Keren slept uneasily these days, catching shut eye in fits and starts. It was patently bizarre, because come morning she always woke feeling refreshed but when she fell back into bed at the end of the day and spent hours twisting and turning and staring at the ceiling and losing track of time, it all came back to her. Ah, yes, it is like this every night.
Even on the surrounding she'd slept better than this. Even when she was just barely returned from space, she'd slept better than this. Keren was a heavy sleeper, had been one her whole life. Her parents told stories about it. Keren could sleep through anything. Except in the weeks since her kidnapping and subsequent awakening, she could barely sleep at all.
She would jostle herself awake in a cold sweat several times each night and have to look around and reassure herself that she wasn't back in the mirrorspace, that she hadn't been transformed back into Megiddo against her will, or worse - in Keren's worst dreams, she became one of the darkly beautiful senshi, and instead of a gray wool jumperskirt wore black silk and iridescent purple tulle.
It was one of those dark dreams that Keren woke from now, eyes snapping open to look frantically around her darkened bedroom. Grasping at the sheets, she fixed her gaze on the clock. It was a bit after midnight. There were still over six hours between her and her alarm. Six hours leaving her alone with her dreams, sending her back to mirrorspace over and over again. Keren adjusted her sheets and stared at the glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. Six hours. Best to get it over with.

If Acubens wasn't near by Keren in the days following her kidnapping, then she was never away for long. She lingered outside of her window, searching thuroughly for youma and negas. And even when she was sure it was safe for her page to go to sleep, she checked again, in case something slipped in while she was checking elsewhere. She left only when she was certain, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Keren was safe.
But then, there always was that shadow, wasn't there? That lingering feeling of "what if" when Acubens could not be with her. You're not there anymore, what if they took her again? What if they hurt her? What if...? What if...? It didn't help that Acubens' hadn't exactly forgiven herself for allowing Keren to be taken in the first place.
And now, on top of all that, she was a page. A warrior for the order. The chaos would flock to her like they did all the rest of her kind. If Keren powered up, for Acubens knew she was curious, chaos would know where she slept. Where her family slept... oh god...
It was thinking like that which leda Acubens from her own bed to that of Keren's. She crouched on the foot board, balls of her feet balanced precariously on the edge with her knees bent and her hands between her legs, keeping herself steady like the dark protector from the comic books. She didn't even blink when Keren gasped awake.
"Nightmares," she asked softly, not wanting to frighten her, but needing to let her know she was there. This was, after all, the first time she'd been in her room.

Keren did not immediately look, certain that the murmur in the dark had been little more than her imagination. Nightmares? Well. Of course. But then she got achingly curious and the more she tried not to look, tried to just pull the covers around her and go back to sleep- Keren had to look. Lilac eyes flicked open and tentatively stared towards the foot of the bed.
It was Acubens. Keren would have recognized the senshi anywhere, although her protector was certainly out of place in her bedroom. A single streak of light coming in through the shutters illuminated the superhero. Noir. Cinematic. Slightly creepy, considering Keren had never actually invited Acubens into her house.
She jumped slightly. "Jesus <********>," Keren swore, scrambling to her knees. "What are you doing in my bedroom, Acubens?"
Keren couldn't figure out where she stood with the senshi. Acubens had convinced her of her loyalty, and knew that she doubled as Megiddo, but beyond that - the air between them felt charged, but it was impossible to tell if that was because of sexual frustration or latent distrust. She drew the blankets around herself, staring at the window. Although the blinds had been shut, the chill in the room told her it was still open.
"I mean it," she added, feeling exposed in tank top and shorts. She resettled the comforter around herself. "How did you even get in here? And why?" THis was so breaking and entering. And she was going to have to talk to her parents about the burglar alarm. To be perfectly honest she didn't mind that it was Acubens, but if anyone else had snuck into her bedroom...
Keren shivered, and it was only partly because of the open window. Lesath sneaking into her bedroom would have been very bad.

Acubens jumped at Keren screamed, truly not meaning to frighten her. She flashed an apologetic smile, leaning forward on her footboard, hands resting ont he matress instead of the wooden frame. After her arms, her legs followed, crossing under her body so she could sit Indian-Style on top of Keren's comforter. "I got in through the window," she explained quietly, though she knew Keren already worked that peice of the puzzle out. "I got in so I could make sure you're alright. After what happened..." Acubens trailed off, eyes down cast in residual shame of her own failure. "After what happened, I find that I can't sleep until I know you're safe and sound in bed. Though I have taken to keeping out of sight. Lesath won't try the same thing twice, but I don't want anything else coming after you too."
Something more dangerous.
She didn't vocalize the concern, but it was implied. Lesath was easy. Acubens was lucky that Lesath still loved her enough not to want to hurt her in any significant way. But another foe... Xenotime for instance... they wouldn't be so forgiving.

Keren narrowed her eyes at Acubens, trying to figure out if the senshi's Edward Cullen-like behavior was charming or creepy. "Okay," she said slowly, drawing the Y out into previously unexplored regions of the vocal fry register. "I guess that's. Um. Flattering?" No, not really. Actually, everything that had happened to her since she'd attracted Acubens's attention could probably be classified as "bad" or "worse." For example, being kidnapped by psycho space aliens from beyond the furthest ring! Definitely a negative.
Still feeling a bit distrustful, she reached for the teddybear perched on her nightstand and pulled it defensively into her arms. "I guess," said Keren, trying to articulate the confusion she felt, "I just... I don't understand why you care." It didn't make any sense. Like, forget for a second that Micah had allegedly sent Acubens to protect her, which was weird in and of itself. What did a senshi owe to a sixteen-year-old girl? Why hadn't Acubens just blown her off by now?
"Whatever kinda debt you owe to my girlfriend's gotta be pretty huge," she said, lips brushing the bear's fuzzy head. "What's she got on you? Dirty pictures? Video of you robbing a liquor store?" It just didn't make sense. While she had initially appreciated that someone was willing to make sure she didn't get attacked by Youma on her way home from school, Acubens's company seemed more and more like it was more trouble than it was worth. And she didn't even want to think about Megiddo right now. It had been traumatizing enough the first time she transformed - Keren would do anything to avoid triggering it again.

Oh god, she had a teddy bear. It brought a sentimental smile to Acubens' lips. And as Keren brought her lips down onto it's head, her heart only swelled with greater affection. Had she been in another state of mind, one not so fogged over by concern and confusion, she would have reached out, gathing the girl and the bear in her arms. But how would Keren take to having the girl who she had recently believed to be a traitor, and still might not totally believe to be loyal, holding her again? Last time drained energy and shock of discovery knocked her out, making her complacent, but now.
Now Keren could fight her off. And rejection of Acubens would be rejection of Micah. Keren wouldn't intend it, but Acubens' mind would make the connection regardless. She woldn't even really mean to. Baring that in mind, Acubens stayed in her place, sitting on the foot of Keren's bed, sparkling farses aside.
And if she wasn't already off kilter enough, Keren's questions certainly pushed her over the edge. Damn. Keren was smart. Acubens had lost track of that somewhere between her own revenge and her desparate quest to save her. And now it was coming back to bite her.
She had to look away as she thought.
"Micah..." she began carefully, "well... let's just say that... I wouldn't exist if it weren't for her. She sort of... gave me my life back." In a sense. Not a true lie, but also not a true truth. It was somewhere between. An omition of sorts, really. "It's very complicated. I don't even really understand it. Just accept my protection and thank Micah for it when you can. Don't try and find the reasons." You may not like what you find.

Keren narrowed her eyes at the senshi, ready to call bullshit both insistently and loudly - but didn't, not quite yet. Because she was clever, and the fact that she now had a super-powered alternate identity apparently triggered as sort of a panic button for her mortal soul was certainly helping. "Is this like how Bruce Wayne puts on the ******** cowl and drops his voice an octave and everyone is like, 'oh my god, who the ******** is batman, it's not possibly the mysteriously-missing multi-billionaire?' Still a better love story than Twilight. By the way."
She gestured to the senshi sitting on the foot of her bed, and to the open window, and to her darkened bedroom.
"This Edward Cullen thing? Not attractive." Just so they were perfectly clear on the matter. "You wanna sit in my bedroom all night instead of patrolling the city or whatever cool s**t you pretty-skirted superheroines are supposed to do-" Completely ignoring the fact that she could also be described as a pretty-skirted superheroine, because that had been traumatizing as all get out and whatever Megiddo was, she wasn't the same thing as Acubens. "That's, um, your business entirely. But you've gotta at least let me let you in the window."
"'Cuz this, sweetheart? This is breaking and entering."
Which raised the question of could-you-even-prosecute-a-superhero-for-trespassing? (She was willing to bet on yes. Albeit with great difficulty.)
"So, be level with me," said Keren, eyes sparkling as she set the teddybear aside. "Are you Micah under the metaphorical cowl? 'Cuz if you aren't, this is creepy, and if you are I think you owe me an apology and at least ten minutes of French kissing and heavy petting."

Acubens visibly leaned back at Keren's sudden onslaught of pop culture and internet references. Her mouth fell open in obvious surprise, act of the strange hero melting away. And through it all... through it all the only thinkg Acubens could think of to say was "But baby... I am the night..." And she didn't castize her mind for not sending that through her censor because it worked with Keren. Her surprise eventually gave way to calm and then her face split into a smile. She should have known. Keren was far too smart to keep in the dark for very long.
"I guess if I really wanted to protect you from this... I should have just left you alone, right?" Maybe then she wouldn't have even awakened as Megiddo. She crawled forward, settling herself closer to Keren, her knees touching Keren's like they were grade-schoolers about to play patty cake. "If it makes you feel any better, this is the first time I've come to your window. Other nights I patrol, and I only cover your street once a week." And then Acubens' face fell, serious expressing taking the place of the smile. "And in my defense, Bella was never in real danger of actually dying."
And then the guilt. "Like I said, if I left you alone, Lesath never would have kidnapped you, and you probably would never be Megiddo, and you wouldn't be having these nightmares."

"Speak English," said Keren, who arguably hadn't been just now. All that the senshi moving closer made her do was slide out of bed and move towards the door, because returned Batman quip or not - Acubens hadn't answered her question straight. "Are you Micah, or are you not?" She couldn't take any more half-truths or clever wordplay - she just needed to know.
If Acubens had never taken an interest in her, it was true that Lesath would probably have never come after her. This much Keren could wrap her head around. Whether she would have never been Megiddo, though, was more of a debatable issue to her. As reluctant as she was to return to her magical girl form, it had triggered as a reflex. And that, more than anything, seemed to tell her that it was as much a part of her as the color of her eyes or the whorls of her fingerprints.
Releasing a held breath, Keren grabbed the silver pitcher out of the air, her pajamas melting into the grey battledress. "I need a straightforward answer," she said, twisting her fingers around the handle. Or, god help her, she would throw the senshi out the window. If Acubens wasn't Micah, she wasn't sure she ever wanted to see Acubens again.
(And if Acubens was Micah, then she wanted to kiss her senseless and tell her that everything ever was okay, night terrors or not.)

Acubens watched as Keren got up form the head, frozen somewhere between dying, wanting to tell Keren everything that she was and agonizingly terrified that Keren will not want her, knowing that she is a traitor waiting to turn to the enemy.
And then that transformation. That damned dress that should have looked frumpy but was just so hopelessly Keren that Acubens wanted to run to her, rip her hair from those stupid braids and just ravish her because Keren was be beautiful no matter what she was wearing and Acubens had never been so in love. Or maybe it was just the adrenaline talking.
And also moving her off of Keren's bed, forward, towards the new page. It was only when she was standing in front of Keren, far shorter and still looking like she wanted to hit something. Like maybe if she just looked scary enough, Keren would drop the subject and leave her alone for a moment so Acubens could go back to feeling sorry for herself.
But instead of the outburst of aggression, Acubens only dropped to her knees, hands seizing Keren's, pitcher and all. And then her guise faded away, leaving Micah in her normal outfit of denim jeans and white tank top.
"Of course I'm Micah. I've always been Micah, and I'm sorry I lied to you. And what Lesath told you was completely true. If you weren't with me, I'd betray all that was good for her, but you are here and please don't leave me because I will burn down all of heaven for you." She talked herself breathless and she couldn't even try, and that made her insanely angry, but then she iddn't care. "Just don't leave me."

"You're a melodramatic idiot," pronounced Megiddo as she watched Acubens melt away, revealing the girl underneath. Seeing Micah's face under the senshi glamour soothed her, even if she confessed to what Lesath had said being essentially true. Plainly put, Keren was mature for her age but she was still a sixteen-year-old girl and rational behavior wasn't necessarily a required factor for her. "But, you're my melodramatic idiot."
(She was really, really relieved that it was Micah and not some creepy stranger.)
Gently, she pried the pitcher from the other girl's grasp and dropped it aside. It clanked softly against the carpet. "Why would I do something stupid like that?" she asked, sinking to her knees. She placed her hands gently against Micah's cheeks, Megiddo glamour melting away.
"I want you to teach me about this magical girl stuff," Keren whispered, feeling emboldened for having shifted in and out of her page form of her own volition. Maybe this was why Death hadn't taken her on the Surrounding - because Life had better plans for her.
"And you owe me a lot of kisses," she added, pressing her lips to Micah's.

It was odd that only relief could allow tears to sting at Micah's eyes. As Keren proclaimed Micah as her own, it allowed her mind to release the emotions that flowed so freely for her. And still she laughed. Oh god, she was suddenly someone's mentor? She who still clung so to Polaris' side. Teach me, Polaris, because now I have someone who depends on me. And she'd have to teach Keren about space... she'd not even been yet! Oh, this would be fun.
"I'll..." Micah stopped to sniff. "I'll teach you what I know. It's not much, but it's something, right?" After all, how much different could pages be from senshi? They were all magical space warriors, right? Ah, she'd just wing it. That's how she dealt with everyone else.
And as Keren kissed her, there was a sudden calm that rushed over Micah. there was someone she knew on the outside, someone from normal life who could do this with her. It wasn't Alexij, of course. This might just be better, actually. It took Micah a moment to be able to feel her lips again, and whens he did it was only for a moment before she pushed away again. "And I'll make good on that debt, but later. When I'm not... trespassing and when it's not late. When we train. Together. Tomorrow night, I'll meet you at the park. Then I'll pay you back as many kisses as you want, alright?"
She suited and stood, clad again in her tattered skirt and claws shoes. "Sleep well, Megiddo," she cooed, hopping up onto the window sill and then out into the night. She wouldn't stop patrolling Keren's street once a week, but she wouldn't patrol her house anymore. Megiddo was competent, if only because Keren was a spit fire. And that would help Acubens sleep that night.
