Internet connection keeps dropping out on me, so I don't know how long I can stick around.
Anyway, I was wondering, do you know whether it is possible for an earthquake in one area of the world to trigger another area in a different part?
They're already evacuating San Fransisco and other California areas in preparation for the oncoming tsunami, which is expected to hit at around 10 AM EST (about one hour after this posting). California is on a major fault line, which they are discussing. I was wondering if it would be possible for them to be hit by an earthquake as a result. I've never heard of it happening, so I don't know. Hope I'm not alarming anyone...

Well, on the upside, at least the spotlight over Charlie Sheen is fading. *Is utterly appalled at recent news about him which just gets stupider and stupider.* I'm not saying the tsunamis and earthquakes are a good thing, but for Charlie Sheen's sake, this should probably cut out much of his spotlight and prevent the media from helping to over-inflate his proudly self-proclaimed over-inflated ego. rolleyes

Only in the U.S. will we interrupt news on a world wide environmental disaster to talk about Charlie Sheen. gonk
It depends on what you mean by "trigger earthquakes" there are mini earthquakes that happen after the initial quake called aftershocks that can happen for up to days or weeks after a large quake like this. There may be a chance of unrelated earthquakes to happen (just as in bad timing). If the fault line settles, smaller quakes can happen too. I'm no expert, but I doubt we're going to have another huge quake as a direct response to the first. California has it's own fault line, but it would have to get hit pretty hard to loosen it enough to quake on its own. If anything it can be a good thing, they're more prepared for tsunamis and quakes then some other places in the world. The reason why places are getting evacuated is because of the tsunami directly from Japan, and it's more precaution then anything else.

I understand why he's famous...but that famous? Anyway, apparently now there's over 88,000 people unaccounted for, that's such a scary number. emo

Thank GOD I got out of japan in time.......My sister called from england and wanted me and my wife to come with my brother-in-law and Father-in-law to see her off at her wedding....So I got out a day before and......I got a call from my friends who were in japan at the time. They are ok and not really hurt. Although my friend's brother has a broken leg, but is alive.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this terrible tragedy. My heart is breaking; I am literally crying. For all of you that can read Japanese: 日本人のために祈っています。 (Translation: I am praying for the Japanese people.)

My eyes keep tearing too, this is the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in 1,200 years. The footage is disturbing just watching homes and cars get washed away in the flood, it's really terrible. crying

I'm also praying for the Japanese people; it's just too much to bear at some points. I wonder if they have mobilized Red Cross units already? And if not, how soon?

Not only has Japan launched it's own forces but... Quote: Japan received condolence messages and offers of assistance from a range of international leaders. According to the United Nations, search and rescue teams from 45 countries had been offered to Japan. Japan specifically requested teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and the U.S.;[91] it also requested (via its space agency JAXA) the activation of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters, allowing satellite imagery of affected regions to be readily shared with rescue and aid organisations.[92] The United States moved naval vessels closer to Japan for the purposes of providing aid.[93] Germany is sending search and rescue specialists from the Technisches Hilfswerk.[94] When it comes to the people's health I think they're being well taken care of, or at least as much as you can during this time of tragedy. There's still a lot of drowning victims and homeless left over from this environmental disaster, it's sad but they're getting help at the very least. I agree with the news, it rings of Haiti's earthquake devastation.
