Who: Zul, Kinsey & Alex
When: Late Afternoon
Where: Shopping Center
Weather: Really fsking cold.

The mall had yielded mixed results as far as gifts went, but for Zul, it had been a tremendous experience. Alex had watched her Raevan go from a smiling, inquisitive creature to being near energetic, a constant bastion of warmth and wit that had kept her on her toes. He'd been feeding wonderfully from the snow, gorging himself on the coldness and 'storing' his energy since it didn't snow year round; the fireplace didn't always procure the heat he needed, so the frigid temperatures were a treat for him.

It was during one of his more energetic bouts of questioning and inquiries that Alex decided it was time to go for a walk (or risk going insane from trying to keep up with his apparent ADD). Of course, it was icy enough for her spit to turn into ice before it left her mouth, so staying outside wasn't even a consideration. No, she'd have to take him somewhere he could bask in the snow while she did not have to - which brought forth the logical idea of a small shopping center. It was one of those quaint little places that had knick knack stores, food stalls, odd-ball clothing vendors and little cafes; it was the latter that the woman was counting on, and hopefully not alone.

The woman stood outside of The Mean Bean, one of the trendy type of shops that catered to every type of coffee and concotion there of imaginable, waiting for her friend Kinsey to join her. She'd even made sure she called in the late afternoon, remembering their first morning meeting and really not wanting to lose her head over an innocent gathering. Alex was dressed in her standard 'cold' outfit of a turtleneck beneath her three-quarter jacket, scarf twined around her neck and chin, nice jeans and boots. She'd even left her hair down to help retain some heat, which made her realize she really, really needed a haircut. More than that, she was wearing a bright smile despite her ruby nose, dancing green eyes watching her charge fondly.

Zul, for his part, was in Raevan heaven. He'd taken to chasing the birds off the ground so that they lighted in the trees, doing little more than flexing his wings and advancing to send the little feathered beasts to the sky. Once the dead branches were ladden with the unhappy things, he would rush the tree and send them in flight again! It was almost cruel, but he got exactly what he wanted: the branches would shake, the snow would sift, and the demonic Frei would bask beneath the snowfall. Dark-skinned face turned upwards, eyes closed, he would absorb the pure snow untouched by any living creature, feasting.

She thought he looked like a fallen angel, and as long as it was just snow that fell and not the remnants of scared bird, she wasn't going to stop him.

Kinsey really shouldn't be out Christmas shopping. She was quite sure of that. She hardly had enough money saved up to pay for her rent and her meager food bills while she was on the job hunt (though, she did find something fairly promising the other day). She couldn't afford Christmas presents. But how could she explain that to her little brother? He was still a kid. And her younger sisters. Zuzen might understand, he was old enough. ( He had Keaghan to buy him presents anyway. ) Oh, did that mean she'd have to buy something for Adaire too? Good gods above, maybe her mother would lend her some money.

The young woman groaned and rubbed the side of her face. She needed coffee. It pleased Kinsey immensely that Alex suggested they meet at a coffee shop (actually, it pleased Kinsey immensely that Alex invited her along at all). Tucking her mittened hands into her military-style jacked ( a Christmas gift from years past, she thought with dismay), she trundled down the street, careful to dodge shopping patrons who couldn't see over their festive packages.

"Alex!" she shouted, spotting her friend, equally well-bundled. She jumped up and waved, breaking into a brisk trot (and sliding over a patch of ice) before halting in front of Alex, careful not to crash into the woman this time. "Alex, it's nice to see you. Have you been-"

Kinsey stopped and eyed the Raevan; since when was Alex caring for a Raevan?

"...you did not mention him on the phone!"

Alex caught sight of her friend slipping on the sidewalk, uttering a short burst of laughter that plumed before her lips, extending her hands automatically to grasp Kinsey as the woman slid near by. "Kinsey, it is icy in case you failed to notice." She grinned over her scarf, good humored, eyes flicking to the side to follow the younger woman's gaze. The sight of Zul dimmed her grin into a fond smile, returning her gaze to Kinsey. "Oh hey, by the way, I take care of a Raevan now."

Another small bit of laughter escaped her, extending her hand towards the snow-bathing Frei. "I thought I'd surprise you, and besides, you looked excited enough without knowing. I'd hate to have seen what would have befallen you if you were eager to get here before that." Another teasing grin and Alex looked again to her charge. "Zul, snow angel, commere a sec please?"

The dark-skinned demon in question opened his sky-blue eyes, lighting upon his woman, who now stood next to another who was watching him. It was the latter he found interest in, floating towards the two females, his ribbon leaving a small indent against the snow in his wake. Zul lowered his head a little to look at Kinsey, bright gaze lingering over the rubies beneath her watchful eyes. "Pretty," he informed Kinsey, lifting a gloved hand to trace a finger under his own eye, mirroring where her rubies were.

The Italian quirked an amused smile. "Zul, this is Kinsey, although I doubt she'd mind being called pretty." Alex winked at the woman before returning the introduction, "Kins, this is Zul." Her voice lowered, leaning near her friend, words soft enough that they barely warmed the air in front of her, "He's young yet."

Zul looked to his woman as she talked, attention wavering between the two women but mostly upon Kinsey, smiling widely at her name. "Kinsee," he purred the inflection upon the last part of her name, putting his hand over his bare chest, "Zul." He may learn that Alex stating his name was enough of an introduction, but that time was not now, preferring to tell others his name from his own lips. Best to make sure there was no misunderstanding of which one of them had the good name.

He didn't mind the name 'Kinsey' so much, as it was easy to say and curled his tongue in a pleasing manner. It seemed to fit the ruby-adorned woman as well. As an after thought, the Raevan extended his hand, mindful to warm it before the new woman accepted it; his skin would have otherwise been quite cold to the touch after bathing in the snow, although he himself didn't feel cold. The Raevan was comfortable, but he did understand that humans were far more fragile creatures.

"I noticed," Kinsey murmured, failing to specify if she noticed the ice or Zul, eyes still fixed on the Raevan. "He's lovely," she commented, resisting the urge to reach over and touch him as he floated near. He was simply gorgeous; perhaps the finest looking Frei Kinsey had encountered thus far. (Albeit, she'd only met three others, but the Raevan was absolutely stunning.)

The young woman fell silent as the Frei watched her, finding herself catch her breath a little. Why was she so nervous? This was Alex and her charge. If she could befriend a little Gwee, surely she could make nice with Zul. The youth even blushed a little when he mentioned her rubies; they were very rarely called pretty. Strange, odd, out-of-place, but rarely pretty. "Why thank you," she managed, turning to Alex. "He's already got the charm part of the deal, huh?" she teased. After all, what woman didn't like being complimented on her jewelry.

The ex-waitress turned back to Zul and flashed him her best smile, the sudden case of the butterflies settled back down. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Zul," she replied, taking the offered hand for a shake. His hands were so warm, she noted to herself, but said nothing. "Has anyone ever told you that you have the prettiest eyes?" she asked, having never really seen such a shade of blue herself. Kinsey turned back to Alex and just grinned again. "He's absolutely amazing." There wasn't a better word for him.

"Thank you," Alex replied softly, watching her charge and friend. He'd been very receptive to humans thus far with very little question about his own difference; she was still learning his quirks and thought process, finding the easiest method of discerning as much when he interacted with others.

The Raevan smiled widely. "You're welcome," he replied cordially, putting his hand on his chest and bowing slightly at the compliment. It had always made Alex laugh when he did that, and it seemed to go over well with others (in some amusing fashion or another), and it felt adult to him.

Zul cocked his head to the side thoughtfully at the compliment, his smile simmering into something more contemplative and content. "No," he replied with a lilt to his voice that indicated his pleasure, "but you have now. Thank you." He offered another bow, chin lifted to continue smiling at Kinsey, finding the woman to be quite agreeable.

The Italian laughed as expected, rubbing the back of her neck at the Frei's antics. "Yeah he's...a natural ham, doesn't realize it though. He's got charm oozing out of him." She grinned at Kinsey, her tone of voice fond, "I got lucky. He's been a total sweetheart. He learns fast and likes to be polite...he says it gets favorable reactions out of people." Alex had been amused by the thought, but if that was his reason for having good manners, she wasn't going to nay-say.

"A pleasure to meet you, Kinsee," he agreed cordially after the shake, allowing his woman to lavish her praise. He didn't mind being interrupted for such things. Marbled wings spread for a moment, stretching comfortably before tucking against his back; he was full for the moment, and thus in an agreeable mood. "You will eat now, yes?"

"And you says he's young yet?" Kinsey laughed out loud, brushing her hair away from his face. "He has far more charm than most full-grown men!" She meant that in the nicest way possible, of course. Charming men were much more preferable than the scumbags that used to come to the diner she worked in just to hit on her. They were not subtle, nor ashamed, of what they wanted.

"Sounds absolutely wonderful, he does," she murmured softly, after listening to Alex's rundown of her charge. "What's his soul?" she asked curiously, wondering vaguely about the future of her own Raevan. Particularly if the state of its soul at the time of capture was going to effect him; the sea beast had been mighty unimpressed with the situation. All she needed was an eternally angry sea serpent on her hands. Speaking of, she really did need to get another job before he was given her charge.

"Well, we did decide to meet at a coffee shop, so I should hope there is some food in my imminent future," Kinsey chuckled, shuffling over the sidewalk carefully. She wasn't willing to take a slip (coffee in hand or not) and meet the powdery snow personally, thank you very much. If was far too cold for that. She waved Alex and Zul along, recalling the first time she had met the older woman. "Hey, how's your Gwee handling the new addition?" she chuckled, seeming to remember Zoe as quite the attention hog.

A bemused nod answered the first question, Alex's smile ticking higher at each compliment to her charge. She was fairly grateful that he didn't fully understand the gravity of women, especially being complimentary, or trouble would ensue. Truthfully, given what she knew of the history of that which composed the demonic Frei, she was anticipating...awkward moments when the time came for him to grow.

The woman glanced to Zul, ushering him towards the building; as he floated between them with a lazy smile to grasp the door, she leaned over to Kinsey, whispering her answer softly, "Baphomet." Righting herself, she gave the Raevan a wide smile as he opened the door for them, saying more loudly, "Thank you, you handsome little devil." A compliment and a statement of the obvious, such was her forte.

The Raevan himself heard nothing of the word, not even noticing it took place. Blue eyes danced merrily beneath the inverted pentagram on his brow, tanned face drawn warmly into a constant smile that he set upon Kinsey. "It smells good," he offered in regards to her comment about coffee. He'd never had it himself - there wasn't much of him to consume things outside of his cold and heat - but he was sure he'd try it. Someday.

At the mention of the Gwee, the Frei lit up further. "Zul Too," he purred fondly, touching the pulsing blue lines in his gorget. "My friend."

Alex hooked her thumb at Zul, grinning widely. "That answer it?" She laughed, shaking her black hair free of lingering snow flakes. "He's in love with the little guy. When I brought him home, I introduced him, I said, 'This is Lorenzo, I call him Zoe too,' but he misheard me. So 'Zoe too' became 'Zul too,' and I haven't had the heart to correct him." Another fond smile crept over her lips, reaching out to brush an errant lock of her charge's spiked hair.

He suffered the touch with good humor, eyes lidding beneath his pleasure at the talk of his little friend. "We chase," he said, as though it explained everything. "He's fast."

The young woman smiled and nodded to Zul as he held the door for them, racking her brain for 'baphomet'. She didn't recall ever learning anything about a creature under that name, nor did he look terribly familar; she was going to have to look it up. (She could just check a search engine while she was doing some online job-hunting.)

Kinsey couldn't help but laugh out loud when Zul and Alex explained Lorenzo's name change. "Zul too. Ahh, he must be honored, sharing a name with you," she told Zul, smiling to herself. She found it remarkable; she couldn't help but compliment the Frei. It was just something about the boy, like some draw she just couldn't resist. Kinsey couldn't help but wonder if that wouldn't lead to the Raevan being spoiled rotten; even Alex seemed fairly smitten with him. (Though, she had every right to be. He was under her care, after all.)

"Well, let's get in line," she suggested, motioning towards the line of people heading for the register. "On a day like today, they're bound to be really busy." The line itself might take a little while! She glanced at Zul. "You wanna wait in line with us?" Alex did say he was young, Kinsey couldn't help but wonder if he had the attention span of a youngster, too. Her younger brothers could never wait in line patiently. Of course, neither were this charming with women, either.

Bone wings flapped momentarily within the building, allowing him to float a little higher at the compliment. Yes, he did like this woman; if he could wrap himself in her compliments and feed, he'd no doubt be stuffed for a month. "Honored," he purred in his smokey voice, "yes." At Kinsey's next question, Zul tilted his head at her, gloved hands clasped together in front of his ribbon. "Line? Ah, line," brilliant blue eyes absorbed each person waiting their turn, nodding, "I will wait. With Kinsee." Marbled webbing folded in on itself as his wings tucked against his back, having already learned the hard way what stretching them in public could result in.

Alex groaned. "You have an admirer," she laughed lightly, unwrapping her scarf and slinging it over her arm. She'd take off her jacket soon too, but she was still thawing from the snow outside. "So, this is my treat, so get whatever you want Kinsey. I'm a bit hungry myself, those sandwiches look good..." Hungry green eyes turned over the display shelf still a fair distance away, namely the meat variety. The cold always made her hungry, like she was some type of bear that had to stuff herself stupid before hibernation. It was a damn good thing she had an active job to work it all off!

Turning back to the younger woman and her charge, she gave them both a wide smile. "How's the job hunting going, anyway? Any luck?" The Italian hoped that if the younger woman did find something, it would be a job easily done at home or with sporadic time off, if not only to spare her friend from the dregs of morning wakefulness.

The demonic Frei floated peacefully by the women, his attention shifting between them and the people around the two. They were all fascinating, but decidedly drab when covered to their very teeth. It was hard to see anything distinguishing. "With Kinsee," he politely informed the people behind them, smiling at their perplexed expressions. That was right; he was with the women, and the others ought to look so amazed for it.
PostPosted: Tue Feb 03, 2009 7:24 am

"Are you sure? I can cough up a couple bucks to pay for my own coffee." Probably not a sandwich or anything to eat (and dear gods above, did she want something to eat), but she didn't want to guilt her friend into feeding her. Of course, if she was serious, Kinsey would more than happily take her up on the gracious offer. She stepped forward as the line inched along, making a face at the mention of her job. Or rather, lack there of. "Nope. No job yet. I think I might have found something promising, though. I keep getting told I'm 'not quite what they're looking for', though, so no promises." She shook her head and sighed. Damn job market.

"This one's working with dogs, though," she rattled on, stepping forward again. "So I'm really hoping..." She trailed off and shrugged. No use getting her hopes too high, really. Kinsey shifted and glanced over her shoulder, making sure Zul was still floating alongside. "You doing okay, love?" she asked, only catching the tail end of what she assumed his conversation with the customers behind them. He was just too charming to leave him alone for long. Much more charming than any of her brothers. (Except maybe Hoyt. She did adore her youngest brother.)

"Psh! It's a couple of bucks for coffee, I think I can treat a friend." Alex smiled warmly to Kinsey, extending a hand to squeeze her shoulder in fondness. It was a step up from her usual antics, which likely would have involved hugging the poor woman and purring silly nonsense about how much she enjoyed the other's company. Maybe - just maybe - the Italian was learning to be more responsible.

She nodded her understanding, pursing her lips in annoyance. "I know what you mean. It's really obnoxious, how many people are hard up for help but aren't willing to take the time to build the skills." A slender brow arched in curiosity, a smile curling her lips at the mention of working with dogs. "No joke? That's fantastic!" Alex chuckled, glancing beyond Kinsey to her charge, who was behaving himself for the time being. "You'll have to tell me how that goes."

Long ears caught the endearment, a wide and pleased smile gracing his tanned visage. "With Kinsee," he agreed in a smokey purr, floating closer to the women as though to prove his point. Zul couldn't help but flutter his wings slightly, the rings tinkling against the bone frames as he preened under all the attention. "Lines are easy." The Raevan nodded solemnly at this proclaimation; it was one of the strange things humans did, something he observed and made sure to do better. No one could quite stand out in a straight line like a Raevan.

His lidded blue eyes slid beyond the woman next to him, adding a few watts to his smile, pointing towards the cashier while speaking to Kinsey. "Coffee," he informed them both, pleased. He had remembered the point of the visit, and since it was there turn, he'd make sure the wide-eyed girl at the counter knew about it.

Alex blinked and looked forward - sure enough, it was their turn. "Small," she ammended the baffled barista, "half-filled even. One of the chicken clubs, medium hot cocoa, and whatever my lovely friend here would like." She also smiled to Kinsey, sticking her hands into her pocket to curl her fingers around her wallet.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2009 12:27 pm

"Well, I guess it's okay," Kinsey mumbled, secretly more than happy to save a few bucks for tomorrow's lunch, herself. If this money drought continued, she might have to give up drug of choice, and that would be absolutely tragic. "And I'll definitely tell you! Man, if I finally get hired, I'll probably call everyone in my contacts to squeal in their ear!" she chuckled, shaking her head. Any job would be welcome at this point, but this was a job she really, really wanted.

She looked back to Zul, slightly surprised the Raevan had just ordered himself coffee. Was coffee even good for him? Kinsey suddenly found herself wondering about the metabolism of a Raevan, especially since he didn't have a stomach and his body was kind of small, all things considering. Well, she probably wouldn't have tried it, but Alex was a brave woman, and Zul was...Zul. If anyone could handle it, it was probably Zul. The youth nodded to herself before she realized the girl behind the register was waiting for her order.

"Oh, uh!" Kinsey shook her head, rattling herself out of dream world. "A medium french vanilla, light, with two sugars, please. And, um. A small chicken Caesar salad, that sounds nice," she rambled, nodding before she stepped to the side to let Alex pay. Once she got a job, Alex was definitely the first person she was taking out to lunch.

"Coffee is really strong, Zul, you sure you don't want cream or something in it?" she asked, hoping they could change his order before it was made if need be.

Alex smiled to Kinsey, shaking her head slightly to her friend. "Don't worry about him - he doesn't actually drink it." The woman paid for their order and deposited the change into the 'tip' jar by the register, accepting the sandwich and salad, handing the latter to the younger woman. "Let's get a seat."

The male Raevan turned his bright eyes back to Kinsey's own, smiling widely as his woman answered for him. Fingerless gloved digits ran over the top of his chest before trailing onto the ribbon, shaking his head. "Can't," he added with soft remorse. He couldn't consume anything, didn't know what anything tasted like; even the snow he'd had a while ago supplied limited flavor, as the ice seemed to evaporate before he could touch it. One day, though...one day, he'd taste, and Alex had already promised him a divine meal when that day came. Zul had no doubt he would experience these things, even if he didn't understand the purpose fully.

The Italian lead them to a quaint table near the fireplace but against a window, admitting them a choice view of the wintery picture outside. She put the food on the table, glancing up to Kinsey. "Is this okay? He...well, Zul...you'll see," she laughed apologetically. "He's going to eat a little too, even if he did spoil his appetite outside." She gave her charge a playfully scornful smile, tapping one of the rings against his boney wings.

Zul was pleased by this information, nodding his agreement at having already eaten. "I will have more," he assured his maternal Guardian, "is so nice." He floated to the seat closest to the window, but didn't sit, instead folding his arms over his chest and staring out the window; or at it, rather, startling some passerbys although he failed to notice or react.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:37 am

Kinsey looked baffled, taking her salad and her coffee as she followed after the pair. "I...oh. I see." Kinsey frowned and shook her head, taking a sip of coffee before she sat. Mhhhm. That hit the spot. But why was Zul ordering coffee? Alas. Perhaps it was one of those mysteries never meant to be solved.

Shaking herself out of her thoughts, Kinsey sat next to Alex, appreciating the warmth of the fire before she digging in to her salad. She hadn't even realized how hungry she was! Having finished a few mouthfuls, she glanced over to the Italian and beamed. "Thanks again, Alex. Good meals are really quite hard to come by, these days," she admitted, setting down her fork to take a sip of her coffee. How she did love her coffee.

She tipped her head sideways, watching Zul in silence. "...is he looking at himself in the window?" she asked Alex quietly, trying not the catch the Frei's attention. He did have every right, really, the Raevan was absolutely stunning. But still. It was a little funny, especially as he was a young one. Kinsey could only imagine what he was going to be like when he could really appreciate what dashing looks and natural charm could do for him.

"....a regular Casanova," she mumbled to herself, smiling and taking another sip of coffee.

Retrieving the coffees, Alex took her seat and smiled as Kinsey sat next to her. She made short work of unwrapping her food, taking a bite with a happy sigh; the two ate in companionable silence for a bit, alternating between the delicious deli food and her sweet hot cocoa. It was reasons like this that the woman loved Winter. There was nothing more fulfilling than staying warm on a cold day, spending time with the people she adored.

Green eyes flicked over to Kinsey as she spoke, swallowing her bite and giving her another warm smile. "My pleasure, it's nice to have company on cold days like this. Next time I'll have you over and make B cook again." The smile lifted into a knowing grin. She knew her brother wouldn't mind, but it was more interesting to watch the woman's reaction around her elder sibling.

Her attention wavered to her charge, giving a slight shake of her head. "Not quite. You know how when it's cold, you can breathe on a window and it'll fog up?" She put her sandwich down, now watching Zul. "He feeds off of cold and heat...not necessarily fire and ice, but the temperature, as far as I can tell. That's why I said the snow was a snack - doesn't do much for him, but this condensed natural coldness..." Alex trailed off, watching.

No sooner had she finished did Zul extend one gloved hand against the window, gloves pulsing with aquamarine hues. The small flakes of crystallized cold that had formed from the snow and chill weather seemed to melt, leaving a perfectly clear patch on the window that haloed his spread fingers. The Raevan withdrew his hand, crossing his arms again, even as the spot continued to grow over his portion of the window. While he had fed from heat, it had been the artificial warmth of a man-made fireplace; this, even on a man-made object, was unbelievable satisfying. To him, this was exactly what his Guardian loved about the weather - it felt like he was warming with each drain of the cold, his breath momentarily visable against his lips.

The Frei turned back to the women without pause, floating lower and 'sitting' as well as he could. It really was more like his ribbon trailed to the side while he reclined, but it worked. "Good," he purred in smokey tones, bone wings relaxing over the side of the chair. His eyes lidded in contentment, and had the Raevan been any older, his expression may not have been so innocent.

Alex smiled at Zul as he sat, nodding and glancing over to Kinsey. "We have about twenty minutes before it catches up with him and he'll be too energetic to keep inside. The heat from the coffee will keep him entertained for a little bit, if we're too slow." The woman laughed her amusement at the lazy smile on the Frei's face before continuing to eat, gaze merry on her friend and charge.

"Coffee," he agreed, remembering the cup with a slightly more alert gaze. He'd get to that in a moment; he didn't want to play when he was full, as if moving too much would expend the delicious cold that made him feel alive and lethargic at the same time.
