World Event ༄ Magic and War Words ༄ 769 Points ༄ 5
Bane was relaxing after a long trip deep in sea, avoiding her younger sister and the excitement she had for the new landwalkers. It wasn't that Bane didn't want to know about them, it was more that she found her level of excitement was lesser than those around her. She was more focused on her job, on her responsibilities than those above the water that she would most likely never see. So, whenever Etana got on a tangent of 'what ifs', Bane would either nod in silence or make an excuse and make herself scarce.
As part of this tactic, the prentice was swimming through the market looking for new tools for her hunt. It was then her attention was caught when someone was shouting about weapons from above, special weapons that they guaranteed wouldn't rust underwater. Bane floated closer and listened to the merchant peddling new swords and spears, the metal shiny in the twilight waters.
Two small blades caught her attention.
"What are these for?" she called out to the merchant, who recognized her and smiled.
"Well, my aspiring huntress, these are weapons used for hunting up there, and fighting each other. This long thing..." He held up a hammer, "...is even used to work fire and build!"
Bane shifted through the small group, looking at the hammer with interest before taking it when it was offered. It was clumsy in her hands, pulled against the water and moved slowly.
"How would anyone hunt with this?" she responded in dismay, shaking her head and handing it back, "It's too heavy and unbalanced."
He nodded, before turning to his box and pulling out two shorter blades. They were longer than the crude knives she used to hunt, sharp and extended. He handed one back to her, "Try this, huntress."
Taking the longer blades, she moved it through the water once more. The water seemed to split for the swords, moving swiftly enough and she nodded agreeing that this was much more satisfactory. She then turned to look at the rest of his wares and shook her head.
"Many of these things aren't suitable for hunting. You said they fight with this?"
He nodded, "Yes! I've seen it myself. They fight on land, and these things can move pretty quickly. Some have a lot of muscle in their arms to hold the hammer and the giant plates they call shields. All of them say they are at peace, but often are preparing for war."
Bane shook her head at the thought, still trying to wrap her head around the idea that people dealt with disagreements with violence. It was so rare in Kahikina, the water-folk seemed more keen to deal with disagreements with words and bargains. While not entirely unheard of, violence was something that very few turned to.
"What type of jobs do they take on with these weapons?" She asked, curious enough to continue the conversation. It was interesting to understand what their purpose was. In Kahikina, everyone had a role to play. No one would move around just to fight each other or for protection. Instead they focused on work and trade, skills and development. It was normal, and the land walkers were bringing something abnormal to the world of Kahikina.
"Some work as guards, protecting people who travel. Others actually train their whole life in case they need to battle against others...but they might not actually battle. Others will train in weapons but do their own jobs, it's more of a protection thing and not a true job..." The merchant explained, his expression pensive and considering just like Bane's.
"So some train their whole life to fight, but never do? And others use weapons to protect themselves from...land walkers that want to hurt them?" The nod she got was confusing, and so Bane pulled away.
She nodded in thanks for the information and rushed away from the crowd, ignoring the other Moakai that played with the new weapons. She wondered if the metal they used was actually suited for the water.
Traveling home, her mind kept going back to the daggers and swords. It seemed that they might be something worth her exploring. She wasn't one to go into a war-focused path, but if she could use weapons to help her with her hunting, maybe she could become more efficient. Her goal was to become a great huntress, and maybe the weapons they had would aid her. It was worth considering, after all. Bane had a bit to think about, to consider. Maybe it was worth a short visit to the surface to learn more.

Solo ☼ Tools For The Trade - Class Affinity Words ☼ 620 Points ☼ 2
Bane continued to consider the weapons that were brought down from the surface, the items that the land walkers were keen to use. Looking at her own tooth daggers, she wondered if those weapons would be better suited for underwater hunting. The weapons she used were old, provided to her from her parents and ones that she often struggled to manage because they weren't made for her. She was lean, fast, and strong - enough so that she felt she outshined many other hunters at her age. Her major limit was the tools she needed to upgrade.
Traveling back to the merchant, Bane looked over the metal carefully. After a few weeks, it seemed that the blades were duller than before. The merchant claimed it was part of the charm, but Bane wasn't so sure. She left the helpful man and moved toward the other merchant, the local Moakai who seemed glum.
"I've lost most of my customers due to him..." She said sourly, her bright eyes glaring a moment before she turned her scarred face toward Bane, "Everyone is all keen on those shiny weapons, but they don't seem to work too well underwater."
"Eventually, they'll understand." Bane replied while bringing out her pack, brushing her hands over the baubles she got from selling some of her hunt. She even had some nice scales in there from one creature, "I need some daggers, something durable and suited to take down a hunt."
The merchant perked up at the sight of tender as well as the request, grinning, "It's your lucky day, the lack of patrons means some of my nicer wears are on discount. I've got some great blades carved from a Hoku'wala bone. Rare treat, considering they are so hard to find. These must be generations old but they still are very strong and valuable...Got them off of a family selling to move to Tendaji..."
Bane narrowed her eyes at the story, but took the blades anyway. They were hard as rocks, unyielding and with smaller teeth all up and down the edges. The craftmanship was divine, and Bane knew that they would be perfect for hunting down the larger prey. One was longer than the other, a sword and dagger combo.
"This is perfect..." Bane replied, before haggling a decent price. Her bag for trade was nearly empty, but she knew this weapon set would last her a long time and was very rare considering the bone it was made from. It was smooth, so she had space to make it her own. Traveling home, she took it to her room and sat in the dimming light to look both sword and dagger over.
This was what she was meant to use, a natural weapon that was from the land. It was a good use of the goods she hunted, reminding her that every part of the fauna she killed had value. Be it trade, resources, or food, the entire creature could be and should be used. The metal weapons of the land walkers were weak. Sure they moved faster, but they seemed to lose their edge quickly, and were made in ways unfamiliar to the girl. How would she repair such an item, versus finding new teeth or even forging a new bone dagger in case hers wore out.
Bane leaned back in thought.
She was never meant to go up land, instead she was meant to live in the deep, to fight with her swords and hunt like the other Moakai. Etana might want to leave, to wander and explore, but Bane was content living in the shadows. She had plenty to do and a name to make for herself. The rest would come in time.

Quest ༄ The Hunt Words ༄ 611 Plot ༄ Bane goes hunting with her new weapons, facing a creature she's been excited to catch. She learns that even with the right weapons, it'll take a bit more for her to become a renown huntress of the deep sea.
With her new bone weapons in hand, Bane raced out into the darkness of the sea to begin a hunt. Etana was gone, having traveled up to the surface to spend time with her childhood friend. Bane may be quiet, but that didn't mean she was dumb. She knew those two would be gone for awhile, and might even come back with a child or two. She was happy for her sister, but that didn't mean she envied her.
Bane's wife was the deep sea. Her husband the thrill of the hunt.
Deeper and deeper she went as she tracked her prey, following the signs and respecting the risks. She knew that hunting alone was foolish, so she kept close to the settlements. It was a quick swim back to a place of safety in case she was injured or needed to rest. For now, she was focused on tracking and was excited about what she thought she was following.
Kaimonio were in the area and seemed to have just fed. Bane pushed through chum, ignoring the entrails and keeping her focus. Kaimonio were hunters themselves and there was little warning on if they were around. She gripped her sword tighter and paused to look out. Her bobber glowed above, making it difficult to track the dark shapes of the deep.
All of a sudden, a flash of pale flesh darted by, and then another. More seemed to come out of nowhere, and Bane realized her mistake. She should have known the signs of an infestation, and suddenly she was surrounded by thin bodies of Kaimonio seeking more prey. She slowly put her sword away on her hip, shifted her dagger to her main hand, and lifted her other to cover her bobber.
The area was shrouded in darkness.
She could feel the waters shift and move around her as they circled, and slowly let herself dip lower. She needed to get out of the chum, to let them feed on something else. If she got caught, they'd swarm where her blood spilled out. Hopefully they couldn't hear the furious beating of her heart.
Her feet touched the cool sands and rocks of the floor, chilling them further until they were numb. Above, the Kaimonio continued to swarm, their skin reflecting the light now that her eyes fully adjusted. Bane cursed herself for her foolishness. Why did she go out alone and hunt the hunters? This type of hunt was meant for a group of the most experienced, and she knew better when she saw the warning signs. All she could do now was sink to the floor and hope they'd eventually leave and not seek her below.
After what felt like hours, the reflections of the sea seemed to fade, and all that was left was the mournful echos of the Hoku'wala. Bane knew it was time to get up and go home before the bottom dwellers decided to eat her toes. She kept close to the many rocks of the ocean floor, her mind focused on the path home and keeping an eye out for another infestation. She felt shamed for her foolishness, the confidence having come from the new weapons and the desire to prove herself.
Shaking her head when she arrived to the camp, ignoring the requests of how it went, Bane left to contemplate alone. She'd need years more skill before she even dreamed of taking down a Kaimonio...but she was determined. Yes, Bane would some day forge her own weapons made of the bones of her kills, but for now she needed to forge her skills and senses before she got herself into real trouble.

World Event ༄ Summer Festival Words ༄ 754 Points ༄ 5
Bane wasn't one who enjoyed celebrating in the many festivals of Tendaji. However, there was one thing she could appreciate, and that was the spiritual practices that came with the turning of the tides. Both the Moakai and the Hapuna respected the ocean, in different ways but still based on the same currents. As a result, the summer festivals of Tendaji were something she looked forward to, both for their symbolism of the coming hunting season and the opportunity to reflect and thank the Mother Ocean, Iokaila. While others see the festivals as an opportunity for the diverse community to come together and celebrate their respective gods. To Bane, these festivals represent humility, appreciation for nature, and a chance to honor the gods of the sea.
For the Moakai, summer is a time when our underwater world becomes even more vibrant and teeming with life. As the sun's rays penetrate the surface of the water deeper than before, the corals bloom in a riot of colors, and the aquatic creatures become more active. The Moakai offer gratitude for the bountiful harvests of fish and other underwater treasures that begin to thrive under the warmth of the summer. The Mother Ocean, Iokaila, represents the sustenance the Moakai derive from the ocean and the harmony they share with it. To Bane, Iokaila embodies the interconnectedness of the people with the sea, reminding them to be stewards of their aquatic home. As a huntress, it was not just gathering the best kill, but also giving back to the ocean so they could thrive for years to come.
The summer festivals also serve as a time for personal reflection and spiritual connection. Bane always spent a significant amount of time in the water, and the hunting festivals provide a chance to seek guidance and blessings for a successful season. Bane prays for safety, abundance, and a deep understanding of the sea's mysteries. Some of the festival rituals, including lighting bioluminescent lanterns and singing hymns in harmony with the ocean's gentle currents, create a profound sense of peace and belonging that even she cannot resist being drawn to.
The final act of the festival of the hunt is to go out as a group in a hunting competition. Many of the Moakai compete to see who can bring in the biggest, or the most kills. Bane used to find herself drawn in to the competitive spirit, but now she prefers to go for skill over quantity. Her weapons were sharp, but she lacked the skill to shoot down creatures with a bow. Instead, she used the darkness of the deep to sneak up on the glowing creatures, and finally snagged a kill she would dress in honor of Iokaila. The other hunters returned, some cheering and others a bit at a loss, but all ate well that night as they celebrated another year of a bounty from their mother goddess.
In the past, when Etana was still around, Bane would occasionally be dragged toward the lands of the Hapuna to celebrate with Pello and his family. Now that the two of them had traveled the world, she felt a bit lonely. It wasn't necessarily an emotion she encountered every day, but the sickness would come and go whenever she thought about her sister. Maybe next year, she would find a way to get to Etana and celebrate together, especially if her sister was set on living in the mainland of Tendaji. Bane would never settle there, at least not in this lifetime, and so she would need to make the trips to ensure Pello was treating her sister right.
Heaven's forbid if the two ended up having their own clutch of children. Such a thought was not unwelcome, but Bane wanted to drown herself in the thought of being an aunty that took care of her sister's kids. At least until they were old enough to hunt, then Bane would make sure they knew their way around the ocean and the tools necessarily to make a clean kill.
Smirking at the thought of raising a brood of hunters, Bane was much more optimistic at the concept of children, and maybe even found it tolerable of a thought for her own brood. Shaking her head, she found herself wandering away from the final celebrations, fire explosions in the sky mimickng the colors of the sea, instead sitting farther in the waves and just loosing herself in the pull of her great mother goddess. A festival tradition she shared with none.
