(AARON AND MAGDALENA)

It was a brisk, early Saturday morning, and Aaron was not exactly pleased about being sent out of his snug bed at 7 AM to do the weekly farmer's market run, especially seeing as David had nothing better to do than go right back to his own warm bed right after dragging him awake and sending him off with a few tote bags. Everyone in their booths was bundled up with hats and scarves, and Aaron flattened his tail against his back as much as he could under his big coat for extra warmth.

Mentally, he recited the shopping list.
Five apples. Four green peppers. Ten tomatoes. Three large potatoes. Two ears of corn.

Sigh. Here was hoping he could find everything on his list quickly and scurry back to bed.

Magdalena had gotten distracted by something. She had gone along with her big brother, mostly at her Mother’s insistence and a bit of her own wanting to get out of the house. The small quiet girl hadn’t expected for the market to be so large nor had she expected to be so enthralled with inspecting a batch brightly colored freshly picked fruit that she would lose track of her brother, Daedalus. Furrowing her brow ever so slightly the diminutive and dainty looking girl began to move forward with large eyes gazing about somewhat anxiously for her brother.

She walked with this odd bounce-and-swish gait that was very distinctive. “Bro’er? Bro’er!!!” Magdalena called out lightly not really paying much attention until she bumped into a display and caused to knock over and bring the produce to a tumbling fall. The small girl squeaked, the farmer yelled, and the girl began to cry. A lot.

Aaron's eyes followed a ball of lettuce bouncing along in front of him, followed by several eggplants. Looking back to see where they'd come from, he saw a collapsed display and several very upset individuals.

Well now, this was a lot of excitement for an early morning...and much more Aaron's style. He headed over to the catastrophe, swinging his tote bag beside him briskly.

Most of the produce could be picked up easily; that was not the problem here. The issue at hand was the yelling man behind the stand and the crying girl surrounded by oranges. Aaron wasn't exactly the best with girls OR crying, but he was certainly better at them than the upset farmer seemed to be.

Looking at the farmer, he held up his hands. "Hi, I'll help you pick it up. Yelling isn't making it better, though, I think?"

Leaning down to the girl, he said,

"Hey, hey, it's okay, we'll get it cleaned up. What's your name?"

The farmer turned to the intervening boy with a small sneer and was about to say something in retort when he suddenly realized that the commotion that had begun had now attracted more than a few more disapproving stares from surrounding individuals since he had yelled at and upset a small girl. This day was turning out to be a fantastic disaster for the farmer. So the farmer-man grunted at the boy and began to clean up the rest of his (now bruising) produce. He’d have to mark everything down in order to get them sold. No good kids. Naturally the farmer accepted the offer of help from the boy and others.

Magdalena tearfully looked up at her savior with a bit of a sniff and a hiccup or two that had been caused by her sudden torrent of weeping. She bit back her tears and wiped the back of her hands against her eyes, “K..Kay. I am Ma..Ma...-hic-.. Maggie,” the girl said with a small sniff.

"Th...Thank you for saving me from the me...mean man."

Aaron outstretched his feathered arm down to the girl, smiling.
"I'm Aaron. Nice to meet you, Maggie!" He paused slightly, then turned slightly pink, a garishly obvious feature on his otherwise pale face. "A-and anytime. He shouldn't yell at you for just an accident, yeah? Let's help him put his things back."

A small hand reached up and grasped Aaron’s hand and with his help Maggie stood once more on the odd bud-like lower half that she had. She nodded and giggled faintly as he blushed. Somehow it made her feel better! She looked at the farmer and then at Aaron. As long as Aaron wanted to pick the stuff up she would help, otherwise the farmer was getting no favors from her! Thus the small girl nodded, “Okay, I will help you.” Magdalena said quietly with a faint emphasis on the word ‘you’ just so Aaron knew who this particular favor was for him.
