Solo - 10/31/2013 - Responsible citizenship
Something Keren Della-Blue learned the hard way: there were only so many times you could talk about being abducted by aliens before your parents shipped you off to live on a kibbutz with your second cousins. No internet, no video games, no cell phone. If you wanted something, you had to requisition it from the commissary and that could take days. Instead of her precious science lab at Horizon Institute, Keren had to make due with a community high school chemistry lab, air raid drills, and cows.
Lots and lots of cows.
Her first day there, she asked her cousin Gad what there was to do for fun. He shrugged at her and said, “Well, there’s cows.”
Anyway, she was back now, strong and tan and a year and a half older, ready to get back to school and talk about anything but being abducted by aliens. It had seemed so real at the time, but now Keren wasn’t even sure it had really happened. She’d been to Megiddo – like, the actual, geographic location – and there wasn’t anything there that particularly resonated with her. Maybe she was just mistaken, and everything was the result of stress and being overtired. Keren still couldn’t explain why she’d disappeared for a month, but then – It was easy to pretend that nothing had ever happened when you were thousands of miles away.
She thought about calling up some of her old friends when she touched back down in Destiny City, but then she thought, “What’s the rush?” She hadn’t been particularly easy to contact while she was in Israel, but it wasn’t impossible and still, no one had even tried! And then she was home for a week and it still didn’t seem important to call anyone and let them know she was back. So many of them seemed like they were involved in all the weirdness involving aliens, and Keren was simply not about that kind of life any longer.
“You seem calmer,” commented her mother, putting a bowl of soup down in front of Keren. It was Halloween, but Keren was being a good citizen and staying home. Destiny City was as weird as ever, but she was ready to keep her head down and fall in line.
“More mature?” asked Keren, practically begging for validation.
“Maybe,” said her mother. “Do you want a roll?”
“Yes, please,” said Keren.
After dinner, she stared at the sheer number of pages of Homestuck she had missed and said, “******** it.” She signed onto AIM as invisible, stared at the names that looked utterly unfamiliar, and said, “******** that.”
She scrolled through the year and a half old text messages on her phone, fervent confessions of adoration interspersed with internet drama. “******** everything,” said Keren, dropping her phone into the drawer on her bedside table.
She opened a bag of Halloween candy and turned on the TV, flipped the channels until she found a black and white horror movie about zombies.
She felt a little like a zombie herself.

Solo - 12/9/2013 - I've just met the most wonderful girl
Keren climbed in through her window, like she did every night, shedding her knightly frills and lace for boxers and an old Crystal Academy gym shirt. She went immediately to the en suite and pulled her shirt over her head, so that she could study the bruises blooming across her bare torso. She felt proud of these developing swirls of red and purple; she’d earned them, and the woman who’d inflicted them was nothing short of perfection. A little thrill ran up her spine when she considered the prospect of sparring with Eternal Sailor Gunn again: she’d do better next time. She had to. She was just starting out with nowhere to go but up.
For the first time that she was really, absolutely sure of, Keren thought that she was grateful to be a page.
She pulled her shirt back on and brushed her teeth, and couldn’t help but grin at her reflection from giddiness. She had a mentor! A mentor! Who was smart and strong and gorgeous and perfect and—
Keren spat into the sink. She had a crush, she realized. A crush! Who was smart and strong and gorgeous and perfect and wanted to spar with her again on Saturday and was never, ever going to notice her, probably, because Keren was a month shy of eighteen with pimples flaring at her hairline, and why would someone so gloriously, effortlessly cool as Gunn ever deign to notice someone as lowly as her for activities of a sexual and romantic nature?
Well, one could dream.
She bet that Gunn had soft lips.
Keren washed her face, paying extra attention to the problem spot at her hairline and rubbing benzoil peroxide in until it stung. It was only a few minutes past midnight when she tumbled into bed – early, for a patrol night, but she was exhausted. Fighting with Gunn was no different from fighting with a Negaverse Lieutenant in terms of damage inflicted – maybe more painful, not that Megiddo minded. These were sure to be the worst bruises she’d picked up since awakening, but she planned to wear them proudly, like marks from an intense but hard-won basketball game back when she’d still played.
Her fingers tingled – maybe from the acne medication. Keren reached up and twirled a lock of hair between her fingers, weaving a small braid and imagining what Gunn’s hair might feel like. She bet it was soft and thick and long and would form gorgeous braids. Maybe Gunn would consent to having her hair braided one day when they were better friends, Megiddo thought. Maybe she could content herself with that, even if they’d never kiss or anything that couples did. She bet she’d be content with Gunn just telling her she’d done well once. Faint praise wouldn’t be damning at all if it came from the senshi’s mouth.
Keren stared up at the ceiling. “She’s just so amazing,” she sighed, balling her hands up in the hem of her shirt. Did she dare imagine – was that getting ahead of herself?
There was no harm in playing pretend, she decided.
