~Welcoming Trouble to Your Door~ Another late night at the bookstore, how unfortunately typical. Jadyn was almost beginning to get bored of her nice, safe, routine life. If her friend Tish had known this, she'd be laughing her head off at the dark elf right now. Jadyn, sick of her ordinary life? Yearning for something different? That was completely atypical for her, she might as well have been replaced by pod people! A strange scratching sound at the door caught the dark elf's attention, and she went to the front of the bookstore, but not before donning a pair of shades. It was daylight outside, and much too rough on her light-sensitive eyes. Opening the door, she peered around, but didn't see anyone right away. Then she had the oh-so-brilliant idea of looking down, and there, at not even knee-height, was a little girl with pink hair, pink eyes........ and a feathered tail? The little one beamed up at her and bounced on the balls of her feet, twirling around in place and handing a scruffy piece of paper to the dark elf. "Are. . . are you lost, kiddo?" Jadyn asked hesitantly, and the little girl shook her head. "Nu-uh! This is my home now! Can I come in?" Thoroughly confused, Jadyn looked around and saw a. . . rather unmemorable person stepping out of a car near the street, in his hand he held a pen, and was obviously the source of the official-looking document that the toddler held. Jadyn blinked, completely confused, and placed a hand on the child's head to push her away from the door that she was trying to squeeze through already. "Wait, um.... sir, is this your daughter?" The man smiles, a slightly eerie smile to Jadyn's mind, and shook his head. "No. She's yours, as soon as you sign that paperwork." Paperwork? Oh, right, the crumpled paper the little girl shoved at her. Jadyn took it and peered at it, wrinkling her nose. Mr. Vampy? Laboratory? What the - ? A tugging at her skirt forced her to look down into wide, sad pink eyes. "D-don't you want me? I'll be good, I p'omise!" Twitching a little, sighing, and absolutely DEAD CERTAIN that she would regret this later, Jadyn signed her name to the contract and passed it to the man, before taking the little one by the hand and leading her inside. "Well, kiddo, welcome home I guess. Do you have a name? I'm Jadyn." The little one wrinkled her nose, and then smiled innocently. "I'm Phoebe! Phoebe and J-Mama!" Her smile turned devious as she looked around at all of the things in the book shop, things to investigate, to play with, ways to help her new J-Mama, and Jadyn's heart dropped into her stomach. What had she invited into her home?

~So THAT'S what books are for!~ "Here, Phoebe, look at this with me," Jadyn prompted, trying to get her hyperactive charge to sit still long enough to actually learn something for once. In response, Phoebe merely blew a raspberry and continued her impromptu dance around the room. "Phoebe, come here," the dark elf said again, not loudly but insistently all the same. The pigtailed toddler pouted but didn't resist any more, and reluctantly came over to her mother, plopping herself down and scowling up at Jadyn. "What d'you want?" She asked, then her eyes fell on the book in her J-Mama's hands - it had pretty pictures in it! Pretty, pretty pictures! "Ooooh, oooooh, what's this, J-Mama? What's this?" Jadyn smiled and patted Phoebe on the head lightly. "This, kiddo, is an alphabet and numbers book. You need to start learning how to read if you're going to grow up in a bookstore, after all!" "Read?" Phoebe echoed, wrinkling her nose. "I'd rather learn dancing!" Jadyn rolled her eyes. "I know you'd rather learn to dance, but until we can figure out a way to get you in toeshoes without you ripping them, you're just going to have to be satisfied by learning this. Now, see here? This letter is A, and this one is B. . ." The lesson continued on for a while, with Phoebe getting more and more bored until Jadyn started showing her the fun things about letters and numbers - how they made words and helped Jadyn know how many toys she'd gotten for Phoebe in the last trip to the toy store. Phoebe proved to be a quick study once her attention was caught, and it was only a few hours later that the little spawn spelled her first and favorite word: "P-I-N-K!"

~Thoughts of a Mother~ Jadyn tucked soft pink blankets around Phoebe's sleeping form, and stifled a small smile as the little spawn's tail swished around and the toddler grabbed at the blankets, mumbling something unintentional under her breath as she dreamed, dead to the world around her. The dark elf watched her adopted daughter for a moment before exiting the room, turning off the light as she went. Once she'd reached her own room, she sat down at her desk and pulled out a journal, and a quill to write with - she preferred this old fashioned method of writing to any modern counterpart. Tucking a loose strand of white hair behind one dark pointed ear, Jadyn dipped her quill into an inkwell and began to write. Jadyn I'm not sure how long it's been since I was given charge of Phoebe - a queer child who is apparently the child of both an angel and a demon. Thus far she seems to have shown more of her demonic aspects: her pride in herself is boundless, and has gotten her into more trouble than I can properly count. Still, every now and then she becomes so sweet and kind that it's hard to believe it's the same little girl that she had been just five minutes before. I never thought I would be a parent, let alone to such a difficult child as Phoebe, but I'd like to think I'm doing relatively well. It's not my greatest skill in life, I'm not drawn to children the way some of my friends are - in fact I'm considered to be pretty inept with them. Regardless, I'm doing my best and Phoebe doesn't seem to be suffering. I do care for her, a great deal. I just don't know what to do with her half of the time. But. . . as long as she's happy, and healthy, then that's really all that matters.

sevenofsevenmule It would be on a Saturday that you open your mail box (if you have one) and notice there is a rather thick envelope stuffed in there. There is no postage stamp and a very vague return address. But you recognize the font and the company's name. 'Seven of Seven Inc' scrawled in majestic font across the upper left hand corner. As you open it, you may strangely find yourself drawn to the letter, there is a mass of notes inside. They read as follows:Letter Congratulations! You have managed to succeed in raising your child. (IE: Not killing him or her or getting killed yourself. Haha we kid of course.) We would like an update from you on the following: Guardians Name: Child's Name: Sin: Virtue: Gender: Current Attitude: Likes: Dislikes: Any abnormal growths: (if any, example: Feathers molting, horns growing larger, scars ) Current hair style: Current clothing preferences: Dominant celestial trait: (The sin or virtue) Please summarize in your own words how difficult or easy it was taking care of your child. Did you manage to care for them in a kindly fashion? Or were you forced to discipline them? As well do not be alarmed if you suddenly find your child achieving a massive growth spurt in the next little while. We are finding that the children from our facility have strange growing patterns and are rather unpredictable. Although please let us know if anything unexpected occurs. Sincerely the technicians from Seven of Seven Inc. Ps. Please just leave your letter back in your mail box one you have completed it our courier will pick it up. Thank you. You would notice the letter seems overly friendly...strange since the scientist were so ...cold before.
(Just take the from Guardians name to Dominant Celestial trait and pm it to the mule, the summarization doesn't have to be long just have fun with it.)

Jadyn's Response Guardians Name: Jadyn Child's Name: Phoebe Sin: Pride Virtue: Kindness Gender: Female Current Attitude: Showoff-y and hyperactive, with a complete disregard for any and all rues (including those designed for her own safety) Likes: Ballet (a LOT, so much so that she wants to be a ballerina), the color pink, climbing things, puppies and dragons Dislikes: Crayons, markers, broken books Any abnormal growths: The claws on her feet have grown longer and sharper, to the point of being dangerous when she has temper tantrums and decides to kick something. Her tail's also gotten longer and more feathered and is a great counterbalance to help Phoebe maintain her balance, even when she spins around like a top. This might not fall under growths, but Phoebe's been having a little trouble with her right eye lately, she's been rubbing it a lot and it seems, well, pinker than usual. Maybe a case of pinkeye? Somehow I don't think so Current hair style: Phoebe still likes to wear her hair in pigtails, but she's stopped wearing them on top of her head and now insists that the be formed under her ears, or low pigtails as they're called. Her hair's a bit longer than before, too, and she's been eying some of the side french-braid's she's seen on other people. Current clothing preferences: Phoebe's gone into an odd phase of dress lately. She can't take ballet since she is incapable of wearing shoes, but nevertheless she dresses almost solely in leotards with small skirts - specially modified for her tail - and arm and leg warmers, of all things! Dominant celestial trait: Pride, though Kindness is starting to show up a bit more, now and then. Summary: Phoebe's been . . . well, a handful isn't the best word. More like a little terror in two legs. But it hasn't been so bad, really. She can be very sweet when she isn't singing her own praises. Disciplining this child just hasn't worked, she doesn't listen to a thing I say; I don't know if it's that I'm a bad parent or if it's just that her pride won't let her admit that she's wrong, even if she's been punished. Overall, it's been hard, but worth it, I think.

~They Weren't Kidding About Massive Growth Spurts~ Jadyn's ears twitched as a sound woke her up out of a sound sleep. At first, she thought it might have been her youngest, Kupo, waking up crying at odd hours as he was wont to do. The urgent whisper of "J-Mama, J-Mama, wake up!" told her otherwise almost immediately, and with a sigh the dark elf, sat up,stretched and yawned, before looking over to see her daughter looking much taller than she'd seen her before putting her to bed last night, clutching her blankets about her like some sort of robe. Jadyn blinked. "Phee?" She asked after a moment, and the pink haired blanket nodded, wide eyes looking - for one of the few times that Jadyn could remember - rather frightened and confused. IT was probably a trick of the light, but the dark elf could have sworn that something looked odd about her daughter's right eye,but surely that was just in her imagination. There was nothing wrong with the child of pride and kindness, right? "Phoebe, what is it?" She asked again when the bundle of blanket didn't respond right away. "J-mama... none of my clothes fit," Phoebe said, scuffing a toe along the floor - and leaving a scratch on the wood. When had her toenails gotten that long? They looked more like claws. . . Jadyn looked Phoebe over and could immediately figure out the reason for the blanket-robe. Smiling slightly, she took Phoebe's free hand and pulled the much-bigger than before Spawn to her in a hug. "Don't worry, kiddo - this is normal for you. I think I have some old clothes from when I was a kid stored away that we can fit you in until we can go shopping, alright?" She said, trying to reassure the pink-haired child. Phoebe nodded, and after a moment grinned brightly at Jadyn. "So... this means I get new pretty clothes? And - and I can finally pick them out myself, right?"Jadyn rolled her eyes and mussed Phoebe's hair a little. "Alright, sure - just don't go overboard, and I get the final veto on anything you pick. Deal?" "Deal!"

~Jadyn Makes a Decision~ Phoebe sat on the floor in the living room of the bookstore - the upstairs one - and leaned back against her beanbag chair as she flipped idly through the pages of a book. It had been a gift from her J-Mama a few days ago, and though she loved it to pieces, she was growing increasingly frustrated with it - and with herself. As hard as she tried to focus on it, her left eye picked up the images just fine, but her right eye kept going into this weird blur that was almost tinted pink! How could she read when half of her vision was obscured by pink fuzz?!? Growling to herself, she jumped to her feet and threw the book across the room, where it landed with a 'flump' into another beanbag chair. "I hate this!" The spawn exclaimed, rubbing at her eye to try and clear it, and only succeeding in irritating it and making it water. "I hate this I hate this I hate this! Stupid book, stupid fuzz, stupid eye!""Phee?" A soft, worried voice interrupted her tirade, and the pigtailed child turned mid eye-rub to see her mother standing in the doorway with her little brother in her arms, watching her with open concern in her golden eyes. How could she not have heard her?!? Phoebe cursed herself inwardly - not out loud, never, J-Mama would have her head if she ever cursed,, let alone in front of her - as she realized that she'd been so caught up in her tantrum that she hadn't even heard the dark elf come in. "Phee?" Jadyn asked again, and this time Phoebe's ears twitched as she tried to pay attention to what her mother was saying. "Phoebe, tell me the truth, kiddo - is your eye bothering you again?"Phoebe blushed and looked away, not wanting to admit that she was having any sort of a problem. Instead, she galloped over and took the infant from Jadyn'sarms, patting his white hair and rocking him. "Did I wake you up from you nap, Kupo? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," she said, cooking over the baby and patting the red pom-pom on his head. Another repetition of her name, however, and in a no-nonsense tone of voice at that, forced her to focus again on her mother. Sighing, she nodded. "Yes, J-Mama... it... it's gone all funny," she said, the words feeling like molten lead in her mouth as she admitted her fault. Instead of getting angry, or doing anything that would injure Phoebe's pride, Jadyn just knelt down next to her nine-year-old and wrapped an arm around her, hugging both her and Kupo in a one-armed embrace, while Kupo grabbed one of Phoebe's pigtails and started to gnaw on it. "Well then, Phee - I think it's time we get you to an eye doctor. I'll make an appointment for as soon as possible, and we'll see what can be done."That was all?!? Really? Phoebe had thought this would have been more humiliating, embarrassing even. Instead, she just felt. . . loved. Maybe it was because Jadyn didn't really hug her, so this embrace was something to be treasured. Maybe it was because her eye might get better. Or maybe. . . Maybe it was just because she finally felt like J-Mama was really her Mama.

This wasn't going to be pleasant, Jadyn mused as she pulled out her diary, ready to start another entry into it. They had gone to a local eye doctor the other day, who was perplexed about what was going on with Phoebe, but agreed that with as much as it was irritating her, it would be best to keep it covered for a while. Jadyn looked across the living room to see Phoebe playing with Kupo, a medical patch across her right eye, as she tickled the furry feet of her teleporting little brother. In the corner, an annoyed (but vaguely amused) Kendra lounged in a chair, her split tails waving behind her as she filed her nails. Jadyn sighed and adjusted her glasses, before taking out a quill and starting to write. Jadyn's Diary So. Here we are again. Last time I'd written in this thing, I'd just gotten Phoebe, who was the craziest toddler I could ever have been stuck with. Now she's grown to a child (and boy, the company that dropped her off with me weren't kidding when they said she'd grow fast!), and isn't half as annoying as before. I attribute this this to the arrival of her little brother, Kupo. He came from the dratted Azoulais who left my friend Tish with so many kids, but I couldn't bear to send him back. Especially since he's done such wonders for Phoebe - all of a sudden she'd developing such a - well, such a kind streak. Now there's a thid kid living under my roof, only she's not such a kid. Phee and her don't get along in the least; I've been working on it but I have little hope. Phoebe seems to think that Kendra's out to humiliate her, and thus wants nothing to do with her. Instead she devotes all her time to dancing and to Kupo. Dancing is still her main passion, though she's gotten an interest in beadwork going - plus, she's finally starting to appreciate the value of books and what they have within them. There's also been another, more worrying development. Her right eye... it's not working very well, and it just keeps getting pinker. The eye doctor doesn't know what to do to help her, but I'm afraid of taking her to the labs she came from - something about that place just. . . well, it seems 'off' somehow. Anyway, she's growing up to be a beautiful girl, and her attitude's been getting better. I'd attribute it to my superior parenting skills, but seeing as I have none, I suppose it's just her virtuous side taking over. . . A shriek of giggled from Kupo and a familiar 'poof' sound forced Jadyn to close her diary, and she rubbed at the bridge of her nose, glancing over at Phoebe. "Went and vanished on us again, did he?" She asked with an amused tone, and was rewarded by Phoebe nodding and jumping to her feet - only to wobble unsteadily and nearly fall over. "I'll go find him~!" the spawn declared, rushing off into the bowels of the bookstore before her mother could hope to call her back.
