Apparently, while she was off milking cows on the other side of the world, the circus had come to town and stayed. And stayed. And stayed. Keren wouldn't be caught dead here on a school night, but if she claimed that she was out practicing her superhero-ing, she could probably excuse it. Besides, her Megiddo outfit was totally chic! She'd already gotten, like, four compliments on it.
(It hadn't yet clicked to her that walking around in her Saturn Page regalia totally attracted trouble.)
Coming out of the strongman show, Megiddo split off from the crowd and ducked into a narrow space between two tents. It had been so crowded in there - she needed a second or two to breathe and get her bearings. Maybe this would be a shortcut, she decided, pushing ahead.
The alley spat her out at the far end of the midway, between a food tent and a booth with typical carnival games. Megiddo adjusted her hold on her pitcher, wishing for a belt or anything she could slip it to, and set off to explore what sorts of wonders awaited her.

Before the young girl could get very far, a long brown hand snacked out and grabbed her arm, hauling on her to get her back into the isle between the tents.
"What the bloody hell do you think you're doing?" Hissed a masculine voice with a strong British accent. The young man attached to the hand appeared to be in his 20s and he was tall... well over six feet and all lean muscle under his diamond printed leotard. Paint decorated his long face, marking him out as someone who obviously worked here. You didn't go around looking like a clown unless you were one.
Orange eyes glared at the shorter girl, though the hand on her arm loosened its grip to something more gentle. Impatient, the performer shifted and waited for her response, glancing about at the passerby to make sure no one was paying attention to them. Had he been anything else, Elijah would never have remarked on this girl's outfit as anything but normal, but there were parts of her, not the least of which the pitcher she clung to, that marked her as something else... something he couldn't just ignore. Not in his circus.

Megiddo whirled around, letting out a little yelp of protest as she spun. The man who'd grabbed her was a good half a foot taller than her, which was in and of itself unusual because Keren was used to being the tallest person present in most situations. To say he was striking was an understatement - between the blue hair, dark skin, orange eyes, and some wicked face paint, Keren would have swooned if she swung that way. Which she did not. So she just sort of tried to put on her most innocent face and said, "Taking a shortcut." This, as soon as she said it, was probably not the best answer. The harlequin (an SAT word, if there ever was one) definitely worked here, given that this was a circus, and she'd just been... well, trespassing, for lack of a better word. "Was that alleyway employees only?" she asked nervously. There was no reason for him to think she was anything other than a teenaged girl with a penchant for Japanese street fashion and odd accessories, right? "I'm sorry. I didn't know." She looked pointedly down at the hand on her arm. "I paid my admission! My ticket stub's in my pocket. I'll stick to the main paths from now on! I just - it looked like a way to skip the crowd. I'm sorry. Honestly."

Elijah shook his head impatiently, feeling hanging braids brush his cheeks.
"That's not what I meant, girl. Why are you bloody powered up, just walking around like nothings going on?" He said as he let go of her arm, nervously rubbing his hands on lean hips. The clown glanced around again, frowning. "Look, I know you're a Saturn Knight, so drop the act. What I don't know is why you're here and what you think you're doing. This circus has got its own protectors, you get me?"
Not that they wouldn't welcome more help... with just him and Chester, patrolling the whole place was a big task every night, and you could be sure that his boss would never let a night pass without making sure the vermin was cleared out of the Carnival. Still... he felt territorial about the place. The least she could do was let them know she was here poking around... but what he couldn't understand was why she was doing it right out in the open like this, among the crowds of normal people. What if some of them were part of the negaverse and did something when she wasn't looking? He felt like it was something of his duty to investigate this stranger on his turf.

Megiddo frowned and rubbed the place where he'd been holding her arm. There was a lot of stuff about this knight stuff she didn't understand, starting with the etiquette. "I figured I wouldn't look horribly out of place here," she said lowly, seeing that the jig was up. It was true that no one had given her a second look tonight. "I'm just checking the place out." Which was a shitty excuse. She tried again: "I'm out past curfew, okay? If anyone saw civilian me walking around I'd get in a ton of trouble with pretty much everyone ever, forever." It wasn't true, but she didn't expect the man to catch her in the lie. "Anyway," she added, narrowing her eyes at him, "What do you mean, protectors? And how do you know what a Saturn knight is?" It wasn't like she expected them to be common! As far as her experience went, she'd never met another one! Not that she was in any position to be asking questions right now or anything, of course.

Elijah sighed as he lifted a hand to rub his temples.
"You don't see anything wrong with just... wandering around like that? Nothing at all?" He laughed, shaking his head. Dropping his hand, holding it palm up, he closed his eyes and concentrated for a moment. As he focused, a mask on a slender stick appeared in his hand, decked with ribbons and a sirene expression. When it materialized, he changed and gone was the face paint, the leotard, and in its place was a sleek vest and soft white shirt, ruffles at neck and wrists. Tall boots with curling toes were on his feet and everywhere, bells decorated him. Every twitch he made brought out the tinkle of little silver bells and the young page opened his eyes to regard the other page. Now that he was powered up, he could feel her and it was obvious that they were more or less the same level.
"Don't you know you put out a signature like this? There are people out there looking for people like us, and not in a good way. We attract a lot of attention like this." He gestured with his mask, waving it at her. "You're just asking for trouble. And in case the outfit wasn't enough, I know what a Saturn Knight is because I'm one too. The owner is a Pluto Knight, and we keep this place free of monsters."
Was she really that childish...? Running around powered up because she didn't want someone to notice how young she was and send her home to her mommy? It just underscored how young she really was. How irresponsible.

Well, now that he mentioned it, Megiddo sure felt it. "It's not like someone gave me a manual," she sighed indignantly, and knew she was only digging herself deeper here. Just her luck that the staff member who accosted her would also be a knight - and one of her same order, to boot. She supposed that it was better than being recognized by a negaverser, though only marginally. She crossed her arms over her chest. "Seems like everyone else's got a way better handle on all this stuff than I do," she frowned. "Did I miss, like, an orientation meeting?" Because the other option was that Megiddo was just bad at this, and she wasn't going to stand for that, or admit it. "You want me to leave?" she asked, stung. "I'll leave." It wasn't like she could go back to having a good time now - even if she powered down, the indignity of all this was going to ruin her night. Maybe even her week. Getting called-out hurt, as tough as she tried to present herself.

Ys waved a long fingered hand, brushing away her protests.
"No one gets a manual or an orientation meeting. Some stuff is just common sense. I might have had Luxor, but its not like he's even the world's second worst teacher. Its like getting facts out of a clam..." Propping a hand on his hip, the page eyed his fellow, his head tilted a little. "Look... I'm not here to, like, harp on you or something. I'm not security, I'm a performer."
Tinkling, he waved his arm with a flourish, striking a pose as he said 'performer'.
"You don't have to leave, I'd just appreciate it if you'd power down, or find somewhere without so many people in case you attract youma or something... they always seem to pop out of the wood work around here when I'm in suit." He glanced about almost nervously at that and reached for her hand.
"Here, come on. Since you're here and we're both powered up now, you might as well help me out." Ys said as he pulled her along after him, back down the alley way and between the various buildings and tents. It was all service ways, places not meant for the public... and while the carnival was bustling just on the other side of canvas and wood, the paths he took were more or less deserted. Which was just as he intended.
As the page led the other, he stretched out his senses and kept a sharp eye on the territory he knew so well. She'd been here for a while... there had to be a few vermin that needed exterminating hiding out somewhere. The carnival was like a big, juice fruit to them... they could never resist it.

It sort of sucked about the no manual thing, but at least she hadn't somehow managed to miss a lesson. Knowing she was starting from the same place as everyone else was comforting, and it wasn't exactly like she needed to tell him she'd been slacking off for a year and a half on the other side of the world. Megiddo was still a bit confused, though. Of course she'd expected him to harp on her, and he sort of had! And he'd all but told her to power down right before inviting her out on patrol! Still, it was such an opportunity - think work study - that she decided she could ignore the mixed messages and let him take her by the hand. "Alright," she said, following him. Although she'd deny it later, the page couldn't help but gawk and gape as they walked through the behind-the-scenes area of the carnival. Despite that she had just been sneaking around, this was nowhere like she had dared imaging seeing before. "Wow," breathed, and tried to reach out with the power senses she hadn't even realized came with this getup. She couldn't really make sense of anything just yet. "What exactly are we looking for?" she asked, noticing that the older page was looking around intensely. "And - what should I call you? I'm Megiddo." It was just sort of weird to walk around thinking of him as that guy.

Mixed messages, that was Ys all wrapped up. He had just wanted to impress on her the importance of what was happening here, but at the same time... he'd found that he didn't want to hurt her feelings about it. If she was new like him, then it wasn't really her fault she didn't know. But, at the same time, she needed to learn.
"Uh.. well, one of those monster Youma things. I'm sure that having you running around like that has gotten at least one of them to crawl out of whatever hole its been hiding in. They love this place... so many places to hide, so many people to feed on." Glancing back, he blinked in surprise when he realized he really hadn't exchanged names with her. A broad smile broke out on his lean face as he swept her an elegant bow.
"Megiddo. I am Ys, Page of Saturn. It is a pleasure to meet you, my lady." He said as he lifted her hand to give her knuckles a playful kiss. "Alright! Now. Want to help me clean out some vermin, since we're both dressed for a party? I suspect there is one hiding out over there, by that closed booth. It got smashed up in another youma fight, so we haven't been using it, giving it a perfect hiding spot."

"Makes sense," nodded Megiddo seriously. Youma she knew well enough, having dusted one just a few nights previously. The bear demon she and Tortali took down had just about exhausted their strength - hopefully anything lurking around the carnival wouldn't measure up. She could see why a place like the carnival would be attractive to the creatures - with so many distracted people packed into such a tight area, it was practically a buffet line! She smiled primly at Ys as he kissed her hand, responding to his bow with a curtsey of her own. For someone who had seemed so serious when she first met him, this other page was shaping up to have quite the sense of humor! Perhaps they could be friends after all - and perhaps she'd been overlooking the potential for heraldry and role play that accompanied her fancy costume. It was like high-stakes LARP! "As they say," she said, holding up her pitcher with a flourish, "You have my axe." She hoped he would get the joke. Looking towards the abandoned booth, Megiddo nodded once more. "Sounds like fun to me," she said, although she was still getting used to the idea of with great power coming great responsibility being fun. Hitting things was fun, in her humble opinion. "So what do we do?" she asked. "Go over there and kick the canvas until it gets mad and attacks us?" Because, like, hey, it worked with cats.

Feeling the excitement building inside of him, Ys focused in on the trashed stall. Orange eyes narrowed as he studied it, wondering what corner the monster was hiding in, if it was even there... At least it shouldn't be hard to get it out of there. Her comment about the axe sort of went over his head, but he took it at its surface meaning of being willing to lend a hand.
"I think I can probably scare it out. After all, I'm not really Mr. Stealth." He said with a grin, the shifting of his body sending up a jingle of the silver bells studding his uniform. "I can actually be pretty intimidating when I'm running. I make quite a racket."
He wouldn't have normally called something like this fun... Ys only went out hunting to clean out the vermin and keep his home safe, but the idea of doing it with a cute girl was a lot more enticing than doing it alone. Maybe she'd want to do this again sometime... it would certainly make the whole thing a lot more enjoyable.
"Okay, just follow along behind me, but not too close in case it takes me down or something... Just keep your eyes on it. If I'm right, this sucker has been trolling this place for a while and it keeps slipping away from me." Giving her a moment to gather herself, the tall man suddenly darted out from cover and ran at the stall, his bells sending up a clamor of noise as he moved. He rang from his hair to his shoes and every in between, which in this case was probably something of a benefit... When he was within a few few of the stall, a hunched lump of greasy fur sprang out of the shadows with a hissing screech.
Ys dug his heels in and back pedaled a little as a twisted looking, dog-sized rat youma landed on the ground in front of them, it's yellowed teeth bared in a grimace of hate.
"Yech... that thing is hideous." He gasped out as he kicked at it, the monster jumping back out of his reach with another snarl.

Not a Lord of the Rings fan, then, thought Megiddo, when Ys made no indication that he'd understood her reference. But, no use crying over wasted pop culture lines - at least she wasn't covered in jingle bells, she thought, shuddering. The more she saw what other people were working with, the more Megiddo thought she'd won the costume lottery. Nodding, she fell into position a few feet behind the older page. Following directions was fully within her capabilities, and on the odd chance that the thing in the wrecked tent was a) hideous b) angry and c) deadly, she was more than happy to let someone else go right ahead. "Okay," she said. "Be careful." She thought she'd been prepared for anything, but when the youma sprang from the shadows, Megiddo let out a startled yelp that she immediately pretended she had not let out when the creature resolved itself into nothing larger or more dangerous than a dog. "Are you ******** kidding me," she deadpanned, pitcher raised. All bark, no bite, she went ahead and evaluated, despite the gross, awful dental situation the youma had going on. With all her might, she lobbed her pitcher at the giant rat. Sort of like bowling. "Okay, gimme a strike," she urged, watching the pitcher sail through the air.

His bells jingling, Ys circled the monster so he wasn't between it and Megiddo. It wouldn't be fair not to let her get a crack at it too... The rat snarled like a dog as it arched it's back, the coarse fur standing up along its spine. It might not be the biggest youma ever, but those teeth looked nasty. The page was not keen on finding out if it would give him rabbies or some other kind of youma disease. If he didn't know the things ate energy, he would have sworn it fed off filth by the rank, musty odor it gave off.
Catching sight of a flash of something off to his side, Ys glanced that way in time to see a silver pitcher, the one the other knight had been carrying, come flying towards the youma. The perfect aim resulted in a clang as it connected and a burbling yelp from the monster. The page shook his fist in the air as he cheered.
"Nice hit!" He called out to her as he rushed in again, pulling back a long leg to take another swing at the giant rat. Stunned as it was by being smacked with a pitcher, it wasn't looking to get punted... only realizing what was going on after it was sailing through the air, screeching. When it hit the ground, it lay there stunned for a moment before it struggled up onto its filthy feet and scuttle off into the tents.
"Bloody hell... after it!" Maybe he should have figured on it trying to escape, but it had still come as a surprise to Ys when it did. Usually the monsters kept attacking... but he couldn't afford to let it escape now to cause havoc later. Bells ringing again, the tall man took off after it, orange eyes darting to make sure no customers were wandering around back here. Wouldn't want any of them to get in the way of this and maybe get hurt.

She hadn't exactly given thought to how she was going to get her pitcher back once she'd thrown it, so the rat taking off was actually a godsend. "Right!" she yelled, taking off behind Ys, scooping up her pitcher by the handle as she raced to follow the youma. It wasn't that strong and it wasn't that big - this wouldn't possibly be that hard, right? Well, besides the fact that they'd now managed to lose it. Which was a first. How the hell did you lose a youma? Like this, apparently. Megiddo swore under her breath, following Ys as closely as she could, guided by the sound of his jingling bells whenever he got too far ahead of her in the maze of tents. "How far could it have gone?" she called, but then, it was like chasing a cat in terms of speed. "If we had sight of it, we could split up and corner it," she suggested. Anything had to work better than just this blind running!
