Elke finished her homework. She put away her pencils. She fussed with her curtains. Then she got up, changed out of her uniform and into a cute dress, and headed out into the hallway. She locked the door behind her, put her keys in her matching purse, and looked around. Nobody was out, she supposed; it was free time, the time between dinner and bed, and she had to go to her tutoring in Italian. She liked to leave early enough that if some Crisis came up she could call ahead, cancel and head back, all without incurring the wrath of the teacher.

Today this was a good thing, because as she was skipping (yes, skipping) down one of the hallways on the first floor, she spotted a kitty. Not just any kitty, a gray tabby kitty with a funny spiked collar and a star on its forehead. She knew that kitties roamed campus sometimes but this one was so pretty and it just made her day so she practically ran up behind the kitty to scoop it into her arms.

"Pretty kitty," she crooned happily, scratching the kitty behind the ears. "Who do you belong to, pretty kitty?~" Of course the kitty wouldn't answer, Elke knew kitties couldn't talk, so instead she started walking towards her destination. Maybe she'd find the owner of the kitty somewhere on the way?

He may or may not have been stalking Barren Pines as of late in search for the two women in the Negaverse that he gave a damn about. After wasting time wandering around, lost, on one of the floors, however, his patience was wearing thin. To hell with surprise visits; this entire place was making his fur stand on end, and Grendel moodily began to search for a proper exit.

That was before an unexpected coo made him pause, slitted eyes pausing to peer up at the gushing girl. Before he even had time to react, he was scooped up into her arms with a grunt, too bewildered as to decide right away whether he should protest or simply lounge there like a perfectly willing kitty-corpse.

The scratches helped seal the deal, and a purr was soon rumbling blissfully through the cat's chest. He had no idea where this girl was headed, keeping one eye cracked open for any sign of someone he recognized. He belonged to no one... Or so he liked to tell himself.

In a momentary pause in the petting, she shifted around the collar the cat wore. Nothing - no details, no tag. Maybe she should bring the kitty to Sue? He would know what to do with a kitty, that was sort of his thing. But Sue didn't like her. Elke pouted, but there was no changing Sue and there was a mass of purring kitty in her arms and she was quite happy to keep scratching him behind the ears.

"I guess you can hang out with me until it's time for class," she decided, since the kitty seemed disinclined to move. "You are such a pretty kitty, aren't you?"

The way to the Foreign Languages building was unusually deserted. Maybe that was a good thing, since it meant she could keep the kitty for a while! Yes. That was a good thing.

Class time, mm? Grendel had honestly never been around school too often when it was in session--not on the inside, anyway. The purr would deepen at what he took to be a rhetorical question, always amused with how it was always the girls who seemed to be kind. Well, no matter; he certainly didn't mind being fussed over.

Shifting in her arms a little, the cat yawned lazily before he arched his head over her shoulder, peering back at the way they'd came in order to better memorize it. "Mrr?" He muttered aloud to himself before he'd settle back in Elke's arms.

No use fretting over getting lost again now, he supposed.

She did love this kitty, Elke decided; normally kitties were Exclusive Property of Sue, but this one kitty... She looked around. Left. Right. Behind them, just in case. Nope! No purple-haired Sue hanging around, waiting to shriek at her all good god stop molesting the kitty. Elke didn't even remember what she had done to make Sue mad! Anyway, if he wasn't around, she could play with the kitty for a while.

Elke entered the building, still petting the kitty, and settled in a hallway. Sometimes teachers came along this hall, going somewhere else; sometimes teachers didn't. She didn't really fuss over it, because there was no point and Elke knew enough of her classmates that she almost never had to talk to a teacher about anything.

"Wish I had a kitty like you," said Elke to the cat, still patting him, "Don't know what I'd name him, though. Prince Chochi the Kingslayer, maybe. But you don't look much like a Chochi, you know..."

...Prince what?

Grendel had stopped his musings and observations long enough to at least pay attention to that much, nose wrinkling unconsciously even as he snorted. It were times like these that made him consider that dog tags might not be such a bad idea after all. Or something that had his name on at least. He was sure he'd never hear the end of it, but, details.

Purring still, the cat nestled close to the girl, still keeping his eyes peeled. Nothing unusual so far--and no one he recognized either. That was until a familiar voice called out and made all the fur on his back bristle--

"--Is that a cat? Andrew Collins had been on the hunt for some dodge balls when he noticed the grey tabby lounging away in the kid's arms. Grendel, that lazy little b*****d, what the hell was he doing? "Animals aren't supposed to be inside, you know." He mused, stepping closer even as he took in the now-agitated animal with narrowed eyes. He'd get his later, that was for sure...

"Hey," protested Elke at the cat's snort, "I never said it was your name, just that I thought it would be a totally cute kitty name!" If the kitty didn't like that name, she'd think of another one. Hmmm... "You don't look like a Beowulf," she decided. Breton literature was probably not the right place to be looking. Maybe a name from Roman history? He looked like a very regal kitty...

"Is that a cat?"

Her head jerked up from where she was studying the collar as if hoping for a sign from Above that she was heading in the proper direction for the kitty's name, and for a moment she stopped petting. Then she recognized the teacher and cautiously went back to giving the kitty ear-scratches. "H-hi, Mr. Collins," said Elke, who lived in a healthy, terrified fear of the gym teacher. It was very, very healthy and terrified fear. "I know, but he was already in the dorms, and he looked so lonely and I couldn't leave him there all lost, what if something got him? The woods are like, right there you know, like, right outside the gates and kitties are very good climbers, you know." Her eyes were impossibly wide and green as she finished her explanation and tried to calm down the kitty.

Her tone took on a pleading note. "Please can he stay with me for a while, Mr. Collins, I just want to find his owner so he doesn't get eaten. Kitties shouldn't get eaten, they're cute."

Elke had a unique worldview.

The cat had his teeth secretly bared at the sight of the gym teacher, and, unknown to Elke, was telling him to go the hell away or else. Better yet, yes, let the girl simper at him, see if he cracked for her like he did most of them, the sick b*****d. He'd choose being coddled and spoiled any day over being stuck with Obsidian, and his tail twitched irritably even as he pressed himself closer to the girl.

A brow arched as the babbled explanation was offered, and he had to admit that the bulging eyes were at least a little unnerving. "Already in the dorms, huh?" He mused, wondering how the hell Grendel had managed that all on his own. "If he gets eaten, that's called Darwinisim. Survival of the fittest."

Still, he frowned. "I know who the hell he belongs to... but, you can hold him till class." The man crossed his arms, wondering if Ursula knew about her less-than-cooperative pet running amuck in the hallways. "What class do you have next?"

B-but just letting the kitty get eaten wouldn't just be Darwinism, it'd also be called neglectful kittyslaughter and that would be an absolutely terrible thing to do! Elke did not do terrible things, nor did she condone them. Well, if she knew there were terrible, she wouldn't let them go on in her sights. Outside of them, she couldn't really stop it (which made her mad).

"Oh, you do? Thank you!" Elke seemed happy at this again, and if she inhabited certain video games she might have been exuding sparkles or doing a little dance of Victory. "Um... Italian, sir?" It was extracurricular, since she was far ahead of the regular Italian class already. "It's not for a little while, though, I left early just in case."

Which was good, because she'd found a kitty.

Now he was suspicious. Obsidian? Letting him stay with an oblivious school Girl? Tail flicking with agitation, the cat resisted the urge to flex his claws, instead only eying the man beadily as though to better pick out just what the other was playing at. No harm in staying quiet and listening for now though--he could make a mad dash for it if the man suddenly tried to grab at him or something.

"Italian." Obsidian mused, wondering who the hell would take that up for kicks. "You like it? Being forced to take it? Going to move to Italy? What?" Half curious, half sarcastic. "Probably deserves to be eaten, if he's running around outside." A brow was arched at the cat.

He'd be good. For now.

"It's okay, kitty," said Elke to her armful of cat. She hadn't noticed the pretty star mark too well before, but now she noted that it was really, really sharp-edged. How weird!

Whatever. It was probably part of Kitty's species or something. She returned her attention to Mr. Collins, saying, "I like Italian, I want to be a photojournalist, traveling is good for photojournalism, I already speak French and German and English really fluently and I'm taking the fluency test for Italian and Spanish in a week and then I'm going to learn Mandarin Chinese and Korean, maybe, maybe Russian, I don't know--"

She traced circles on the top of the kitty's head. "Kitties never deserve to be eaten. Everyone needs to be safe and sound, right, kitty?"
