"We're home, Bobby Boy."

The ginger cat's expression failed to change at the new scenery in front of him. He remained in the front passenger seat of the lawyer's Oldsmobile, perched atop a tower of legal encyclopedias, casebooks and statutes. The car ambled down a street that looked suspiciously like it belonged to an older part of the neighborhood and the feline let out an unexcited yawn.

"Yeah, well, you should be up in Omaha or wherever she ran off to."

Green eyes flickered over to the driver, noting the lack of amusement in his expression. His disheveled brown hair was the result of lack of sleep, thanks to the former lady of the house and her effective talent at forcing the young man to remove all of his worldly belongings into a small U-Haul truck all within the course of an afternoon.

The divorce had been gruesome yet short, probably thanks in part to both parties representing themselves at the hearing. The Maine Coon had cared less about the situation - neither adult ever neglected him, he'd trained them properly enough - so he knew he'd be taken care of. It all boiled down to where he'd end up. From the way Amy had been screeching and hollering during their arguments, it appeared that Rob was now the caretaker of one Bob the Cat, whether he wanted to be or not. She had wanted absolutely nothing around to remind her of him, which happened to include his orange furry butt on top of everything else.

Omaha, huh he thought to himself as he studied his surroundings, bet there's a lot of excitement out there.

Granted, he was beginning to think that the boringness of Nebraska was a welcomed bit of quiet and silence. Miles of nothing and basic cable was a fantastic alternative to the amount of dread this place had already instilled in him.

The tingles had set upon him the very moment they'd entered the new city. Destiny City. It was an uncomfortable feeling, one he hadn't felt in a very long, long time. A time when the star on his forehead actually meant something and it wasn't a sign from the heavens that he should be named Starbaby, like Amy preferred to call him. If only things were simple as that.

No, there were two-legged creatures roaming this city that would know what he was about - and he had absolutely no intentions of being found out, not any time soon at least. He would have to be mindful to stay indoors, at least until he figured out a few local hangouts that wouldn't garnish him any attention.

Sigh.

Amy probably didn't even have basic cable anyways.

The silver car pulled into a driveway, Bob first noting the cracks in the cement and then the large oak in the front lawn. Oak meant acorns - he'd have to watch his step. Meh. The house itself was small, but it beat having to stay in some dirty little apartment where the next door neighbor probably had twin yappy dogs that would keep everyone up all night.

He stayed in his spot as Rob shut off the engine, only taking the opportunity to move and stretch when the young man opened the passenger door. Hopping out onto the driveway, he let out another long yawn and stretch before sauntering his way up the pathway towards the front door. The black tie that Rob had placed around his neck one night as a joke (which somehow both looked fitting and never found itself removed) dragged its tip against the dirt until the cat bounced its way up the three stone stairs leading up to the door.

From there, he simply sat and watched as his master struggled to begin unloading the old car.

This was home, sweet home, apparently.

Solo: Adjusting
(WC: 645)

"Blue jean baaaaaby, L.A. Laaaaaady...."

The long, ginger colored tail flicked itself as the slumbering feline cracked one emerald eye open. He'd heard the door open and close without ceremony, heavy footsteps crossing the wooden flooring of the hallway and into the kitchen. The sun was in the process of setting - all was normal in the world of the Banks household - Robert had made it home from work just as on time as he had for the rest of the week. But the music, this was a sign of something else.

"Ballerinaaaaa, must've seen her, dancing in the saaaaaaaand...."

Rising to his paws, the large cat let out a slow stretch, coupled with an exaggerated yawn for no one but himself to notice. His tail brushed itself out of the way as he hopped down to the floor. There was no rush in his descent down the stairs, one slowly after the other. From the sounds of movement, his human had moved his way from the kitchen and out into the den area.

"Hoooold me closer, tiny dancer...."

Elton John's voice echoed through the halls, the Maine Coon's ears tilting backwards at the sheer volume of the song. Usually the TV was blaring at this hour, along with whatever ruckus the lawyer was doing in the kitchen, if takeout wasn't the solution for dinner. But tonight...tonight was clearly a different sort of night.

Padding his way into the den, the first thing that tickled the tiny, cold nose of the feline was the sharp scent of alcohol. It was a welcoming smell, almost a standard in the Banks household. In the leather recliner sat the lawyer, tie undone yet still dangling from his neck, barely covering the opened buttons at the top of his dress shirt. The glass tumbler was only half full of clear, brown liquid - it was a rum night, it seemed.

Hopping up on the ottomon, orange tail curled around him as he stared down at the young man. Rob was in his own world, head resting back against the stiff recliner as the music continued playing.

Queen's Somebody to Love came on as Elton's song dwindled into nothing, the melody forcing a string of curses from the human as his hand moved to fumble for the iPod's remote, quick to hit the Skip button as soon as his fingers found it.

Ah, so tonight was a reminiscing night, then.

Bob moved forward, walking across his owner's leg as he made his way into Robert's lap. This resulted in another curse and a short "not now, Bob", which the cat promptly ignored. Instead, he curled up into the man's lap, ensuring a fresh layer of orange on top of his pinstripe slacks. A half-hearted shove was attempted before Rob returned to nursing his glass.

"Meow."

The request was calm, but clear. Rob rolled his eyes as he finished the glass, then set it to the side on the end table. Pouring himself a refill was a difficult task with a twenty pound cat on his lap, but he managed - there was some experience in the gesture.

"Meow."

"Can't you see I want to be left alone, you mangy thing?"

Green eyes stared soulfully into hazel ones. Then: "Meow."

"Whatever."

The glass tumbler suddenly appeared in front of the cat, who was quick to nestle it awkwardly between both of his front paws. His body remained sprawled across the human's lap, tail resting alongside one (now fur-covered) leg. His head dipped down and his tongue began to quietly lap at the brown liquid, the burn an enjoyable sting as he slowly consumed the glass.

Robert shook his head again, but said nothing. He simply plucked up the bottle and took a swig while his free hand moved down to gently rub the cat's back, soon rewarded with a low, lumbering purr.

Solo: First Impressions
(WC: 622)

It was late in the evening when Bob decided it was time to start exploring his new neighborhood. He'd kept himself locked inside the dusty old house for almost a week now and he was beginning to feel a bit of cabin fever. Shoving things off shelves had lost its humor, as did wandering into the closet or digging into drawers to add extra cat hair to Robert's belongings. There was just no appeal in being mischievous, not when there was a giant new world outside just begging to be explored.

Wedging the window up hadn't been hard - heck, Amy and Rob had installed a pet door at their last home, maybe it should be something he eventually should point out for Rob to do once again. After all, all it would take would be a few dozen scratch marks against the white paint of the door to get the message across. Squeezing himself through the freshly-made wedge was a bit harder, but not an impossible feat. His head managed well enough, his body was the struggle. A deep suck-in breath, a shimmy and pop, he was one free tom cat.

The stars were dancing up above and the air was blessedly warm for a May evening. Paws trotted their way down the dark shingles of the rooftop as the feline made his acrobatic descent towards the grass below. One hop to a window ledge, then to the carport and - success - a perfect landing on the driveway.

While the stars were out, the moon was barely a sliver. The light was dim, his sight still adjusting to the darkness of the evening, as opposed to the lamp lit bedroom he'd been residing in only minutes earlier.

He made his way down the block, only turning once the sidewalk turned into street. The houses all looked similar: old, dusty, lots of trees. Maybe if he was lucky, some of the neighbors had some cats that had tendencies to wander at night. Female cats, in particular.

Thoughts of meeting a gaggle of new lovely ladies kept his thoughts preoccupied - so preoccupied in fact, he wasn't aware he was being followed until a wayward twig snapped beneath his stalker's foot.

The hair on the back of his neck began to prickle as he heard a low growl rumble only yards behind him. This was a sound that stirred a primal fear from within him, a concern no senshi or negaverse agent could create in him. No, this was the last thing Bob had counted on running into, the least on his list of worries when he'd wiggled from behind the window.

This was his natural enemy.

Dog.

Turning around, nails clicked the sidewalk as he came face to face with a large, rather perturbed looking German Shepard mix. Where in the world was this jerk's owner? Didn't they know about leash laws in this city?

"Hey there fleabag, why don't you scram or something?"

Having the ability to speak human seemed to have little effect on Fido, whose teeth remained visible as he took a step forward. The human voice talking to him did little to slow him down, even as Bob quickly emitted a loud "STAY" just for the heck of things.

"Aw, crap, really?"

If the dog had been any smaller, Bob might have even considered ignoring it, maybe swiping at it. But even for being a twenty pound cat, this dog was large and large meant in charge in this particular situation.

So Bob did the only thing Bob was willing to do.

Bob ran. Bob ran fast and didn't look back until he was safe and secure on top of his roof once more.

So much for exploring that evening.

Meh.
