Tendaji is a rich and diverse land filled with many different cultures and languages. Do you find someone to translate, or fumble along?
[ Tendaji has many different languages that the locals speak, and sometimes you might find yourself in a village or town where no one is speaking your language. Use this prompt to explore that miscommunication - maybe thinking about how hard it is to get your message across. Or connecting with a stranger who is helping you translate so you can make that purchase you need. What happens when everything is lost in translation? ]

Vaena had thought that Matori had been different enough from Yael, but now that the troupe was touring through Tendaji she could see that there wasn’t a place they had been to that she would consider to be her normal.
The tour through Oba had gone well enough, though it was hot and so very dry. The customs were almost a little familiar, they were much more ordered and formal than the other places she had been.
Jauhar had jungles that were reminiscent of Yael, though with a lot less standing water and much much darker. It was interesting, but she also thought she would have felt more at home than what she actually did there. They had just reached Kueta and the combination of peoples was almost overwhelming. Had everyone just decided to move there?

Zaeryn rubbed a hand through his hair. The tour through Tendaji had taken a toll on his thick braid and to keep cool and keep up with the humidity he had chopped it off to a curly bob. He felt it suited him and he should have just done that from the beginning. It was so freeing to not have so much weight dragging down his head. Really cleared the mind.
He spotted Vaena through the glow of the surrounding crystals and lanterns and made his way to her. The poor girl had seemed more and more frazzled as their journey had continued.

[Vaena 2]
Vaena sighed as she adjusted the basket in her arms, filled to the brim with fabric, dye, and sewing tools she had picked up for the troupe’s costuming needs.
The market in Kueta was unlike anything she had ever experienced. It was loud, colorful, and packed with people of all kinds—earthlings, alkidike, shifters, and travelers from all over Tendaji. The smells of roasted meats and spices filled the air, blending with the scent of freshly cut wood and the faint dampness of the forest canopy above.
She didn’t get overwhelmed easily, but even she had to admit this was a bit much.

[Zaeryn 2]
Zaeryn sauntered up beside her, hands tucked lazily into the folds of his vest, looking as though he belonged here more than the people who had built the city.
He flashed her a grin. "You look like you’re about to throw that basket at someone."

[Vaena 3]
She rolled her eyes.
"Not yet, but I’m considering it." She shifted the weight in her arms, glancing around for the next vendor on her list.
"You could make yourself useful and carry something, you know."

[Zaeryn 3]
Zaeryn hummed thoughtfully, tilting his head as if weighing his options. "I could… but watching you struggle is oddly entertaining."
Vaena shot him a glare so sharp it could have cut through silk. Zaeryn chuckled, but before he could further test her patience, a commotion broke out near a spice vendor ahead. A merchant was waving his arms, frustration evident in his furrowed brows, while a tall, dark-skinned earthling woman stood before him, arms crossed, speaking in hurried Jauharan.

[Vaena 4]
Vaena groaned. "Great. A language barrier. That should speed up our errands," she muttered.
She had heard Jauharan before but didn’t understand a word of it. Not that it was her problem—she had things to do.
She turned on her heel to leave the situation behind.

But Zaeryn’s grin widened.
He stepped forward without hesitation, slipping into the conversation seamlessly.
His voice shifted, fluid and musical, the words rolling off his tongue like he had been born speaking them. "Mafuhamu. Anahitaji nini?"

[Vaena 5]
Vaena froze mid-step.
The tension in the air dissipated almost instantly as the Jauharan woman’s eyes widened in surprise. She answered quickly, hands moving expressively as she explained herself. The merchant, still looking frustrated, crossed his arms and waited.
Vaena turned slowly, brows furrowing as she watched Zaeryn with narrowed eyes. He was listening carefully, nodding along, expression relaxed and engaged. His voice dipped lower as he spoke again, effortlessly carrying the conversation.
She didn’t know why she was so irritated. Maybe it was because he had never once mentioned that he could speak Jauharan. Maybe it was because he had waltzed in and saved the day when she was more than ready to leave.
Or maybe—just maybe—it was because it was impressive, and she hated that she was impressed.

[Zaeryn 5]
Zaeryn flashed the merchant a charming smile, smoothly switching back to Common. "She’s trying to trade rare black cardamom from the deep jungles of Jauhar, but you’ve never seen it before and think she’s lying about its value," he translated, clicking his tongue. "You, my friend, are about to miss out on a very lucrative deal."
The merchant grumbled something under his breath, glancing toward the Jauharan woman again. She lifted a brow expectantly.

Vaena folded her arms. "And you just happened to know Jauharan?" she asked, voice flat.

Zaeryn turned to her with a dramatic flourish, placing a hand over his heart. "My dear Vaena, I am a man of many talents. Surely you didn’t think I only knew Common?"

[Vaena 7]
Vaena huffed, but she felt a heat creeping up her neck. He was enjoying this. And worse, she was, too.
Within minutes, the deal was settled. The merchant begrudgingly accepted the trade, and the Jauharan woman beamed, thanking Zaeryn profusely. As she walked away, she gave Vaena a knowing look—one that made her bristle.
