Summer Festivals

Summer was drawing closer and closer and the different villages around Tendaji were beginning to plan their summer festivals. It was a tradition in Tendaji - to celebrate the Gods every year in the summer when spirits were high and food was at its most abundant.
All the races had their own gods to celebrate, whatever those might have been, and every person had their own feelings one way or the other.
[ What did they mean to you? With the summer fast approaching, it must be somewhere (no matter how small) on everyone’s thoughts. And what are your thoughts on the other culture’s gods? ]

It was Vaena’s first time off of Yael and she couldn’t help but feel like she was naked in front of all of these outsiders. She didn’t enjoy it. Back home in Yael there were more and more mainlanders moving in and inhabiting her island, something she already didn’t really agree with, but it couldn’t be helped. Now that she had decided to see what all the hype was about off of Yael she felt like she was crawling in her skin. She didn’t much enjoy what she was seeing so far.
She had reached Matori and it just happened to be the peak of their summer festival season. There were crowds everywhere, people grinning and blabbering on with each other, all so friendly and nosey. They all were interested in everyone getting off of the boats and leaving the docks and that meant they were trying to talk to Vaena.

Zaeryn was among the crowd outside of the docks. It was summer festival season and that meant that they were about to have one of their bigger shows of the year. Jisena had everyone out in their free time recruiting interest in their shows and drumming up business. Not that Zaeryn minded. It meant he was off to meet more lovely ladies of all ages and entice them to come see him later in the light of the setting sun. Maybe even invite one or two to meet him for a ‘nighttime reading’.
It wasn’t long before he spotted a lovely lady to introduce himself to, a long haired yaeli girl with a grumpy disposition. He was ready to turn that frown upside down. ”Why hello there. The Gods must have taken pity on me today to bring such a beauty into my life.”

Vaena heard him before she really saw him and the look on her face turned sour. A mainlander. Though his looks suggested that he wasn’t what one would consider a typical earthling. So a hybrid then. ”What would make you think that I wanted to be the Gods’ gift to anyone?” She shot back without much thought. Bold of him to assume he could approach her like this and she would what… swoon or something?

Zaeryn faltered for just a moment. Not the typical reaction he received really. She was a wild one, he could see that. There was a fire in her eyes which meant passion. ”The Gods know best and who am I to question their blessings?” He grinned a sultry grin her way and shot a wink. ”I have read the wills of the fates and I believe I was meant to meet you here today.”
The cards had said to him that the unexpected was coming in the form of water, but he hadn’t thought that had meant much at the time. Turns out there might just be something to it after all.

Vaena felt like she wanted to vomit with how thick this earthling was laying it on. ”I don’t believe that one bit.” She was being overly confrontational, she knew this. It was a defense mechanism to the new and unwelcome. But there were things in this world that she knew to be true, and that this guy could read the future was not one of them. ”Look, how about you just leave me be and I’ll be on my way?” She suggested, running a hand through her hair and trying to calm down some.

Zaeryn posed her a question in response to her question. ”If you wanted to be left alone, why did you leave your home then? Especially when you have such an interest in…” he paused momentarily, lightly grabbing her hand and flipping it palm up to give it a glance. ”foreign jewelry and clothing?” He offered.
This woman was looking for something and the longer Zaeryn spoke to her, the more he was sure what it was and that he could provide it. She just needed to give him a chance to show her.

Vaena furrowed her brows with wide eyes and pulled her hand away with a jolt. She sputtered at first, her mouth not knowing the words to use. He was just a conman, that was all, he took a guess and happened to get it right. ”Very clever. Single out the foreigner, call her out for leaving home, and take a shot in the dark on a woman’s interests and think you’re right.” She rationalized it. It was all a mind game with people like this. There were charlatans back in Yael too, he wouldn’t be the first.
”If you’re so in tune with your gods, tell me, what do you have that I could possibly be interested in?” She spat out.

Zaeryn looked into her eyes for a moment, studying her features and reading whatever it was he could from her. After some silence he cupped a hand under her chin and tilted it up toward him. ”Purpose.” He almost hummed out toward the girl. ”You’re searching for something and I can provide you with company, family, purpose, and challenge.” He offered.
He didn’t know anything about the girl but there was a sadness behind her eyes, under the fire. The glow of her gray yaeli eyes shone through her tough spirit and he knew she wanted something more. She should join the circus. Jisena accepted anyone as family and they were hitting the road soon, she could join. ”I’m Zaeryn.” He purred his name into her ear, getting closer to her by the second.

Vaena’s mouth dropped open at the brazenness of this guy. He whispered his name in her ear and she almost forgot where she was. It was like he could see things she didn’t know she wore on her face and it surprised her into speechlessness.
She shook her head and pulled away from him again. ”You don’t know anything about me.” But her voice was less certain this time. ”Zaeryn.” She spat out the sound of the name, looking at him with intensity. She wanted him to just go away, but she also wanted him to be around forever. His voice was soothing and calming, and he spoke truths in ways she didn’t know how. Her feelings were conflicting and she didn’t like it.
She inhaled deeply, holding it for a moment all puffed up her feathers ruffled, before she exhaled deflated. The fight was out of her. He was too intriguing to continue to be mad at. ”Vaena.” She offered, her attitude soured but soft, like aged cheese. ”I don’t believe anything you say by the way, but how do you come up with this stuff?”

Zaeryn watched her pull away and he knew that he had gotten to her. He smirked and cocked his head to the side, watching her play out her inner turmoil in front of him. ”The Gods speak to me of course.” He said it with such ease. He had read fortunes all of his life, he liked to think he was getting pretty good at interpreting the Gods’ wills and decisions for others. ”My adopted family are always looking for more orphans to take in and provide them with what they crave.” He of course was talking about the circus.

Vaena looked confused with his mention of an adopted family. Take in orphans? She wasn’t an orphan, nor was she looking for a replacement family for the one she had back home. ”I don’t think you know as much as you think you do.” She said with doubt in her voice now.

Zaeryn only grinned, this time a big goofy grin with sincerity. ”Oh, I think I do. I can see you don’t understand what kind of family it is I’m talking about.” He offered her a hand to take.
”If you come with me I can show you. Jisena and Nedelle would be happy to meet you and if I’m right about your talents I think we have a spot that would be perfect for you. You sew, yes?” He asked her, hoping she would take his hand.

Vaena was altogether confused and a little taken aback that he would presume to know so much about her without ever meeting her before, and that he would also be a little right. She did sew. Her main interest was jewelry, but she knew her way around fabric, learning how to embed jewels into the clothing she played around with.
”I…” She didn’t have a come back or a reason to refuse his offer. She didn’t come to Tendaji with a plan, she was just venturing out into the world she had chosen to shut out for so long.
She took Zaeryn’s hand and let him lead the way to wherever it was they were planning on going.

Zaeryn felt pure delight when she finally took her hand. He saw it in her hands and in her eyes that this was the right decision for her.
Zaeryn had no doubt in his mind that he had meant to come to the docks today to meet this yaeli woman with anger on her face and distrust in her soul. She was just the kind of misfit that would make herself home with his little family and with time he hoped that they would become good friends.
It was the Gods’ blessings that provided for his circus on the summer festival that day, he was positive.
