I tend to write on the computer for the most part. There's a pad of paper and a pen in my book bag though, in case I get the urge to start writing down ideas. sweatdrop After accidentally forgetting the one idea I had when sleeping, I learned to write things down no matter where I am and what I'm doing.

So when do you get some of your most interesting/best ideas? I find my dreams give me some ideas, and also when my mind is wandering (usually during class sweatdrop ) I get some good ones as well

SandRider_727 Gah! I'm the only person who voted for sci-fi! Unfortunately, you can only vote for one, and most of my stuff is fantasy. I do write some sci-fi, but decided to lump my vote in with the majority of my stuff.Saber Alli I have been trying to write on the computer lately, but its just not working out too well.... so I am going back to pen and paper. It is easier to carry around (compared to my laptop) and I can be pretending to take notes during my work meetings wink It can take some time to get used to a different way of writing, and laptops can be a weight to add to a backpack/breifcase when you are carrying around a lot of books and/or paperwork, but I find that the time I save in transfering hand-written notes and stories onto the computer is well worth the bother. Then again, I got a keyboard for my Palm Treo so I could type stuff up wherever I went without having to cart around the laptop and adapter all the time. And he-he! I totally am with you on 'taking notes' at meetings. There is so much bull at most meetings--mostly you waste a couple of hours and come out with only 2 or 3 lines of notes that are relevant. talk2hand Saber Alli So when do you get some of your most interesting/best ideas? I find my dreams give me some ideas, and also when my mind is wandering (usually during class sweatdrop ) I get some good ones as well I get ideas from dreams, books, tv, talking to people, listening to the lyrics of songs, looking at artwork, the news, desktop RPGs, pretty much anywhere and everywhere. There is even a Plot Generator, which has some ridiculuous stuff in it, but occassionally it sparks a story idea. Check here for a couple of my favorite time-killers:Random Plot GeneratorPlot Twist GeneratorSeventh Sanctum - A page FULL of various generators and links to many others

I find it easier when to "concentrate" (can I say concentrate when there's just nothing on my mind at the time?) while listening to music. *squeals over the links* I'm going to use those generators for sure! Maybe to challenge myself into generation a random plot and writing a short story. The links are the best. heart

It was pretty cool and had lots of pictures posted by various Gaians. I lost track of it when the site moved, tho'. None of the old links work. crying

I like mine a lot, tho' I am salivating a little over the iPhone. whee Probably won't be able to afford one for a few months after it comes out, but it looks DARN sweet. Don't know as it would look as good in a meeting, since it looks a bit like an iPod on the outside. ninja Good news is I think it fits all the iPod carriers, headphones, docks, etc.

Try to combine every decent idea you've ever had into one novel/la.

I wanted to ask if anyone had experience with online books. My friend got the recent Mercedes Lackey one online for slightly cheaper than it is at the store, but she told me she has abunch of free ones as well. Has anyone tried these at all? and if so, what are some good places to get them? I did a search but most of what they called "online books" were short stories and/or writings-in-progress.

I don't usually write by hand - my handwriting sucks and I can't write as fast as I think like that.
I do, however, write by hand when I'm away from my computer and an Idea strikes me. then I jot the notes or the scene that popped into my head down on a piece of paper and when I get to a computer I hurridly type it all up and sort it out. The I continue on the computer.
I love typing. When I was in middle school and high school my mom made sure I could type properly, and thank God she did, because now I can type at the speed of light without looking. It's awesome, because I can type almost as fast as I think, so a lot of stuff isn't forgoten or left out. ^.^ Yay!
I usually write at night time, and right now I'm writing masses of fanfiction along with about three other original stories. I can't handle only working on one story because I have to write what I want to when I want to. It means I update stuff slower, but I also can do multiple works at once and not become bored. And if I get writer's block I just hop on over to the other stories until I can sort the block out in my head.
I've had cases where I've had blocks for multiple stories, but I always end up getting over them by working on other stories. It's hectic, but it works for me. XD

I've also done things like lay down on the floor in a dark room with a tape recorder, and close my eyes, and just talk into it. I find that I can create a story easily with my eyes closed and my mind running wild. I get some crazy plots that way. XD

I like to write in the dark abode of my room with either my laptop or my notebook, though I prefer my laptop because my handwriting is shocking.

And I can never write as fast as I think. Of course, I can't really TYPE as fast as I think either, but it's certainly much faster than writing by hand. And my fingers don't cramp up! Yay!

I found that a really good way to get your ideas down is to always carry around a small pocket sized notebook and a pen or pencil. That way if an idea or inspiration comes along for your story you can quickly write it down and make sure that you will remember it. Writing down ideas as soon as you get them ensures that you will have them documented later on and you can always refer back to them.
