[☾ ✦ E ☾ ✦] Remembering the Past [☾ ✦ E ☾ ✦] [- Event Located Here -] [- 785 words -] Ondine, for once, was not dancing in the waves. She was getting older, and more curious of her surroundings, and as a result was often spending time observing her parents when they were together. Almost all of her life, she saw her mother, a beautiful matori woman with rich dark hair and eyes that matched Ondine's own. The woman was her life bringer, and was the one who helped raise her whenever her father traveled.
Her father traveled quite a bit when she was younger, not giving her any solid reasons outside of work. Ondine wasn't foolish, and with her pointed ears she could hear the soft words of her parents late at night. They spoke of danger, of how the borders still were not safe and how her father needed to travel home to help his family. Even after settling with a new life, he had to make the journey to make sure all was alright.
And then, the women with black eyes attacked.
Ondine watched her mother cry as her father marched off to war, hidden away and forced to pretend she had no clue. She was young, but even she knew that her father was in some sort of danger, because her mother had never cried like that. It was then she approached her mother and asked what war was, something that both had uncomfortably spoken about in detail as they waited for her father to return.
"Momma..." Ondine would whisper each night as she was tucked away, the moon looking down through her window as the sea breeze tickled her nose, "...when will daddy come home...?"
"Soon...soon..."
Every night, as they waited for her father to return home, Ondine softly asked when it would happen. And after she asked, she would always reach out with her small arms to get a hug from her mother, seemingly endless in length as she tried to give her mother as much comfort as she was receiving.
After what felt like years, the soldiers who decided to march to war returned to the villages. Word was faster than the pace of the men and women, so Ondine heard of their journey well before they appeared on the beaches. Tears and stories were shared, and both the hybrid child and her mother waited with baited breath for a dark skinned man to walk past the blue of the matori. When he finally arrived, both mother and daughter ran with tears in their eyes to welcome him home.
Ondine wasn't really aware of what exactly happened during those wars. She knew that there was damage and hatred, and that wars hurt people and their homes. The young child couldn't imagine what actually occurred with war, beside that it took families away who needed to protect their homes from those who wanted to hurt them. Ondine could understand that, as she was taught right from wrong. Her daddy was doing right, against those who wanted to do wrong.
Still, she wasn't too satisfied with her father being back all worn and exhausted, clearly having done so much to fight against the wrongs of the world. She wanted to help.
Ondine, for all of her youth, wanted to be like her daddy and help protect the world from the evils around it. She wanted to grow up strong, so that no child like her needed to cry in their sleep waiting for their parents to come home. She didn't want to see her mother lose sleep over a husband that might not come home. She was young, but she had a sense of justice, and knew she wanted to do what it took to make sure that what she felt wouldn't happen to anyone else.
The past was something she couldn't change, but as she grew older Ondine knew she needed to take it to heart. Her father was finally able to settle down in the sands, believing with the win over the dark eyed women that his home was finally safe from harm. He was finally able to spend time with the wife he found across the sands, and teach Ondine a bit more about her heritage and shifting skin.
Yes, she may not have been part of the war, or aware of exactly what was happening outside of the beaches she called home, but Ondine was by no means unaffected. She grew up seeing the pain, and the happiness, of her family, and she knew which one she preferred. So instead of learning how to fish, or to bake, Ondine was determined to learn how to fight so she could defend those she loved. That is what she learned from the wars of her past.

[☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] Class Affinity [☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] [- 620 words -] It took months to travel across Matori, through Oba, and around Jauhar to reach the Shifter camps bordering tale. Ondine, although young and willful, was limited by her parent's pacing and the need to rest constantly between jobs. Her father, once a great warrior and a man who had participated in many wars, had settled as a guard and escort for shipments, and was valuable in the land now riddled with bandits.
Bandits, oh! What an interesting concept to the ever growing girl. Ondine believed in honor and justice, but the idea of not being bound by parents, by roles, was a bit romantic to the excitable girl. She knew she was lean and strong, and she often imagined being a bandit and fighting against the monsters who hurt her mother and displaced her father. Sure, they supported Obans now, but she was a pure representation of two of the races those fire-bringers once held down.
Late at night, she pretended she was some hero, who would free wayward slaves hidden in the depths of Oban homes, fighting alongside bandits to free money stolen away. It was warped, but she always imagined coming back with her team of friends and making sure that justice was served to those who dwelled in the dark depths of the lands.
Eventually, as they settled in a camp away from the border of Oban and the scars of the wars, Ondine found herself restless. She wanted to wander and explore, and felt more than justified with her age and wisdom. No longer was she being taught basics, and she didn't quite like the gentle tidings of her mother to become a good wife or her father reassuring that he would protect her.
She like training, deep in the night as her skin glowed, and she wanted to keep training. She tried the clunky weapons, but nothing felt the same as using her fists on the training dummies. There was control, focus, and she felt stronger once she was done. If she lingered to watch the young boys brawl outside of the bar each night, she didn't mention it to anyone. If she wanted to join, she resisted.
Each time she walked away, however, it was difficult.
More and more she wanted to do something. As her muscles became defined, as she was drawn to the shouts and brawls at each settlement they rested, Ondine wanted more. Her dreams were now filled with the idea of freedom...of no longer being trapped with her parents and instead moving through a world where she simply went where her fists pulled her.
It was so crazy, but every time she woke up to the light in her eyes, she felt her frustration grow a little more. It almost was to the point where she wanted to explode out of her skin. She got into fights with her parents, the anger coming out in waves to the point where she no longer spoke to them as they settled in Jauhar. She began to go out at night, to get into fights and lose them. To be covered in bruises and to learn that the sweet taste of ale would help her forget the pain.
She wasn't sure if she was hiding the pain from her bruises...or the pain of not being able to follow her dream.
One day, Ondine knew she had to do something more. She had to get away from the shadow of her parents and learn to live on her own. It was time to fight her way into where she wanted, to chase her dreams and discover her true self. She just needed to talk her parents into giving her that freedom to be free.

[☾ ✦ Q ☾ ✦] Leaving The Nest [☾ ✦ Q ☾ ✦] [- 528 Words -] [- Jauhar -] [ Ondine has had enough, she wants to branch out on her own and travel the world, but she's got to get through her mother first. ] This was it. Ondine held her breath as she stood outside their current residence. Her mother was inside, most likely waiting for her to come home as always. It was a normal occurrence, she would attempt to sneak in and inevitable get caught by her mother. Then she'd have to stay up later, exhausted, listening to the same old lecture again and again.
Ladies weren't meant to pick fights. Bruises are for warriors and not children. She should know better, be better. Ondine heard it so many times that just the thought of it made her ears bleed. She was nearly a full-grown adult, and she knew that it was high time for her to get out and get on her own. Ondine was ready to put her foot down.
Opening the door, Ondine looked around until she locked eyes with her matori mother. Fists clenched, she walked over and sat down across from her mother, chin lifted and eyes bright. Her mother, in all her wisdom, seemed to understand the change in tone and looked over her daughter in silence.
"Ondine...you've been out drinking and fighting again..." she finally said with a sigh, her lashes low as her Matori eyes looked over her daughter with a keen gaze.
"Aye." She responded with her thick accent, stubborn even in her one word response. Her mother just shook her head.
"Ondine. You are my daughter, my blessing with your father. We love you with all of our being. As you got older, we've grown fearful that one day you might not come home..."
Ondine scoffed at that, but her mother held her hand up and Ondine didn't make any move to speak up more.
"I realize now that we've sheltered you a bit too much, and you've only rebelled against our efforts. I never realized that you've grown beyond my protection...as much as I hate to admit it."
Ondine blinked. It never felt like her mother was trying to protect or. Smother, maybe, but not protect. Rubbing her hand against her short trimmed hair, the young girl waited a beat to confirm her mother was silent, before placing her hands on the table.
"I don't need yer protection...I can fight my own battles..." she said with passion, before pushing up to stand, "Aye, I love ye. I'm so grateful for what ye did for me these years..."
She smiled, soft as she looked down at her mother, "Thank ye, but it's time fer me to fight my own battles."
Her mother was soft, weak in body but strong in spirit. She realized now that she took after her mother a bit more than she could admit. Sure, Ondine showed off her strength in her attitude and by fighting, but her mother was strong and determined.
Moving around, Ondine took her mother's hands and pulled her up, smiling brightly before pulling her into her arms.
"I'll be ok." She said softly, "And I'll always come see ye when I'm in town..."
Her mother wrapped her arms around Ondine, and in moonlight the two connected in a way that would keep them close in the coming months while they were apart.

[☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] A Lucrative Opportunity [☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] [- 831 words -] Ondine stood at the entrance of the dimly lit tavern, the raucous noise of patrons and the smell of sweat and ale enveloping her senses. Her eyes scanned the room, taking in the hardened fighters, each with their own stories etched into their scarred faces. This was the kind of place she felt alive, where her true spirit could flourish. She adjusted the worn leather straps on her forearms, her knuckles tingling with anticipation.
Word had reached her ears of a secret and highly lucrative fight club hidden deep within the labyrinthine alleys of Sulburi. It was whispered that only the most skilled and fearsome fighters were allowed entry, and the rewards for victorious combatants were beyond imagination. Ondine knew this was her chance to prove herself and claim her rightful place among the elite. It made it worth taking the extensive trip through the desert and complete some investigation on where the club was located.
As she stepped downstairs to the hidden arena, Ondine observed the rowdy crowd, studying the dynamics of the fights taking place in the center of the room. Powerful punches and calculated maneuvers were unleashed, accompanied by the cheers and jeers of the spectators. She watched the men, their muscles rippling under sweat-soaked tunics, trading blows and displaying their dominance.
The petite warrior knew that her appearance alone would not be enough to gain the respect of these seasoned fighters. Ondine was no stranger to prejudice and the doubting eyes of those who underestimated her. In fact, she thrived on her ability to take her opponents by surprise. Her spirit burned with an unyielding determination, and she had honed her skills through countless battles over the years.
She approached a Oban burly man who seemed to be in charge of the fights, his arms crossed over a barrel-like chest. His gaze fell upon her with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. Obviously, he was not expecting a hybrid of her nature to walk up to the registration.
""m lookin' ta join yer fightin' club," Ondine declared, her voice firm and unyielding.
The man chuckled, a low rumble escaping his throat. "You? A slip of a girl like you wants to fight with these beasts?" He gestured to the brutes engaged in combat. Ondine's golden eyes glanced where he gestured, but her expression remained unimpressed. She was well aware the strengths of a beast, and even more so how to take advantage of their weaknesses.
"Ye may be surprised," she replied, her eyes burning with intensity. "'m not 'fraid ta prove myself. Yer beasts might do well with a little fear n'stead."
The man's gaze narrowed, assessing her determination before he began to chuckle at the thought.
"Very well, but don't say I didn't warn you."
Ondine's heart surged with anticipation as she stepped into the fighting ring, the crowd falling silent in anticipation of the upcoming spectacle. She knew she needed to unleash her skills with precision and power, to leave an indelible mark upon their memories.
Her opponent, a hulking mountain of muscle in the form of another Oban warrior, sneered at the sight of her. "This will be over before it even begins," he taunted, raising his fists as the crowd laughed in response.
Ondine took a deep breath, her mind focused and her body poised for action. The cheers erupted as the fight began, and she danced gracefully, her movements fluid and precise. With each strike, her blows landed with the force of thunder, surprising both her opponent and the onlookers.
She ducked under his heavy punches, evading with grace and retaliating with a series of quick, well-placed jabs. The crowd erupted in awe, the disbelief on their faces slowly transforming into respect and admiration. Ondine's petite frame belied the immense power she possessed.
Minutes turned into a blur of sweat and adrenaline. Ondine's knuckles became a blur, her fists a tempest of destruction. The fight came to a dramatic climax when she landed a precise blow, flooring her opponent with a resounding thud.
The crowd, silent until this moment, erupted in applause and cheers, the once-skeptical men now mesmerized by her display of skill and raw power. Ondine had won their respect and proved herself as a worthy contender.
As she stood victorious in the center of the ring, her bruised and battered body bore witness to her determination. The man who had doubted her now approached, a mix of admiration and awe in his eyes.
"You've earned your place among our ranks, Ondine," he said, his voice carrying a hint of respect. "Welcome to the lucrative world of our fight club."
Ondine smirked at the man, holding out a sweaty hand to take his in her own with a forceful shake. She was excited to have shown off, but knew that this was only the beginning. This would be a well-worth stop to raise some funds, and she was excited to show off her skills to the men of this underworld.

[☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] The Determination of Defeat [☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] [- 954 words -] The air crackled with anticipation as Ondine stood in the center of the fighting ring. It had been a few weeks since she joined the fighting ring and she had quickly become a bit of a sensation. No longer was she considered an underdog, and many men (and some women) attempted to best her. It was a mixed bag, and she had her losses and wounds to lick, but overall the thrill was there and she enjoyed her newfound career.
The ringmaster let her know of a special event he was placing her in, one that would raise quite a few funds win or lose. She took a day off to rest up but was ready to go, her energy crackling as she bounced on her toes. She knew the moment she arrived that this would be a pivotal moment, a clash that would test her mettle and push her limits. Across from her stood a towering opponent from Tale, muscles bulging and a fierce glint in his eyes. She knew she faced a formidable challenge, but Ondine's determination burned brighter than ever before.
The crowd, a mix of eager spectators and fervent supporters, held their breath in anticipation. They recognized the legend before them, understood that it was a rare treat to see him walk out in the ring. This would be no easy fight for the girl, but if they learned one thing it was she never gave up on the fight. And boy was this guaranteed to be a fight. Gold and mead flowed freely as the two contenders eyed each other up.
The fight began and Ondine launched herself into action, unleashing a flurry of blows. Her fists danced with precision and speed, each strike calculated to land a devastating impact.
But her opponent was no ordinary adversary. He possessed a strength and technique that matched her own, countering her attacks with deft maneuvers. It was strange to see such a mass of muscle move so quickly, and she knew that this would be a problem. He seemed to be designed to not only dance around her attacks, but overpower her with his own strength. She needed to be careful and finish this fight quickly.
Blow after blow, Ondine fought with every ounce of her being, refusing to yield. However, despite her fierce determination, her opponent's skill was unmatched and soon she found herself growing tired. It was this moment of weakness that would be the beginning of her downfall.
A powerful blow landed against Ondine's jaw, stunning her for a moment. The world spun, and she stumbled back, her vision blurred. She tasted the coppery tang of blood in her mouth as her opponent closed in, relentless and unyielding. Blinking, she quickly pushed past the unfamiliar feeling, one she hadn't had in ages. She needed to focus.
Even in the face of adversity, Ondine's spirit refused to break. She rose to her feet, wiping away the blood from her split lip, her eyes gleaming with fiery resolve. She knew defeat was imminent, but losing this battle would only serve to fuel her hunger for improvement. It was alluring, the feeling of fear that pushed against her determination, and she was almost hungry at the thought of a strong opponent. She knew wounds would heal, and this fight was one that would only make her stronger. Her bright white teeth gleamed as she grinned and fell back into her pose.
Her opponent hesitated at the sight, a glimmer of admiration shining through his emerald gaze.
"You fight with the spirit of a true warrior," he acknowledged, his voice laced with respect. "You have my respect, Vegter."
The acknowledgement touched her, even if she didn't quite understand the word he stated at the end. She knew it was respectful, and the warm flicker of camaraderie amidst the intensity of battle caused her smirk to soften into a smile. Ondine felt a bond forming, recognizing the shared passion for the fight. In that moment, she knew she had found a friend and a potential ally, someone who could help her grow even stronger.
In response, she nodded once, but did not let up. A true warrior respected their opponent by fighting until the end, and this fight would be one of respect.
As the crowd erupted in cheers, recognizing the epic struggle that had unfolded before them. Ondine and her opponent held eye contact for another long moment. There was an unspoken understanding, an unbreakable bond forged through the crucible of combat. It was then that the final bout occurred, and in a flurry of strength and finesse, Ondine found herself on the ground and aching. Above her, her opponent stood with his arms raised as the crowd roared in approval.
The champion was undefeated, and the opponent had fought a respectful fight. Everyone was content with the results even if their purse was a little lighter than before.
"Ye rightfully bested me," Ondine declared, her voice filled with determination as she finally moved to stand. "It won' happen again. Next time, I'll be the one slammin' ye ta tha floor."
Her opponent nodded, a hint of a smile playing on his lips at the cheeky jest of the girl, "I look forward to that day, Vegter. You have the heart of a true warrior, and I'll be honored to face you again."
With those words lingering in the air, Ondine left the ring, a renewed fire burning within her even if she knew she needed to go ice off her bruses. She knew she had tasted both victory and defeat, and it only fueled her desire to become the best she could be.
She couldn't wait to face the man again.

[☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] Training Montage [☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] [- 415 words -] The sun rose on a clear morning, casting a golden glow over the training grounds where Ondine stood, her eyes fixed on a distant horizon. The cool air of the desert lingered, but with each inch the sun rose the heat began to push it. It was important to get out early if one wanted to survive such elements, and Ondine was a regular sight for those finally waking up for their day.
Today was especially impactful for the girl. Determination radiated from her every pore as she prepared for the grueling journey that lay ahead. Inspired by her recent defeat and the camaraderie she had found in her Leaf opponent, she had made a vow to push her limits and become stronger than ever before.
Her training regimen began with the basics, as she honed her footwork, ensuring every step was purposeful and precise. Ondine weaved through a series of carefully positioned wooden posts, her movements growing fluid and effortless. She danced between them, evoking the grace of a swan, her lithe figure defying the laws of gravity.
But it was not just finesse that Ondine sought to master. She sought to enhance her strength and unleash a fury that would strike fear into the hearts of her adversaries. Turning her attention to a row of training dummies, she unleashed a barrage of punches and kicks, each strike hitting with seemingly the force of a thunderclap. The dummies swung back and forth under the weight of her blows, the ground beneath her trembling with her determination.
As the days turned into weeks, Ondine expanded her training routine. She began to push herself further, trying techniques she witnessed from her other battles and shaping them into her own. With her smaller form, she knew she couldn't use every skill, but those that worked ended up being a main part of her routine.
In the midst of her arduous training, Ondine discovered a hidden sanctuary, a serene oasis nestled amidst a labyrinth of the desert. There, she found solace and quiet reflection, meditating on her goals and the path that lay before her. It was in these moments of tranquility that she forged her indomitable will, the unwavering determination to overcome any obstacle.
The weeks stretched into months, and Ondine emerged from her rigorous training, her body stronger, her mind sharper, and her spirit unbreakable. She had honed her skills, developed new techniques, and now, she was ready to face her friend, her enemy, once again.
