 The Evolution of Birthdays
Yet, Ellie never felt that way. Never really treated herself that way.
Part of it had to do with her upbringing. Her birthday was just another day in the Spectre household. Two parents that were always busy meant that her "celebration" would always have to wait for another day, a day that wasn't so busy. Ellie grew up understanding she was not the center of the universe. Her birthday, just like any other day, was another day.
At an early age, the tomboy had stopped feeling any sort of pleasure in announcing it was her birthday. When her teachers and classmates would announce it, the child would scowl. It wasn't a big deal, and they needed to stop making such a huge fuss about it.
Once middle school came into her life, it seemed as if all the buzz over birthdays had passed her by. She could live the day like it was any other day. Her closest friends knew that March 25 was a day to let Ellie be. It was her day, after all. If she wanted to just ignore the fact she turned one year older, that was perfectly fine! Other girls would fawn over the birthday balloon bouquets their friends got for them, and Ellie would just live the day like any other day.
It wasn't a big deal.
And then that darned cat came into her life.
She turned 17 that year when the cat, absolutely oblivious to how Ellie felt about birthdays, attempted to wish her a happy birthday. The tomboy, too proud to accept even the simplest of wishes, pushed the manx away. The cat was a bother for bothering her about a day that was just like any other day.
Yet when she turned 18, ********* seemed to forget the previous year's rejections. She made certain to wish her a happy birthday yet again. And once more, the feline was pushed away. Birthdays were stupid things, why did society have to insist they be these selfish, ego-centric days?! Leave her alone and go on living life as if it was a normal day!
When Ellie turned 19, the manx apparently was too dense to figure out the pattern. Another happy birthday wish, and another insistence that the cat leave her alone. If it were possible, she could have demanded the Mauvian take her birthday wishes with her.
Things changed when Ellie turned 20. She had been stuck in bed, thanks to her first attempts with purification. However, she remembered what birthdays used to mean to her in the Silver Millennium. There were rituals to go with the day, but the day wasn't about celebrating just oneself. It was about celebrating life. All life! Indeed, her parents, Mariengeld and Scepiet, had both thrown her a huge party at the Grand Hall. She had gotten dressed up, presenting herself more as a princess than a senshi. She had promised her parents and her people that she would fulfill her destiny as both Senshi and a Princess starting the next year.
And then she could never fulfill that promise. By the next year, her people were extinct and Sailor Iris had passed.
For her 21st birthday, things had gone down which made it difficult to even remember it was her birthday. Yet, somehow ********* still managed to remember. Still wished her a happy birthday. It mostly went ignored, but Ellie hadn't pushed her away.
It was today, for her 22nd birthday, that Ellie had gone into space in the wee early morning hours. She spent perhaps half a day there, ensuring she had done the ritual dance to mark her age, then spent her remaining time at the Grand Hall. She had found something over the past year that reminded her vividly of her life during the Silver Millennium.
The fabric had aged, so she didn't dare move it from its place, but the colors still somehow were as brilliant as they had been during the Silver Millennium.
Mariengeld's dress
It had been the Queen's dress that had been passed down to her upon her final birthday. Just staring at it brought pain to her heart, yet it brought so much hope as well. Her birthday had never been about herself. She had made it about her people and serving them. True, she didn't fulfill her promises to the Iridians, but after a couple years she had learned something from the memory.
It might have been a grim way to look at it, but Iris had decided she needed to live each year as if it was her last. She was gradually growing closer to outliving her previous incarnation, which was tragic in some sense.
Once she returned to Earth and to her own room, she returned to being just Ellie, rather than the glamorous Sailor Iris. She went back to living her own life, fussing in the garage on her newest project. The Spectrum was getting on in years, and after some point, repairs would no longer get her around in the city. Hank had found her a new bike that was anything but new. It would require much repair, and keep the tomboy occupied for hours.
At some point, the girl heard a familiar voice chirping up as it did every year.
"...Happy Birthday, Ellie!"
It wasn't long before she felt the furball at her ankles, rubbing up against her affectionately.
Rather than push the feline away, a hand came down and stroked her round sides.
"...thank you..."
No, it wasn't a day all about Ellie, it was just an ordinary day. Yet, it was now also a reminder that perhaps an ounce of gratitude was needed to show those important to you that they were what makes a birthday worthwhile.
