A Test of Will
Finding Nina's new guardian

Why was all this happening? It didn't make sense; it didn't seem fair! She felt that she should be used to life disappointing her, but it seemed as though everything was happening too quickly and hit her too hard. All the jostling from one place to another was one thing: she never had the impression that she belonged to any place in particular to begin with, as she never exactly had a stable living condition. However, circumstance went too far when they took her only stable component of life away. She couldn't take it anymore! Ella was her friend, her sister, and was always there for her when things became almost too much to bear. They had no right to do that!

"Careful about going in there. Her whole personality has taken a turn for the worse. Seems she's embraced her demonic genes wholeheartedly," a scientist warned Ephron, a partial attempt to get him to reconsider trying to connect with the young child. If there was any faltering in his resolve, it was best for the hopeful guardian to just turn back now.

The employees at the facility had already explained that the genes of Nina's that comprised "revenge" for her had previously only surfaced as potentially harmless pranks where she felt they were needed. She was given a booster shot by one of the scientists at one point, and the same man later found out that Nina had spiked his coffee with black ink to repay the pain she had felt. "Karma" seemed to be a word that was quickly approaching meaning in her limited vocabulary, albeit a little skewed.

However, since Ella had left the facility to live with a new guardian, Nina seemed to allow this revenge track of mind get the better of her. She refused to keep it contained any longer, as if she were constantly throwing a temper tantrum. At this rate, she was risking exhausting herself beyond her limits, but she was shunning anybody approaching her. She began attacking those that got too close, in a blind rage, feeling that everyone was at fault.

Ephron was already told the risks, but dismissed the warnings. It wasn't that he was underestimating what Nina was capable of -- they relayed horror stories about that as well -- but rather felt more keen on thinking of who she really was, deep down: a young child who was currently feeling a deep sense of loss. He smiled to the scientist that was speaking to him, grateful for the cautionary words but replying with a simple, "I'll be fine." With that, he brushed past to have a small chat with this "little monster."

"Hrmph," the employee snorted, "It's your funeral, pal."

Nina's hands and ankles had been bound to where she was seated for some sense of security, but they were loose enough so as not to harm her. She appeared outwardly calm, but she was radiating rage so much that it was easy to feel. She glared up at Ephron through her cascading bangs, wanting nothing to do with yet another "parent candidate." He grinned at her, trying to be friendly but only succeeding in infuriating her further. Raising a hand up in greeting, he moved closer. "Hello, I'm Ephron."

"I DON'T CARE!" she bellowed, meeting his hand with a surprisingly strong bite -- one that she refused to release. Perhaps this would teach them all a lesson: she just wanted things to go back to normal!

Ephron twitched at the attack, holding back the reflexive urge to leap backward to release her grip. No, instead he remained as still as he could with such pressure being applied to tear up his hand as was possible, all the while maintaining a partial smile. "Q-Quite the grip you have there!" he managed to say. Glancing around, he opted to take a seat alongside her, but made no effort to pry his hand from the clutches of Nina's baby teeth.

They sat in silence for a few moments, Nina focusing on how to get this new person to leave all the sooner while Ephron was silently studying the way she was handling things. Not too well, by the looks of it. His eyes landed on the markings that extended mostly along the right side of her body, and blinked when it appeared they were pulsing slightly in response to her anger. Lack of vocal communication seemed to be less than effective in this instance, so he decided to say something, lest this condensed atmosphere linger any longer. Hiding a cringe as Nina attempted to grind her teeth, he mused, "Those are some interesting markings you have."

Surprisingly, she released her grip almost instantaneously, but not with any reaction that Ephron had been hoping for. "They mark me for the monster that I am!" she snapped, apparently quoting a section of conversation she had overheard eavesdropping. The man was rather impressed with how well she grasped the words, despite being so young of age. He could tell that it bothered Nina that her demonic genes, these tattoos, were taking over her body. By her actions, it was apparent that she felt she was pure demon and not the half-blood she truly was. "Like father, like daughter..." Nina muttered, almost silently, as she tried to decide whether or not to go after this guy's torn hand once more.

"True..." Ephron began, feeling Nina p***k with surprised fury at the comment, "but that's not all. You're afraid vengeance is taking hold of you, correct?" Nina grit her teeth and tossed her head away, refusing to respond to such an insensitive question. Ephron tapped a finger on his jaw in thought as he continued, "However, I don't believe that you have really been taken over by Revenge. If that was the case, you wouldn't be able to control those wings of yours nearly as well as you do. They're Hope's, aren't they? Cydi's, wasn't it?" Nina tilted her head slightly, eyes just out of reach of looking at the man. "You haven't lost hope at all. The feeling is just out of reach of you at the moment, but it's still there."

Nina continued to scowl, but it was getting harder for her. She glanced at Ephron out of the corner of her eye, commenting with a simple, "...You're weird."

They sat in silence for a bit longer. Ephron could feel that Nina wasn't as furious as before, but she was still highly uncomfortable. Not just with him, however, but with her whole situation. There wasn't really anything else he could offer her at the moment, and his time with her was so very short. He would offer her all the time in the world if he was able to, but things at this facility had gotten so strict once Nina had become nearly unmanageable in her sorrow; his time was almost up.

He rose from where he sat, slightly clumsily due to the amount of time he had spent sitting so still on such a hard seat -- his legs were going numb! He took a few steps toward the door before tilting himself back around to the spawn child, that goofy grin still plastered on his face. "Well, Nina, I'm going to have to get going. There's one thing I'd like to request of you before I leave, though. Will you hear me out?" The girl remained still, but did not refuse the inquiry. "I'd like it if I was able to know something before I left, in the off-chance I don't see you again. Could you promise me that you'll never let go of that hope you still have inside of you?"

Nina jerked, visibly stunned. The question seemed so alien to her, and for a while she sat in solitude, trying to decipher what seemed like a foreign concept. Was something like that really considered a "request"? "Do... Do you think I'll be able to see Ella again?" she squeaked.

The man's smile broadened as he turned to face her fully once more. "Nina, I don't think that any guardian in their right minds would keep you from seeing her again. I know I wouldn't, and I'm sure anyone else that you have met with thus far would be glad to meet her themselves as well. You have nothing to worry about -- you'll see her again. Besides," he nodded, "I'm sure she misses you a great deal also. She's probably pestering her guardian about seeing you as we speak!"

"Then...," the child fidgeted, unable to hold back her tears anymore, yet achieved a serene smile nonetheless, "Then I promise."

Ephron's Journal
Entry #1

The guardian flipped through the empty pages of a new journal, attempting to get the feel for it. He didn't really have great experience using such things, so was a little reluctant to put pen to paper. He sighed softly, remembering that the facility highly encouraged that he keep one, if nothing more than to keep a record with his time with little Nina. However, he couldn't help but think they were only after the raw data from it. Either way, he had agreed, and he knew that it would at least come in handy for himself to look back on.

His handwriting was slightly messy, and there were marks made from hesitation in numerous areas, but he chose his words carefully.

There was quite a bit of nervous energy hanging in the air on the day that I first brought Nina home. She was still very uncomfortable with the idea of living with me, but even more so on the idea of living with the techs any longer, strapped to a seat in a small laboratory room. To be honest, it made me nervous to have her unconfined (surely she must have been more violent than what I had witnessed, after all), but the idea of her staying like that was enough to keep me from paying such thoughts any heed. She really is a sweet kid, albeit her actions are ruled mainly by her emotions.

Since then, she's been improving quite a bit. No, she still doesn't open up to me much, but her negativity seems to be less concentrated in her being. She hasn't been with me very long, but I think things are going to be just fine. She's been getting used to living in a busy society. As a matter of fact, I have as well.

I only just recently came to this town, and wasn't planning on staying unless there was something that kept me here. Maybe I was looking for a reason to stay, I'm not sure, but I'm not disappointed in the outcome in the least. Sure, it's a lot of work to keep a child happy and healthy, let alone one with so much background, but I guess you could call it a labor of love.

Anyway, back on track here. Nina and I have been scoping out the town these past few weeks, trying to get a feel for everything. It is really difficult for me to tell when she likes something or not, as she seems to be keeping herself from voicing her opinion. Well, unless she vehemently dislikes something, that is. Seems she's not all that fond of large dogs...

To my surprise, despite being so antisocial, she seems to get along great with other children from the facility. It appears that there are quite a few living in this area, and because of their similar histories, I think Nina finds that she can relate to them easier. She's already met three, and got along with them rather well, going so far as to call one of them a definite friend in the process! Is it normal for a parent to feel so ecstatic to the fact that their child is making friends?

I've read over as much of Nina's file as I could when I was over at the facility. I know she's had a difficult life up to this point, and just glancing over as much of her heritage as was not blacked out, it doesn't seem like it's going to be very easy in the time to come. At the very least, I can keep her from experiencing parental abandonment again, but that may prove to be only a minor aspect to dread. I know very little of angels and demons, and despite the fact that I have been researching in order to better understand the circumstance, I know it won't be enough.

I'm not going to give up, however. I may be ignorant in some areas, but that doesn't make me useless. I'll always be here as moral support, as a friend, as a person that she can go to for any sort of advice. I'm not going to mislead her, and I'm open to opinion, but this isn't something that is easily interpreted to a child. As she grows, it may inevitably end up being construed as a lie, but that isn't something I can avoid -- just something that I can try to overcome.

Yeesh, this is starting to sound more like a diary than a journal entry...

I really hope that Nina continues to progress so well. Seeing her so emotionally drained and in such rage as on the day we first met only manages to make me feel like I'm failing her in some way. As much as I want to do everything I can for her, I know she's going to need to figure things out on her own. It's going to be one bumpy ride; I just hope I can fulfill my promise to help her in the best way possible.

Ephron's Journal
Entry #2

Ephron found himself pacing about his room slightly, uncharacteristic anxiety held fast his being. Clutched in his hands was a note he had found in his mailbox earlier that day; of all places, from the facility. He didn't really have a problem with the place, but the contents of the letter weren't necessarily aimed at him specifically.

He took a sideways glance at the journal on top of his bedside table and sighed. If nothing else, getting all his scattered thoughts together on paper may help him come to a consensus.

Well... this is not going to be a fun week. I got a little note in the mail today, informing me of some of the things that Nina should be doing at her age. Well, the sort of things that come with being the product of gene splicing from angel and demon DNA, that is.

This isn't helping matters... To the point, they suggest that she learn about her DNA donors. That's all well and good, but they want her to come back to the facility for it. She still hasn't exactly adjusted to life in more stable living conditions, and she abhors that place for... well, many reasons. She's lived there nearly her whole life, and it hasn't been the easiest. Or the most loving.

Don't get me wrong; I think it would be the best possible course for her to learn about her biological parents. It's an excellent idea, it's just... I don't know if she's ready to face that place so soon.

Speaking of Nina, there is something I've come to realize about her temper that has been bothering me. She is an easily agitated child, that much is clear, but it runs deeper than that. In all my time with her, I've only ever seen her cry once. She's got a strong sense of willpower, so it isn't that surprising, but there have been quite a few instances where any other child would have cried that she has encountered. Just the other week, she stumbled and smacked her head on the dining room table. Swelling left a goose egg on the side of her head, but she only proceeded to take anger out on the table (unfortunately, I'm going to be needing a new table).

I'm not 100% positive on the matter, but I think she's confusing her emotions. She reacts to anything negative with anger, even things that are normally dealt with in sadness. Anything positive tends to confuse her, and she oftentimes has a hard time reacting to it. Granted, these are just a couple things I've been beginning to notice with her. They may not be correct, and there's no way of knowing one way or another until she's warmed up to me more. She likes it here and she's happy -- I've heard her say this -- so at least I know she's better off this way. I just wish I could help her out more.

Ephron paused to stare at the page, taking in everything he had just scribbled down. By this time, he was sitting comfortably in a chair, and his eyes wandered to the facility's note stranded to the side of his hand. He mulled over the thoughts in his mind, absently nibbling on the end of his pen before he sighed, scratching the bangs out of his face. In smaller writing, he amended his entry to add a couple more sentences to the end.

I've decided that it would be best for Nina to go to the facility for her parent meeting. She needs to learn to deal with obstacles that lie in her path and meet them head-on with as much willpower as she puts forth in life. Not everything can go the way we want it to, and I hope she realizes that I'm not trying to be mean in this manner. If nothing else, I'm sure she would enjoy learning about her angelic attributes, as she's seemed so angered by the fact that most people only see her demonic traits.

I just hope this isn't going to be some horrible mistake...

Ephron's Journal
Entry #3

The day had been a long one, long and eventful. He almost forgot to close the front door once he and Nina were both home, and haphazardly tossed the car keys onto the counter as he popped something quick into the oven. Twenty minutes, huh? he thought to himself as he set the timer. What could he do to keep himself awake during that time? Honestly, he thought it would be best to head to bed as soon as possible, but dinner was necessary.

Wandering down the hallway to his bedroom, he stole a peek into Nina's room to see how she was holding up. Sprawled on her bed, she managed to pass out in the couple minutes they had been home, hand still clutching the gravelly geode. He smiled to himself; he'd wait to wake her up until after dinner had cooled enough to eat. However, he came to the conclusion that he should probably get his thoughts down onto paper about the evening, while they were still fresh in his mind.

Very, very long day. The meeting was actually quite pleasant, I was surprised, and Nina seemed to react to the atmosphere of the whole thing rather well. It helped that there were other facility-kids there to keep her spirits up, for her to relate to, and Ilyrosa was there as well. That simple fact seemed to really brighten her up fast, despite her being entirely against the whole visit.

Ahh, but I really should write in full sentences here. Pardon the random thoughts, the day was really draining. There was a lot of information to take in.

Nina did really take the whole thing well, once the meeting got going. There were a few things that concerned me about how she reacted to some of the material, however. When she was shown the pictures of her genetic "parents," her attitude seemed to take a strange turn. It was almost déjà vu from the time I had first come in contact with her. Well... minus the rage, at least. Her genetics have always been such a touchy subject for her, and I think I'm starting to understand her thought processes on the matter.

She looked over Vaelaeli's image, and she seemed to grow melancholy on the subject. She made a few comments on Cydi's appearance, obviously finding the angel beautiful, but I noticed that she took a few glances at herself after these comments. Honestly, I think she's uncomfortable with her own appearance. As much as she hates to admit it, I think she's seeing more of the demonic blood in herself that she thinks everyone else sees, and it's manipulating her outward demeanor towards everyone and herself.

It's a little complicated to get down what I believe her thoughts are, but I feel as though I'm starting to understand her a little better. It's both a good thing, but also really difficult to take in. I mean, I've never experienced these things. How do you console a child about a subject that you have no personal experience with? It's... it's heartbreaking.

Doesn't mean that I'm not going to try. There is no way in Hell that I'm just not going to try. If it takes everything I've got, I'm going to make things better for her. Maybe she needs to meet more kids from the facility; she could relate to them even better, perhaps even get some advice if she's willing to ask. I'll help her any way I can, even if it's from behind the scenes.

Heh. Wizard of Oz moment there.

I've gotten a little insight into what may happen when she grows as well. She's a child of the facility, so her growth spurts are going to be sudden and drastic. Things could change in the blink of an eye: appearances, attitudes, abilities... The last two probably wouldn't be as drastic, but they would probably be there.

I am really not looking forward to her turning into a teenager. She has enough mood swings and violent tendencies now, and they could be worse by that time.

All I can really do is batten down the hatches and wait out the storm. Hmm... probably isn't an analogy that's too far off, either. I'll be as ready for the storm as the next person, at least.
Ephron Falco <<

As he was signing his name onto the journal entry, the buzzer for dinner began to go off. Ephron only managed to smirk at the occurrence, "How convenient."

Nina's Journal
Entry #1

Most of the day had been spent getting groceries, buying a new dining room table, and was finished by giving Nina something new -- a journal. She scrunched her nose as she looked at it. Why did she need something so ridiculous? Couldn't anyone just open the thing up and read through her thoughts? Well... at least the little booklet was pretty. The hardcovered book was a slightly rose-tinted red, decorated with a swirly gold pattern on all the corners. There was even a nice little place in the middle of the cover where she could write her name on it... which, after some thought, she jokingly scribbled "FALCON NINE" on. With a permanent pen. Ephron seemed a little annoyed about that fact, but she liked it.

And now it seemed that the man was pushing her to write her thoughts down into the blank pages. She huffed; was there really any point? He seemed a little concerned for her as of late, and it was starting to grate on her nerves. At least he meant well, she knew this. With a sigh, she decided to follow his suggestion. There wasn't really anything else to do right now, anyway.

Unfortunately, her thoughts were mostly written in broken sentences and half-thoughts, where she ended up mainly just practicing some words with repetition. There were a few misspellings here and there, and large spaces between some of the words, but she didn't really care to fix anything. It didn't help that she preferred to doodle random scribbles here and there instead, distracting her from her train of thought.

Effy wanted me to write about my thots thoughts. Seeing the lab again was annoying. I dont want to see it again, but I know I have to. I know this, but I still dont like it. It makes me angry.

Almas was nice. He was an used to be an angel, but fell. He didnt tell us everything, he new more. We are still kids though, so he maybe didnt think wed understand. Doesnt matter, maybe I can find out later by myself. Id have to go back, though...

Rosa was there too. 2 time I saw her, wich is more than anyone else. Before that, also met twins selling stuff. Damian seemed nice, didnt talk with Gabriel much. And at the meeting, met Bleez and Kaleb too. Also nice, but Kaleb made Rosa mad. They all seem nice though.

Everyone seems nice that I met. They dont get mad very much, does that mean that Im not nice? Am I mean to Effy?

Bought a table to day because I broke the other one. Shoudnt brake anything else, try not to. Try not to get mad maybe, it made Effy mad too, and hes not mad very much.

Mad =/= Mean
~ Nina Falco

She glanced at the page when she was bored enough with it, and tossed it aside. She wasn't very happy with how the entry was turning out, with so many scattered thoughts and mistakes. Maybe she'd try again later, try to write it like the books that she enjoyed reading sometimes. If she did it like that, maybe she'd actually enjoy writing in her journal.

Nina's Journal
Entry #2

Picking up the nearly-untouched journal, Nina turned it over and over in her hands. She knew that she needed to keep up with the entries and everything, but the last time... she didn't like it. She had been bored, however, and hadn't really felt like writing. This time, however, she had just finished a few chapters of a children's series, so was at least a little more inspired to try her hand at it again. Maybe it wouldn't be as frustrating this time?

The spelling mistakes had annoyed her last time as well, and when she was so bent on using a pen to get her thoughts down, the last entry had also been rather discouraging. This time, however, she had chosen to bring a dictionary into her room! Hopefully this would make things much, much better, albeit much, much more time-consuming.

Since the last page, I met 3 new people. Theyre also really nice, its making me wonder if anyone is really mean from the labs. Tykeer and Kyler I met at the zoo, and we went to see the animals in the pen. I got to pet them! And Kylers tentacles were really nice too. They liked me! They were covered in feathers and looked like wings, I wonder if Kyler can fly with them?

I got bored with Effys talk with a person from a shop a few days ago too, so I went outside to look around. I met Ebany at the drinking fountain and we played I Spy. It was alot of fun! She was really good at it and has pretty white wings. I think she liked my hair cos she used it in the game. Alot of people like my hair I think. I dont know what to say when they say they like it but I get happy! I got it from my mommy!

I look alot like my daddy and he doesnt look like alot of other people. It makes me feel really different. Like thats what everyone sees when they see me. They dont see Nina.

I hope I can see other people. Its nice to see other lab kids, almost like brothers and sisters but not.

Effy said that I needed to go back to the labs. It makes me mad cos I was over there not very long ago. He never said I had to go back so much, and I dont like my thoughts when Im over there. He says its for class. I hope the person is like Almas. He was nice and wasnt a tech. Im still scared though.
~ Nina Falco

She leaned back to look at the page. Hmm... well, at least it was better, in her opinion. She wished she had more to write, but it was definitely a lot better. Smiling, she closed the book and put everything in a neat little stack on a table in her room; she wasn't about to put the dictionary back where she found it!

Ephron's Journal
Entry #4

It was a rather slow day at home. There wasn't much to be had, seeing as they made this a "relaxation" day, one where they didn't get up early and trek around the town. Not that he had much money to get anything that was needed, and most of the other areas were visited just the other day. Ephron had to get more creative, or he was going to drive himself batty! Taking up his pen, he began scribbling down thoughts in his journal once more. Who knows? Maybe it would help direct his actions for later use, while simultaneously passing the time.

These past few weeks have actually been surprisingly fun. This isn't to say that it wasn't very entertaining before, but I've noticed that Nina's been much more chipper than usual. She's gotten interested in learning about anything that is within her grasp, and even things that aren't. Her attitude may also be attributed to the fact that she's been running into a lot of other children from the facility as of late, and all of them were remarkably kind.

I'm sorry, that's not really a very fair thing to say. When people get used to thinking of demons and sins and all that, they begin to think that there can be nothing good about that facet of a being's personality. It makes a person fully-rounded, I've noticed, but it doesn't usually overcome the person completely. This is made painstakingly obvious in every kid I've run across. I just made the observation about Nina's most recent acquaintances as their virtues tend toward being more fully dominant. Maybe it's been good for her?

Nina did run off in her last encounter, however, and that worries me a little. She's getting much bolder, and she doesn't ask about things like that much anymore: permission, rules, and the like. I dunno, maybe that's actually a good thing and I'm just being too protective of her. After all, she's listening to what she wants to do more, right? I can't help but think that that could turn out hazardous, though...

She did get bored in that instance, now that I think about it, so maybe I'm reading too far into it? I was speaking to a shop clerk about running a business and what it takes to run one successfully, and that can't be too interesting to a child. At least I was able to keep an eye on her the whole time.

Speaking of which, money's been getting rather tight lately. I'm used to "running on empty" like this, but not when I'm taking care of a kid to boot. Funds run out faster, especially when said kid's tantrums and bouts of "fun" drain my wallet even faster. I know, this is something that I should have seen coming, but for some crazy reason, I thought the money I had saved would stretch farther than this. As much as it will only put further strain on my relationship with Nina, I'm going to have to find work somewhere. It shouldn't be too difficult -- I'm already adept at being a salesman and appraiser, maybe I can get work in a pawn shop or a jewelers. But that just means less time to spend with Nina in her short childhood.

Speaking of which, I still need to talk with my father about all this. I have no idea how that's going to go, considering I haven't been in much contact with him for... how many months has it been now? I don't even know if he's been okay, and he doesn't know anything about Nina. I've been so caught up in getting her settled into living comfortably, and the decision to try to do any of this was almost spur-of-the-moment anyway, there has been no time for me to actually let him know what's been going on in my life. Ohh, I hope he takes it well...
Ephron Falco <<

He almost shuddered to think about it, despite his best feelings about the man. He was his father, of course he'd be accepting of anything that happened, right? But people were so superstitious nowadays, and it wasn't as if he had ever really confronted him about his thoughts on angels and demons. Was he just making a disastrous mistake here?

His stomach twisted uncomfortably at the thought, and he put his journal down. That was enough for today.
