Another year has passed in Tendaji, meaning a new opportunity for the residents to accomplish their goals and dreams. Typically, this is a time for setting promises to oneself and others on what to do in the year ahead. There are many different superstitions on how to make a New Year's Wish: some toss their written wishes into the sea, others will burn them at a shrine, and even more will whisper them to representatives of the gods.
No matter how one goes about doing it, all will take the time to ensure that their wishes and promises have the best chance to come true in the New Year.
[ What is your character's promise for the New Year? Go about their practice of setting their goals and dreams in the way they feel is most important. Maybe they go to the shrines, or wish under a star, or honor the god(s) they follow. The goal of this World Event is to make a wish for the next year however your character chooses fit. ]

Bane 1
Bane was swimming deep in the ocean toward the caves. She was tired of all the festivities and people in her home village, and went for a hunt as an excuse to get away. As she headed deep into the entrance of the caves, Bane settled down to get used to the darkness.
It was beautiful to witness the lights of the caves, subtle as they were. Different than the lights of the deep sea, Bane enjoyed just witnessing them before heading back into the vast expanse that was her hunting grounds.

U'ilani had never been one for festivities. Their mother had tried to coax them into attending a few over the years with the rest of the Kaha'iko, but it had always just left them feeling awkward. They never spent enough time with their mother to truly absorb the culture so it seemed less like an exciting challenge aformnd more like a fight they hadn't prepared for. Thankfully she hadn't asked this year and U'ilani was free to spend the New Year as they pleased.
That is to say, U'ilani planned on welcoming the New Year by taking down the biggest creature they could find! And since they wanted to make a splash they needed to go out of their comfort zone a little which led them to the outskirts of the caves. The large hybrid pushed past a sharpened stone formation and saw...a Moakai?
"Lost?"

Bane 2
It seemed she always stumbled upon one of the locals when she lingered near the caves, which was no surprise. It was the entrance to their domain, and a bit traveling point for those looking to escape the silent darkness. Sometimes, Bane would use her deep coloring to avoid others, hidden well in the shadows. Othertimes, she'd just scowl if any approached. Today she simply lingered, relaxing and not caring too much for the few who traveled back and forth.
Today was nice too because many of the travelers were hunters, and so Bane watched with interest as they moved around with their catch.
That was what she planned to do until she was noticed and quickly approached.
"Not quite. Just resting before I get back to hunting." She said simply, looking at U'ilani with curiosity.

U'ilani casually leaned back against the stone at their back and propped the trident in their hand against their shoulder.
"That so? Find anything good?"
Compared to the Kawena that passed them the larger hybrid stood out. Thanks to U'ilani's mother's blood passage through the caves and smaller tunnels was difficult on the best of days which made their excursions into open water all the more important. Not only was the prey larger out here, but they could actually stretch.

Bane 3
Bane glanced over to U'ilani as they leaned closer, not too bothered considering their energy levels seemed to match. As long as it wasn't too much, Bane was tolerant of others.
"It's a bit bare...I assume most of the travelers has run off the good hunts from the main paths. I'll probably head deeper in a little bit."

"I was hoping to catch a few Nahiisa myself." While a Nahiis was more of a trophy find than anything substantial U'ilani wanted to find a decent one never the less. If they could bring home a kill large enough then everyone would know what they'd known all along; that they were truly amazing.
"There have been reports of a larger beast, biggest we've seen, that's acting out of sorts. Somethings either wrong with it or it's getting cocky in it's size." Either way, U'ilani planned on starting their year off the right way with it's head.

Bane 4
Bane took a moment to look U'ilani over, studying their stature and determining if they were a big-game hunter or someone just looking for a good meal. As they continued on, Bane's eyes narrowed at the thought and prospect, suddenly interested and very happy to be distracted from the festivities. A big hunt? She didn't realize her thoughts echoed U'ilani's own.
It would be nice to demonstrate her skill and value to her family and tribe.
"Population control is an important part of hunting..." She nodded thoughtfully. A great hunter didn't just go for sport, but respected the balance of the waters, "Has anyone seen this beast in person?"

U'ilani rolled the pole of their trident between their forefinger and thumb, allowing the well worn weapon to glide over their calloused palm. "An old man named Fusa claims his daughter was half eaten by one. Everyone whose talked to him can't make heads or tails of it; the marks seem to add up but they're big." Far too big to be any normal beast. It was what had U'ilani hooked and despite their father's warnings, had the, going out to find the thing.
Maybe they'd found someone of a similar mindset? They hadn't thought to find one at all, let alone in a traveling hunter. Still, U'ilani wasn't complaining. "I'm going to guess that you aren't much for festivities so how about we go on a hunt instead? You watch my back and I'll watch yours?"

Bane 5
Her brows raised at that statement, her face curious and her eyes sharp. She was interested now if someone had been bitten and returned. Such a hunt sounded really like a test she was willing to take on, either by herself or with a party.
When U'ilani replied with the offer, Bane's face moved into a rare smile, her teeth showing brightly as she grinned with a determined expression.
"You're speaking my language. The name is Bane. Always nice to encounter a fellow hunter."

Somehow it felt like landing this 'catch' was the hardest part of the upcoming journey. There was an air about her that wasn't the same as other hunters they'd come across, but it didn't deter U'ilani. If anything they preferred it because it meant they wouldn't have to keep up needless conversations. They could just jump to the good part; the hunt itself.
"Same to you. My name's U'ilani and with any luck the two of us can come out of this with the biggest catch of the year. Actually, of a lifetime if I've got anything to say about it." Looking over their shoulder, the younger hunter gave a nod toward the caves. "My suggestion is that we go talk to the old man's daughter first, get her story and move on from them."

Bane 6
She raised a brow at U'ilani's description of the catch, the opportunity of a lifetime? She doubted that, because she didn't want to settle for peaking as a huntress this young, but she found herself getting excited at the thought of a challenge that would push her to grow stronger, face more difficult catches, and come out with new skills (and scars).
It was a delicious idea, and the normally stoic woman began to get a sharp, almost feral look. She was a huntress, and this was a hunt. It meant being hyper focused. She was glad that this hunter stumbled upon her and offered up the news.
"We should get as much information as possible...maybe even something we can use to track..."

This was clearly not the same woman they'd stumbled on not so long ago. That look...It was almost as dangerous as the prey they were about to chase and U'ilani was here for it.
"Follow me then; the sooner we get what we need the faster we can get going." It might be tactless to show up at the old man's house so soon after the attack, especially if his daughter was still being treated, but U'ilani had no doubt that seeing the dismembered corpse of the beast would bring a smile to his face.
"And it goes without saying that after this if you've still a mind for a good hunt feel free to find me."

Bane 7
She nodded, keen to get moving. If she considered being sensitive to the family, it wasn't much of a consideration at all. Instead she was all business, ready to get the information and get the kill. She'd probably bring back a mark for the man if he desired, but really this was a personal gain. She was bored, and to get a new hunt was an attractive way to approach the new year.
"Indeed...I've got some ideas for a hunting guild that I'll tell you along the way." She replied with a smirk, excited to speak with a like-minded individual and finally having someone to talk shop with. It had been a long time.

A hunting guild? U'ilani could get behind something like that provided that everyone involved was actually a decent hunter. Still, if Bane was at the front then it wouldn't likely be something they wanted to miss.
With any luck they could get a band of skilled individuals together to take on massive prey. Creatures that had only been spoken of in legends...U'ilani honestly couldn't wait. It would be a truly exciting way to ring in the new year.
