The Unknown Future 8 Years Earlier
"Mommy!? Daddy!?" the cries of a small Orderite flowed through a little camp on the southern end of Serenia.
"Shut up, girl." a strange old Orderite and Dovaa Hybrid said, gripping the girl by her arm tighter and dragging her from her position towards a small cave; only to toss her down on the ground when she arrived. "Now stay there and shut your mouth. I don't want to hear a peep out of you." the man scolded as the girl began to lose control of her strength and sob. The man shifted the earth beneath him to create a solid door behind him as he left.
"A-are you okay?" a small voice spoke from deeper within the cavern.
The small Orderite cringed as she turned around to view another Orderite just a few years or so older than herself. "Here." she said with a flick of her fingers to produce a small ball of white light that floated elegantly around it's maker. Her long, wavy light-blonde hair and moon-like skin glimmered with the light. Her piercing baby-blue eyes shown love and compassion, even at her young age. She was rather small in stature, but even with their current situation, she stood as tall as a tower and kept a smile upon her countenance. "Everything will be alright, I promise." she reassured the small, pink haired angel. Those words continued to leave a lasting impression on the young girl, often flowing through her thoughts whenever she needed it the most.
Everything will be alright... Will be alright... Be alright... Alright...
~~~
Present Day
"Odette, wait up!" came a call from the forest floor.
"No time. We have to go. The Mara are coming and we have to protect the coven." the pink haired Orderite said as she sprinted back towards their beloved community, wings flared and ready to take flight.
A mile of swift flight and jogging later, Odette reached the edge of the hillside on Serenia, where their community was stationed. Moments after, Evesi appeared over the horizon, only to overlook the destruction. Mara were everywhere, overtaking everything and everyone. Screams and cries could be heard from the hilltop in which the two Orderites stood.
Tears welled up in both girl's eyes, and soft sobs from the mage could have been heard had the screams from the civilians within the city been quieter. Odette clenched her fists and a look of absolute determination overcame her. The Mara had just struck down their entire community, enslaving the people and taking their possessions. Very few of the civilians seemed to be okay; just looking down over what used to be their home, the two girls could see the many bodies of their "family" laying lifelessly upon the ground. Blood and gore strewn and splattered about the cobblestone streets and little cottages their people had built over the years there.
Evesi fell upon the ground, shaking her head in disbelief at the sight before her while Odette turned around, eyes closed tightly to hold back her tears, listening to the piercing sounds of discord and destruction the Mara had brought with them.
"Lets go." Odette uttered quietly, fists still clenched as tight as ever.
Evesi's tear filled face looked up at her comrade. "We can't just leave! Our family is down there being torn apart. We have to do something...we have to save-" she began, being cut off by the other.
"And how do you expect us to do that?!" the Orderite raged. "I haven't even gone through my Dokima and all you have is some light magic from yours. Not nearly enough strength and power to take down an entire raid like this. Come on. Lets go before we're seen." Odette snapped angrily.
'Everything will be alright.' Odette thought to herself as she began her trek down the hillside, the final screams of her people still ringing in the air.
Evesi turned around to take one last look at the horror that had become their home and knew that what Odette had said was indeed total truth. She stood silently, tall and as strong as she could muster; yet her lip quivered in pain and sadness. She kissed her left fore and middle fingers and pointed it out over the small village. "May the love of Seren be with you all in death as she has been with you in life." she stated, tears streaming down her strong face. She then leaned down to pick up her ever-growing staff and scurried to follow after Odette.
Everything will be alright.
Finding Home Days had come and gone, Odette and Evesi were both weary of their future. Where were they to go? What were they to do? Their home had been utterly destroyed by the Mara invasion and they were on their own from that point forward. Even finding little to eat and dealing with other angry Orderites didn't deter the determined. Odette couldn't wait to find a place to call home or at the very least shelter of some sort.
Their night in the barn was the best night they had had since their sudden departure from the coven. It wouldn't have been so bad if the sun wasn't high in the sky, beating down on the two. They couldn't wait for darkness to envelop them once again, as traveling by night was much more cool and the two weren't as weary by that time.
Finding food was the worst part about the entire experience. The two lived off of what rations they had been able to get from the woman at the barn for two days. Now, they had either become extremely lost or had gone in the wrong direction, as the directions stated by the kind Orderite led them nowhere but forested area.
Or at least that's what they thought...
"O-Odette! Is...is that a city gate!?" Evesi screamed as she noticed something at the horizon.
With squinted eyes, Odette began to focus in on what Evesi was talking about. Off into the distance, they could begin to see a large wall, one that looked like it could be a city's wall. With eyes wide and smile growing, Odette nodded with intensity and began to flap her little pink wings as hard as she could towards their newest destination. The other Orderite followed suit.
After a few moments, and a burst of energy gone, the two walked into the city through a beautiful gate. The two were pleased to finally have made it to some sort of safe haven. They walked through the city's main streets and noticed all the hustle and bustle that was this city. The two were overwhelmed with how many other people were here, and were both on guard for any suspicious actions towards them.
"Such a big city," Odette began. She was unsure of what such a large place could do to her and her companion. "Where do we even start?" she concluded.
"I...I don't know. I guess we should talk to some townsfolk. But be on your guard. You know what the Coven used to say about outsiders." Evesi warned. Of course, the two girls agreed that little conversation between them and the outsiders was best.
Over the course of a few hours, the two had found out much information about the town. So much for little conversation. They had made a couple of different acquaintances who showed them around Ashen City. They even were given enough gold by a few strangers to stay in the local inn for a few nights. It was also stated that if Odette wished to do her Dokima, it would be necessary to visit the matriarch of the Order, Aevah Avii in the Citadel of the Order.
It was then that Odette had determined her next step was to acquire her weapon of choice. The appointment was set, and she was ready to speak with this so called, Aevah.
Meeting Aevah Odette walked through the streets of Ashen City for an hour before her nerves settled. She was going, alone, to talk to the leader of the Orderites, Aevah Avi, in order to obtain her bound weapon. When she lived at the Coven, the people there had to go through their Dokima, a ritualistic quest to obtain their sought power. It didn't matter who you were, Orderite, Oblivionite, Dovaa, or Hybrid. Everyone at the Coven had to go through their Dokima before they were considered an actual resident and trusted confidante. But, sadly, the Mara invasion stunted her quest early. Now, she was seeking others for help, and when her and Evesi arrived in Ashen City, they were told that Aevah Avi could help her with her quest for power. The next step, to grow the courage necessary to speak with the woman.
Odette paced back and forth along the cobblestone streets outside of the Citadel. The building was so large, she had never seen such a sight in her entire life. Something so large. Something so immaculate. The largest things they had in the Coven were the guard towers. This didn't even compare. It was like an entire city could fit within this very building.
Nevertheless, the Orderite clenched her fists and walked up to the oversized doors. The guards opened them as she approached and she walked inside. The inside was just as beautiful, if not more so, than the outside. Her jaw dropped. She was so sad Evesi had to miss this extravagant display; though she would tell her all about it when this little adventure was over.
There were guards stationed at every door. There were people everywhere. Those who seemed of similar age to Odette herself, older kids around Evesi's age, and even adults were strewn about the building and everyone seemed as though they had a place to be right away.
As the Orderite made her way through the Citadel, she couldn't help but stop and stare at some of the kids she passed. They were learning magic, taking classes on using weapons, practicing and working out, it was amazing what this one building contained. A place for just about everyone. Hopefully she could make her home here as well someday. Evesi as well.
Finally, after being twisted around and lost for an hour, she found the door which led to her future. Aevah was just beyond the wall and she could sense the power radiating from the room. Her excitement level was almost uncontrollable. Though she kept her composure, she couldn't contain a small squeal of excitement as she took a deep breath and entered the room.
"Welcome, Child. Please, come in." the woman said, her voice majestic like that of an angel.
Odette silently entered the room, nervous as any would be, meeting the most powerful Orderite alive. She stood at the entryway for what seemed to be an eternity, until the woman spoke up again.
"Don't be afraid. What is your name?" Aevah asked, a smile upon her lips.
"M-my name is Odette. Odette Duperion." the quivering voice of the child cracked with the utterance of every word.
"It's quite nice to make your acquaintance, Odette. What can I help you with today?"
"I'm looking to do my Dokima." she asked, a bit more confident this time around.
The woman gave her a puzzled stare. "I beg your pardon. Your...what?"
Odette gulped. Did she not understand? Did she say it wrong? Nerves began to overcome her. "M-my Dokima, miss. The quest to obtain my chosen power." she stated, as respectful as she could.
"You're referring to choosing your weapon, yes?" the woman questioned curiously. "I've never heard it referred to as a 'Dokima' before." she concluded.
Odette raised a brow slightly, curious as to how the strongest Orderite of them all had never heard of a Dokima. But the girl nodded her head nevertheless.
"Well, if it's a weapon you've come for, I have many to choose from. But, you must first choose your given specialization. From there, we have subclasses of weapons you may choose from. What will it be, hmm? Warrior, Mage, Archer, or Barbarian?" Aevah asked, pulling out some pad and paper in order to write down the specifics of this interaction.
Odette gazed wildly at the woman. What was she talking about? She didn't have to leave the place and find some sort of weapon from a caravan? Shocked, she looked at her and thought about the words she had said. Which specialization? She quickly imagined herself as a Warrior, then a Mage, Archer, and Barbarian. She felt the most secure with archery, considering she used to play with a bow and arrow when she was in the Coven. Plus, her friend Evesi was a mage, and she could barely take care of herself as it were.
"I believe I would choose the path of an Archer, miss Avi." she said.
"Very well." Aevah stated, getting up from her large desk and walking to a weapons cabinet. One of the many in the room. "Which type of archery weapon would you like to imprint on? The weapon will grow as you grow, will gain strength and power as you, yourself do. It's a part of you. So choose carefully and wisely." she finished, allowing the young Orderite to visit the cabinet.
Gazing upon the contents of this weapon cabinet, Odette felt the pressure of choice. A bow sat in the corner, which was most likely the most popular of them all; but rummaging through some things, she found what seemed to be disks, plain wooden disks from the look of it. Her eyes narrowed a moment as she picked one up. From that very moment, she felt a strange connection with it. Power entered the small, boring piece of wood and it gleamed with light a moment before growing a small inner handle and very sharp, metallic, pointed edges. She turned her attention to Aevah, who stood over her with a smile.
"That, my dear, is a Chakram. It's like a boomerang blade. Very sharp to the touch, but it's imbued with magic to always return to you, it's owner, with every throw and toss. It's a beautiful weapon. Now, your path is clear. Take care, Odette, and may the light of Seren always guide you." Aevah said, returning to her desk.
With that said, Odette quickly and excitedly returned to the alley where Evesi was to meet her. She couldn't wait to show off her new weapon, try it out, and tell Evesi all about her experience in the Citadel.
Striking Realization Returning home from her victorious splendor with the unit, she had learned that, in order to be thought of as more important to the Orderite society, she needed to turn in dragon orbs to Aevah Avi.
"Eve! I did it! I killed a dragon...and some huge spiders!" Odette announced, more excitedly than she had almost ever announced anything...ever.
Completely shocked by the news, Evesi smiled in return, got up, and walked over to her best friend. "Ah! I'm really glad to hear that you're alright." she said, wrapping her arms around her. "I've been training with the mage trainer, learning all about the healing properties that can be tapped into. It's really great to learn. I'm so glad we made it to the city. And the people here have been so kind when it comes to getting an education. I can't believe they even gave us a place to stay in their dorms!" she stated, sounding extremely grateful for everything and everyone in Ashen City.
Odette nodded in agreement. She hadn't been this happy or excited in quite some time. Her life was beginning to prosper and she enjoyed every moment of it. "I've made an appointment to speak with Aevah again." she said.
"Oh, to turn in your dragon souls?"
Odette nodded, confused as to how Evesi knew about it.
"I was told that turning in these orbs were a sign of growth in a person. Being able to prove that you're worth something. Like a badge of honor. Just like we'd go through our Dokima to show we've grown and matured." Evesi stated.
"Yeah, about that. I haven't really seen you much since my last meeting with Aevah. You knew about me choosing my weapon. But she's never once heard of a Dokima. They're so strange here. Everything is run so differently than they were in the Coven." Odette said, strolling over to take a seat on the bed next to Evesi, scooting some of her books out of the way in order to make a seat for herself.
"I've noticed. Things are much different here than they were in the Coven. But I love it here...so much more. The Coven wasn't home..." Evesi said, somber as ever, looking as though she was a million miles away.
Odette, concern on her face, spoke up. "Eve...are...are you okay?" she said, placing a hand on her companion's shoulder.
Snapping back to reality, Evesi suddenly began to smile. "Yes, yes, of course I'm okay. Don't you worry about me, now. You have to prepare meeting with the leader of the Orderites tomorrow."
"Tell me...what's going on?"
"Odette..."
"Evesi...come on. What is it? Why did you say that the Coven wasn't really home? Why did you look lost?"
"Odette..." she began, but before anything else, tears began to well up in her eyes. "...do you not remember?" she whispered, head hung low to the ground.
"Remember...what?" Odette asked, now extremely concerned for her friend.
As Evesi regained her composure, she spoke softly. "What the Coven was? What they did?"
Upon hearing that and seeing the pain on her friend's face, Odette shook her head slowly, eyes darting all over the room. She began to remember something. Slowly but surely, it came into view. A scene from her childhood.Childhood Recollection "Mommy!? Daddy!?" the cries of a small Orderite flowed through a little camp on the southern end of Serenia.
"Shut up, girl." a strange old Orderite and Dovaa Hybrid said, gripping the girl by her arm tighter and dragging her from her position towards a small cave; only to toss her down on the ground when she arrived. "Now stay there and shut your mouth. I don't want to hear a peep out of you." the man scolded as the girl began to lose control of her strength and sob. The man shifted the earth beneath him to create a solid door behind him as he left.
The small Orderite cringed as she turned around to view another Orderite just a few years or so older than herself. "Everything will be alright, I promise." she reassured the small, pink haired angel. Those words continued to leave a lasting impression on the young girl, often flowing through her thoughts whenever she needed it the most.
Everything will be alright... Will be alright... Be alright... Alright... Tears filled the eyes of the young apprentice. She had remembered for the first time in ages what her young self had forced from her mind so long ago. Evesi's sweet, kind voice calming her with words of love.
The two shared the night together, realizing that they were home once more. Home in their true home. Ashen City, where both girls were kidnapped from as just youngsters. All they knew were each other, but now...now they had realized they were home.
Truly home.
And everything was alright.
Giving of the Orbs It had been months since returning to Serenia from their adventure to Eowyn. Both Odette and Evesi were strained from their time off of the light lands. It took them both a while to fully recover. Odette continued to train with her units, going out for battle now and again to train nearby the city's grounds. Evesi cooped herself up in the Citadel's library and studied day and night about the different light magics and spells she could cast. She was definitely one to keep to herself and with her other newfound friends in the mage classes.
The two kept in contact daily, even if they were both busy doing their own thing day to day. They also both promised each other that they would go speak with Aevah to turn in their orbs to be considered for the promotion within the Orderite community. Finally, that day had arrived. The two of them came together and decided to go speak with Aevah at once.
"Are you ready?" Odette asked, her heart fluttering with each and every word. She was nervous to speak to the strongest Orderite amongst them; but she was seemingly kind and oh so beautiful. Odette hardly ever had words around her.
"Mhmm. Are you?" Evesi countered.
"As ready as I'll ever be." Odette concluded.
The two of them walked up to the large door. Knock. Knock knock. The voice of the woman behind the door was angelic and magical. "Come in." she ordered.
The two Orderites slowly opened the door, both with the most nervous of smiles upon their faces.
"You've come. Welcome. How are both of you doing today?"
"Great!" Evesi exclaimed nervously.
Odette shot a glare at her friend, and then turned her full attention to the beauty that was Aevah, agreeing with a simple nod and continual nervous smile.
With a small giggle, Aevah began to speak, "Great. I'm glad to hear you're both doing well. Now, what may I assist you with?"
"Th-the orbs! Take them!" Odette struggled to get out. Her face felt as though a Firani had been nipping at her under the surface. Her cheeks flushed and embarrassment took over.
Evesi's eyes opened wider as she heard the tone that Odette was using. She kept her gaze on the angelic figure before them; but was silent and shocked.
"Oh, that's fantastic. You've both brought orbs for me? Wonderful! Place them here on the table if you'd be so kind." Aevah stated, a smile on her face.
Both did as they were told.
"Oh, wonderful. Two Ysali and two Kiandri souls, hmm? That's beautiful. Well done, both of you. I'll let your superiors know I've received them and they will alert you as to what's next. Maybe we'll see you at the next ceremony." she stated, picking up the orbs and looking over each one.
Both girls just smiled, said thank you too many times, and left the room. "That...was so embarrassing. I haven't spoken to her in a long while. I wonder if anyone else gets that nervous around her!?" she stated, trying to catch her breath.
Odette rolled her eyes. She always seemed to completely melt when talking to Aevah; and it was uncontrollable. She always wondered what it might be; but never could she tell. The two went back to their dorms for the evening and it was only a matter of time before they were able to go up in rank.
Becoming a True Warrior Days turned into weeks, weeks to months, months to years; and little Odette grew stronger and more powerful every day with her training. Her and Evesi's bond grew ever stronger as well, making quite the formidable team between the two.
Over the years, Odette grew and changed some things about her look. She realized that with how many dragons she takes on at any given time, she needed more armor. Thus, she began to wear thick leather and steel plated armor, especially when going out to hunt. She cut her hair short to keep it more tame for battle.
She had made few friends in her time; as her personality as the unit's "b***h" came to fruition. She was hard, rough, and oftentimes merciless. Training newbies and taking the squads out for hunts was one of her past times.
Though, in the more recent months, she's taken to the forge and enchanting. Her instructor had given her most of the required pieces, and she had free access to use them as she saw fit. It was then that she decided she would undertake the title of "smith" and "enchanter".
So, time spent indoors became a much more reasonable place as she studied the books and trained under her teachers instructions. Evesi would constantly help her study the books for enchanting while she, in return, would help Evesi learn control over her spells. The two sparred constantly, allowing for so much growth in their power and also being able to study the other's fight patterns; which in return allowed their bond to grow and created a powerful duo, when paired together.
Finally, at the age of 18, Odette had become a strong competitor in many aspects. Her life revolved around the warrior lifestyle. Going out, killing dragons and creatures, as well as taking note that she needed to keep her studies up in the ways of the smith and enchanting. The future was so bright for this young Orderite. So very bright indeed.
