[ღ S ღ] The Man In The Mountains [ღ S ღ] [- 1,037 words -] [- Sauti -] The weather was chilled as the sun hid behind the mountains, often leaving the land damp and cool until the mid-day. Four travelers were settled near one of the many lakes of Sauti, sitting around a camp and speaking softly to one another. It had been months that they traveled across their home land, wandering from settlement to settlement as the nomads they often were regarded as. Each member of the party seemed different, but all shared a similar trait in their soft blonde hair and bright pink crystals. Each member was part of the Wind tribe, and each seemed worn yet determined to reach their goal.
The tallest and the eldest of the party was the elder brother, a tall man named Orivato. With scars littering his fare skin, he was clearly a brawler who stood up for the rest of his siblings. His light blonde hair was cut short but wavy, falling down from the pressure of the damp air. A few strands fell into his sea blue eyes, and he brushed them out before looking forward. Out of the four siblings, he was the most athletic and determined, leading the group and keeping a sharp eye out for predators and enemies alike.
Another platinum blonde was more petite than the others, and was actually the youngest sibling and brother. Chardae was still just a child, young and not yet developed of muscle or voice. He was a trickster and playful thing, and loved teasing his siblings and getting away with it. Out of the four, he complained almost the loudest, bu the was the most energetic and able to keep up with Orivato ahead.
The middle two siblings, the sandy haired twins, were Carminer and his sister Estivati. Both more robust than their brothers, they indulged the most in fine drink and company, social and playful with any they encountered. Estivati was a flirt, but she knew how to work a deal and work a partnership. She was determined and shrewd, and didn't let anyone take advantage of their family. She also was a bit of a driver, and pushed her siblings almost as much as Orivato pulled.
Carminer, on the other hand, was the most lax of the siblings. Often with a wine skin in his hand, he was the one who encouraged them to relax and have fun, being that voice of temptation. The siblings didn't mind, and often joined him in his indulgences, spending the evening celebrating their day. He didn't care what his influence on them was, really, as long as he had some sort of positive influence. And if it helped them smile and cheer up, well it was no issue to him.
All of the siblings grew up living a simple life, but all of them also felt a strange call of the mountains. When they were finally old enough to set out, the four of them had left their home and traveled north into the mountains where many of their family currently resides. They visited their cousins down in the lush settlement of Kesris, before moving north to Rayf and finally Coeld to meet with their hybrid cousins of the north. But still, they didn't find any sort of settlement that called to them.
Always they went back to the mountains, where they remembered an old man that would help them break a fever.
Their grandfather was one who took care of them while they were sick, but as they grew older he disappeared into the mountains. Some said that he left to die, whereas others said he fled to find a long lost love. No matter what the story, all in the family believed he was heading off to pass along and take the last story they all remembered. The story of their family legacy.
Carminer was one who would never forget such a tale, one that inspired him to take up the drink. Their family was once known for a great wine empire, one that was known across Tendaji. Eventually, a great storm decimated their crop, and they were forced to take up a new art and store their leftovers away. The drink eventually ran out, but the family continued to pass down the process with the hope that one day their legacy might re-emerge. Carminer, and his siblings, felt the urge to hunt through the mountains and find the man.
It was a foolish search, they all knew, but one they wanted to complete before it was too late. Now, they traveled together with determination to find their grandfather. They don't know what he would tell them, or why they even wanted to find him, but maybe once they see his face they will be ready to move past the borders and head some place new...together.
Carminer, with all his foolish hope, continued to encourage them. If anything, it would be a great journey they could tell to their family upon their return. Yet, deep inside he hoped he would discover something more. Maybe the process to make the great wine of their past, or maybe just a few leftover drops, but he did hope he would re-discover his grandfather and hear the tale one last time. It was a memory, one that drew him forward and toward his future.
Esti was optimistic, and claimed she would be best to run the business side of things. Chardae, with all his artistic talents, claimed he would build pots to store the wine and help tend to the flora. Orivato, the most pessimistic of the group, simply said he would ensure no harm came to his family in the journey to come. If he meant simply the trip, or forever, Carminer did not know.
All he could do was enjoy the company of his siblings, the journey ahead, and the dream of becoming someone great surrounded by wine, women, and a good time. It was a nice dream to have, and one that kept him moving as his feet began to hurt and his body grew tired. He had hopes, but until he saw the grandfather in the mountain, all he could do was eat, drink, and be merry with his siblings on this journey.

[ღ S ღ] Determination [ღ S ღ] [ Class Affinity Solo ] [- 1,045 words-] [- Sauti -] "Are you sure about this?"
It was a soft question, after a long journey, but it stuck in his mind well past the time it took for the words to fade into nothing. Are you sure about this? About this journey, about this commitment, about this responsibility? Are you sure about this?
Carminer was slightly bitter as he walked away from his siblings. They were at the base of one of the larger mountains, with the hope that they would eventually be able to scale it and find their grandfather. Such a feat, based on rumors and speculation, was not something he could be optimistic about. It would be like hunting for a menk in the bottom of the largest pool of Sauti. Impossible, or at least as close to impossible as can be.
As he settled his body on a nearby rock, Carminer focused on what Orivato asked. It wasn't as if his elder brother was trying to dissuade him, but instead simply test his commitment. Out of the four of them, he was the most invested yet most lazy. Orivato had the strength of body and will to protect the siblings, training each day and protecting them from savage beasts and earthlings alike. He was determined to fight and stand strong, and knew his future would lie in protecting their business if they were successful. With success, came risk, and Orivato was there to ensure that risk wouldn't hurt them.
Esticava was shrewd, and determined, and she was perfect to run the business of the family. She had the skill and know-how to keep an eye out for potential opportunities and investors, and was often sauntering around to ensure that whatever effort they made would not be in vain. Although she wasn't the strongest, or the smartest in skill, she was determined and able to make a name for them. She knew her fate was meant to travel and promote, and she was quite happy to do so.
Sweet little Chardae, the starry eyed sibling who would follow them anywhere. He was quite skilled in making a mess, and often would practice sculpting the soft muds of the lands into potential pots. Although he didn't have the energy or thoughts of the job, he was ready to help create tools to sculpt and hold their wine when it was made. Out of all of them, Chardae was the most willing to get dirty, and that would be needed if they discovered the process to making their drink.
Are you sure about this?
Carminer grumbled as he thought. His job was the most fluid, yet the most important in the family. As a taster of wines, he would need to be the one who actually created the drink, from start to finish, and own the process. It was quite a responsibility, and one he had never had in his entire life. His siblings, he could tell, didn't think he'd be up for the task. Maybe he wasn't, but no one knew until they got there.
Just the fact he was taking the long journey across the land should be enough to express his interest, if not dedication. Surely they could see he was committed if he was willing to travel without shelter, with limited food and with even less energy. Every day he walked until his feet bled, and then they hardened and broke once more. Every day he grumbled and complained but continued to move, because there was no point to give up. He was too far in, too dedicated to his curiosity to give up and head home.
So, how could they question him?
Sure, he was boisterous and distractable. He enjoyed drinking the wines and sprites of the world, and he got distracted with the bodies of the earthlings around him. But didn't that make him one of the best in terms of actually knowing what he was doing. He knew the taste of each berry, and he could tell when something was too sour or timed just right. He was seasoned enough to have a palette that could recognize a mead from Oba against one from Matori, even with their similar flavors. He could distinguish where the bitters in beers came from, although he was more attuned to sweet and dry over those types of tastes.
Overall, he was proud of his craft, and he actually took an interest in the drink beyond simply the warm feeling it gave his fingers, toes, and nose.
Are you sure about this?
Yes, he was sure. From deep in his heart he was sure he would do anything to change the face of the world around him. Although he was a bit lazy, he was determined to make a name for himself and his family. He didn't know the work requirements, but that didn't stop him from wanting to learn. Oh no, it actually made wine and spirits one of the few things he enjoyed, it made it one of the few things that kept his interest.
How could they think that he wouldn't be certain that he would travel up the mountain, and become a wine vintner? He may test more than they sell, but he knew what meant nice taste, what was quality over quantity, what would sell.
Moving to stand, Carminer felt confidence flood his system. They were so close to arriving at the mountain, the one they figured their grandfather had traveled. There was no certainty that he would be there, but they hoped he had some sort of document with the process for their family's wine. They needed something, anything, to develop this legacy, and their hope resided in a legend that was hidden away. Just like the great fire birds, this was a fleeting dream of limited potential. But they had to believe, Carminer had to believe.
He was determined that this was his fate, that he would become this even if others looked at him as a laze and a failure. No matter what they said, he would find his grandfather, learn his trade, and develop a legacy.
"Are you sure about this?"
Carminer grinned at his brother upon his return, picked up his pack and nodded at his family.
"Of course I'm sure, let's go."

[ღ Q ღ] Family Legacy [ღ Q ღ]
[ After meeting with the old man/grandfather and discovering that he is dying, Charminer and his brother Chardae are determined to learn as much as they can before he passes away. They must find a way to learn how to brew the special drink from the old man. The old man has given them the knowledge, but cannot collect the items he needs to show them how to brew the drink. They must go back down the mountain and get enough berries to create enough drink, bring them back, and make a batch of the drink before the old man passes away. ] [- 1,528 words-] [- Sauti -] Carminer was stunned as he sat there in the cave, trying to understand everything that was going on. Somehow, against all odds, his siblings were able to hunt down their grandfather. The man was old, so old he hardly moved about the damp location as he was wrapped in thick furs. So old that he was all but skin and bones, withering away in the darkness of the cave. So old that Carminer was worried that they might not have long before he finally passes on to the other land and to the gods.
They spent some time speaking with the old man in detail. He was quite adamant about the family process, encouraging almost at the fact that the siblings were just as dedicated as he. However, there were some downsides to it as well. Although he had the means to create the devices to break down the berries, drain them, and store them to be fermented into a sweet wine. The issue was that the berries once used no longer existed, and that there was little time for the family to grow the berries while their grandfather still stood.
No, they needed to find some source, procure enough berries to make the wine, and bring it back to actually practice the process.
It was determined after lengthy discussion that Carminer and Chardae would travel back down the mountain. Estivati would work on documenting the process the best she could while Orivato would work on building the devices to drain the grapes. Hopefully Carminer and Chardae would be able to return before their grandfather passed, as it seemed he was under some sort of distress.
So, taking heed of what little time they had, Chardae and Carminer took off away from the cave in the mountains to find some sort of berry.
"So...this should be fun..." Chardae said a bit hesitantly as they scaled down the path, avoiding large rocks and using the tall ones as a brace. Carminer let out a bit of a laugh.
"Indeed, tell me Chardae, have you seen any berries that are bright in color, round in quality, and taste vibrant and pure without a sour note?" as jovial as he sounded, Carminer was a bit skeptical too, "Oh yes, and they must grow tall on a vine, preferably in a cool climate with limited foliage around the area to take away from their growth..."
"It does sound as if we are on a hunt..."
Chardaes soft response caused another snort to roll from Carminer's lips, but he patted his younger brother on the head with good nature.
"Remember, little brother, that the old man is citing an age-old tradition...one that died off...we must simply look outside of the box, so to speak. We may not find vines, but there have to be berries...did we cross any on our travels?"
The two grew silent the rest of the trip down the mountain, both softly commenting occasionally but disagreeing with seeing berries. Even the ones they recalled weren't for eating, which meant they were out of luck. Both did not want to try to use non-edible berries and test their luck, their grandfather was ill enough as is and they would not be the ones to finish him off.
As they got closer to the ground, Carminer took a moment to enjoy the dips of the land around him. He could see the deep pools of the larger lakes, contrasting with the tall peaks of the mountains. Sauti, out of all the lands, had the most personality in his opinion. As he looked at the waters from the distance, he remembered an interesting feature that actually was popular in the area.
"The lilly pads!" He cried out, startling Chardae who was spacing out at the time, "In the lakes, they have berries!"
Both boys looked at each other with renewed hope, and rushed faster to get deep into the pools of the land.
As they got closer to the lakes, Chardae brought up their next challenge, "How do you want to transport them back?"
Carminer was at a loss. It wasn't like he planned ahead, that was Estivati's expertise. Now, he was the initiator, the one who thought of the big dreams and just let others make them happen. Now, with his younger brother who was only looking to follow, he needed to figure it out. It was not a simple task.
Carminer wasn't one to take control of a situation that didn't involve women or festivities. No, he was the noteworthy lazy man of the family. Growing up, he was content to sit back and let Orivato fight for their honor, or Esti to control their adventures and deligate tasks. Heck, he even let Chardae be the goofball when the little guy grew enough confidence. All he did was sit back and bask in the rewards of their troupe, but now his safety net was gone.
Chardae, bless his heart, wasn't the leader and probably never would be. Although he was more focused, Carminer knew the boy liked to follow his elder siblings. Without Esti and Orivato, they were left on their own, and Carminer for once in his life had to take control of a situation.
"What...do you think?" He asked slowly, before Chardae sent him a look and rolled his eyes. Pausing their walk, Carminer thought of what the old man had told them, as limited as it was. They needed a good deal of berries, which meant they needed some sort of way to carry it. Either a cart or a Capramel would work quite well. But they needed to transport it, which meant some sort of bag or tarp.
He took a moment to explain it to his brother, who seemed to agree and present his own ideas. They both determined it would be a good idea to find a traveling merchant, and they took a detour to a nearby settlement. They were able to barter what little they had for an older Capramel and a traveling pack, two baskets that would hold enough berries to hopefully help the old man show the process. Chardae, the blessing he was, also purchased a few pots to store the juice when they were finished; although Carminer wasn't certain it would hold everything.
Now, with transport, a way to carry the berries and a way to store the juice, the two headed toward the waters of the lake. Carminer grinned a bit at the sight of the floating berries, and the two waded into the water to begin sorting through the berries. They used the bags when they realized they floated to sort the berries and keep the ones that were round, bright, and appeared juicy.
After a few days of sorting and being soaked, the two brothers finally finished their search and had a full basket of berries. Now came the long trip back up the mountain to their grandfather. It seemed as if the trip back up was quicker than the one down, despite the travel with the extra weight and creature. The brothers were jovial, laughing and joking about the opportunity all the way up to the cave where they were greeted by the grim looks of their siblings.
"You took long enough..." Esti greeted first.
"He's gotten worse..." Orivato responded with his grim tone.
All of the siblings quickly moved the berries inside the cave, where the old man was no bedridden. While they were gone, Orivato seems to have put together a giant wooden press with the rocks the area. It was quite the design, and the man slowly directed them to place the berries in the press. Beneath was a bucket of some sort. As they worked throughout the night, they pressed the berries twice before they collected the juices and began to transfer them into the pots. As they finished, the old man was asleep, and they looked on in silence.
"All we can do is wait..." Estivati finally spoke up, before turning and walking to where she had set up her bed. Chardae all but stumbled his path to his own bed, his hands stained with the color of the berries. Orivato nodded and walked away as well, leaving Carminer to look on at their juice and their work. It would take months for him to see if it would work. As he moved to head off, a weak voice called out to him, and Carminer turned.
"Bring...the juice...m'boy"
Carminer got a cup of the juice, walking over and helping his grandfather sip at the sweet liquid, "Carminer...it's perfect...you did well my son. Keep it clean...keep it tight...and try to mix things up...be innovative...and make...me proud..."
As the man drifted back to sleep, Carminer leaned back and considered the option. They had a process, they had a recipe, and they had people willing to try their stuff. With the time he had now, and the determination, all that was left was to take control and let things roll. He was ready, it was time to get this process going.
