She had informed Dagmar and Aracelia very politely that the lights in the west stairway, the ones between the second and third floor, were dying. It was late now, after leaving her History teacher alone to do her homework; instead of the easy trip downstairs she'd anticipated, she found herself staring down the challenge of the eerily flickering lights - the stairs flashing into her vision, then fading back into darkness. The wall-mounted lights shone dimly, every shadow cast in eerie orange.

Now, normally Elke would have resigned herself to temporary over-shoulder glancing and hurried down the stairs. One flight, a landing, another flight, through the door and to her own room. Not much could happen in that short span. Only there had been a monster on school grounds just yesterday. She hadn't seen it, but she'd heard it, she knew it was there, it could still be outside. It probably was still outside.

Or it could be inside.

But it wasn't, she assured herself, it would have left a trail of blood, guts, and gore! And from what she could see, there were no guts or gore or even a little sprinkling of blood in the stairway. (This was good. Elke tended to faint or throw up when faced with blood.)

Still, even with all these good thoughts, she couldn't. Quite. Make herself take that first step into the dimly lit stairway. She stood there, toes just barely inside the doorframe, staring into possibly monster-filled oblivion.

Frankie was coming up the stairs, as she did every day, scooting up on her a**, sideways, eyes darting up and down the stairwell. To Frankie, this made the most sense-- something ALWAYS snuck up on you in horror movies, especially in stairwells, and she was doing her best to see them first. She did not want to embarrass herself by screaming by being startled, so she kept her wide eyes on the prize.

So far, nothing, which really put a damper on Frankie's energetic approach to all things terrifying. When half the school considers you crazy and the other half simply bemusing (with a dash of horrifying), and those kids are all experiencing crazy junk... Frankie somewhat felt like she was missing out. It wasn't fair! She knew everything there was to know about vampires, from the Cullen brand to the historical brand, and she did her best to make her room enticing-- including making a coffin in woodshop which terrified her teacher as she measured her own frame.

Yes, Frankie had made her own coffin, and she actually stores it under her bed, as she had been ordered to get rid of the damn thing, as it was freaking out some of the students. She got an A on it though, she had worked ever so hard. It was lined with several twilight duvets, and she kept a silver knife in there. Just in case.

"Good evening... Elkeyyyyyyy" Frankie said in her most oft putting sing song voice. She totally knew Elke. Totally, "Have you seen anything odd yet? I'm still waitinggg why is everyone so luckyyy sob sob."

The sudden appearance of Frankie and her odd fashion of traveling upstairs surprised a squeak out of Elke, but she'd seen the other girl come up the stairs like this enough that she recognized it halfway through the escalation to a scream. She smiled weakly at the pink-haired girl, then almost told her of the monsterkitten and the student hanging outside Giselle's window.

Of course, when she had told Giselle of the first monster, the second had appeared, so she thought the better of it. Instead, with the patented 'Elke is lying' look that everyone seemed to recognize if they'd been at Barren Pines for more than a week, she said, "Um... no?"

"Hi, Frankie," said Elke after a moment.

Frankie looked REALLY put out by this, her expression darkening, her eyes growing wider as if she was about to devour Elke with them.

"Annoyed, I am," Frankie suddenly said, "SO annoyed. Its terrible, the others shouldn't get to have such fun and exciting things happen to them. So far I haven't heard anything about Vampires but its only going to be a matter of time before they arrive and YOU KNOW WHAT ELKE???"

Elke probably had a good idea if she knew toddlers and their desire to have temper tantrums. Frankie had all the signs, balled fists, scrunched up face, feet slamming in to the stairs in an angry fashion.

"I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE. COME AND GET US, YOU ********. ELKE AND I ARE WAITING AND WE WANT TO SEE YOU SO SO SO MUCH."

Poor Elke; Frankie's arm slithered around the poleaxed Elke's waist, as if they were comrades, or sister suffragettes.

Worse, for poor Elke, is the fact that someone, no, something had also been listening in to Frankie's demands and had decided to answer her heated calling.

The first thing the two girls heard was a slow scuffle, as if something was dragging itself up the stairs from the two floors below. It was slow, but it remained steady, the echo of the sound making its way up to the third floor where the girls were.

Soon enough, the owner of the scuffle appeared, a forlorn looking woman (at least, from what either student could tell) latching on to the handrail as her feet drug themselves up the stairs, one step at a time. As she turned the corner on the stairs, approaching their level, they could finally view her front. Or at least, the parts that weren't covered by the strands of long dark hair. Her face was entirely covered by the tangled hair, but Elke and Frankie could both tell from the way she carried herself that something was terribly, horribly wrong with the woman.

A hiss came out from beneath the hair, distorted words that made no sense. Was her leg broken? Why was her arm being held at a funny angle? Was that... was that a voice trying to talk to them? What was she trying to say?

As any sensible person would, Elke sidled back a little bit at the scary man-eating look. "Frankie," she objected, her voice very small, "That's probably a bad idea, they might hear you-" Which probably was Frankie's idea, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the girl was crazy. That was a new happening in Elkevision, but new things were being discovered every day! Lunar landings! Etc!

Far from looking like a willing comrade or suffragette, Elke looked like she would please like to faint now - her green eyes looked as wide as Frankie's, but with terror, not anticipation or creepertude. Her worst fears shortly came into being, because she could hear something coming up the stairs. "Mon dieu," whimpered Elke; she brought her hands up to cover her eyes. Whatever it was, it was probably trailing blood everywhere. She did not want to puke on Frankie. Frankie would probably think that it was cool.

But what if it was a student again and not a monster at all? She opened her eyes at the hiss. Oh no, it wasn't a student. This was definitely a monster. Couldn't be anything but.

"Frankie, please, let's go," said Elke, who only wanted to slam the door in the monster's face.
