Up to the Fates
Class Choice Solo

Zaeryn pushed his hair behind his ears, his normal wild braid pulled up into an even more wild bun. While the rest of the troupe was training and practicing their routines, making sure their work would be perfect for the show, Zaeryn was enjoying his time instead. His craft wasn’t something that one practiced. Zaeryn believed that he was spoken to by the fates, the Gods, and the universe itself.

Not that he was lucky enough to hear their voices outright. He just knew that he could interpret their will as they showed it to him through his craft - whichever way he needed to decipher their words that particular day. He drew tarot, read palms, studied auras and chakras, there were many things he enjoyed doing to ‘read the future’, but his personal favorite was always his cards. It almost felt like a sense of… magic, and was entirely mystical in nature to him.

So while the group trained and did their thing, he did his. He applied the cream he had purchased to his face, letting the mask sit and absorb all of the dirt and grime he had accumulated from the sands of Matori. Then - he relaxed. He could hear the cacophony of sounds coming from the other tents and wagons nearby, but his tent was serene. There was incense wafting through the air, candles lit for ambiance, and the opening of the tent drawn shut to keep out most of the light. It was enjoyable, but he wasn’t entirely selfish with his down time. Today he would keep to himself, but he also offered himself up to the others to help them with their routines when needed. Just for fun he drew one of his cards while his mask set and flipped it over. Hmmm, an upright death card. Change was coming.

Zaeryn leaned back in his pillows and closed his eyes, wondering what the Gods had in store for him yet.

Trouble Brewing
Prentice Growth Solo

Zaeryn was spending his afternoon in the typical fashion; he was relaxing in his tent. He had his cards pulled out on his low table, his pillows strewn around the floor and he was draped over them, feeling the salty Matori air seeping in from outside and settling on his cheeks. It wasn’t unusual for him in the slightest, and as always, he was about to draw some readings for himself. It helped him keep his mind open to the Gods’ wills and to stay in tune for those who came seeking his craft for their own fortunes.

He lazily pulled his deck down to join him on the floor and cut through it before dealing the first card on the top. The normal reading for the night’s show. Six of wands. Public reward and success. It would be a good show, the gods were blessing them with a good crowd.

He thought of his friend Nedelle and the conversation they had earlier in the week about traveling with the circus. They were going to be hitting the road soon, and were both nervous to start this new chapter of their lives. He drew a card for her. The reversed Sun. That was unusual for Nedelle. If there was anything that described her, this was the opposite. Negativity, depression, sadness. Zaeryn furrowed his brows and sat upright. He pulled an additional card for detail. What did the Gods have in store for his smaller friend? A nine of Swords: anxiety. He pulled one more. Reversed Queen of Wands: insecurity.

Zaeryn was becoming concerned for his friend. The Gods weren’t being coy with this one. It was one negative card after another. There was something in the works for Nedelle and Zaeryn could see it.

But he knew how Nedelle felt about his reading her future. She didn’t want to hear it. But it usually wasn’t this dark. Did he tell her, should he warn her? She didn’t like to know what the Gods planned for her. She always said ‘what would be, would be’. Zaeryn struggled, knowing he wanted to respect her feelings, but also knowing that he felt he needed to do something. He felt in his heart that he had to at least warn her that something was amiss. He breathed deep and tried to clear his own feelings from his decision. Maybe he shouldn’t tell her. If she knew that something bad was coming, would she just look for it in the corner of her vision at all times? Would he cause more anxiety for her than whatever it was that Zaeryn was seeing?

There was no way to know when or what exactly would happen, and with that knowledge Zaeryn decided to not tell his dearest friend there was trouble in the works for her. He would keep an eye on her, try to see if he knew when the danger would happen and maybe he could intervene. It was the only thing he could do right now, knowing Nedelle wouldn’t listen to him anyways. He sighed and rubbed his temples.

Trouble brewing and Zaeryn couldn’t stop it.

[Zaeryn receives a tarot drawing that signals an ominous message for his friend Nedelle and he has to decide whether to tell her or not.]

Shadows in the Sand

Zaeryn wandered through the crowded streets of Oba, the oppressive heat bearing down upon him like a heavy weight, mirroring the burden of unanswered questions that weighed on his mind. His footsteps echoed hollowly against the sun-baked cobblestones, a stark contrast to the lively chatter and laughter that filled the air around him.

As he passed by families gathered around market stalls and friends sharing meals at outdoor cafes, Zaeryn couldn't help but feel a pang of bitterness in his heart – a bitter reminder of the family he had lost, the parents who had deserted him without explanation or reason.

His mother's gentle smile and his father's enigmatic gaze haunted him like shadows in the desert, their absence a gaping wound that refused to heal. Why had they left him behind? What had he done to drive them away? These questions gnawed at his soul, festering like an open wound that refused to close.

And as he watched other families walk hand in hand, their laughter ringing out like a cruel mockery of his own pain, Zaeryn felt a surge of resentment welling up inside him – resentment towards the parents who had abandoned him, resentment towards the world that had robbed him of a normal childhood.

But even amidst the bitterness and anger, Zaeryn knew that he could not let himself be consumed by the shadows of the past. He had been given a second chance – a chance to forge his own path, to create his own family, to find meaning and connection in a world that had once seemed so cold and indifferent.

Zaeryn thought of Nedelle and Jisena and the family he already called his own. He thought of the ever growing additions - Mirin, Suria, and Vaena. His thoughts lingered on Vaena for perhaps longer than they should have.

With a determined set to his jaw, Zaeryn vowed to himself that he would not let the sins of his parents define him. He would build a life for himself, one filled with love and laughter, one where he could find solace and acceptance amidst the chaos of the world.

And as he continued on his journey through the bustling streets of Oba, Zaeryn felt a glimmer of hope stirring deep within him – a hope born from the knowledge that no matter what had happened in the past, he had the power to shape his own destiny, to carve out a future that was uniquely his own.

For Zaeryn knew that the desert sands held secrets both dark and light, shadows and sunshine intermingled in a delicate dance of life and death. And as he walked amidst the shifting sands, he knew that he would find his own place in the world – a place where he belonged, a place where he was loved.

And as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the sand-swept streets, Zaeryn felt a sense of peace settle over him – a peace born from the knowledge that he was not alone, that he had friends and allies who stood by his side, ready to support him on his journey.

For Zaeryn knew that while the scars of the past may never fully heal, they did not define him. He was Zaeryn, a survivor, a fighter, a showman with a heart of gold. And as he gazed up at the star-filled sky above, he knew that the future held endless possibilities, waiting to be discovered amidst the shifting sands of time.

Threads of Fate

Zaeryn sat cross-legged on a threadbare rug in the dimly lit tent, the flickering flame of a single candle casting eerie shadows across the worn fabric. Before him lay a spread of tarot cards, their ancient symbols and mysterious imagery illuminated by the soft glow of the candlelight.

Across from him sat Taria, a young woman with haunted eyes and a troubled soul. She had sought out Zaeryn's tent on a whim, drawn by whispers of his uncanny ability to see into the future and unravel the mysteries of fate. And now, as she watched him shuffle the deck with practiced hands, a sense of unease settled over her like a dark cloud.

Zaeryn's silver tongue wove tales of destiny and doom as he laid out the cards before her, his voice low and melodious as he spoke of the past, the present, and the uncertain future that lay ahead. With each card that was turned over, Taria felt a chill run down her spine, as if the very fabric of reality was unraveling before her eyes.

The first card to be revealed was the Tower – a symbol of upheaval and destruction, of sudden and catastrophic change. Zaeryn's voice was solemn as he spoke of upheaval and chaos, of a world turned upside down and a foundation shaken to its core.

Next came the Nine of Swords – a card of fear and anxiety, of sleepless nights and troubled dreams. Taria's breath caught in her throat as Zaeryn spoke of nightmares and despair, of a mind consumed by darkness and doubt.

And then, the final card – the Death card, a symbol of endings and new beginnings, of transformation and rebirth. Zaeryn's voice was hushed as he spoke of endings and beginnings, of cycles coming to a close and new chapters waiting to be written.

As the reading came to an end, Taria felt a sense of foreboding settle over her like a heavy shroud. The words Zaeryn had spoken hung in the air like a portent of doom, echoing in the silence of the tent.

But even amidst the shadows of fate, there was a glimmer of hope – a flicker of light amidst the darkness. For Zaeryn had also spoken of resilience and strength, of the power to rise above adversity and forge a new path forward.

And as Taria left the tent, no doubt her heart heavy with the weight of Zaeryn's words, Zaeryn knew that whatever the future held, she would face it with courage and determination, knowing that even in the darkest of times, there was always a light to guide her way.

He hoped that she would remember his words.
