It's important to differentiate between sex and gender, especially in regard to trans individuals, and I would agree that gender is determined by how they feel and identify themselves, whereas sex is determined by what they've got going on "down there."

It definitely has to do with self-identification. I have a friend that Im not exactly sure how to classify him. He's intersex. Born with both, mom chose female, he didnt believe she made the right choice. He identifies as a male and changed his name and all that. But I dunno if he's transitioning, so I wouldnt know what to call him. Gender isnt black and white, it's shades of gray.

It's a matter of gender vs. sex.
Say a male indetified with the female gender more and acted as such, his sex is male, his gender is female.
Gender is what you identify with, sex is what you biologically are.
Since you were asking what gender, it depends on what the transexual in question feels they are.

Well, in the gay community the spoken word is "you are what you say you are, and anyone who disagrees can get eaten by wild cougars" Trans belong in the gay community so the definition applies.

I've heard some people say it's "A man in a woman's body and it's a wonman in a man's body". To put it simplly my explenation is: it a a person who believes there were born in a body with the wrong gender. But it's who/what you think you are, and I've always know that it only really matters if you know who/what you are.

Taeryyn If you are a male-to-female transsexual, then you are female. If you are a female-to-male transsexual, then you are male. Or you may identify as both or neither. Yes. ^ ^.

iMito Something that hasn't been brought up is that, while sex is pretty binary, gender is not. The binary idea of gender is a Western (and several other cultures) creation. Whereas, gender in fact is a spectrum. And it's my belief that it's a personal journey to discover where you are on that spectrum. Even sex isn't binary. There are people who are biologically intersex. Middlesex is a really good novel about one such individual.

And technically, no one is born with a "gender." They are born with a sex, but not a gender.
Sex is biological (like what's in your pants, or your chromosomes), gender is sociological (the various things we associate with being "boyish"/"masculine" or "girlish"/"feminine" - like blue vs. pink, playing with trucks vs. playing with dolls, etc.)
My apologies if someone pointed this out already!

le chevalier etoile I just feel the need to stress, on behalf of my community. . . Taeryyn If you are a male-to-female transsexual, then you are female. If you are a female-to-male transsexual, then you are male. Or you may identify as both or neither. Winner. Very much so.
