Elke lay in her bed, face down buried under the covers, in warm, comforting darkness. She had a heavy flashlight near one hand, an iPhone in the other; the flashlight was for beating up anyone who tried to get into her room, the iPhone in case she needed to call for help. Any other time, she might have gone down to Avery's room and asked to stay the night; she might have traversed the dark stairs to the third floor and hidden under Giselle's desk. But the teachers had stepped up rounds at night. They walked the halls nearly omnipresently, stopping anyone they saw even if the kid was only going to do laundry. It didn't matter.
Bad things still happened at Barren Pines. All the patrolling wouldn't stop the kids dying from bacterial meningitis. How would you catch people who had that, anyway, from wandering the halls? Wasn't the onset of bacterial meningitis very fast and swift and stuff?
Well, she wasn't going to risk it. She had a big flashlight and a mode of communication. All entrances to her room were locked. The closet had a box full of history books in front of it. Nothing could possibly get into Elke's room and do her harm. Nothing.
Some people might construe that as a challenge, but Elke didn't think of that when she whispered it to herself. "Nothing can get in," she said to the ether, "Nothin' without my permission."
That hadn't helped the dead students. Ignacio Araya... she hadn't known him, but he was dead now, so she regretted it as much as Elke ever regretted anything. Abeline Froust had been a little mean and standoffish, but she was dead too. A lost opportunity - a friend she hadn't ever really gotten to know. That was sad. Elke had cried at the memorials of those two students, more for chances she'd never gotten to take on befriending them.
Then, all in one day, Tara - the girl who had helped her and Giselle find out if it was really blood on those sheets. Esen and Elle, too, all members of Science Club. In fact, it was like the entire club had died or been transferred out, in the case of Allie Silverwood, who had only just transferred in. And Viridiana, and now Benson Beldon, whom everyone knew, and Grayson, who had been dating Benson.
Everyone was dying. Giselle had said that no one else was going to die, but people just kept dropping dead anyway. Didn't they know it was rude to make people into liars?
It wasn't their fault, Elke thought. "It wasn't their fault," she said aloud, but she was scared and there had been monsters outside and inside a place that had always, always felt safe. For a girl who'd never been truly frightened, never been hungry, never had to worry about anything more than passing her tests, it was a big change. A frightening change.
Still, it was her Responsibility to cheer everyone on. To cheer them up. No one could be sad or scared on her watch, which meant Elke had to look un-sad. Un-scared. She had to be Strong.
So that's what she'd do. Just like when she helped Serenade. Just make herself available, make herself seen and present and there. That's what she would do.
It made sense.
