W I N T E R . I S . C O M I N G

Winter is Coming
The settlements of Tendaji all knew how to take care of themselves during the winter. Zena and Sauti received their usual snow fall, for Zena it was nearly year round and didn't faze them much at all; Tale and Jauhar seemed to retain most of their heat, dropping to milder temperatures; Matori and Oba seemed to flux between mild during the day and a sharp chill in the evenings. But usually it was all under control.

Word had passed through the elders and oracles and mystics that this winter was going to be a hard winter. The air would be sharp with cold and snow would fall in all areas of the world, something that had never happened before in Jauhar.

It came as a shock when the temperatures began to drop rapidly through the night. Most had thought that it was just a joke. There couldn't possibly be enough cold air to send snow to Jauhar. It was absurd. But it happened, and most of Tendaji wasn't prepared.

In the morning everything was frosted over, those in Zena and most of Sauti were barely able to open their doors the snow had risen so high overnight, and those in warmer climates could see the sheet of frost on the ground and the plants around them.

If the winter was going to be a long one, they would have to salvage what they could and come up with a plan...

Aseara shivered and cuddled closer to the other orphan next to her. Why was she so cold? Slowly she pushed sleep away and awoke, her breath came out in a misty cloud and it finally settled in her mind. Aseara stood up quickly and pulled the covers up to her chin, winter was here. But they were not prepared for this. A quick glance around their tent told her that they`d been able to keep very warm because of the sheer amount of bodies pushed together in the little tent. It was hellish during those summer nights but kept the chill away somewhat now.

Quickly, she dressed using some of the other children’s clothing to pile on the layers. Once she was bundled up she moved towards the tents opening and peeked outside, there was a small opening left that was just big enough for her to crawl through. No wonder Aseara hadn`t woken up from the sun this morning and why everyone was still asleep. Only a bit of the tops of the tents were left unburied by snow but everything else was a beautiful white landscape. There wasn`t really time to be looking and exploring this new landscape, she needed to wake up the guardians otherwise they were going to have a nasty surprise when they did finally wake up.

Aseara moved towards the guardian tent, peaked in and raised her voice. “It snowed and we need to get some warmth going!” The guardians all awoke with a start eyeing her and then eyeing the pile of snow she was currently on. These people were the most irresponsible people that she had ever known, there was no way she was naïve enough like the other children to trust them. “Get the other children up and dressed Aseara.” The girl made a face before leaving them to get dressed and out and about, she on the other hand went back to her tent and got to work.

The cold made none of the children want to get up and even less get to work. The guardians were beginning to tell them to help them uncover the tents so that they could huddle them closer and build one large wintery fortress around them. Aseara was dubious but did as she was told. Some of the children were digging while others piled on snow to form walls, the guardians wanted a fire pit close to the tents and walls around the fire so it wouldn’t be extinguished. The guardians had to split up as one went to the nearest town to gather supplied while the rest stayed behind.

If only her parents had not left Aseara… She’d be in her home all warm and probably still sleeping instead of here shoveling snow. Thankfully, they had finally made it back to Sauti her real home. Which meant that at some point she would make it back to her village and be able to never see the guardians ever again. She just needed to last through this winter and all would be fine. At this point, she’d grown up and didn’t need anyone. Or at least that’s what she thought. That was one thing that Aseara could not fault the guardians for, they had taught the children to think on their feet and take care of themselves.

“Aseara can you go out and scavenge some things? And don’t go too far.”
The guardians were all very well aware of her habit of sneaking out and returning. They had stopped trying to stop her a long time ago especially when she returned with some food to help lighten the load of the supplies. Aseara nodded with a smile and was off. They would need some wood and food, though food probably wouldn’t be doable from her at this point since it was all buried. Still, she tore down some of the small branches and gathered a neat little pile.

She had time to do quite a few trips before the light began to dim and Aseara returned to camp with her last collection of branches. The guardian who had left had come back with food supplies and a fire had been started. Everyone was huddled close to it as the bread, cheese, and jerky were passed around. Aseara took her seat and her portion and sat next to the fire to warm her hands. People seemed to be in a better mood and they were probably going to be here for a few days before they moved on again. Then she would be home. Soon.

Tis the Season
The air was ripe with cheer in all of Tendaji. The Oban's King had been defeated and a new and compassionate one put in his place, the slaves were released, and it was time for the Winter Solstice. Friendly faces abounded as the havoc of the war was nearly wiped away and the villages restored.

It would seem as if everyone was enjoying the season, and it was very clear to see why. Almost every land in Tendaji were hosting their own winter celebrations, partying and feasting until the early hours of the morning before settling in to sleep for the night. It wasn't a time for work anymore, but a momentary reprieve for play.

Aseara’s eyes swept over her village, how long had she been gone for now? They’d just arrived that morning and people were just awakening to see what all the noise was about. Families had come out and once they’d spotted their child had come running to pick them up. They were the last of the orphans to be brought back home and it was creating quite the commotion. Many of the guardians had returned to their homes and the last one, her neighbor ushered Aseara back towards their own homes. There was only her left, but as they reached her old home there was no one to great her.

The home was an empty husk void of all life. Aseara stared at the old home, some of her neighbors had kept it as best they could but the place was still in ruins.

“Come, let me get you inside and warmed up with proper food in your belly.” Miska continued to urge Aseara back on and into her old home. As her guardian began a small fire to warm up the place, Aseara looked around and shifted uncomfortably until the heat raised and she was able to shed a few layers. Miska shuffled around and find some preserved food. Since her family moved a lot they suualyl always kept a lot of easily preserved foods around. It was nice; it would be a taste of her old life from before. Aseara grabbed the extended jar and took a seat.

“I don’t know if your parents will be back Aseara, I don’t mind watching over you if you’d like to stay here. I however, will not parent you and you will need to take care of yourself for the most part. You’re reaching an age soon that you’d be old enough to care for yourself anyway,” she shrugged. “Either way, you will need to make up your mind. I am sure your parents left behind enough for you to get by and then you can take up odd jobs if you ever need anything. I will only be here in case of emergencies.”

From what Aseara understood, Miska would only be there for her in dire situations. It made her only hate the guardian even more. Except that they’d taught her to take care of herself, she could scavenge for food and things to sell, and like Miska said work small jobs. If her parents came back then they would, if they didn’t then well. She was all she had and she could care for her own self. She didn’t need anyone, not anymore.

“That’s fine. I can take care of myself.”

“Good.”

Miska rose and left Aseara. She quietly ate the food she’d been given, the food tasted like the best thing she’d eaten in who knows how long. There was a knock and Aseara went to open the door to find one of the other orphans from her village.

“Shouldn’t you be with family?” Aseara frowned at him.

“Yes but we’re going to be celebrating winter and I thought…” he looked at the empty space of her home. “I thought I’d invite you to come with my family.”

“I have things I need to do.” She didn’t like his pity party for her.

“Aseara, half the time if you didn’t go out and get food half of us would be starving. This is me thanking you. Just come over okay?”

“Fine.”

Aseara closed the door behind her and followed after the young boy as he ran through the village. They made it to his home which was lit up from the inside and happy voices drifted from the home. The boy ran in and left her there at the door to peer in at all the people, none of which looked to her. Maybe she should just leave while no one was looking…. They wouldn’t notice she was missing anyways and she wasn’t part of this family. Aseara took a step back and then another before turning around to walk down the stairs.

“Aseara are you leaving so early? The feast just began.”

Asseara paused and slowly turned back. A woman stood there with a plate loaded with food, she hadn’t seen this much food in a very long time. Her mouth watered.

“I….”

“Are you hungry? Why don’t you come in and have this plate?”

Torn, Aseara finally turned around and grabbed the plate. The woman closed the door behind her when she was fully inside. She took a seat and began to eat, listening to the chatter of the others. The boy and his mother checked up on her once in a while but she was there the whole night and into the wee hours of the morning where she finally fell asleep.

The day had been good to her; Aseara counted and checked the items left in her basket. She’d have plenty of food and coin to last her for a few days after she’d paid Miska her due. She really did hate that part of her earnings went to Miska because the woman gave her dancing lessons and that’s how she earned her keep. Speaking of which, the old hag was leaning near her home probably waiting for her to return home greedily. Aseara hated her; she wanted to leave this place. A few more coins and she’d be able to finally get away…

“What have you got for me today Aseara?” Miska moved forward her steps telling her that the woman was drunk. She approached her, glaring down at her before handing her a few food items. There was no way she was giving up some of her hard earned coin to this woman so she could spend it on booze. Miska looked at the items and threw them right back at her.

“Ungrateful child! I want the coin!”

“Barter for your booze old woman. You haven’t given me a proper dancing lesson in months. I am no longer going to be supplying you. This is my coin.”

Miska began to throw a fit but Aseara left her and entered her new tent and settled in her living quarters. She’s sold her parents home almost a year ago for extra money so she could take care of herself and get something that was a little smaller. Now the two room tent was what she called home sweet home. She heard Miska yelling some before a few of the villagers told her to settled down and go back into her own home. Many were tired of the drunk Miska had become and many of those folks had even told her to stop giving the old woman money.

It was hard though since Miska had taken care of her for many years until Aseara had been old enough to do things on her own. She’d learned much from her, but she felt now was the time to sever all ties with her. Perhaps even move on and leave the tribe to find her own way. Aseara made herself dinner and then settled into bed with a book. Perhaps tomorrow would bring more coin or maybe even a surprise. Who knew what the future held for her.

-----------------------------

When the sun hit her tent, Aseara stirred and got out of bed to get her breakfast and meals for the day ready. Her routine was simple these mornings, she got ready and then went to run a few errands like food or items she needed before she went back home and went to what she called work. Today was one of those days where a lot of travels passed through town for one reason or another, which meant she was going to be out dancing for coin and perhaps have enough to get away from this place. One could only hope.

Setting her basket down, Aseara laid down her blanket on the ground and settled down in her usual spot. She’d chosen a space between a jeweler who had beautiful works and a tailor who sold a few odds and ends. Both had helped her out with clothing as well as jewelry and she brought in business for them by gathering a crowd when she danced. It was a win win for everyone and she was able to not have to spend her earnings on new things when she required them. It was also another way for Aseara to distance herself from Miska.

As the travels began to tickle into the village it was hard to miss the one large group of Obans. Some of the towns folk had noticed them and sent kids telling everyone though the tribe that they were arriving. It wasn’t until much later during the day that they began to pass in front of Aseara who danced to the tune of the musician across the street. She caught a few of the male gazes and drew them in with her hips. The group stopped to admire her grew much larger until finally a woman showed up that Aseara vaguely remembered.

She continued to dance anyway and when the song came to end she bow in front of everyone and watched as the coins were thrown into her basket. The Oban woman approached her smiling.

“I never forget a pretty face and yours is not one I could forget little girl.”

Aseara collected her coins and counted them.

“Have we met before?”

“We certainly have child,” the old woman observed her with a curious look. “I wished I could have employed you then but it looks like my fortunes have turned on me. May we talk in private?”

“I still have the day ahead of me.”

“I will pay you handsomely for your time…?”

“Aseara.” The wind girl gathered her things and made her way to the one of the stalls with food and drink. There was no way she was taking this woman with her to her home.

“I am Afsana. I am the owner of one of the most renowned exclusive clubs in Oban called the Red Amaryllis. Usually I do not leave, but my patrons who do not travel much wanted to see some fresh new faces. When I saw you Aseara those years ago, I knew you would catch the eye of my patrons.” The woman bought drinks and tipped the man more than she ought to have and handed Aseara a cup.

“With a bit of proper instructions I could turn you into quite a beautiful flower of your own. You would be paid handsomely and you’d be able to even own your own apartment. I would take care of you as long as you worked for me.”

“I’d have to move to Oba…”

“Well yes, my patrons don’t leave the city for a reason.”

“I don’t know…” Maybe she’d be able to find out more information about her parents, especially if she was catering to nobility. Perhaps it would be easy to wrangle one to find out more for her. “I won’t be a prisoner, I will still be able to go where I wish to?”

“As long as you tell me first. I wouldn’t want you to get kidnapped or hurt. Plus you will sign a contract and that contract will bind you to me.” Aseara was thoughtful for a few moments until the woman extended out a pouch with coins inside. She took it and was surprised at the weight of it, she’d never seen so much…

“This is what you could make in a single evening if not more if you play your cards right. Some patrons will want to help you and give you more; some will shower you with gifts. There’s really no telling how much of a big hit you will be.”

“Okay, I’ll do it.” The woman smiled.

“Good, we leave to dawn don’t be late.” With that the woman turned away and left her wondering what she’d gotten herself into.

J O U R N E Y

As Aseara had walked home that evening she’d made a stop to a shop owner and sold her belongings to him. Everything she had that she wouldn’t be taking with her on her journey to Oba. Seeing that pouch of gold… It hadn’t taken her long to make her decision. She couldn’t imagine how much information she’d be able to get with that much and she could even send some back here to help some of the orphans from war and just overall help her people… Yes. It was a difficult decision and it was a lot to sacrifice, but Aseara had nothing to keep her here.

As the sun slowly began to rise that morning, Aseara had already packed all of her belongs into one single large backpack and pouch. Most of the content was what she’d been able to save up but some of it also was belongings she’d kept for her parents. There wasn’t much but there was no way she was going to get rid of these things. Aseara took one last glance around the small hut she’d come to call home and shook her head. No regret. This was for the best for everyone and she was not going to back down from it now.

Miska was out drunkenly stumbling around when Aseara exited her tent. The older wind woman turned on her and threw the bottle which she avoided.

“Whore. You are a disgusting! Selling yourself to those Oban!” Miska stumbled forward and Aseara stepped back her expression angry.

“Your parents died because of those people and you’re selling yourself to them! You ungrateful child,” she was yelling at this point. “Do you really think you’re going to work? They’re going to use you and then throw you out like trash.”

“And you think you’re so much better right? You took in orphans and we travelled around starving and freezing. Then we come back here and you drop me off and tell me to survive on my own. Well guess what, at least me getting work is more than you’ll ever be able to do!” Now she was yelling but she quieted her tone. Miska stumbled forward again and Aseara pushed her back which caused Miska to fall to the ground. Aseara went to help her up feeling guilty but Miska pushed her away. There was simply no helping it now.

“I don’t need your filthy hand on me. Get out of here, no one wants you!”

Aseara huffed and turned her back to her and walked away. She would show her, show the whole village she wasn’t making a mistake. They were not going to throw her out, she was going to make sure that they needed her, that their life depended on her. Prove them all wrong she would.

Afsana was patiently waiting for Aseara when she finally arrived, a large smile on her face.

“Glad you could join us. Please climb in.”

Aseara went in and came face to face with other girls of different tribes.

“Everyone this is Aseara, you may introduce yourselves later on. Now then, since everyone is here I will be going over how this works,” she turned briefly to Aseara. “I don’t like repeating myself you see.” She turned back to the girls.

“First of all, you girls will be the youngest entertainers at the Red Amaryllis which means you will be doing a lot of chores and attending to the older entertainers. Each morning you will pick up your schedule for the day. I plan on educating you young ladies very well; you will not find this kind of education anywhere else. I do not appreciate any slackers, this is a one in a lifetime opportunity and I will not see anyone squander it away!”

“I will make sure you are able to entertain, as well as read, write, and keep up a proper conversation. You will also have your specialization training which I will further train as well and when you have caught up with the other performers then you will attend training with them. You are hostess and you will act with dignity.”

“You will all be entertaining high-class citizens of the capital. These are powerful businessmen and nobles. Our members pay a lot of money to see such performances and as such you’re paid quite well. I do take a cut of the profits since I train you, feed, you, give you a place to see. I want my establishment to be the most renowned one in all of Oba. We will also provide entertainment for nobles at their parties and I’ve bene thinking about expanding to public performances. In any case there will be plenty to keep you busy.”

“There is one thing that I ask,” Afsana grew serious. “You will be in the capitol of Oba and many of the nobles who do not go outside Oba have very rarely seen those of other tribes. Many will be infatuated with you and my try to court you. I want you to remember however that they may not marry you. They may tell you they will and shower you in gifts but nobles have responsibilities. As such, any girl found pregnant within my establishment will find herself without a job. I condone these kinds of actions because I know what will happen. So let this be a warning to all you girls.”

Some of the girls looked at each other, but Aseara glanced out of the window. She had no plans on ever getting that close to any fire Earthling. Ever. She wanted information and she would get it but she would never use those kinds of tactics. Those who tried would find their efforts to be in vain. She was sure some of the other girls would fall for a noble, they had money and whispered promises of a better life why wouldn’t they? But Aseara had another purpose for coming to Oba, her judgment would not be clouded but some sweet nothings and money when she had her own.

“Obviously one of you is worse than the other at this and I’m looking at you Chelissi.” Afsana gave the Ice girl a stern look before clapping her hands.

“Try it again both of you. Legs under your hip bone now bend your knees Chelissi. Bend your knees, you’re not bending enough!”

“But I am! I’m trying!”

“Look at how Aseara stands; she’s a natural at this.” The girl gave Aseara a cold stare but she did was she was told. She thought the others girl’s problem was that she was too stuff; she needed to flow and relax a lot more. Chelissi fixed her posture.

“Lower abs tucked!” Afsana yelled at the other girl. “Alright now, raise your chest, arms out. Now go.”

Aseara did as she’d been taught; she straightened out one leg to raise one hip and then lowered it to raise the other. The belt with the tiny metal pieces clanked softly as she moved with ease and the sound was clear. Chelissi however was still having trouble, the sound her belt was making was not smooth the other girl did not poses the same skills as she did. She could see Afsana’s expression growing darker and darker as the other girl struggled. Aseara kept on going her slow rhythm but she knew she could go much faster if asked. This was easy stuff.

“Alright stop, stop. Chelissi you take a break. Aseara come closer I’m going to show you some other moves.”

“But!” The girl whinned.

“Get out of my sight!” Aseara approached her.

“You’re a natural at this. I didn’t think you were this good, I think I’m going to have to fast track your training and you might just be ready by the time we get to the capitol. From now on I’m going to be giving you your own lessons.”

“Okay.” Aseara couldn’t really complain. Sure Afsana could sometimes be loud and a little pushy but her skills here had improved tenfold since she’d started learning from her. They kept her feed and clothed, warm and dry. No, Afsana she could learn to deal with. She only wanted the girls to perform their best and that’s what Aseara was going to do.

The rest of the day as spent learning to move beautifully with her body. She picked up on the easy things fast, but it was the more intricate moves that seemed to cause her to trip up. Afsana however never seemed to lose her patience with Aseara. By the end of the day Aseara was tired and aching and was given three days’ rest. The other girls congratulated her though she didn’t see Chelissi. She knew that the girl would probably be angry with her since she had been with the group longer than Aseara had. Well, she didn’t think this would be a road without making a few enemies anyway.

As Afsana had said, Aseara now took lessons by herself as she learned the new moves. The only time that she wasn’t bettering her skills was when she was learning to read and write properly though it was etiquette that she had trouble with. Afsana had a love for etiquette and how to act proper and she made sure that they knew it down pat. They were going to be in a foreign place entertaining noble guests and they could be out back from where they came from with a single word from a patron. If they acted proper, they would keep their job.

Half way through the journey Afsana began to teach her how to use objects in her dancing. Sometimes it was fans, sometimes a piece of clothing. Whenever Aseara was close to perfecting whatever it was that she was asking she would change it up. Aseara felt her skills wouldn’t improve unless she perfected the moves but Afsana told her there would be plenty of time to practice once they were in Oba. There was also talk of finally teaching her some dances with music but Afsana quelled those rumors. Aseara would do her own dancing to her own music and would receive whatever she needed once in Oba.

“My feet are killing me.” Aseara sat down heavily near the fire and rubbed her feet.

“Afsana is really drilling you.” Said Iskilsa, she was a singer with one of the most amazing voices Aseara had ever heard.

“Yes she is.”

“Can’t blame her really, Chelissi might get sent home. She’s a much slower learner than you. Afsana wants us to be performance ready by the time we get to a capitol.”

“It’s only to be expected,” said another of the girls that joined them. She played music for Iskilsa. “Can’t you tell we’re being divided? The better girls will get the best work while the others…” She shrugged. “Who knows?”

“We’re going to be returned home,” Tryane said as she sat with the group. She was the other singer. “If we haven’t improved to her standards by the time we make it to the capitol she’s going to get a convoy to bring us back so she can find someone to replace us. I heard them talking about it. Aseara… Iskilsa… Even you Ysane, you’re going to be staying in the capitol and rolling in riches while we go back home.”

“Oh come on Tryane. You cried the whole first week you left your village.”

“We all did Ysane.”

“I didn’t.” Aseara pipped up and everyone turned to her.

“That’s true, how come?” Aseara shrugged.

“I don’t have family back home, dancing is all I have.” The others looked at each other in silence.

“You’re not even one bit sad?”

“Not at all. I know I am good at dancing. Afsana has improved my skills greatly and I’ll be improving even more once we get to the capitol. I’ll be dancing for nobles and making a good salary. What’s to complain about that? I don’t have family like you guys.”

Everyone feel into an awkward silence. Aseara was not one bit scared at this point because what she didn’t tell them was that she was going to use the influence she gathered to find her parents. That meant her dancing needed to be perfect, so she would work for it.

Spring Showers
After the frigid chill of the harsh winter had left Tendaji, it seemed that most were happy to just return to their normal routines, though the normal routine didn’t seem to be what the weather had in mind. It wasn’t long before almost everywhere noticed the way that the winter air had seemed to push precipitation onto the land in its place. Rain flowed seemingly non-stop, reaching all the areas of Tendaji, even frozen Zena saw its share of rain, though the temperatures were still much too cold to support such a thing and rain turned to hail, which froze over the ground.

The critters of Tendaji only wanted to seek shelter from their flooded homes and the wet downpour that surrounded them. They found their way into homes, huts, sheds, anywhere that could stay dry - and preferrably warm.

4: Zore
1: 5

The little party had arrived in the rain at the Red Amaryllis and it had continued to rain for several days. Not that it really mattered since most of her classes were inside. Indeed as soon as they`d arrived in the district they`d been separated. Those who had been chosen to stay because of their skills were sent to their quarters while the rest, those who had not improved enough were sent back home with a bit of coin in hand. A few had been dropped off, those who had quit, but there were still a few who had lingered behind.

For her part, Aseara had been looking forward to the warm weather of Oba and had been thoroughly disappointed by the rain. Afsana said it was a good thing since she would surely burn under the harsh glare of the sun because of how pale she was. Afsana planned on keeping her as pale as she could which meant lots of shade and clothing layers to cover up her delicate skin. Inside she was fine, but if she ventured out she`d have to cover up. Thankfully this rain allowed her to explore a bit of the city when she had some time off.

Mornings were early with classes. Aseara was up early and getting ready for her reading and writing class of the morning before breakfast. Then it was various other classes before lunch. Her afternoon was filled with dancing classes before dinner and then a single short class after dinner so she could relax for the rest of the evening. Aseara had never been this busy in her life but she was finding herself liking more and more this lifestyles and thoughts of home were very few. This was even before they began a short apprenticeship with others of their profession and attended parties and did performances.

So that night when she entered her room and yawned she threw herself onto her bed and didn’t give a second thought. It was one of her two off days tomorrow and all she wanted to do was sleep. Oh course she didn`t expect to find other beings in bed with her. She sat up so quickly when she heard a muffled noise that she fell right off the bed. There was a rustle of feathers but Aseara heard no more. Slowly she looked up and found four birds she had never seen in her bed and all of them were soaking wet.

Aseara turned and looked at the window that she had left slightly open. It had been humid and she had thought it would help if there would be a bit of wind coming in. The birds seemed to have pushed t open and now they had taken over her room! The Wind girl paced a bit, wondering what she could possibly do. She could not ask for help or she would be scolded and she did not exactly want to approach the birds either. She had no experience with animals and well these did not exactly look like your ever day birds either. They were so large!

The Wind Earthling paced her room; the birds seemed to be content with ignoring her and simply sleeping and keeping warm in a large bundle together. Aseara slipped out of the room and went to find a closet with cleaning supplies; she grabbed a broom and walked back to her room. She tried to prod the birds off her bed, tried to push them, poke them, and even wacked on but still they would not move. Then she got an idea, it was probably not the best idea but it was going to have to work since she was out of options.

Leaving the birds behind, Aseara went to another cupboard and grabbed some blankets. Lots of them and took them back to her room. Once there she pushed aside her desk that was by her window and began to undo all the blankets to make some sort of nest. With the nest done, she still had to get them to move there. Smiling, she left to the kitchens and grabbed some bread. Back in her room she threw pieces at the birds until they woke up ad really began to pay attention to her. Aseara began to make a break trail to the nest where she had left some bread pieces. They began to follow it and moved to the nest, all five settled in the new nest she had made for them.

Aseara sighed at her bed and began to remove the covers to get them washed. Hopefully if she kept them fed in that corner she wouldn’t have any more problems.
