Naste smiled at him, moved by his thoughtfulness. While protecting fellow tribe-mates went without saying, there was still something about stating it out loud that...Naste shook her head, not quite sure where that thought was leading, and not interested enough to try to find out.
"Fish, huh?" she asked, glancing to the water just to the side of them, and steering them a bit closer toward it. "What do you find so interesting about fish?"

((I'm so sorry, real!Shin XD))
"They're just...fascinating," Shin responded, joining her as she peered down into the water. "They can be so big or small and so many different colors and they can breath under water and they don't even need to hunt anything but little tiny fish-foods, and they have scales and they're just so...fascinating,"
And then Shin realized that he was rambling, and he blushed ever so ligthtly--he was sure he looked ridiculous, as the pink blush against his blue fur probably made his face turn purple.

Naste couldn't help but smile as she listed to Shin talk about the fish--while she personally didn't share his interest, it was kind of nice, listening to him talk about something he was so passionate about.
"Is here a good place to look at fish, do you think?" she asked, deferring to the expert. Maybe if she really looked at some fish, she would come to understand. And if not, it still wasn't a half-bad way to pass the time. With him, not with the fish, she meant. But she'd only say that to herself, so far.

Shin considered the question seriously for a few minutes, absently watching the pool of baby fish beneath their paws.
"I guess here's an okay place," Shin eventually answered. "But I know some really awesome places to look at fish--there's this one place! It's so cool! The fish look like they change colors!"

"And where is this 'really cool place'?" Naste asked, with an intrigued smile. She hardly had any plans for the day, so why not go and check it out? Grandpa wouldn't be waiting for her to come back.
Grandpa...
Naste shook the sad thoughts from her head, and smiled at Shin again, hoping he hadn't noticed anything the matter with her.

Shin did notice a shadow cross over the pretty 'Phim's face, and he was about to ask about it, ask what was wrong, if there was anything he could do to help whatever it was--but then she was smiling again, and Shin could tell that if he hadn't imagined it (he was...pretty sure he hadn't...), she didn't want to talk about it. Okay.
"It's a little ways that way," Shin said, coming to a stop and tilting his head back the way he had come from. "Kinda a far ways, though...but I guess it's not your feet that are hurting...do you wanna come with me?" Shin asked with a wide, winning grin. Going to the Shiny Fish with Naste sure beat the heck out of exploring alone!

Naste assumed she had hidden it quickly enough that Shin hadn't seen her expression, and was glad. Maybe she would tell him about her grandpa sometime, but not now. She didn't want to drag him down with her own sadness.
"How far a way aways?" Naste asked, looking a bit uncertain. She did want to go, but... "I've never been very far away from here," she admitted to him, feeling a bit embarrassed.

Shin thought for a few minutes, trying to remember exactly how long it had taken him to get from there to where they were now.
"Hm...I guess maybe a little less than half a day? But they look especially pretty at sunset, it's like they match the sky," Shin added quickly with a winning grin--he saw her falter, and he didn't want to loose his chance at company.

"That's not so far then," she said with a smile. Putting on a brave face--she had gone nearly that far, once or twice before, but somehow it felt like there was a world of difference between the furthest place she had gone to, and this place Shin wanted to go to, that was just a bit further away than that.
It was like she thought the world ended at those familiar landmarks, she realized, and mentally chided herself for being so silly. There was a world beyond that. Of course there was...

Shin saw more than she thought he did--and he noticed her hesitation and frowned slightly, first wondering if it was her wing acting up or what.
He guessed it must be an 'or what', though, because she said her wing was fine, and she didn't seem to be favoring it...
"Naste? Is everything alright?"

"Yes," she said easily enough, speaking in a confident tone she couldn't quite make herself believe in.
"It's just..." she shook her head, smiled. "It's silly, but...I've never been that far away from home before. Not even with grandfather..." she trailed off, memories coming back to her. Of the time they had spent together. As well as rememberance of the fact that he was gone now.

"Oh," Shin said, nodding after a moment. "It's not silly at all! I only just started exploring myself, I was so nevous to start," he added with a laugh, offering an easy, reassuring smile.
"If you don't want to go, that's okay," he added, smiling simply. "There's tons of other cool stuff that way too!"

Naste smiled back, comforted by his words. She deliberated a while, giving thought to both why she should and shouldn't go so far away from home, from the only place she had known her entire life.
"No," she said at last, "I want to go. I'd very much like to see these fish, Shin."
Left unspoken was the thought that she would also very much like to explore, to go further than she had gone before. Grandpa had been full of tales of great adventure and wonder, whose heroes she had always admired--well then, who was to say that now, given the chance and a guide, she couldn't do the same?

((Posting for Julie~ ))
Shin smiled widely in spite of himself, only realizing at that moment how disappointed he would've been if she hadn't agreed to come with him. "Good. I'm sure these fish will be greatly honored by your presense," Shin said, bowing his head lightly--it was obvious he was honored too. "Let's go if we're going, huh?" he said with a smile as he started walking in the right direction.

She was slightly taken aback by his bow. It was something so formal, and something that hardly fit a fox as laidback as he; although Naste would never dare to say such a thing out loud.
She followed closely behind him, so they could more easily talk as they walked to go see these fish.
"Are you from around here, Shin?" she asked. If he was, it was strange that she had not seen him before--while she had not explored in great breadth, she had in great depth, and she thought she knew all the foxes of the area, few as they were.
