Whee, a park! 8D
Afterthoughts

Dear Journal,

I met a girl today. Yes, I like her, but as a friend, end of story. Her name's Takara Mitsuko. She's really nice, but a little... clumsy? I'm not sure, that's just the feeling I got from her. Anyway, she brought along her dog and her cat to the park. We happened to 'bump' into each other while I was relaxing on a comfortable bench. (Commoners seem to have rather comfortable places to sit, even if they aren't as nice as the ones at home.)

Anyway, she brought her dog, Alimet, and her cat, Razi, to the park with her. Alimet is a big golden retriever, while Razi is leagues smaller than him. They seem to get along well. Mitsuko and I talked for a while, and as it turns out, she's in a situation much like mine. Her parents want her to become a doctor. But unlike me, she actually likes the job that they've planned out for her. She agrees with me, though -no one should be forced to work at a job they don't like.

Mitsuko goes to Ouran, too. I really hope that it's a nice school. I'm going there tomorrow to check it out, and I should start school the next day. If I'm lucky, I'll actually be able to mingle with this school ad not stick out as much as I did last time. The last place I want to go is some boring school that my parents trap me in to get me to do what they want. This is my last chance -Journal, I really hope it works out.

See you later, I guess.
-Katsuo

Into the Labyrinth
Afterthoughts

Dear Journal,

Today was my first day on Ouran's campus. It's HUGE. Not surprisingly, I got lost in the hedge maze after my dad let me out to explore on my own. I found myself in the middle of the labyrinth after what seemed to be a long, long trial of twists and random turns, I finally made it to the center. What I found there -no, who I found there- was pretty interesting. Inside of the big gazebo covered in roses was this boy by the name of Kimura Satu.

He was there by himself, apparently trying to get some peace. Well, I messed that up pretty well. He and I talked for a while about school, what Ouran was like, and he promised to introduce me to a couple of students when we were both together. Apparently, there's this girl, Shirakawa Sai, who he knows. She apparently transfered in recently, too. Maybe I'll get to meet her soon.

Satu helped me escape the maze, and gave me a full-blown tour of the campus. Most of it, anyway. I think we'll get to be good friends. He's a nice guy.

Talk to you later.
Katsuo.

Yup, I'm in the right school!
Afterthoughts

Dear Journal,
All right, first day of school!

...Actually, it wasn't that interesting. There was only one important, interesting that actually happened. I met another guy, named Akira. He's in the same class as I am. I was wandering around again, trying to get my barrings when I met him. He was eating alone on a swing. He wanted to get some privacy -but apparently, I'm not very good at leaving people to their private thoughts. This is the second day in a row that it's happened. It's just a good thing that he didn't mind.

I ate lunch with him today, though I shouldn't really have been welcome. He was generous in letting me sit with him -I was getting hungry, even though I hadn't planned on eating at lunch. I ate with him, and we talked for a while. He seems to be a nice kid. I wonder if he knows Satu or Mitsuko... I should have thought about asking him that before. Oh well.

I'll write again soon.
Katsuo

My hair's too what?
"Tsu, you're going to get it cut. Not tomorrow, not next week, today, young man." His mother's stern expression visually answered his question of whether she was actually serious about this or not. Her arms were crossed, her feet firmly on the ground. She'd just gotten back from work, and hadn't had time to change yet. Her executive attire just made her that much more intimidating. As he stood there gaping at her, she refused to budge on her order. "Now, Tsu. I've already told the driver where to bring you, and the hairdresser already knows how short to cut it." The high-heel-clad woman turned away from her son to walk away and get back to business.

Katsuo had stood there for some time, merely staring at his mother in surprise and awe. It had taken him some time to snap out of his daze and respond to her. "Don't I even get a say in this?!" He burst out, anger flaming and full force now. "You're always telling me how to live, what to do! Can't I just make my own decision for once?!" He was infuriated. Neither one of his parents had even bothered to mention to him that he was getting his hair chopped off that day -most of it, anyway. His outraged question actually succeeded in stopping her. "No, you don't. We're only doing what's best for you, and if you'd trust your father and me, then maybe your home life would go a little smoother. We know what options are the ones to take, Tsu. So for once, could you trust our decisions?" She began walking away from him again.

"If you never let me choose, then whenever I have to make a decision for myself, I'll never be able to get it right." He commented once more to her receeding form, though it received no outward reaction. Sighing, Katsuo stomped toward the front door and the awaiting car.

---

A few hours later, Katsuo returned. His mother was waiting just past the doorway. Much to her dismay, something hadn't gone according to plan. "What happened?!" She asked with some frustration. His hair was indeed cut, but none of the hair surrounding his face was even remotely cut. Only the back had been trimmed. "What went wrong?" To this, she only received a shrug, after which the first year retreated to his room. Katsuo was content with his small victory he'd won today.

Immediately after her son disappeared Suzuma was at the phone. She was normally rather accepting and adapting when problems occured, but in this case... "Was I not specific enough? Why aren't his bangs cut?" She did her best to hide her confusion and anger, but she failed. Even over the phone her emotions were obvious. "He wouldn't let me touch them. It was either leave them be or cut off his fingers. Wouldn't let me call you. Your boy's got a knack for being stubborn, if you don't mind me saying." The woman in the mansion sighed. "Yes, I do. But thank you, I'll go talk to him now."

Hanging up, she went to her son's room, only to find the door locked and music pouring out. She pounded on the door in an attempt to get his attention away from the stereo. The music was muted. "You can cut the rest of my hair, but the bangs stay!" Inside of his room, he pouted childishly. "Fine, but as long as you refuse to get them cut, the rest of your hair's going to have to make up for it, Tsu!" If he was going to be stubborn, she would have a talk with his father about it. Doubtles he would agree to her solution. So long as Katsuo refused to have the front of his hair cut, the hair in back would be cut shorter and shorter. "Don't call me that!" Sighing with disappointment, Suzuma left to go back to her work. She wasn't going to deal with this now.

Ask me before you decide.
Katsuo hated this little detail about his family the most of all. Whenever there was a big decision to be made, all three of them would gather at a table placed in the center of his father's office. As a child, he'd been ecstatic to be allowed into his dad's secret room. Other than those meetings, he was never allowed to see what was going on. However, over the years, he'd realized what those 'conferences' were really about. Whenever they needed to have his complete attention -whenever they had to tell him something life-changing- he'd be summoned there. It was almost like bringing in a defendant after the trial had already ended. All that was left was to tell him the verdict. The reason he hated the meetings? He was always found guilty.

Too put it simply, he was less than happy upon being called into the room so unexpectedly. He arrived to find that the both of them were already seated and waiting. This wouldn't have been much of a surprise had he not seen his rarely-seen father sitting across from him, adjusting his glasses. The man was almost always working, so what had managed to pull him away from his oh-so-important schedule and back home?

Hands crossed in front of his face, Hirohito sat silently, waiting for his son to finally sit down. After the boy had sat down, he again adjusted his glasses so that they were well below his eyes. In truth, he didn't even have bad vision. They were just for show and to make him seem like a more imposing figure. It worked. In front of the blue-haired boy sat the one man stern and frightening enough to make him actually obey commands. He bit his lip and folded his hands over his lap.

"Katsuo." With one word, the slouching, uninterested lad snapped to attention and sat up straight in his chair. "Your mother tells me that you've been acting up again. Look at me when I'm talking to you, please." The teen's eyes wandered around the room -anything to avoid the man's petrifying stare. Hirohito sighed, his hand moving back up to his useless glasses. He quietly took them off and placed them on the polished wooden table before fixing his eyes on his son again and sighing. "What am I going to do with you, Katsuo? Are you trying to get my attention? Because if so, you've got it. Or are you just doing this out of spite?" Although he opened his mouth to say something, his concerned parent stopped him. "Whatever the case, it can't continue. You need to act appropriately, Katsuo. Each one of our actions reflect this entire family."

Knowing he wouldn't be able to get a word in edgewise without his father forcing him to stop, Katsuo waited for the man to pause to signal that he was finally finished talking. He fazed in and out of hearing Hirohito's winding speech. "...at school and at home. And so we've decided that in order to teach you how to respect people when necessary, you're going to help out around one or two of your classmates' houses during your free time." This comment automatically made Katsuo's attention fly back to the matter at hand. "WHAT?!" His hands pounded against the table as he pushed himself up. "You can't do this! Not only is it demeaning, but totally uneccesary! The last thing I'd want for my first job is to be a slave-for-hire to someone I barely know!" He ranted, leaving his position from his chair and walking back and forth.

"Enough, Katsuo." Hirohito said firmly, still resting in his seated position. His voice was stern enough to silent the reluctant boy and make him sit down once more. "This is what's best for you, and eventually, you'll understand. Just so you konw, for the moment, the family we've planned for you to work for is the Roberts family. Their daughter, Vanessa, is in class 1D at your school. You're excused." "Bu-" "I said that's enough, Katsuo." Biting his lip, he stood up and hastily walked for the door. It shut loudly behind him.

"Are you sure it was a good idea?" Suzuma frowned in the direction her son had left. "I think we were a little harsh."
"You mean I was, don't you?" Hirohito sighed. "It probably was, but you know he wouldn't have responded to anything less."
"I know... Maybe you were right."
A loud noise was heard from right outside the door. Before leaving, Katsuo smacked his head against the large wooden door once more.
"This sucks," he mumbled to himself, staring angrily at his shoes all the way to his room.

Close Friends, Fond Memories, and a Realization
His first year of high school was already almost over. In his mind, he still held onto his first day on campus, meeting Satu in the labyrinth, and each of the other students that he'd run into both on campus and off. Even if Ouran was a small school, it was as though everywhere he went, one of them was there, waiting for him to find them. Or maybe he was the one waiting... Whatever the case, unfamiliar warm feelings flowed through him when he returned home from school and secluded himself in his room once again. This time, however, he wouldn't just listen to music. He had something to keep him occupied other than the lyrics of the songs blasting from his stereo.

It was almost the end of the year. That meant one thing -yearbooks. He'd received his that day, and already, it was full of classmate's wellwishes and inside jokes that he might not even remember twenty years from now. He quickly flipped through the pages. There were tons of signatures and messages throughout the course of the book. There were even more than he'd remembered getting signed. Maybe somone he'd given it to had spread it to a few more people without his knowledge.

A few of his close friends had shoved their own comments onto the page full of class pictures. Only one had been egotistical enough to write 'You're so jealous' next to his own picture. That idiot. Katsuo thought to himself with a smile. When he signed Hayate's book, he'd be sure to write something clever. He had until tomorrow, after all. By then, he'd be able to figure something out, even if it wasn't as good a retort as it should have been. He flipped to his own picture to see that Hayate had continued his annoying ramblings. Had he been planning this since they met or something?

'Tsu-kun...' He could hear the other boy's annoying, disappointed voice already, even though it was just writing in the margins. 'I'm angry at your parents! D:< You weren't supposed to get a haircut! You were supposed to look like a girl until the end of the year, that way I could say something witty like: I hope you finally hit puberty so you can get those curves you've always wanted! But no, you had to go and get it cut! Next year, I expect you to have it grown out again, or I'll be forced to get you a wig! Or extensions!' I say again. Idiot. From the message to his picture there was a long arrow, avoiding pictures and weaving its way through the white spaces until it reached. 'Like this! -Yukimura Hayate' Was scrawled directly above it.

Another few pages, and through all of the familiar handwriting, he saw some that he'd never seen before. Whose writing was that? He read the message entirely before finally figuring it out. The tiny hearts should have clued him in immediatly.
'Katsuo-kuuun! <3

It was a great first year, wasn't it? I'm glad to have met you, yup! I hope we'll talk lots in our second year too! <33 We should do something fun with everyone during the summer too - I'll probably call and plan something, so you should be expecting that! <33 Anyways, thanks for being a great friend!

Takara Mitsuko ~ <333'
After finally finishing reading it, he realized that somewhere along the way, the blood had rushed to his cheeks. He felt its warm touch just beneath his skin. He was... Blushing? But why? There was nothing in the yearbook that could have made him feel embarassed, even Hayate's stupid antics. So what was it that had...

"Awww, how wonderful! My Tsu-kun's got his first crush!" Katsuo quickly turned to his door to see his mother standing in the doorway, pretending to be weeping with joy. "DON'T YOU EVER HAVE WORK?!" His face reddened. He should have just said he had a fever! He didn't even deny it... "So, who's the lucky lady?" Her voice was mocking in its innocence. Before he even noticed her move, she was beside his bed, peering over the book. He slammed it shut to prevent her from finding out even more than either of them already knew. "Out of my room, mom! Can't I ever get some privacy?" She kissed him on the cheek before appearing beside the door again. Sometimes Katsuo was sure his mother had been a ninja in a past life. "Don't be so impolite, Tsu-kun. It really doesn't suit you. I guess I'll just have to wait a while..." She sighed, thoroughly disappointed. The door shut abruptly behind her.

Uh oh.

He'd never really thought about it before, but maybe... Maybe he really did like Mitsuko.
