Dan knew she was exceptionally lucky for a teenage girl. In fact, no teenage girl that she knew of (and she knew many people) had ever woken up one day and found out they were a super, magical senshi warrior by the end of it. Maybe they did. It was supposed to be a secret, after all; Miss Ophelia had made sure to firmly drill it into her head that this senshi business? Was a total secret. After her encounter with the blue-haired girl (the Negaverse, Ophelia said), Dan ran straight home and made sure to call Amanda’s house and make sure the girl was all right. She had been, thank goodness, though she was dazed and shaken up. A mugger, she’d told her parents, and Dana guiltily agreed with the story, apologizing once more for running away from the girl.
She didn’t like lying, but what choice did she have?
Still, no matter how special she was, how important, Dana Mczeal found she was still being forced to suffer through speech class. In fact, she was being forced to suffer through all her classes, but that didn’t really matter much to her. Classes were classes, and they were boring! Still, the teachers and her fellow classmates probably appreciated the eerie quiet that surrounded the normally mouthy girl, and Dana found herself daydreaming through most of school. To think! School girl by day, Sailor Dorado by night. It was a dream come true. She hadn’t transformed since that night, though had immediately demanded that her mother sign her up for karate classes with Matthew. Miss Ophelia said she’d need to fight, and what better way to learn than that?!
Her hands were pressed against her cheeks even as she stared out the window, feet mindlessly kicking. So, there was the Negaverse... She was supposed to stay away from them, they were dangerous. And then... what else. Youma? The monsters in the dark that everyone had been talking about. As far as she knew, no one had really seen one, they were just rumors. But Dan believed it. After all, she had just turned into a magical girl over night! Anything was possible.
“Ms. McZeal?”
She started for a moment, looking around before she realized the kids around her were all beginning to pack their things up. It was time to go, already? Not about to waste her time sitting in this place all day, Dana hastily leapt out of her chair and grabbed her bag.
The pen that Ophelia had gave her, unbeknownst to her, tumbled from one of the open pouches and clattered to the floor, but she was already out the door and celebrating her new freedom. It felt as though the entire city now lay at her fingertips, hapless and in need of a defender. A defender like her. A giddiness swelled in her chest until it was nearly overwhelming, and she practically skipped her way out of the school. It wouldn’t be till later that night that she’d realize it was gone. That was when the panic would begin.

“MATTHEW!” The girl roared from the top of the stairs, her knuckles white with anxiety more than they were with rage. “Matthew McZeal, were you in my room?!”
It. Was. GONE. Her pen, her henshin pen, the one that Miss Ophelia had gave her. Without it, she couldn’t transform into Sailor Dorado, and that meant she was utterly and entirely useless. Her room had been torn into a flurry of papers and scattered clothes while she’d frantically looked for the priceless gift, but to no avail. That left only her little brother as the culprit. He had to have had it, had to have stolen it!
“Nu-uh!” Her eight-year-old kid brother peeked his head around the corner to peer up at his sister, even having the audacity to stick his tongue out. “But be quiet, cuz me ‘n dad are—hey!” The girl had bounded down the stairs to practically pounce on him in mid-sentence, and a very brief, violent wrestling match would take place before she’d successfully sat on him.
“Where. Is. My. Pen.”” Dana growled.
Unfortunately, this little threatening did not go over nearly as well as it seemed to in the movies and the like, and the wrath of both her mother and father fell down on her head in the form of being grounded for a day. She was disgracefully sent to her room while Matthew leered like only an annoying little brother could.
Dana was ashamed that she spent most of that night sobbing into her pillow. This was possibly the worst thing that had happened in her entire life. She’d been given that pen because it was her job to protect people! And be important! Why, when Miss Ophelia found out, she’d probably take away her senshi powers and give them to someone more responsible! The thought was devastating.
At some point, her mother came in, gently seating herself on the bed and stroking at Dana’s hair. Despite the fact that she was Not-A-Little-Girl-Anymore, the teen would curl up beside her with a sniffle.
“What’s going on, Dana-Boo?” Abigail McZeal knew it wasn’t normal for her daughter to be in such a state over a grounding.
“Lost somethin’ important.” Dana would croak after a moment of silence, rubbing at her red eyes. “I gotta find it, Mom, it’s really really important.”
“Tell you what, kiddo,” Her mother started to rock with her a little. “It’s getting late now, and you’re tired and upset. So let’s start out fresh tomorrow. We’ll look for it in the morning, and all day after school, if we have to. Okay? What’d you lose?”
The girl bit her lip, knowing exactly what her mother would say. “A pen.”
“Is that all? Oh, honey, we can buy you a new pen if we can’t find this one, all right? It’ll be okay.” With that, she kissed Dana on the forehead and stood up. “Now get ready for bed, okay? You’ve got another bright and early morning tomorrow.”
Dana just nodded mutely and went to go wash her face. No matter what her mother said, it wasn’t going to be okay. She had to find that pen.

Sneaking out of the house was almost routine by now, and the young woman carefully shifted her weight to the balls of her feet to better help her creep across the kitchen. There were squeaky floorboards abound, though she'd mostly pegged down where they all were. Where other students sneaking out at night were probably up to no good, Danny believed her cause to be just and righteous. A superhero had to train, after all!
And, much as it galled her to admit it, Sailor Dorado needed to be much stronger.
Slipping out the front door like a shadow, she carefully locked it behind her and dashed through the suburbs of her neighborhood, seeking a quiet space in the greenbelt out back. Dropping her backpack, she rummaged around until her hand closed around the object she was looking for. The girl turned around with dramatic flourish, holding the pen up high above her head. This was, after all, one of her favorite parts.
"Dorado Power Make-up!"
Light bloomed all around her, and she relished the sensation of the change, spinning and twirling even as her sailor scout outfit appeared as if by--well, magic! Once the transformation was complete, she struck a pose, beaming broadly in the darkness. "Have no fear, Sailor Dorado is here!"
Yeah. That sounded good. Appropriately righteous and hero-like, in fact! But Dorado hadn't come here just to play. She needed to train--and that meant figuring out what attacks she could use so that she would be able to help out more in battle! While her one ability was useful, it didn't exactly call lightning down on her foes or smash them with a big ball of fire. Dorado needed something with a little more kick to it!
Taking a deep breath, the girl shifted in her boots ever so slightly before calling out, "Big Aqua Blast!" She thrust her hands out in front of her, eyes narrowed with determination.
Nothing happened.
Her stance wilted slightly, but she wasn't disappointed for long. Clearly that just hadn't been the right phrase! She thought hard for a moment, then struck another pose and shouted, "Aquaticus Maximus Waterdigimus!"
That should have had water rushing out like a geyser! But sadly... nothing happened. In fact, no matter what pose she struck or what fancy name she yelled, nothing happened. The only thing she could do was make herself as quick as a fish in water with her Dorado Aquarium Agility move, and Dorado screeched with frustration even as she yanked at her hair.
Why couldn't she do it?! She'd seen other senshi use powerful moves on the news before! A thought struck her suddenly, her eyes growing wide with horror.
She was doing something wrong. Ohh, where was Miss Kitty to help her out when she needed her?! In that instant, her phone alarm went off from inside of her bag, cheerfully reminding her she needed to get home and get some sleep unless she wanted to be too tired to get up the next day.
Feeling utterly disappointed in herself, the girl reluctantly powered down and gathered up her things. She'd have to find herself a teacher or something--someone who could help her figure out what she needed to do to get stronger!
It never once occurred to her that maybe she wasn't supposed to be the one dealing out damage to her opponents.

Abigail knew her daughter was up to something when Dana suddenly took a keen interest in watching the local news. Any of her gentle attempts to pry into her daughter's business had her shutting down immediately, looking suspicious and sneaky all at once. Dana had always been a willful child, and frankly, Abigail was concerned that this terrorist nonsense they kept showing on the news was beginning to influence her. These suspicions were only confirmed when over breakfast one morning, Dana nearly choked on her cereal when they showed one of those senshi characters wreaking hell on the streets!
Dana was, for the moment,entirely unaware of her mother's scrutiny, still gripping her cereal spoon as she stared at the television, straining to hear every word. Another senshi! Near here! She recognized those stores! Why, she had to try and find her immediately! One superhero was cool, but a TEAM of superheroes was even better! And, judging from what little footage they could see, it looked as though this girl could really pack a punch!
Excellent. A punch was exactly what she needed. If this girl was a more experienced senshi, she could teach her everything she knew! That way Dorado would be more than ready the next time a Nega-creep showed up! Even as her mind whirled with the possibilities, Danny realized her mother was starting to frown.
Shoot.
Hastily, she dug into her cereal again as though nothing was wrong, but she could feel the weight of her mother's eyes resting on her shoulders.
"Dana," Her mother started, and the girl grudgingly looked up with a wince.
"Mom," She repeatedly flatly, then immediately swallowed hard when her mother raised a single eyebrow. "Uh. Yes?" She tried again, and felt relief flood through her when her mother's features smoothed out.
"Dana, is everything alright at school? You just seem so tired lately... and I know you've been interested in all of--this." She waved a hand at the TV screen, shaking her head.
Oh, geez. Dan knew she had to think fast, less her mother suspect she was involved in all of those shenanigans. Which, of course, she was. "Well yeah, Mom, who wouldn't be? I mean, it's important! I've been..." Aha, lightbulb! "...wanting to start a self-defense club at school, in case any kids run into these weirdos on the way home!"
She held her breath with anticipation, feeling like she was dripping sweat as she watched her mom consider her words.
"Do you even know self-defense?" Her mother asked flatly after a moment. Dana gave a guilty start and then dropped her gaze to the table. "Well..." Her mom sighed after a moment. "What if I got you enrolled in some classes? Would that make you feel better?"
Danny just stared for a moment. Classes? To teach her how to fight? "Heck YES!" She shouted, trying to leap from her seat. She succeeded in banging her knees on the table and flipping her bowl of cereal right onto the floor. Sucking in a sharp breath between her teeth,she vaulted for the kitchen, scrambling for paper towels so she could clean up the mess. "Sorry!"
Much to her relief, her mom just shook her head with a half-smile. "Classes it is." And hopefully that would be enough to keep her headstrong daughter out of trouble...
