Prompt
It couldn't be possible. Walkers of land, scale-less and gill-less. Covered in stones and of all sorts of colors. Bringers of creatures never seen before. Unable to venture in the waters, and unaware of your people who resided below.

The stories spread across the lands quickly of the land-walkers who explored the grounds above. At first, the menehune were the watchers of the waters, letting others know of the movements of the Earthling and Alkidike party. But soon enough, they made way to the beaches and rivers, and soon caught sight of those that watched.

Were they friend or foe? Why were they here and what did they want? And why could they walk on land but little else?

So many questions, so many rumors, so many unknowns.

What were your character's initial thoughts when they heard about the Earthling/Alkidike visitors? Were they afraid, or did they want to be the first to meet them? This prompt takes a look at the first-observation prior to contact with the other species. Explore your character's feelings around this monumental moment in Kahikinan history.

Etana shook the hair out of her face, her bobber dancing above her in the water. Down in the depths of Kalei there wasn't much that was able to shake up the town of Kalama, but even this news was able to reach the Moakai in their dark homes.

She had heard it on the pathways that there were land-walkers on the surface, strange creatures that looked nothing like any of the Kahikinans. She didn't want to believe it though, she needed to ask her sister. Bane would know better about what was going on. Maybe she had heard it... or maybe she had heard otherwise. Maybe it was already proven to be a lie. She'd believe that. She just had to find Bane in the home first.

Bane was returning from a hunt, her gaze weary as she saw the commotion of their town. Sure, news traveled to Kalama first, but it was rare to see the Moakai in such a state. The last time they were like this, she recalled, was when the great floods opened the waterways to the rivers and marshes. Or when the earth shook so hard they felt it in the water and discovered a long-lost tribe of cave dwellers.

Bane frowned harder as she shifted her destination from the trade house to her home.

Etana was a bit of a gossip, at least compared to Bane, so her little sister probably already knew all there was to the rumors. Setting her kills to the side of their home, she glanced inside and resisted the urge to sigh when Etana wasn't there. Spinning around with her bobber glowing lightly above her partially shaved head, she glanced out into the chaos (in her mind) of the town to see if she could find her younger sister.

Etana saw the dim light of Bane's bobber before she could clearly see her face, but she swam faster to catch up. "Bane! Did you hear? IS it true?" She started once she was close enough for her sister to hear her words. "They say there are people on land." She shook her head, almost in doubt, but her eyes were lit up like she was intrigued. What were these people like? What did they want?

"You have to have heard something..." She trailed off, waiting for a reaction from Bane. Her sister was definitely more serious than Etana was, and that was saying something. She sometimes didn't want to talk about this kind of stuff with her, but this was big big news.

Sure enough, as soon as her sister appeared through the twilight space, she was rushing over and demanding to know more. Rumors traveled fast, it seemed.

Bane shook her head, her hair and bobber swinging as she did so, "I've been hunting, Etana." She responded simply, her voice nearly monotone and showing no emotion as was typical. Bane was focused, driven, and a bit of an anti-social. Blinking, she floated closer, "I've heard bits and pieces, but I only just got here. Something about another race discovered?"

Etana furrowed her brows, her exasperation showing the only way she knew how. "I was hoping you would have heard something more than I had..." she trailed off.

"I got a letter from Pello and he was saying that there were land walkers that showed up on the shores. Can you believe that? Not just one race, like a bunch of them. He says they all look so different." She started to go on, her hands waving in the water trying to prove her point.

"Really Bane, I think you need to start paying more attention." She scolded her sister like she had any right to do so.

The elder sister pursed her lips together to hide her frustration. Etana was such a compliant sibling before she learned how to roll her eyes. Sometimes it just gave her a headache, and as much as she loved her little sister, she preferred the silence and darkness of the sea.

"Land walkers covered in stones, with eyes like a whetu." Bane said slowly, her forefinger and thumb coming together to circle her eyes and exaggerate the stories she heard, "Younglings mostly speaking about these things...Pello saw one of them?"

Etana nodded her head as her sister spoke. "Yeah, Pello said he was one of the first ones to see them." She started. She didn't have a lot of details, mostly just that little bit and that Pello was going to be coming to Ka'lei soon. "I just think that the stories sound so crazy and blown up, don't you think? But if Pello says it's true that they exist, then what else should we believe, you know?" Once she started talking, she just couldn't stop. Her mind was only going a mile a minute, but her tongue couldn't quite keep up with that.

She crossed her arms over her chest. "Do you want to meet them?" She asked Bane.

Bane nodded, solemn in her response and not one for too many words. She blinked owlishly as she listened, crossing her arms and pondering what her sister said. It did seem as if each story she heard was more exaggerated than the last, and down in the sea it was unlikely many would actually get to see the land walkers.

Etana's question brought her back to the conversation, and she released her arms to shrug in response.

"Doesn't matter me...I've got no need to go topside."

And it was true. Bane wasn't the type to chase a rumor, unless it was for a hunt.

Etana sighed in exasperation and shook her head. Her sister was not just short on words but also very neutral about a lot of things. How could she not want to meet them, or know about them? It was all very strange to Etana. "Well, you should." She pointed out. "When will something this exciting ever happen again?" She motioned with her arms out, her words getting more excited as she spoke. It was almost like Etana needed to be double interested just to make up for Bane's lack of interest.

Bane gave her sister a deadpan look, before shaking her half shaven head.

"It's already happened twice. Meeting the freshwaters, then the caves...this happens a lot, Etana."

Bane then shrugged. It was true, and it felt a bit normal these days that something new would appear. What would happen next, people with wings would fly in like birds?

Bane sighed, "Are you going to go see them, Etana?"

Etana's face turned sour when Bane said it had happened before. "Well... not like this..." she grumbled. Which was also true as far as she was concerned. Sure a lot had happened over the course of the last few years, but these people were totally different, not just other long lost Kahikinans. It was different, and it was weird. They were weird.

She shrugged her shoulders. "I mean... I don't know if I would go see them. But if one was near us?" She shook her head. "Well not near us. We're so deep and they breath air. But - you know what I mean." She hoped her sister did. She wasn't sure she would go off and look for them, but if they were in Kahikina already, why not, right? Unless they weren't friendly.

Bane struggled to relate to her sister, pursing her lips again. This was happening more often than not these days, as Bane began to seek solitude in the sea and her sister grew more and more curious. It wasn't conflict, but it did cause awkward interactions like the one right now. Bane could see it in Etana's expression and hear it in her response.

"I don't think they would come underwater unless they had a way to breathe underwater." Was her slow, thoughtful response, "You've been to the reefs before, if you wanted to go up I'm sure you could easily..." she replied, trying to relate more to her younger sibling.

Etana crossed her arms and pursed her lips, thinking on Bane's suggestion. "But I'm not sure I would want to go alone. That would just be dangerous." she suggested. She may be more curious than Bane, but she still wasn't quite trusting of these new people. They just sounded really new and scandalous. She might be a little bit of a gossip, but she was mostly all talk.

"I don't know. But I'm going to find Pello and talk to him about it and see what he has to say for himself." She decided to Bane. She didn't know how soon she would be able to see her reef friend, but Pello would know more and he was always in and out. "We should go back inside." Etana suggested, motioning for the open door. They had been talking this whole time outside and it was almost dinner by now. "I think mom and dad are waiting for us."

Before Bane could respond, to consider offering something, her sister had quickly moved on to Pello. Bane was happy that Etana had someone who was a friend, and the handful of times she met the reef boy he seemed...positive. He was a positive boy.

"Sure...." She replied, scratching her neck and wondering why Etana didn't want to go explore the deep sea. That, she knew, would be an easy way to bond with her little sister. But it seemed while Bane was content to look into the deep, her sister had her eyes on something else entirely.
