moving out

The day had finally come.

Kinsey Finch was moving out. She had recently turned- Uh. She had recently turned… Well, the actual age wasn’t important. With so many kids to keep track of, birthdays were kind of something that got lost to the wind after you turned eighteen. Oh sure, maybe you got a cake, or something. But birthdays were for the kids, so Kinsey had learned to just stop counting. Who really cared once she was ‘legal’, or whatever, anyways? It was really only the day that mattered.

We digress.

Kinsey Finch was moving out. It was a Saturday, a glorious, glorious Saturday. The sun was bright, the sky was crystal clear, it was just perfect. Under normal circumstances, Kinsey would have taken the opportunity to sleep in, however, the youth really…hadn’t packed herself before moving day. So she woke up sometime before dawn, and started to stuff clothes into those cardboard boxes. Then came the books, the window decorations, the bed stuff and stuffed animals. (Which she still won’t admit to having, by the way.) The last to go was her laptop, lovingly cradled by two stuffed-animals that didn’t exist.

Finally.

“Mom! All my stuff is ready!”

“‘bout time,” Zuzen snickered, poking his head out of the neighboring room.

“Shut up,” Kinsey grumbled, casually flicking her brother the finger as she walked by and slide down the stair banister. The youth made a wild jump, nearly hurtling into the front door. She heard her mother chuckle in the kitchen, and meandered her way in. “Hey mom. Hoyt.” She ruffled the youngest male’s hair as she strolled by, learning against the wall next to the counter.

The small boy giggled and waved before returning to his cookie decorating. Dalal looked up, regarding her daughter with a gentle smile. “All set? You need anything washed before you go?” She reached over, gently pulling Hoyt’s hand out of the batter. “You can eat them later, Hoyt.”

Kinsey chuckled. “Nope.” She had actually washed most her clothes on Thursday. And her bed sheets. “I’m taking a set of linens, by the way,” she added. “And, uh, most the stuff in my room.”

“You’re going to need more furniture, you know,” Dalal pointed out.

The youth shrugged with a sideways glance. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll get that. Eventually.” She’d find something at some yard sales. Or something. “I want to get the rooms painted before I try to move anything in,” she added. You know. Make it sound like she actually had a plan.

“Ah ha.” Dalal nodded sagely. “What about school, dear?”

“…” A long silence. “I’ll look into it.” Kinsey failed to mention she had been looking into it. For a while, actually. She still hadn’t found anything she really wanted to major in. And besides, she didn’t really have the funds to go back to college…not that she’d ever admit that. Her mother wanted her to be financially independent before moving out. Kinsey was jumping the gun. Big deal.

“That’s everything?” Dalal asked, shaking her daughter out of her rebellious little train of thought.

“That’s everything.”

“Have fun, Kinsey.”

Kinsey smiled, walking over to give her mother a hug. “I’ll call you later. Once I get everything moved.” She gave Hoyt another ruffle as she walked past and headed back upstairs, surveying the small pile of boxes in the center of the barren room.

…now. About moving all this stuff.

Kyoupiruchi
Wiping off the dust on his metal chest, Kyou popped open the lock to reveal the numerous vials of fel essence residing within. Some making soft gurgling noises, some shimmer brightly in the complete darkness of the chest, and some just sitting idly at the bottom of their vials. Kyou had already given at least a quarter of these corrupted essence out now. There are some extra space for Kyou to sift through to find the essences he needed.

Fact is, 4 volunteers had sent in their responses to Kyou's most recent advertisement. Their paper forms sit on the surface of the table next to Kyou right now. Based on their information, Kyou is to choose an appropriate fel essence for each of them.

From one of the top row he took out a vial with something shimmering brightly in it. But a vortex of darkness surrounded the light. Carefully he placed it on top of the paper application labeled for "Alistair Greenwitch". Then he took out a larger jar with a tree branch sitting in it. Upon first inspection it looked like it's bare and dead. But actually it's just the winter season for the branch now, when Autumn arrives it'll start to bloom Spring flowers. Such a peculiar tree branch that goes against the current season. Holding it carefully with both his hands, Kyou placed it next to the paper application that came from a girl named "Kinsey Finch". Digging through the bottom of the box for a few seconds, he finally pulled out a vial with a piece of shining, smooth silver in it. The nugget clang lightly to the glass as he held it up to inspect in the light. It looks and sounds like silver alright. But to his surprise when he found it in a cavern it wasn't oxidized by the nature at all. Not only that, it's as if the piece of silver is like rubber. It has no reaction at all towards a magnet and cannot conduct electricity or heat at all. Kyou almost dropped the vial when his foot accidentally kicked the corner of the metal chest, causing the glass vials inside to knock against each other lightly, which would almost sound like a beautiful chime if Kyou didn't panicked for a few seconds there. Good thing he didn't broke anything with his clumsiness. Holding the vial of Unoxidized Silver with extra care, he placed it on top of the paper application labeled for "Emile".

Last but not least, for the final person, who he couldn't read the name because Kyou accidentally spilled coffee over it. It seemed like the person didn't use water proof ink pens to fill out his form. But thankfully the rest of the paper was saved, except for the name. From beside the fel essence that was gurgling softly, he fished out a vial with a couple of coffee beans in it. Kyou's face darkened a little as he remembered his incident with these beans. It's perfect, spilled coffee and coffee beans, they match together well. This is the perfect fel essence for this... "Mr Blurred Name Caused By Spilled Coffee". Yeah.

Pulling out the briefcases that he collected back from some previous owners, he began to pack the fel essences and soul bottles that he randomly picked out from his stash. The soul bottle stock is getting low, he must pay a visit to Jeremy to order some more soon. Labeling the briefcases appropriately, he prepared the items to be mail out tomorrow to their new owners.

like christmas in july

“Nnn? A package already?”

Kinsey plucked the note off her mailbox and flipped the sticky over. ‘Package 4 Kinsey Finch @ Office’. That’s all. Useful. Kinsey sighed. The couldn’t even use proper English? Jeez, it was a tiny piece of paper. They could at least try. The young woman crumpled the bright yellow note and tossed it at the trash bin haphazardly, tucking her collection of envelopes, bills, no doubt, under her arm as she trudged to the office. She poked her head in and looked around.

“Hello?”

What a hassle. Couldn’t they just build bigger mail boxes, or something? She couldn’t be the only person getting a package these- Man. That was big. Kinsey eyed the case, it too had a yellow sticky labeled ‘Kinsey Finch’. “Hello?” she called again, setting her mail down to investigate her package. The youth looked up and brushed her bangs out of her face as she looked around. Of course. There was no one here. Well. That meant no one was here to see this!

Kinsey leaned over the desk, nearly tipping over as she snatched a pink set of sticky notes off the plush chair. She grabbed the nearest pen, and after a moment of scribbling, scrawled ‘thanks for the package, Kinsey’. She blinked, blue eyes studying the pad before shrugging and tossing it somewhere on the desk. It wasn’t entirely legible, and it probably just got buried in this lady’s piles of work crap, but if they didn’t care enough to leave her box all by its lonesome, they probably wouldn’t care too much when it was gone.

They’d find the note eventually.

Gathering up her mail and collecting her new case, Kinsey slowly made the journey up to her apartment, cursing the day she thought she’d like the room up top because it ‘had a nice view’. Nice view, bah! It wasn’t worth this kind of hassle! Walking up stairs. There wasn’t even an elevator she could use to hitch a ride. (Seriously, what was she thinking? All the problems moving in should have been hint enough!) And if that wasn’t enough, once she actually climbed up all the stairs, she had to march down the hall, find her door, and fumble around her pockets for keys. Eh? No, loose change. Back pocket? No. What was that- A lollipop? She really needed to do laundry… What about the other front- Wrapper. And money? Not entirely bad, but it wouldn’t buy her into her own house. Certainly she hadn’t locked herself out of her place again!

Oh, yes! Sweatshirt! Kinsey twisted sideways, trying to adjust her load into one arm without flinging papers everywhere and stuff her hand into the hoodie’s pocket simultaneously. Somehow, she managed, triumphantly retrieving keys, complete with cartoon characters. (There were probably more key chains than actual keys. It’s not like she owned a car, or something.) Kinsey quickly unlocked the door and stuffed herself inside, pushing all her mail onto the counter before it could scatter across the floor. She kicked the door shut, pulled off her boots, and began to sort. Bill, bill, junk, bill, letter from- oh, what, junk. Junk. Bill. Junk-

Hey? Who was this suitcase from, anyways?

Before thinking better of it, Kinsey popped open the case and pulled out the first thing that caught her eye. An empty bottle. How…special. And that’s when she spotted the jar, completely with an autumn branch. Interesting, but kind of strange, the girl though, since it was mid-summer and leaves definitely do not stay on trees that long. Especially when the branch had been removed from the tree. Kinsey turned the jar over once before carefully settling it in the corner, where she couldn’t possibly knock it over. She peered back into the case, pulling out a piece of paper. A letter. How dreadfully-

“HEY.”

Kinsey stared at the branch, suddenly in full blossom. That was Not. Normal. Branches don’t just bloom. Especially dead ones. The girl worried the paper, practically glaring holes at the strange branch. “I know what you’re up to,” she hissed, glancing away for only a moment before locking on again. Ah, nope. She wasn’t crazy, though. That branch definitely had dying leaves on it when she pulled it out, not green buds…

“Well. I’ve got my eye on you…” she muttered, finally looking down at the crinkled letter.

The youth attempted to read as fast as possible, still a little perplexed by the branch. Oh, hey, wait! This was from that Dr. Kyou fellow and his Lab. While she had never met him, or anyone who worked there, Kinsey had sent in an application the last time she had seen ads posted around town. She was volunteering to catch a soul for that…thing, apparently. But, how exciting! Kinsey had never pictured she’d be chosen!

Suddenly much more interested than just a few moments before, the young woman leaned against the fridge and started over, slowly reading from the top. Something about a strange branch that didn’t follow the seasons? Ah ha! She knew she saw that branch switch! She knew it! But, that wasn’t all. The letter also described Raevan construction briefly. Which was why Miss Kinsey would be catching a soul, after all.

“Hmmm,” she mused, turning to stick her crumpled letter to the small fridge with a magnet before facing the Seasonal Branch again. “What am I going to do with you?”

…what kind of soul would match a branch?

Uh. Make that a crazy branch.

i'll show you attitude

Kinsey strolled into her kitchen sometime mid-morning, foot catching on a stray boot as she tried to maneuver around the pile of junk growing in her hallway. Damnit. She’d have to clean that up later, she noted, hopping on one foot until the laces gave up and let her free. She immediately made for the kitchen, pulling out the floppy cardboard box housing the English Muffins. After prying one apart, she popped it into the toaster over (a gift from her mother, like she could ever afford something like that) and moved to get the butter out of the fridge, greeting her spasmodic branch on the way by.

“Morning.”

The leaves began to fall away in response.

Kinsey glowered and rolled her eyes, leaning over to pull a knife out of the dish rack. “Nice,” she muttered, shaking her branch. “You know, you sure have a lot of attitude for something that shouldn’t even exist,” she commented, snorting as the last leaf broke away from the twig. The toaster ‘pinged’, politely informing the youth her breakfast choice had been nicely browned, and should be removed before the excess heat crisped her bread beyond the acceptable browness.

The young woman sniffed once, giving her Fel Essence a dirty look, and attended to her breakfast.

“I suppose I should probably find you a soul,” she said through a mouthful of muffin and jam. Augh. Now there was blackberry jam on her shirt. Awesome. Kinsey shoved the rest of the bread in her mouth, nearly choking as she tried to chew and run cold water over the spot simultaneously. And now her shirt was wet. “Freakin’ fantastic,” she muttered, whipping the shirt off and tossing it in the ever-growing pile as she stormed down the hall back to her room.

A few moments later, she returned in a fresh outfit, and made for the second half of her meal. She gave the branch, which now seemed to be quite happy and blossoming, a dirty look. “Don’t tell anyone you saw that,” she rumbled, stuffing the rest of her breakfast in her face.

“Now. About that soul,” she muttered, scratching her chin idly. “I suppose maybe I should do some research. Match you well.” She reached over the counter and plucked the branch from the corner. It had already shifted back to the ‘fall’ state; the leaves were a wonderful array of firey reds, sunset oranges and pale yellows. It really was very beautiful, even if it wasn’t supposed to exist. Kinsey sighed and set the branch back in his corner gently, wondering if he wouldn’t like somewhere with more light. Well. He wasn’t alive, so it probably didn’t matter.

Except, he was alive…

Augh! How confusing.

Kinsey rubbed her face and pushed violet bangs out of her face. “What do you want, huh?” she questioned, well aware the Fel Essence wasn’t going to reply. How was she supposed to match something that had four modes of being anyways? Well, pick its most frequent state, the voice of reason answered. Kinsey snorted. “So, something that has to do with fall, huh? Well, what’s the first thing I think of with fall?”

“Sweaters.” s**t. Sweaters didn’t have a soul. “Leaves.” Strike two. The damn essence was a tree branch, she should probably deviate from that just a little. The Raevan needed some kind of diversity in its structure, right? (And while she might have absolutely no idea all together, it felt very sound, in theory.) “Well. Pumpkins.” She’d always take the younger kids out to pick pumpkins when the leaves started changing. “Hmm. There’s an idea.” She tapped her chin with her finger. She’d have to look into that.

What kind of effects would a vegetable have on a soul, anyways?

because i need it, see

So, I need to stop working at impossible hours or something. I definitely overslept for that lunch with my mother for the sixth time, or something. I lost count. (I'm sure she hasn't.) So I had to run out as fast as I could, I nearly fell down the stairs (why did I think that was faster than an elevator?). Anyways. I had to stop for coffee on the way to my mother's and ran into, quite literally, a lady named Alex and her pet gwee, Lorenzo. She bought my coffee. Nice of her, huh? Seriously, I almost bit her head off and she buys me coffee. (Not a morning person. Seriously. I don't care what time it actually is when I wake up, I'm not a 'morning' person.)

She's alright, in my book. I owe her a coffee, though. I don't like owing people stuff.

there's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot. ~Steven Wright

Alex has a really attractive brother. Just saying.

And how do I know, praytell? Why, I went to take my friend fishing! You know, as a little thank you. Some bonding. Given, I think female bonding is supposed to be shopping, and fishing is a 'father-son' thing, but all the same. I have no money. Shopping wouldn't go well.

BUT GUESS WHAT WE FISHED UP.

A leviathan, of all things. And he was angry, and dying. So, ah, me, being myself, I happened to bring my soul bottle along from the Lab 305 project. ( YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN SOMETHING GOOD WILL COME ALONG. ) And I know I'd been trying to match the Fel Essence with a soul, but honestly, it's a lot harder than I thought.

....why am I even trying to justify myself to a piece of paper?

I caught the leviathan's soul, and it's super awesome. I just feel bad for the poor guy who's got to deal with it.

...I hope the Raevan isn't angry when it's born, haha. All and all, a successful fishing trip, I'd say.

a fish for me, a fish for you

After we caught the crazy giant snake, I had to give the soul and the fel essence to Alex, so she could bring it back to the Lab for Dr. Kyou. I hope everything goes alright. But there was a lot of paperwork involved. Oh, giant sea beast. I hope you don't cause liabilities.

Oh!

Alex managed to get some scales from him! I gave one to her, and one to Dr. Kyou ( I hope he got it ), and I'm keeping one. I think I might like to give it to the Raevan. I guess we'll see, whenever it's born. I might like to keep it for myself.

Like I said. It was a very good fishing trip.

suds and luck

I tried to clean my apartment.

...yeah. I know.

It was terrible. It was one of those things. I didn't even realize there were so many steps involved. I didn't realize there were so many cleaners involved! I had to call my mom so many times, I'm surprised she didn't just unplug her phone. When I get a new job, and when I have some spare cash lying around, I'm totally hiring Agni to clean my place.

Oh, right! I met Agni at the supermarket when I went to pick up cleaning stuff. I also met this lovely Raevan; her name was Lucretia. She was absolutely beautiful. She said her father was teaching her magic; she wanted to know about my luck. I wish I could have told her more. ( I didn't really realize Raevans could do magic, but I guess, in retrospect, it kind of makes sense. ) I do hope to see them both again, it was a nice supermarket run-in.

I guess should get back to cleaning now.

...yay.

chin up!

“….hello?” Kinsey blinked and hung her coat. The diner was still dark? She frowned and switched on a light, searching for any signs of life as she headed towards the kitchen. Was she too early? No, her watch said it was four in the afternoon. The diner was due to open in an hour, why wasn’t anyone getting ready for the day? There was food to be prepped and tables to be set and AUGH. Did she really have to do everything herself, honestly?

Brow furrowing, Kinsey started for the menus when the other waiter came bursting through the door, blond hair standing up in a proud crest. “Sorry I’m late,” the youth panted, shaking out of his coat like a wet dog. “The chef didn’t notice, did she? What do you want me to do,” he continued to babble, taking the stack of dingy menus from Kinsey before she had the chance to answer.

The waitress chuckled and resisted that maternal urge to flatten her co-worker’s bed head. “I just got here too. You should try being here early,” she joked. “Pull your own weight, or something.” She snickered to herself and headed for the cubbies out back.

“Did the boss notice?”

“N’aw. Place was silent as a graveyard.” Kinsey shrugged and stared blankly at her empty cubby. She could have sworn she left one of her uniforms here last night. Only one needed a good cleaning. “Did you touch my stuff?” Immediate reaction, a habit caused by having too many little brothers. Boys were thieves, end of story. ( They stole hearts, diaries and virginities. What other proof did she need? )

“Nope.”

“What the hell, your uniform isn’t here either.” The young woman scowled, hands on her hips. If it was their new busboy playing some kind of practical joke, she was going to stick her boot so far up his a**, he was going to be puking leather. No one touched her stuff. “You keep setting the tables,” she hollered, “I’m going to go find our stuff.” Kinsey stormed down the stairs located in the very back corner and pounded on the office door.

“Boss! You better not be hiding that punk! Me n’ Roth need our uniforms!”

The chef, previously referred to as ‘boss’, opened the door with a snort. “I told the kid not to come in today, Kinsey, I-”

“What!?” Kinsey spluttered, hands flying into the air. “We need a dishwasher! I can’t service all by myself! It’s Friday, and we’re always packed, and-”

“Kinsey, calm down. I sold the place.”

“….YOU WHAT!?

“I sold my restaurant.”

Kinsey stared.

“Shut your mouth, girl, that’s very unattractive,” the older woman smiled.

Kinsey snapped her jaw shut and glowered. “I didn’t know it was for sale,” she muttered, rubbing her chin. You’d think she’d notice something like a little red ‘For Sale’ sign in the corner of the window.

“It wasn’t. A gentleman made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. One million dollars! One million dollars for this place! I can retire, Kinsey!”

Kinsey’s scowl melted off and she gave the chef a wide-eyed look. “That’s awesome, but, um, how does he plan to make all his money back?

“This place is gonna be a fancy little fashion boutique.” The cook looked tickled pink.

“….no, seriously.” Kinsey frowned, shuffling as she folded her arms over his chest.

“I’m right serious.”

“…..then I’m…?”

“…out of a job. I’m real sorry, Kinsey, I-”

Kinsey didn’t hear anything past ‘out of a job’. She was jobless. She had only been living on her own for a few months and she was already in big trouble. Her last pay check would come two weeks from now. How on earth was she supposed to make rent? She slammed the door at the top of the stairs, ignoring whatever the cook was yelling at her back. Taking advice from a traitor? As if.

It only took Kinsey a moment to find the blond in the dining room and only a moment more the explain their suddenly dire straights. Roth was a college student; financial aid would toss him a bone if he couldn’t find a new job. Kinsey had no such fortune. She couldn’t go back to her mother with her tail between her legs, not yet! The waitress…or, ex-waitress, was only half-present as she bad Roth farewell, more concerned with the terrible fear seeping up from the darkest places in her mind.

Kinsey hurried herself home, stopping at the corner store to stock up on little orange packets of ramen and a few boxes of cereal. She was going to have to eat cheap. It didn’t get much cheaper than ramen. Kinsey worried her lip and gazed up at the dusky sky as she plodded down the dingy sidewalk, the sunset a dirty grey. She could survive on noodles and cereal. Her mom still invited her over for family dinners, she could probably get the leftovers if she asked nicely. She could turn off her hot water. She didn’t need her TV, but she should probably keep the internet. Gotta look for new jobs, as it were. She’d need her phone. She could do laundry at home, though, and she could probably keep the apartment a couple degrees colder.

Pushing into her apartment building, Kinsey felt a little lighter. Her plan was entirely doable, as long as she found a job as soon as possible. The youth chuckled to herself and started up the stairs. With her charm and razor-sharp wit, how hard could it be?

Sleeping on your feet is super dangerous.

I totally crashed into this huuuuuge guy and spilled my hot chocolate all over him. He was totally sweet about it, though. I felt really bad, the poor guy works a graveyard shift like I do. Like I did.

ANYWAYS. His name was Phiel and he was a bodyguard. And boy, was I lucky I decided to clean up my place! For some reason or another, I decided to invite him back to my crappy little apartment. Well, okay, I know the reason. He looked like he was about to crash and burn, and I still felt guilty for making a mess of him. ( And, perhaps, I might have found him a little attractive. A little. )

Bwuh.

I hate job hunting.

Having exhausted all my options as a waitress, I had to start applying anywhere and everywhere that's hiring. You know, for needing people desperately, people sure are picky. Whatever. But speaking of, I did meet another Raevan, Xiu, and a charming gent named Ethan while I was applying for a job at a toy store in the city.

Ethan was a pleasant, if a bit stiff. He was getting a present for his co-worker's daughter. I think. I don't exactly remember. Xiu was a very sweet Raevan, he didn't laugh when I got myself caught in the kiddie table, not even when he needed to be de-tangled. I suspect he was a younger Raevan, though. He seemed to...well, maybe he didn't recognize as many words as Lucretia did. He was very polite though. I didn't meet his guardian, though.

Oh well.

I should really get back to the search.

“Miss Finch?”

Kinsey lifted her head of her hand and sat upright.

“The chief is out of his meeting now. He can see you.”

Kinsey blinked at the officer’s knees, taking a moment to register what the gruff voice just tried to tell her. Oh. Right. She pushed back against the wall, ruffling her hair as she struggled to her feet. Kinsey followed after the brown-eyed officer and ruffled her hair some more as she stifled a yawn. She didn’t even remember sitting down, never mind falling asleep. Soundly. Damn. She hardly caught the order to wait outside the office, scowling a little as the door closed in her face.

“Are you sure about her, sir? She was sound asleep in the lobby.”

Kinsey sniffed and frowned. So the door wasn’t all the way shut, hmm. But who was that guy to try and rob her of her job before her first day even began!?

“I was in that meeting for five hours, McIntire.”

Five hours!? Kinsey choked a little and checked her watch. Well. So much for dinner with her family. She’d have to beg her mother for forgiveness later.

“But she’s a woman.”

WAIT. WHAT?

A grunt. “She’s also the best candidate we have right now. We don’t have enough officers to spare a pair raising the puppies. Black gets the b***h since he can’t serve ‘til his wounds heal anyhow. So this one gets the male.”

“Why don’t we train more officers?”

“Do you really think we aren’t working on that?” the chief snapped.

They argued further, but Kinsey’s luck must have finally shifted because the chief stood firm and held his point, despite the disgruntled officer’s best efforts otherwise. He was probably just jealous, anyways. Who didn’t want a dog? Said disgruntled officer opened the door and let her in. Kinsey and brown-eyed beast exchanged fierce looks, insults and challenges flying through the thick silence. Day one, and the rivalry was born.

“Miss Finch. Have a seat.” The large man nodded to the rickety chair in front of his desk. Once Kinsey sat, he continued. “You attended the lectures with Black last week, I presume.”

“Yes, sir.” Five hours every night, and she hadn’t been paid for a single one. Having a good resume (okay, kind of) wasn’t enough, as it were, Kinsey had to demonstrate her ability to work with large dogs. Once that was sufficiently showcased, there were instructors from other districts to teach the new handlers techniques, skills ad specific jobs their dogs were going to be expected to perform. Kinsey and Black were going to be paired with German Shepard Dogs. There were things to sign, more things to learn ( oh god, she had to take courses? ) and physical exams to take. Since she was eventually going to be a fully fledged police officer ( what was she getting herself into!? ) there were a lot of things she needed to master. “I signed all the documents.”

Winters nodded. “Good. You’ll be here four times a week to work your dog on the course. Once he gets older, we’ll start working you in the field. You’re expected to be training before then, of course.”

“Of course.”

“Since you live in an apartment, we’d prefer you bring him in at least six times a week, but taking him out for a run in the park now and then will do, if you can’t make it out here.”

“Right.” Kinsey nodded, looking a little dazed.

“Any questions?”

“Uhm. How often do I get paid?”

“Bi-weekly.” The chief chuckled. “The dog’s basic expenses are built in. Once he’s trained, he’s just as much of an officer as you will be, you know. Oh, your pay is pretty low until you’re actually serving. But something is better than nothing, I presume.”

Kinsey smiled. “Yeah, the training guy told us about the officer thing.” She paused. “So, can I bring him home? You guys already inspected my place and me and that other guy, Black, we went out and got all the stuff…”

Winters actually laughed, shaking his head. “I wouldn’t be wasting your time if the dog wasn’t ready.” He motioned to the door. “You got a name picked out?”

“Ford.”

Glancing back around at the newborn frei behind him, Eiry lightly gave a tug, pulling him faster into the room. "Wee one, time to meet your guardian! Your friend, hearthonest, forever to come. Isi is my friend, my guardian. He's very kind to me. Your guardian will be, too, friend with kind heart. Say hello." The minty frei fell back through the other raevan, drifting through him like a wind through the grass and as soon as he was on the other side of him, leaving him wide open to Kinsey, Eiry gave a gentle push with his hands. "Forward float and merry greeting of very first ever time meeting!"

"Good, Eiry," Isi hooted from the desk. He gave a light tap against the wood frame, beckoning his raevan near, "Let them have their space. Come over here."

Eiry nodded his head and obliged, floating to Isi's side. There was a big grin on his face, unlike the grin before.

Isi glanced at his raevan, knowing full well what THAT kind of smile entailed. The boy furrowed his heavy eyebrows at the minty frei and hissed at him, "Eiry, what did you do?"

Eiry simply grinned larger and made a motion with his head to the half page piece of paper he had taped to the new frei's back that said, "Hello! Take me home!" in Old English lettering.

Varun's Opinion: Words. Home, now?

Kinsey's Opinion: Varun! I've brought him home! Oh, I could gush on about him for ever, but that would be out of character. He's just perfect though, everything about him. I'd never have expect this, never what I imagined, not at all! Still, he's incredibly handsome and I'd not trade him, not for anything! I do hope I can meet the doctor someday, to thank him.
