for life, which was a good thing, a very good thing. The girl was as smart as a whip.

It made a certain amount of pride swell up in Nym’s chest not that she wasn’t proud of Nosferatu as well but it seemed different with Maggie, probably because the child was the woman’s ‘First Born’...

Tea parties and Vampires...
Sibling Time...
--------------------------------------------------------------

He wasn't sure how or even why this happened but he was sitting at the small table with a tea set in front of him wearing the frilliest and most flowery hat ever in existence. The brim was somewhat floppy and fell into his crimson gaze making him all that much more irritable. Across from him sat Magdalena pouring imaginary tea into his cup and the cup of their other playmates which consisted of various stuffed animals. Nosferatu tugged at his apron which he sloppily put on after talking his sister down from a dress, which was what she originally wanted him to wear.

"We done yet?" He asked in a surly tone as he sat there with his wings folded at his collar bone and his arms moved to cross over his chest.

Magdalena peered over her brother with an arched eyebrow for a moment or two as she gently set down the teapot and shook her head, "Not until you've eaten all of your cakes, drank some tea, and told me how delightful it was to walk down to the lake with your husband, Lady Vandermere."

He started and peered toward the door and witnessed the retreating tail of a certain succubus and he narrowed his eyes sharply. He knew he heard someone trying to hold back a chuckle. Nosferatu vowed to himself to get back at her and at his sister later. Oh he'd get them both.

"Fine," he grabbed the small cake their mother had made for them and uncouthly shoved it in his mouth, chewed sourly, and then grabbed the tea (which in reality was just water) and gulped down the small cupful and set the empty cup down and announced firmly, "it was great. Can I go now?" The hat was starting to annoy him severely as was the perfume that his sister had sprayed on the animals and him. The cloying scent was making him feel dizzy, the truth be told.

Magdalena sighed lightly and shrugged her shoulders, "Fine we'll play what you wanted to play," she now gave up, besides she had enough to blackmail him with for days. The shy young flower was becoming more assertive and sneakier as the days went on. While he sat there she had gotten pictures of him greeting the stuffed animals (on her command) in greeting while he was dressed as a 'proper lady' amongst other images with her toy camera (that worked and produced images as a real camera should). It was hard being 'sneaky' like that but she thought she managed it, though he did stare at her suspiciously after a couple of clicks....

Nosferatu gleefully stripped away the hat and apron and put his hands on his hips as he stared at her. What game should he get her to play that would make up for the demeaning moment that he had gone through here?

"We're gonna play pretend, and we are gonna play a game I call 'Vampire'. You are the damsel and I'm gonna bite'choo and drink your blood." Nosferatu announced. Sure the game wasn't a stretch of the imagination but if he got to bite his sister in vengeance he wasn't going to quibble with details.

Magdalena made an odd face at the proposal but allowed it, "Just don't bite so hard and let me hide!" she whined faintly wringing at her fingertips.

"Fair 'nough," the small batboy allowed as he turned, closed his eyes and ducked his head covering it with his wings and began to count. "Onnnnnnne. Twoooooooo...."

The nightshade girl fretted a moment before she made a strange hurried gait out of the room and to a hiding spot while her brother counted time away. It wouldn't take him long to find her, but she wasn't going to make it easy, either.

Dear Journal...
Nym's Journal Entry
--------------------------------------------------------------

She seems so much more mentally grown than her ‘brother’ Nosferatu. Then again the boy seems grown in different ways than she is. So I guess I will say that she is more ‘mature’ than her brother. That seems a better way to put it. While she seems to constantly poke around and get into things it isn’t quite the way same way that Nosferatu gets in trouble. For her it is simple curiosity and usually harmless to herself and those around her unless she gets impatient for answers.

The young girl always questions, constantly questions. Everything that is new or unusual she must know everything about it, every angle and ... it is driving me insane. She talks often of her small friend Lucien that we had met a while ago and often asks me when we can go see that boy again. Think the girl is a bit smitten by the boy.

One concern for me is her eyesight, it doesn’t seem as good as it once was, but maybe that is just me being a worrywart...
